I'm amazed at how much I didn't know about my body. This is full of very valuable information. I wish I would have discovered it years ago. A friend recommended it to me because I shared my desire to get pregnant. This is the kind of information that young women should be exposed to in school. It might help them avoid unwanted pregnancies if they knew more about timing and natural signs that their bodies give them each month. I will certainly recommend it to my daughters.

Hi! I did not read this book yet but my close friend Brandy said that THIS BOOK IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ!
I have a baby now who is 6 months old and the method described in this book looks very interesting. Also, sounds like a hilarious read with some good facts about understanding your body. Nothing like a book with some good humor in it.

PS- Brandy is pregnant!

I bought this book as a gift for my 16yr old niece. The very next day, she told me how much she loved the book. She even cried reading it. I think it's nice to find reading materials that can move the minds and feelings of teenagers.

I skimmed through the book before I gave it to my granddaughter who just turned 13. I thought it had some well written stories that a teenager can relate to and a lot of food for thought. She was so happy to get it, since she had the one for pre-teens also and really liked it.

Once again, "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books has a hit. This is a wonderful gift for young teens with its easy read of short stories on pertinent topics and experiences teens face. Teens I have given it to as a gift have loved it and purchased the next in the teen series. Also a source of good talking points for those anxiety ridden moments or social issues teens face.

An Amazing Read

This book is a valuable resource to anyone who is caring for an elderly family member. While reading the often funny, always touching, occasionally horrifying memoir, I learned so much about caring for my aging mother. This is rich with advice, examples, and brilliance. Thank you, Jackie, for sharing your story with us. I will buy more copies and give them to my friends whose parents are approaching the age where they'll need some care. I am also now taking assessment of my own behaviors as I get older; I don't want any of my bad habits following me into my golden years! It is clear from your Jake Tales that these habits may become exaggerated as we get older and I don't want my kids to have to deal with me if I'm going to be difficult

Great Tips & Techniques for Dealing with Irrational Elders

Review Date: 2008-11-16
This is an excellent book for those who find themselves frustrated by the behavior of elders who are suffering from just enough dementia to be wreaking havoc, but not enough to be institutionalized. I read the book in one evening because I was desperate to learn how I might deal with an elder's belligerent outbursts, illogical thinking and unwillingness to accept help. The author faced similar issues with her father and her examples rang 100% true to me. At the end of the book, the author provides specific techniques and tips for modifying the elder's behavior. I tried some of her suggestions the very next day, and it worked! The sense of calm that I gained, knowing that I now had a "toolkit" of resources and ideas from this book, was invaluable to me. Save your sanity - get this book if you are dealing with demented elders now, or think you might be in the near future!

As a professional caregiver coordinator for a local Area Agency on Aging I read a lot of books on caregiving and Alzheimer's disease. This is the best book I have read on the subject. The story is told with humor, but it is full of excellent tips and education on the subject. A must read if you are a caregiver caring for an Alzheiemr's loved one.

I got this wonderful book about a year after my mom passed. I still refer to it so much that it is dog-eared, for information, resources and to enjoy Jackie's humorous writing style. (Okay, I admit it, I stole her idea of quoting artists and thanking them!!! I thought that was brilliant and it added a whole new dimension of enjoyment of the book for me!!!)

The book really helped me understand that the many feelings I went through while my mom was ill were NOT abnormal, and that my attempts to help were not in vain, although with this resource, I could have figured out even more and better things to do - - especially calling in APS early on. I truly think my mom's frequent infections were caused by lack of cleanliness at home and I COULD NOT get my parents to accept help with cleaning. I even hired a geriatric care manager, who recommended services that my parents would not accept. I think I would have been able to get them to accept a lot more services had I read this book first - - or at least I would have had some ideas to try.

I had the additional drawback of living 1500 miles from my parents, which is why I ended up hiring a geriatric manager (who saved MY life by just BEING there so many times when I needed someone to talk to, which Jackie points out is so important - - to have people to talk to about the elder you are caring for.) But I found that even on two extended trips to be with my family, I was unable to get the concrete results I wanted. That's why I think involving professionals, such as APS and the police, would have been so helpful if I'd thought of it at that time.

In a nutshell, this book made me feel like I was hearing from a very dear and knowledgeable friend with reassurance on a most confusing and difficult situation. I continue in my quest for info on elder care, but this remains far and away the most helpful and most enjoyable book I have read on the subject. Thanks Jackie!!!

Helped so much!

This is a good book for anyone trying to help elderly parents. I found the style of writing, relating all things to old tv shows, sometimes distracting and confusing but the information in the book was so worth the read. It gave me strength and focus on dealing with my Mom. I am still continuing to find resources through this book and it is really a valuable tool.

This book is exactly what we needed! My 8-year-old daughter and I just finished reading it together and it was a perfect way to introduce her to puberty and all it entails. It is written for young girls in a way that doesn't talk down to them but is also completely appropriate for girls 8 and up. I appreciated the discussions about the emotions and difficulties girls face during puberty, beyond just the "facts." My thanks to the authors! I will be recommending this to all of my mom friends who have girls.

This book is a great introduction for 8-9 year old girls on how their bodies work. I thought it had just the right amount of information for my 8 1/2 year old. She is not ready for, or interested in, detailed scientific descriptions about the "facts of life." The material is presented in a very straightforward way and covers a wide range of topics from dental care, to shaving, to menstruation. The book helped me introduce topics to my daughter in a very matter-of-fact way without embarassment or making a big deal out of it. I will be recommending it to my friends with young girls.

Where Was This Book When I Was Growing Up?

The Care & Keeping of You:
The Body Book for Girls

Where was this book when I was growing up? What a great book for girls.

As a mother of three girls and a grandmother of four girls, I give thumbs up to The Care & Keeping of You.

I began reading this book with my nine-year-old granddaughter, Autumn. She enjoyed learning about how to brush her hair, and her teeth. She loved the illustrations and the advice. We each took a turn reading.

When it came to the chapter about her period, she said, "Please don't make me read that part, right now. I want to read the rest of the book, but I want to wait until I'm around 12 to read that part."

I told her, "Sure, we can wait. But at least you know the book is here, if you need to know about it."

She is growing up in a home with a mom and two older sisters, and her mom as already had "the talk" with her.

The chapter about developing is great. All girls don't develop at the same rate. Some are uncomfortable because they aren't developing, while others are unhappily, developing too fast. It tells the girls that they are all different and that they have many other great things about them. They should focus on their smiles, or their talents, not what others think about them. Above all, hold their heads up and keep good posture.

I think a book that answers all the questions a girl will have, growing up, is a great idea. This book also encourages the girls to talk to their mothers or an adult they can trust.

M. Iam seriously addresses intimacy issues and provides a step-by-step deep relationship-nourishing format that begins with the art of exploring the pleasures of the Kama sutra from the vantage point of the couple's balanced physical, mental and emotional energy. In addition to initiating and maintaining the purely sensual aspects of love-making.

Everyone should read this book. I have read a lot of relationships and sex books. This one, by far, is the best for me. Was almost like a total
pleasure, I am giving it as a gift for special occasions and recommending it to everyone I know.

Wow. this is the perfect book for busy, active people who want to keep their sex life alive, but who don't have time to spend learning. When I thought there were not any more sex "techniques" I could learn from a book, this book just amazed me. This book just transformed my sex and it is never going to be better than after reading it. I've read my share of sex books but this one is very informative, gives great advises and covers many areas of relationships that are not covered in other books.

Sex and the Perfect Lover is a guide for those who wish a relationships with love pleasure, and intimacy, This is by far the best book I have ever read. The style of the book is easy, clear and perfect to understand and the illustrations of the kamasutra are excellent. The exercises and illustrations are creative, playful, and unusual, such as rewriting a recipe in sexual imagery to create an appetizing and erotic plan.
I've shared it with some friends. I'm definitely going to give a copy of this book to my friends.

With over five million copies sold, this book is one of the most read texts on nutritional health. I say "text" because it measures in at a good inch and three-quarters thick. Written by a certified nutritionist and a bona-fide MD, it is neatly divided up into three parts.

Part I, a quarter-inch thick discusses the basic principles of health and nutrition. This section lists and explains the various kinds of nutrients and food supplements.

Part II, by far the biggest section of the book measuring in at an inch and a quarter, provides the reader with an A-Z listing of many common disorders (such as backache or diabetes) and what you can do about them from a nutritional point of view.

The book ends with Part III, the last quarter-inch of the book, which is devoted to traditional therapies and conventional treatments that can be used along with a nutritional support. Here you'll find info on treatments such as chiropractic, massage therapy, color therapy, and so on.

I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the amount of info contained in this book and I can definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good nutritional reference book to put on their shelf when questions arise. Additionally, is also might give readers ideas of other types of therapies they could try for various medical problems. Other health titles I can recommend also include The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution for people who have trouble with chronic plantar fasciitis.

After many months of severe vertigo, trips to the local Emergency Room, and unanswered questions, finally a diagnosis of migraine. Frustrated with being told by my local Neurologist that I would have to live with the world around me in a constant spin, combined with uncontrollable vomiting and a severe headache, I was told by another physician about the book titled "Heal Your Headache". As a fellow health care provider I purchased the book and read it from cover to cover within a day. As I was under the constant influence of meclizine I thought what do I have to lose. I immediately started the diet and began to have at least a few days between episodes. After about three months I was down to one episode every three to four weeks. Being a nurse I knew that I had to get better control of these episodes if I wanted to continue to care for others. I continued the strict diet and was advised to add a preventive
medication, a tricylic antidepressant. I have been on the diet for 11 months and one medication at bedtime for 6 months. I know that this is a slow and realistic process. Yes, I have days when I want to cheat with the diet, but I know that the risk doesn't out way the benefit. As with many things in life we all want a "quick fix". I have found personally that in the field of medicine, a true answer is better than quick fix. I recommend this book to any one who is suffering from migraine symptoms. I have returned to nursing, and thank Dr. Buchholz for all his wisdom. My husband and I had the opportunity to meet with him personally for a consultation and found him to be genuinely concerned about helping me get better.

For those of you like me, doctor after doctor, with no results this is the book for you. This is the first time I have written a review for anything I have purchased. His 1-2-3 step book is working for me. I was suffering from a continuous migraine for almost 4 months and was ready to commit my self. No doctors in my area were able to help, medicines, CT scans, MRI scans I went through a lot (with 3 children at home). I read this book within 2 weeks I was off all of my medicines (preventive as well Topamax) I have some days with no headache at all. I am only three weeks into his 1-2-3 step program but I have not had a migraine yet. It is no joke and YES it is possible to control your headaches. He made me a believer!!!! SOOOOO worth the $11.16.

I feel like a new person. Thank goodness for this book. I don't know what I would have done without it! I loaned it to a friend, and it has helped her too. Just try it....you have nothing to lose!

Ina May Gaskin is amazing. The strategies offered in her book for dealing with labor pains, discomfort, and anxiety surrounding birth are some of my most favorite bits of knowledge picked up in the past 5 months preparing for the birth of my first child. I'm planning on a natural birth at a birth center with a midwife. It is attached to a hospital and there are Ob/GYNs on call at all times. I feel more confident in my ability to complete a natural birth (I'm healthy with no risk factors that would neccessitate medical intervention) with the knowledge that Ina May's book has given me.

Great information. Ina May retells stories from natural births at the Farm. I had never heard of the orgasmic delivery. Women need this book to remember the power of the human female body and to rebalance the emphasis toward more and more medical intervention in labor and delivery; to rebalance the high level of fear about labor and delivery. Great stories at the beginning and fantastic information at the second half of the book! Be sure to read it all. Also, see Ricki Lake's documentary - 'The Business of Being Born' - showing real home births and the history & progression of labor & delivery from natural to hospital. The greatest thing about the movie is that the last birth did not go smoothly, so it has the perfect balance showing when we are so lucky that medical intervention is available and capable, but reminding us that it is not necessary for every birth! - Surgery is there to save lives, not to placate fear. We are more capable than even we know!

My midwife recommended this book to me when I switched from an OB (who wanted to induce me a week before my due date despite my insistance on a natural birth)to a midwife. I didn't realize that all the birth experiences I had heard from my friends were mostly traumatic, and I was more scared about labor than I wanted to admit. Ina May's book felt like it was written just for me to help me cope with my fears. The first part of the book is devoted to positive experiences. The women are all different and each experience is unique. There are big babies, little babies, complications, easy births, etc. Something to assuage every fear you have. I'm actually looking forward to labor now, and even if you're not 100% convinced that the all-natural way is for you, this is still a great resource to replace your fears with positive feelings that you can do this.

I've had this book for awhile, but I feel it's time to finally review it. This cookbook is truly the perfect way to show family and friends that being vegan isn't a big deal--no really. I'm the only vegan in my family, but I can't wait to knock everyone's socks off at Christmas with these delicious recipes (I'm thinking blueberry lemon creme cake for the adults, and 'decorate-it-yourself' banana split cupcakes for the younguns). Please buy this book. I love exotic vegan cooking as much as the next person, but I don't have to funds to acquire the really weird ingredients. This book has those exotic ingredients, but also simple recipes with common ingredients. I'm hoping this book will propel me to official baker of the extended family, making each gathering a little less cruel!

I made the S-more cupcakes for a group of meat eaters young and old, and everyone loved them! The kids took seconds and the adults asked for the receipe!

Unlike others i went straight for a hard recipe. Well, for me at least :) Orange creamsicle cupcakes! After my bf helped me figure out I would have to turn up the heat a little to make the orange pudding, (evil electric stove) it was smooth sailing. They came out fantastic and noone at the party had any idea they were vegan until we told them. The orange buttercream frosting is to die for btw.
I also made the mexican cocoa cupcakes that day. They tasted great but i had a little spill over and the tops kept popping off. I think that was me, not the recipe!

I've had this cookbook for a couple of years now and have easily tried out half the recipes, all with excellent results! The recipes are easy to follow, even the more complicated ones, and produce great treats every time ranging from the simple to the decadent.

I get repeated requests for the gingerbread, chocolate chip pumpkin, and almond cupcakes (which I make without the apricot filling and with almond buttercream frosting). The green tea, chocolate stout, and banana split cupcakes are all delightful as well. In addition to the recipes the authors include hints, tips and tricks to answer baking questions and give additional options.

All this and vegan too!
