A Must Have For All Interns & Residents

This book is definetly worth the purchase. It gives a unique insight into the path we doctors take through our medical training. More specifically, Dr. Cooper tries to point out many of the pitfalls that can occur during the journey and how to avoid them. He gives examples of how all these things can and DO happen. These lessons are ones that are best learned from others mistakes as opposed to learning them firsthand as many have dire consequences. There are multiple examples in the book of interns and residents both either getting suspended or asked to leave from their programs for the mistakes that were committed. It's worth mentioning that these mistakes aren't uncommon and have been repeated by many of us already...hopefully without suffering from them like the examples in the book. It's an easy read and one that might save your medical career!

After reading this book, I bought two more copies for my nephews in medical school. If you ever wanted to know what goes on during medical internship, this is the book for you. It's scary how "on target" the book is. If you're a medical student or thinking of medical school, buy and read this book (and House of God) before internship!!

Essential for all Medical Professionals

Dr. Cooper has created a manual of what a new doctor must look out for in the world of a major hospital. The lessons taught can easily be applied to most other professions and will be invaluable to any new employee first entering the dog-eat-dog business world.

Hilarious and helpful!

This book is outrageous and real. It describes what it's like to be an intern or student on the wards in the hospital. It gives tips about what to do, and what not to do to survive the experiences. As someone who has gone through medical school, internship and residency, I can tell you that the anecdotes in this book, as well as the pieces of advice, are right on the money. I wish I had read this book before internship. But, even after residency, it is a lot of fun to read. It reminds me of a modern-day "House of God."

This book is useful for both students and clinical providers (my preceptors borrow my copy quite frequently). Your school will probably NOT tell you about it, because they want you to scour many books just to find the information that's included on one page of this reference! I'm in my 2nd year of an adult and womens health nurse-practitioner program, and wish I would have come across all these books a year ago. Very thorough yet concise information. THANKS to these authors for providing such a useful reference!

ESSENTIAL FOR ANYONE GOING THROUGH SURGERY ROTATION AND BEYOND

A little about me: I am an MD now working on my MPH at Johns Hopkins-
I ran across this book when I was browsing through Barnes and Nobles looking for a good study guide for my surgery oral exam....

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!

A must have! It encompasses all the essential points for each surgery in literally a page or two. I wish I had found it when I was starting the rotation! Though you may be skeptical that it is not thorough enough, believe me when I say that it is all you need to know in order to succeed on your written and oral exams... and certainly when you are being 'pimped' in the OR. I say, reduce your level of stress and anxiety when going through those long hours of surgery by having this by your side. It is as though someone poured through all the important texts and outlined the key points of each topic for you. The pages are as easy to read as the notes you would take for yourself.

Overall: Well-written, concise, and to the point. Just what a surgeon needs, actually.

This is a great book. I've had mild acne since my teens and I'm now in my twenties and the information in this book has made a huge difference in how I deal with my skin. My skin would probably be completely clear if I wasn't so lazy about it. (Sorry, I procrastinate a lot)But this doesn't mean that the recipes aren't effective. As it is I'm only getting pimples during PMS. I love the sesame oil. The adzuki bean & barley powder grain wash is amazing. You can feel a difference right from the first use. My skin used to feel very dry when I washed it and get very oily quickly. Now it's balanced most of the time and it doesn't feel tight or slick with oil. It's so soft too. I've seen huge results even with my inherent disinterest in doing this kind of thing for myself. So sad, love to research, hate to actually do it. If you have skin, this book is a necessity. The recipes are also very gentle. I also have sensitive skin which gets red at any excuse and I have had no problems at all. Get this book no matter what kind of skin type you have, it covers everything from hair, face, to body to diet. I love the washing bag idea. It keeps the skin very smooth and wrikle free since you exfoliate gently twice a day (at least it says you should) Very complete. Highly recommended.

Not one word of a lie- I have spent thousands of dollars on commercial products searching for the answer to my skin problems. Overly oily, acne, etc. On a whim I purchased this book, and will forever be grateful that I did! Within a week I had purchased the necessary items and will never look back! Think about it- what kind of skin do Japanese women usually have? Beautiful, smooth, white complexions!
I can't say enough for this book of recipes. Her other book is wonderful also and is worth the purchase. People with oily skin- don't be afraid of the oil!!! These recipes work!!!

Revel in Japanese beauty secrets and natural skin care

Review Date: 2002-05-08
Leigh stumbled upon some unique folk beauty care methods in Japan and set out to research the ancient techniques traditionally used by women to care for their skin and hair. The results of her efforts is a lovely book of recipes for scrubs, rinses and tonics utilizing food as a means of cleansing and moisturizing.

Ingredients include beans, vegetables and teas, most of which can ecomonically be found at grocery stores. With a small bit of devoted effort, these items are prepared to make facial scrubs, shampoo, moisturizers and other cleansing basics. As most ingredients can be found in organic forms, this would be a good book for those with sensitivities to commerical products that are laden with perfumes and dyes. Costs for these homemade preparations are a fraction of what you pay in a store for prepared products!

After just a few days of using the Pearl Barley and Pink Bean Powder face wash, it became apparent how lovely these recipes are. A few friends were induced to also try the scrub and immediately everyone noticed how smooth and supple their freshly washed skin was. Dry skin was softer, oily skin less stimulated, and sensitive faces were clear and fresh without irritation.

This book has easy to follow instructions for skin and body care routines for all skin types. For people who want to move away from commerical and animal-based cleansing products, or just switch to a more natural form of beauty care, this is THE book!

I bought The Outsiders and was pleased, so I decided to try The Mircale Worker. As a new teacher, I am constantly searching for things to introduce to my students. I just finished my student teaching, and WISH I had these guides to make my life easier! I am starting school in a few weeks, and cannot wait to make a great impression on my colleagues and students with my lessons and planning done well in advance. This guide has everything a new teacher needs to feel confident that we are hitting the required content standards, getting our students ready for assessments, and helping them to enjoy the required literature along the way. Highly recommended!

I cannot believe everything this guide has! I can just copy the worksheets and handouts and everything is done for me. This really makes entering the new school year a bit easier. I have an entire unit done! What a great feeling! I would absolutely buy from this company again and I am recommending it to my colleagues.

I am so excited about this book! I just bought this from their website, and received mine yesterday. It has lessons for teaching the content standards, which I think is really cool, because most of the books our kids have to read have no decent materials related to them. I have been trying to come up with ideas for teaching the content standards, but now I can do that while I teach them the required novels and plays! I think the price is reasonable, because this is not just a book full of questions and answers like most of the books I have found. It does have comprehension questions, but it also covers things like character development, analogies, theme, etc. so I don't have to make them up myself. School starts here soon, so I am looking forward to trying this out.

Field Marshal Mannerheim's early years
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-31
In many of the earlier accounts of Mannerheim's life, particularly Finnish ones, Mannerheim appears on stage in 1918, fully-formed and ready to take the lead. This book focuses in on the least-known part of Field Marshal Mannerheim's life - his early years and the time he spent in the Imperial Russian Army up until the Bolshevik Revolution. His happy childhood in an aristocratic Finnish home was ended by his father's banlruptcy and his mother's death. He was sent away to a military school, which he hatedand from which he was eventually expelled. The military life itself did appeal to him however, and, like many other Finns in the nineteenth century, when Finland was a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire, he entered the Russian Army where he served as a cavalry officer in both Guards and Line Regiments.

His service included fighting in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905 and a 2 year reconnaisance expedition through the border provinces of China in 1906-8. He fought through the First World War - at the time of the Bolshevik Revolution he was a Lieutenant-General commanding a Cavalry Corps. During WW1, he was a protege of General Brusilov (the "Brusiolc Offensive - one of the more successful offensive actions in WW1 and to date one of the battles with the most casualties of any in history). He returned to Finland as a refugee but almost overnight assumed the historic role of Commander-in-Chief of the White Army which he led to victory in the Finnish Civil War of 1918. For the rest of his life, he was one of the most controversial and important political figures in Finland.

Mannerheim's opinions and policies as a Finnish soldier and statesman were deeply influenced by his experiences in Russia. By taking a fresh look at Mannerheim's early career in Russia, this book makes his later involvment in the development of independent Finland easier to understand.

Contents
I - The Formative Years
II - Early Years in Russia
III - Across Asia
IV - Last Years in Russia
V - The Years of Preparation

At only 159 Pages, this is a short book. There's 4 B&W photos, 4 Maps and an extensive bibliography. First published 1970. It's best read immediately prior to the author's subsequent book, Mannerheim - The Finnish Year (which was only published in 2000). However, it's interesting. If you're interested in Mannerheim, it's well worth the money and quite well-written.

The author, J E O Screen, was Librarian of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at the University of London from 1972 to 1988. He's written a number of other books and articles on aspects of Finland's military history.

Was there ever a wiser statesman than Mannerheim? In every stage of his career he generally found himself the wisest man in the room. This well-researched book shows how the father of independent Finland (his weakest language) acquired his knowlege of things military and the world.

Mannerheim was of the old Swedish nobility who effortless had made the transition between loyalty to the king of Sweden to loyalty to the Tsar. This group which made up about 10% of the population and made up a large segment of the elite. Being nobility, Mannerheim had few career options particularly after his father went bankrupt. After a rather disasterous tenure in Swedish military school, he managed to make his way to St Petersburg where the combination of a military career and advantageous marriage allowed him to enjoy the high life of the waning days of Tsarist Russia.

J.E.O Screen tells Mannerheim's story succinctly and well, covering Mannerheim's career in the Russo-Japanese War, his espionage trip through Central Asia, and his career in WWI where he won the Order of St George for heroism. The book concludes with Mannerheim leaving St Petersburg for Helsinki and an uncertain future. It is this later period which showed Mannerheim in all his greatness. This book showed how he was able to reach these heights of glory.

This is an excellent, well written book which fills in many of the details of the Marshal's life which he omitted from his memoirs. His modesty and sense of privacy caused him to neglect to discuss many aspects of his life, his achievements, feelings, concerns with social reform, and a few events which he might have considered to be failures. The book presents a clear picture of a very complex and honorable man liing in turbulant times. He comes through as a very human person.

There are a great many details of his life which I have never before read. I highly recommend this book to those who hold the Marshal in high esteem and to any who enjoy reading about very accomplished MAN.

Mannerheim-Finland's George Washington
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-18
Carl Gustav Emil Mannerheim is to Finnish history what George Washington is to American history. Both were soldier-statesman involved in huge political, social and military upheavals both in their younger careers and even more so in their more senior years. However unlike Washington, who was separated by 3,400 miles of ocean from his powerful foe,Mannerheim in World War2 had to contend with an enemy just over the border. Three years ago a Finnish diplomat in Canberra sent me JEO Screen's small- but excellent- book (159 pages),' Mannerheim-The Years of Preparation,' a publication that concentrates on the great Finnish Marshal's early life. From aristocratic stock, Mannerheim entered the Russian cavalry(Finland's sovereign at that stage was the Czar)and like the young Washington, and indeed the young Winston Churchill, was always involved in larger-than-life events.Whether at ceremonial functions, such as the coronation of Czar Nicholas the Second,or fighting in the Russo-Japanese War(1904-5), Mannerheim was always to the forefront, being involved in reconnaissance work in the Battle of Mudken, having his horse shot from under him on one patrol. Screen notes that Mannerheim's fearless bravery in the ill-fated Manchurian campaign would be repeated many times during and after World War 1. Indeed. Between 1906-08 Mannerheim turned into a latter-day Marco Polo with his great horseback expedition, on behalf of the Russian Army, across Asia. Ostensibly he was to accompany a French professor, Paul Pelliot, on an archaeological tour but in reality he was to gather political and military intelligence for the Russian General Staff whose interest in China stemmed from their expansionist dreams (something Mannerheim would have to confront later as Finnish C-I-C in the Winter War of 1939-40). It has to be remembered that Russo-Chinese relations were as strained in this period as they would become half a century later during the Cold War period. Screen gives the reader a brief historical context to Mannerheim's mission. This book is like an entree, it leaves you wanting more and there is so much more about the man who became the greatest Finn of all.Unfortunately Screen finishes his book with Mannerheim departing a disintegrating Russia, controlled by the Red mob, and a brief summary.Perhaps, the book could have been extended somewhat to include more about the declaration of independence period and the ensuing White-Red struggles for control of Finland's soul. Nevertheless this a fine book about the early life of a great man from a small country. _

Warren Levinson is a genius! This book is absolutely brilliant. I would recommend it to almost anybody who doesn't like dumbed down books like Lippincott. Levinson's Microbiology is clear and comprehensive. It tells you exactly what to focus on, and cuts out extraneous details. The immunology section is even better! You'll love this book. The questions are even fantastic in helping you remember all the bugs, and the quick summary reviews at the end make this book worth your while. One recommendation for the next edition is to add more clinically relative laboratory perspectives. Make tables and keep reviewing until the day boards comes.
