I've been waiting a long time for the new version of this pharm book to be published. As a nurse, nurse practitioner & educator, this book has been the easiest to understand & use in all settings. The systems approach to presentation of content is very helpful. I would recommend this text to any nursing or medical student.

Like Donna M. Fenske, who also rated this text, I had purchased many expensive Pharm Texts before buying the 1st edition of this text. At the time I was a PA-C Student at Stanford School of Medicine and this was the best text for successful completion of the program and certification as a PA-C. I am about to take my re-cert (PANRE) and will buy the second edtion. It is straight forward, no fluff and to the point. I think, at my suggestion, this is the current textbook for Pharm at my Alma Mater.... as it Should be! Thank you Virginia and Andrew, well done!

Pharmacotherapeutic for Advanced Practice: A Practical Approach by Arcangelo & Peterson is an excellent resource book with in depth descriptions of medications, herbal products and their uses, as well as dosages, including information on adverse reactions and drug interactions. An excellent resource!

I just completed my Family Nurse Practitioner Program. I have purchased several EXPENSIVE pharmacology books over the past three years, all which made the pharm complicated and difficult to understand. This book is the best, easy to carry and easy to read. The cover is wimpy so am going to take it to a graphics place and have a binder put on it so it does not fall apart.

Fills a very large gap in pediatric medicine

The Philadelphia Guide: Inpatient Pediatrics fills a significant gap in practical pediatric texts. Harriet Lane has long been the standard, but is difficult to use, impractical at times, and incomplete. This book, which conveniently fits in a white coat pocket, is an indispensible resource for medical students and pediatric residents and fills the holes that Harriet leaves open. It give practical and complete, yet concise information on presentation and management of the diseases commonly encountered by the pediatric inpatient physician. As a new pediatric resident, this book has become the most indispensible resource in my pocket.

As a user of harrriet lane for years...This book goes beyond. As an easy to read, comprehensive resource for almost everything you will see as an inpatient house officer, I would recommend keeping it with you at all times. It is filled with all the questions you find yourself often looking up on those late night calls. It gives you the one line answers you are always looking for. It has information on conditions from the most basic to the most obscure and what you need to know about them. It provides answers to treatment, diagnosis, and guidelines.

Most of all it helps you treat patients, provide better care, and teach you at the same time. It includes chart, bold type, and subject heading formats. This book is AWESOME!!! Get yours today

Using this review source helped me sleep better before the exam, because I felt ready for the "case-based" style of the boards that everyone kept telling me about. This is a great series, but I don't think it should be used as a stand alone review source. Case-based coverage of topics means that some topics are missed/not covered. However, the topics covered by this volume were very high yield for my exam. Definitely worth the money!

Behavioral made bearable

Not a big fan of behavioral science, but this book makes it bearable by focusing on what you'll be tested on and helping you distinguish similar conditions from each other. Good biostatistics section also included. Great information and great figures to help you understand the info. Strongly recommend - the rest of the series is also outstanding.

Run to the bookstore and buy this one!

I'm not much for writing reviews, but this book and series helped me so much I felt obligated to let people know about it. I'm very interested in psychiatry, which is why I applied to medical school, thus I wanted to write a review on this particular volume of the series. This book is composed of 50 case presentations with questions at the end of each case, followed by the explanations/answers to the questions.

The cases and explanations are superb, concise and get right to the "meat and potatoes" of every subject. After taking step 1, I can recommend this format without hesitation. I also thought the BRS Behavioral Science review book was very good.

There was a lot of material in the books in this series, yet I found myself getting through them quickly and retaining a lot of the information, I think because the material is so well presented and explained. Great cases and the format is tailor-made for current USMLE format. This author really understand what the board question writers are into. For me, this type of review was the best way for me to get ready for Step 1.

After studying like crazy for a full month for the USMLE, I needed a break from reading textbooks. I decided to check out this case-based review because a friend recommended it. I am still thanking him for this recommendation. This book and the other books in the series really prepare you well for the USMLE, because they get you used to the long clinical vignettes that made up most of my exam. The cases and explanantions are EXTREMELY high-yield and very concise but thorough. I recommend the whole series for anyone who wants to do well on the Step 1 exam.

Taking test 460 for Rural Carrier? YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-23
Let me start by saying, if you need help memorizing, and want to make a good grade on this test, you need this book with the cd's! I am a stay at home mom of three great kids ages 8,7,and 4 years old, I am also a "Part Time Mail Man" or so I call it, working on Saturdays as a TRC (Temporary Rural Carrier) with a local post office. A TRC does the same job as a RCA (Rural Carrier Associate) but is not required to take the postal exam to be hired on at the post office, unfortunatly, only gets paid about 1/2 the amount a RCA does. My post master reccomended I find and study this particular book, when he found out that I was scheduled to take the exam 460 soon. If it wasn't for this book, I don't believe I would have done as well as I did, I may not have passed at all. Memorization is not my strong point, by any stretch of the imagination, and to put it mildly, I was scared to death when I got the sample packet from the post office. But after studying this book with the timed CD's, (LOVED THEM!!!) for 4 days, taking the actual test was NOT difficult. THE BOOK IS EXACTLY LIKE THE POSTAL EXAM!!! I was hoping to make at least a 70% (the score needed to be considered for a permanant job). I received my test score a few days ago, and I AM EXCITED TO SAY I MADE A 97%!!!!! Get this book, it will be well worth it!

Just got my score yesterday from exam 460......

I just got my score back from taking exam 460 four weeks ago and I got a 95.4%! I purchased Mr. Parnell's Quick Course with 3 Audio CD's a week before taking the exam. I utilized all 3 of the audio cd's, the guide, the practice exams (both in the book and online), as well as the free online support. I'm a stay at home mom who didn't have time to take this test over and over again. Mr. Parnell's guide is absolutely ESSENTIAL to making a great score on this exam! It saved me lots of time and provided all of the support I needed to obtain a desirable score. I couldn't be happier with the results.

There are LOTS of other study guides out there, but in my opinion, they're a waste of time and money. I found no other guide out there that offered free online support, extra free online practice tests, an up-to-date study guide, a practice test audio cd AND THE MOST valuable tool of all.....his very unique & easy tips for the killer address memory section of the test! In fact, utilizing Mr. Parnell's tips for the address memory section, I found this part of the exam to be SO EASY!! That was the part of the test that created more anxiety and stress for me beforehand than I can describe in this review!

In looking for a job with the USPS, I found that it was VERY difficult to find out the inside track as to what to do, where to go, who to call, etc., etc. Mr. Parnell's guide walks you through everything, like a friend on the "inside" helping you every step of the way.

There is no other study guide that I would recommend for this test. Do yourself a favor and run, don't walk, to buy this one! Postal Exam 460 Quick Course with 3 Audio CD's: Complete Test Preparation in Less than 12 Hours

I took the Postal Exam 460 and can verify that all the strategies presented in this book are extremely helpful. The three Audio CD's and Practice tests are absolutely realistic and provided accurate preparation for the actual test. I highly recommend this book.

Very personal writing style

Review Date: 2007-01-16
T.W. Parnell, the author writes like he's talking to the reader. His style is funny, easy to read, but in no way skimps on information. His advice and practice tests were accurate and up-to-date (at least when I took the test in late 2006.) The audio CD's are very helpful for practicing, especially for the oral instructions section. I scored a 93 on the exam. I learned and practiced Parnell's strategy for the address memorization, which seems a little odd at first, but it seemed to work pretty well.

Bottle line- T.W. Parnell knows what he's talking about. This test is hard and takes a lot of concentration, but don't be discouraged. Just keep practicing.

Review Date: 2008-09-14
As a nursing instructor I highly recommend this book to my students. Nursing students have very little spare time to spend sorting through a textbook looking for "important" information. This book takes all of the guesswork out of reading the text. My suggestion is to read your textbook but study from this book and then refer to the text for further clarification if neccessary.

Great resource for study!

I would definitely recommend all of the "reviews and rationales" books. As a nursing student, I find this is a great resource book that highlights the important things. It takes a lot of time to read a textbook and I don't usually get much from it. This book composes the information in lists and also includes some helpful tables as well as things that are important to know for NCLEX. My favorite thing is the disc that comes with the book. There are approximately 45 questions divided into 3 tests for each chapter that of course gives a score and the rationale for the answer. This book is very helpful to me and I think that you would find it a useful resource as well. Hope this helps!

I am a senior nursing student working towards my BSN. This book helped me out a great deal. Sometimes textbooks go on and on about certain topics instead of giving you the basics (getting to the point). This book breaks pediatric nursing down to the science. It gives you the information without all the unnecessary mumbo-jumbo. This book is a great aid when reading your text or during lecture. I received a B (88%) out of my pediatric nursing course just from studing this book 90% of the time. Quiet as kept, a lot of nursing professors take their information and exam questions from reference books. Trust me, its well worth the purchase!!

This a tremendous effort on the part of the editors and multiple contributing editors. The format is subsystem based with extensive attention to standard formatting for each subject area. The major primary care maladies in each anatomical subsystem are covered in a clear, concise and easy to read format. Excellent reference for any practitioner. The authers are all active practicioners, mostly work in academic settings, and know very well what is needed for a board-style test. The questions are all high yield. The aswers are short and to the point. A must read for all residents and junior practicioners preparing for board or just a quick update of your knowledge. Well worth the money.

This book was extremely helpful for preparing for the NBME gross anatomy shelf exam. It has standard outlines of stuff you need to know and lots of pertinent clinical situations too.

I also have a recent past edition of BRS gross, and this book was far better. There are two practice exams at the end of the book with organized, detailed explanations, and the questions were very similar to those on the shelf exam. This book also uses pink ink to enhance the text, which is written in black. I would definitely recommend this book as a comprehensive review source.

I have looked at both BRS Gross Anatomy (Board Review Series) and this book, and I believe that this book, despite being about 200 pages shorter, is the perfect review book to accompany Netter while taking Gross Anatomy as an M1. A lot of people get BRS because it's longer, and they think that this makes it a better companion while you are actually in the class. It is a good book, and you would be fine if you got it, but I decided on this book because:
1) It's written better and more concisely yet still covers nearly all questions on MY exams.
2) It uses few diagrams and uses them only to make essential points clear. And the illustrations are "crammable." My beef with BRS is that it doesn't have that much more information than this book (and what it does have extra is lower yield anyway), but it is filled with muscle tables and crappy illustrations as if it is trying to replace Netter (or any other real atlas) but ends up clouding an otherwise fine review book. (I know Netter doesn't have muscle tables in the book, but it does have them on www.netteranatomy.com )

I have my anatomy text and use it, but to be honest one could probably get by with using only this book, Netter, and lecture and lab.

Outstanding review for Gross Shelf Exam

In preparing for the gross NBME shelf exam I used this text and went all the way through it in 3 days. The NBME mainly tests the important concepts with emphasis on the clinical correlations, which this book emphasizes. I was surprised that there were very few questions on the exam that I thought were outside the realm of what I prepared for (something I can't say for the previous NBME's I've taken: phys/histology/biochem).

My approach that worked well: Pick a region (i.e. thorax) go page by page through an atlas and refresh your memory on the relationships. Then read the chapter in your review book. I also read through all the netter clinical pearls in the hours before the exam.
