I thought it was very good and indexed well. Some of the links are dead, but that's the nature of the Internet. I don't expect the authors to know if a site is going to hang around. I hope there's a 2000 edition.

Invaluable! A great roadmap to a fun new world!

The Internet is a wondrous place, but often hard to navigate when it comes to making it a family sport rather than a solitary activity. Jack Sanders' guide is a real treat, showing how the family PC can take the place of the library, the AAA, the yellow pages and roadmaps all at once. Don't plan to leave home on vacation without it! Some sites may be outdated, but that's the reality of the everchanging 'Net (and it would take a real nerd to search deep enough to find them). As for the rest of us family folk, this is the first book that turns the 'Net into a funhouse. The research, insight and all-round heart in this guide turns the vast Internet into a family playground! What a book!

"Program" or "Services" ???

If you are considering buying this book then you are likely a parent with a child with a learning disability. I am a parent of a child with a learning disability. I have found that I MUST advocate for my child. Entering College as a Freshman is another life transition. These life transitions can be so very difficult for these students. Students with IEPs in High School will likely need a Structured Program. "Services" will simply not be enough. "Services" require the student to seek them out. Students with learning disabilities entering college have not yet developed the maturity to be an advocate for themselves. Hence, the need for a "Program". These programs have additional fees indicating that they provide additional services not provided for students without a disability.

I like Peterson's Guide a bit more because it organizes those schools that have "Structured/Proactive Programs" from schools that simply have the services that all universities are required by federal law to provide. The Peterson Guide lists detailed information such as number of staff supporting the program, number of students enrolled, orientation, diagnostic testing, tutoring, written policies. Even if you have a copy that is a few years old you can still compare and contrast schools.

This is still an excellent guide.

Because all public colleges and universities have to make reasonable accommodations for qualified students with disabilities (i.e. students who can perform the college work with minor adjustments), these guides are a waste of time, paper, and ink.

They imply that students with disabilities will only be eligible to receive accommodations at certain colleges--and those institutions are doing it as a 'favor' as opposed to this being the law.

As a person with disabilities myself who completed both her undergrad and graduate degree, I empathize with the high emotions that the prospective college students and their families might have while reading this book. I've also dealt with high school personnel who had formally discouraged me from going to college only because I had been in special education.

However, finding out federal and state laws (and remembering that your state cannot trump the federal laws with their programs) is a much more useful alternative than limiting oneself with outdated college application advice.

Yes, I dealt with a college administrator who attempted to kick me out because of my disability, but knowing my legal rights and responsibilities in the college environment made the critical difference. Subsequently that same administrator left while I went on to successfully complete my education at the same place I had initially enrolled at. Self-responsibility and advocacy is the key for an effective college experience.

If (and this is a very big if) Mary Beth Kravets and Imy Wax really wanted students with disabilities in college they would be insisting the same and providing their readership with accurate information. Shame on them for misleading people with outdated prescriptives!

This book is very frank about what it takes to get into med school. It is, at times, inspiring in that it made me want to pursue a career in medicine even more. But, the book is also very honest about the difficulty of getting into school as well as the not-so-fabulous aspects of being a doctor. I think it's a must-read for any serious pre-med.

This is the perfect book for people who want to do something to promote human and community values based on feelings other than greed, self-interest, or the affirmation of ethnic identity. There's a lot to do...every good thing in the world that individuals cannot do for themselves and that does not have a profit attached to it!...and Arthur Blaustein has as clear a notion of what these tasks are as anyone going. Both in government and in teaching, he's had a hand in showing what can be done... and the gratification and human connection that can come from this kind of action. Without it, our society struggles to find its soul and preserve its democratic feeling. But these possibilities are no secret. Where, in fact, would the world be without them?...or without Arthur and people like him who patiently and steadfastly draw them to our attention?

I find myself giving lip service to my desire for community involvement and feeling genuinely grateful for our environment and freedoms--yet not putting my thoughts into action. With MAKE A DIFFERENCE, I can finally begin to search for ways to contribute. It provides contact information and an overview of many organizations, whether they are year-long commitments or just several hours a month. I appreciate the resources it provides--the list of important and wonderful novels and the information resources. The author's impassioned plea to us to be responsible citizens is heartfelt and inspiring. It reminds us that those who give are the true receivers...of the gift of meaningful experience.

Politically Leftward Slanted Book

Politically Leftward Slanted Book
This book aims not to influence America's youth into making good personal decisions about where to volunteer their valuable time but instead attempts to pound in the values of America's left wing. Sure, Mr. Blaustien makes refenence to indisputably good doing orgainzations like the American Red Cross and 4-H but he also shows a blatant political bias in his sections on 'Gay and lesbian rights' and 'women's rights.' He must not even be able to contemplate the thought that some people differ with his views on these issues. A book with such an honorable title 'Making a difference' is tainted by Mr. Blaustien's listing of orgainzations such as 'Choice USA,' 'National abortion rights action league,' and 'National network of abortion funds.' What if I, or and of my many peers doesn't think these orgainzations are noble? Why does Mr. Blaustien ultimately turn so political? And if he truly believes his position of abortion (for choice) is superior, why doesn't he tell us about organizations on both sides of the issue and let America's youth decide based on studying the issues? Likewise he is similarly politically slanted on the issue of 'gay and lesbian rights.' Why must he push his beliefs on others instead of providing readers with a listing of organizations that represent different points of view?? This book is not a comprehensive guide to volunteering, it is a political statement, period.

On the other hand...

I find it interesting that the above reviewer gave this book 1 star for not being more even-handed, saying it's too left wing, then went on to write a review that is so blatanly biased and right wing! As a Republican I'm disgusted that this person has such narrow tunnel vision and a laughably bad radar for hypocrisy. The book supports good causes, and not just the ones used as soapboxes by either political party. If you're looking to do something more with your life then you'll find it useful and enjoyable.

A helpful portion of the material needed for exam prep
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-23
The book is well-written and edited. Content seems a bit 'thin' in areas (as with a similar book for prep for this exam), but that is probably due to the nature of the exam and its material. The practice exam included with book may be helpful, but there are others that are much better.

The exam covers quite a bit of material and skills, so plan to include other study materials in addition to this book.

Even with its weaknesses the book is a good value.

After reading both this book and the 70-297 Sybex book, there is no comparison. This book does not cover anything that you don't already know if you are on the MCSE track. It seemed to be more written for someone that is just taking this exam... and hasn't studied anything for the other 6 exams in the MCSE track. My advice, spend the extra $ and get the Sybex book by Brad Price... it will be money well spent, and you may actually learn something you don't already know... I know I did!

The previous reviewer doesn't seem to understand the concept of exam cram books. They're written specifically to give you an idea of what's covered on the exam. They shouldn't be compared to $60, 800-page books that go into great detail about every little nuance of the technology. Crams are $30 and overviews. Let's make sure we're comparing apples to apples here. If you want more depth, sure, go buy a $60 book, but don't unfairly criticize a book because it doesn't do what it never claims it's supposed to do in the first place.

I used this book as a primary study source for the Active Directory Exam and found it to be limited in many respects. While it does cover most of the required topics, it can be very light on substance in parts, and leave you bored to tears in other sections. Obviously it was written by a collection of authors and hence there is no real coherence to the book. However that said it is from Microsoft, hence authoritative, and does at least touch on the relevant areas. I would suggest using the resource kit to fill in the gaps, or Alistair G. Lowe-Norris book for better presentation or the subject.

If you can't attend a training session at a CTEC this book is a good investment. I am using it in combination with the MOC from course #1560 - where the MOC is unclear, the book fills in and where the book is light on graphical aids the MOC's Power Point slides and videos help out greatly. There are times and places where the book leaves things a mystery (like WHY you need a global catalog server for logon) and you will need a second resource, possibly a third. Also, plan on having a couple of computers on a LAN all to yourself for a couple of days - much of the learning is best accomplished by actually trying the exercises.

I found this book somewhat disappointing. Although it had some useful general hints I found it somewhat weak on technical detail.

It left me with the sensation that when this book was prepared the authors were not that familiar with the product.

I passed the accelerated exam in december of 2001 and learned practically nothing more on reading this book.

A very well written book by two highly experienced consultants! I have passed my 4 core tests in pursuit of my MCSE and am preparing for my first elective test. Needless to say I have poured through many books so far. This book, by far, surpasses everything I have read to date. I don't usually write these reviews, but I was so impressed with this book, I eagerly jumped on Amazon to leave these words. It is painfully clear that numerous other authors are either 'paper MCSE's', or non-techie pub types that only consult with real MCSE's to write the book. Material for this test is already extremely subjective, but Gary and Bob's real life examples from previous consulting jobs painted a crystal clear image into my head time and again. I fully plan on using Sybex in preparation for my next test, too (70-220, also written by Gary and Bob). Great job guys...keep up the good work!

This book was a great finisher for my studying of the 219 exam. This book is clear, concise and to the point. The writing style is easy to understand and the key points are very appropriate to the exam.

This book covers just as much real world concept as testing concept which gives it more value because you grasp the main differences between Microsoft recommendations and the reality of AD design.

This book assumes you are using it as a supplement to your studies. If you have never read about AD design to not start here but if you have this will be great to help you solidify concepts.

Really good strategic & business considerations. The review questions helped establish strong understanding of the fundamentals behind the material. For a really strong showing on the exam, add a good practice test. These guys know their stuff & show it.

I thought the book did a good explaining all the technologies needed to pass the exam. This along with Transcender or some other practice test software you should be ready for the exam. One thing about the book that I found odd - the book ended the last chapter (chapter 10) with this... "In the next chapter, we are going to take a look at how you will implement an efficient IP addressing infrastructure." Huh? My book only had 10 chapters. Maybe Chapter 11 got axed at the last moment??? Poor job of editing whatever the case.

This is a good book, it will get you studying in the right direction. The contents do cover what you will expect in the 70-297 test however I strongly suggest that in addition to this book you use an online test preparation tool (I used Self Test). You will need the practice when facing the verbose (-vv) questions on the test.

So after using this book, Self Test software and lots of studying I squeaked by on my first try!

Amazing adventures, and then more...

Where do I start ? This book is an amazingly detailed compilation of useful details, addresses, numbers and the like for a wide variety of adventures and yet somehow remains fun to read as well. This is probably in no small part due to the extraordinary color photographs that are found on just about every other page. Not only are many visually stunning, but most make you want to go there, right NOW !

The book is broken down in chapters, each covering a specific type of activity, e.g. safaris, trekking, ballooning, fishing, scuba, soaring, skydiving etc, providing general advice as to where to go and what to do and how, often with the basic technical knowledge to help one understand better what the adventures involve; and then it also manages to get down to the details necessary to help one finalize one's plans, with plenty of phone numbers, addresses, costs -and numerous web sites- etc, and all the advice and little nuggets that make the difference between a successful trip and the forgettable ones. The organization by type of activity is very attractive as it allows the reader to immediately focus on the adventure of choice without having to wade through countless listings of locations and activities of little personal interest, as in some other volumes. (Not that there is any adventure in this book that I would not be thrilled to engage in, but there is only so much vacation time -unfortunately- and one has to be selective.) Basically, you pick what you would like to do, and then the book gives you choices as to where to go and how to go about it. There are plenty of suggestions that will fire up your imagination too. This is a very comprehensive volume, with thousands of places and activities listed, and enough adventures to last one a lifetime, ranging from the (semi) sedate family adventure (like dude ranches) to the hair-raising experience one should not tell one's Mom about (like... well, I'll leave that one up to your imagination).

A useful feature is the objective reviews of outfitters and guide services that one may be hard-pressed to find in other places. A very comprehensive listing of outfitters and a good index help also to navigate through the mind-boggling amount of information the author has somehow managed to collect. (Where do I sign up to go and get some of the info first hand for the next edition ?) You want classic adventures ? They are here, from rafting the Grand Canyon to trekking the Annapurna. You want whimsy or downright exotic ? It's there too, and try the Miscellanous Madness chapter. And for those who think they have done it all, try the selected "extreme adventures" that pepper the book. (How does Shark Diving sound to you ?) All of the above with recommended guides, outfitters, and prices.

So, get the book, grab yourself a good chair, your favorite snack or drink, and enjoy ! Not only will you have wonderful dreams for many nights to come, but this little gem will help you make them become reality too. (And then -not to get too materialistic, but eh, I'm saving for a looong trip and anything helps- the book purchase will allow you to benefit from discounts from top outfitters that will more than pay for the book itself. How can you go wrong ?) Well, off to getting my equipment ready...

Did I say I liked this book ?

NFT is very useful as portable yellow pages with a map when you're in a new neighborhood. It's less useful as a tourbook for actually telling you what to do. When new to an area, though, it's great since it details everything in the area (banks, restaurants, whatever) and has superhelpful transportation maps for bus routes.

The wallet-sized "Not For Tourists 2007 Guide to Boston" may have been written specifically for the city native, but it's also very informative for the occasional visitor. Approximately 40% of the book contains maps of each city neighborhood and of Boston's surrounding locations. Each map is marked with icons for transportation, essential needs, and tourist musts. To help with finding specific addresses, cross-streets are even used in the address locater.
The "Not For Tourists 2007 Guide to Boston" assumes that you know what you're looking for, but you just don't know how to find it. No city-related fact is left out and all of the information is extremely current. The print is tiny, but nothing a good pair of reading glasses can't handle. Enjoy.

I just moved to Boston, and this book has been incredibly helpful in my (carless) explorations of the city. I bought my own after having monopolized my friend's copy for two weeks.

It has detailed maps of many different areas of Boston including one-way streets, parks, and the locations of T stops. It's one of the few maps I've seen that actually does a good job integrating the street map with the T maps. It is sturdy for carrying around with you, and has this handy band that keeps it from flying open in your bag. And there's a fold-out map of the whole city in the back!

The entire first half of the book is devoted to maps by neighborhood: a short description, and listing and locations of the following: restaurants, stores, grocery, museums, libraries, cafes, DONUT places (wow!), community gardens, gas stations, post offices, car rental... almost anything you can think of. No Goodwill listings, though. That's ok.

In the second part of the book you get elaborations on many of the above. Restaurant and bar prices, hours, addresses and very brief reviews, what to expect at different museums, bus etiquette, historic sites, a yearly calendar of events, and so on.

I've shown it to quite a few people and they've all been very impressed at the thoroughness of the maps. My only complaint would be that although they have the bus routes, they do not show you where the individual stops are-- you have to check MBTA for that. Other than that, I don't know what I'd do without this book!!
