Very good for undergraduate microbiology class

I found this book to help me with studying for the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

The virus section was also very helpful for my college microbiology class.

For test preparation I used also "Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers" also on Amazon. (author Patrick Leonardi.) This study guide showed me the type of questions asked by college professors of microbiology. This helped a lot because now I knew what to expect.

However, a good knowledge source like "Instant Notes in Microbiology" provided a very good way to first learn the facts.

A minimalist classic

"Instant Notes in Microbiology" is a cheap and cheerful alternative to the proliferation of glossy microbiology textbooks which the North American market has spawned over the last decade. If cheap and cheerful puts you off, it shouldn't. The book is comprehensive, well written, well illustrated (in black and white), and importantly, reasonably priced. Unashamedly concentrating on a non-medical approach to microbiology (although medical microbiology is covered as well), the book lives up to it's title and presents a wide range of material concisely in an extended note format.
So what's the downside? I wonder if students can be weaned away from the Technicolor extravaganzas which compete for their attention, or if lecturers can be persuaded to adopt this minimalist volume as opposed to the competition? Also, while this is an excellent introduction to microbiology, to progress to a deeper understanding of specific topics, students will need to be persuaded to undertake extra reading and research. As we know, back to basics can have it's pitfalls, but put to the purpose for which it is intended, this is the most useful microbiology textbook it has been my pleasure to read for many years.....

Great "refresher" book

I have been traditionally schooled as a molecular biologist and had not dealt with microbiology since an intro course in college. When a new job landed me in a bacterial research lab, I panicked. This book has provided me with a great review of microbiology and prompted me to remember things I didn't know that I knew! The text is clearly stated and easy to understand. There are many cross references to other sections of the book which help to tie concepts together in a quick and concise manner. The diagrams are well drawn and very concise. I would recommend this book for those who have had some micro, but feel the need to brush up on the basic concepts.

Of the numerous medical texts I have, this one is unique. It is a quick and detailed resource that helps bridge Subjective and Objective data into a coherent Assessment and Plan. I look forward to the other books in this series.

This is one of the most user-friendly, comprehensive resources I've come across in many years and is quickly making its way towards the top of my "must have" recommendations list. The way that it is organized makes it easy to accurately diagnose. Because it addresses all relevant issues and conditions that may present, it ensures a proper work-up. A fantastic resource!

I think every review book I've read (read a lot, I'm paranoid and a slow learner) has some good points and some weaknesses, but this book and series are very good. It taught me to think about the material and explained it in a way that helped my overall understanding, which the boards are [supposed to be] after. I still had to guess on what seemed like a ton of questions and there's always a new twist they can throw in to make a hard question about a topic you thought you knew, but this series prepared me better than I needed to be - I went up 20 points compared to step 1 and think this book had the biggest role to play in my score improvement. What more can you ask for from a review source?

Loved it!

Great series of case-based review - I strongly recommend all the books in this series after using them before my Step 2 exam. Each volume is short and sweet to keep you from freaking out about all the stuff you don't know that you should...

Explanations are precise and written in easy-to-understand language, with difficult concepts and terms always explained or phrased in a way that makes sense. Lots of photos and x-rays that helped with the figures on the test.

All the right stuff!

If you like case-based reviews (which is how 70% of my exam questions were), this is a great series. Great cases with superb, to-the-point explanations that tell you the high-yield stuff and omit the fluff. Easy to read, lots of pictures and figures, jam packed full of pearls. Definitely check this one out.

I have used this book already as a back-drop for discussions with medical students. It is organized and easy to read. Good pearls.
Wardrop and Liles did a great job.

I'm looking forward to reading these case-based reviews of interesting adult and pediatrics cases. Liles is the program director of one of the best MedPeds residencies in the country and many of the residents and faculty at that program contributed to this book. I've seen a preview of it and it looks great.

Liles is an esteemed doctor and an outstanding teacher (named best teacher in the graduate school at UNC), so the book couldn't come from a better pedigree. The method is right, too. No stodgy textbook, here. Cases are the best source of learning for this book's target audience. A must have resource for the combined med/peds resident, or from either side of the program.

Great book. Finally, after purchasing many psychiatry books, I settled with this one. Almost all of the questions in the exam are same except for dementias and "Neuropsych tests for Dementias". That has to be covered by you elsewhere otherwise you are all set for the Psych part of ABPN Neurology,

Review Date: 2004-03-09
This book is a superb, concise, up-to-date review of basic physiology in the form of charts, tables, diagrams and illustrations. The book is exceptionally well-organized and focused, which permits ready access to the information. Although designed primarily for medical students, it is also valuable for physicians interested in concise and accurate review information. I found that it provided me with all the basic information that I needed to review for the Boards. This book should be in the library of every physician who is interested in keeping current. Highly recommended!

Although the text contains charts, tables, mnemonics, and fast facts, its strength is its charts. There are a huge number of them, and they are very detailed and well-organized. For example, renal physiology, which is always a challenge, contains some exeptional charts,(specifically, p.312, Summary of Renal Tubular Function). The book also includes relevant anatomy and clinical information - a definite bonus. As with most mnemonics, some are useful, while others are simply good for amusement.

After LOVING the Hamlet Literature Guide I bought a while ago, I decided to try Macbeth. Again, I was extremely pleased with the quality of the materials, but also with the fact that Secondary Solutions and author Kristen Bowers actually accomplish what they claim--I really CAN teach the content standards through literature! These guides are perfect for the high school english teacher, but would also be good for a parent who is homeschooling and has a fear of, or never really understood Shakespeare. PERFECT!

I recommend this literature guide to anyone who has any fear of teaching Shakespeare. I was one of those teachers, and like wild dogs, the kids could smell it!! I used this literature guide for the first time a month ago, and my teaching and confidence has turned a 180. This workbook had everything I needed- I didn't have to make up my own worksheets or lessons. Just copy and go--and the kids are learning the content standards and understanding Shakespeare, too. AMAZING!

Impressed again!

I purchased the Literature Guide for The Great Gatsby and was thrilled, but now am even more impressed with Macbeth. I would really recommend these lit guides to teachers who don't have a lot of extra time or don't want to take the extra time to write their own materials. Although I understand Shakespeare, teaching his plays are another story. This guide really gives me the confidence to be an expert on Macbeth, since it covers the play so well. Again, I would really recommend these lit guides for any teacher--I am looking forward to more titles!

A great book both for Hispanics and those unfamiliar with the Hispanic culture. Very thorough text on Hispanic culture and how to effectively market and provide needed services to this community. Packed with educational material and actionable strategies for tax preparation offices. The book impressively reflects Blaire's experiences in marketing tax prep services to the Hispanic community and the feedback of other practitioners that have implemented Hispanic Marketing based on this guidebook.

Can't be overlooked for anyone that is truly interested in reaching the large and growing Hispanic market.

This is a great book at helping to understand the hispanic community and market. Different countries have different cultures and usually we are only aware of our own. This books helps you to understand what is important, insulting, trusting etc in their community. One small gesture could insult another culture unintentionally and ruin business opportunities for many in that culture. If you own a business and have hispanics in your community, buy this book.

Tripled sales for new Tax Franchises

Two brand new tax franchises in North Carolina used the techniques in this package their first year. They tripled the number of returns they did that first year! That got the Franchise's attention (one of the major three). The Franchise bought a book for EVERY franchisee and hired the author as a consultant.

The other two major Franchises brought the author in to speak/consult. They bought her book and are encouraging all of their franchisees to get it also.

This is an exploding market. Beat the major franchises to the punch and get a copy of this book. Read more about it at www.trainingresourceclinic.com

This book is so good that my fiance and I read it cross atlantic. Me in London, him in Miami. Written for an intelligent audience it doesn't talk down to you. Love the clear and easy to use lay-out. Talks about hot topics in a succinct but complete manner.

Targeted at both Marriage preparation as well as for Marriage enrichment. We have started to use this book for reference.

When my wife and I decided to get married, our minister told us that we should read this book. I don't enjoy reading "self-help" books, and I was pleasantly supprised to find that this was not one of them. It really hit on all of the hot topics that a couple really NEEDS to discuss before they get married. It is written with Christianity in mind, but I believe it is useful for anyone considering marriage. We get it for all of our friends considering the marriage journey. It is a journey, one that lasts a lifetime. This book helps to pinpoint some of the stumbling blocks that might cause the journey to end before its time.

A concise, easy to read guide to marriage or marriage prep.

I picked up this book to help me and my husband in preparing to present a marriage preparation course. It is wonderfully written and full of useful insights. We found the information most helpful and very complimentary to the materials we had already. It is written so that you can read one chapter at a time in the order that you wish. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in enriching their marriage as a couple or in a group or to anyone preparing for marriage.
