I was hoping to find the different majors and programs that each of the schools have in this book, but was really disappointed. All it has is whether a school has good parking, good looking guys and girls or good food. The only interesting part is the community the school is located in. Otherwise it was a letdown.

While there were some simple errors and some confusing statements from the contributing students, this book was very well written and helpful overall. It gives you an inside look (mostly from students) into the college's Greek life, drug scene, campus and off-campus housing, among other things. If you're looking for a general overview of the many California colleges, this is a great book to accomplish that.

I have bought a lot of different books to help me to choose the right college for me. This book is so helpful, it has one of the main things I was looking for in a college guide: the most popular majors (which can tell you if the college specializes in the field you want to go into). It's very clear and tells you about almost everything you want to know from restaurants in the area to parking to housing to drug problems.

After reading this guidebook, I am definitely going to school in California. I'm from NY, and my parents want me to go to an Ivy League school ... either Cornell or Dartmouth, but I'm DYING to go to either USC, UCLA, Berkeley, or hopefully, Stanford.

After reading this guidebook though, I felt like I spent 4 years on each campus ... each school is covered in dept, around 40 different schools in Cali, and it's really easy to read. I get good grades, but I'm not much of a reader ... but the way this book is laid out is so incredibly easy to read, that anyone can breeze through the book and fall in love with any college in California.

Be warned though, they talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly in this guide.

For example, USC is not in the safest part of town ... but if you're from NY, like me, you'll be OK.

I'm more interested in what the student body is going to be like then some dumb US news ranking ... after all, I'm most likely going to meet my life long friends at college, including my wife! I don't want her to be some uptight Ivy nerd ... I want a nice cinnamoned tan californian!

Thanks to College Prowler's Calfornia Colleges, I have seen the light!

A Lovely Overview

This book (which I just ordered on January 17th and which is currently sitting on my desk next to SAT registration forms), while not ideal, is well-written and a gem for college bound juniors and seniors. As a junior in high school, I'm in the midst of college research and SATs, and being able to get an honest overview of a college is extremely helpful. There are more than three hundred colleges covered in this 900-something page book, including Oberlin, Tufts, and Brandeis, three of my chosen colleges thus far. You will need another source for your college search, as this book does not cover statistics and scholastic requirements so much as what the college is actually like, but I would recommend buying this book once you've narrowed your choices down to certain classes of colleges (state, size, private or public).

Great Book. A must have.

This book is one of the most informative books about colleges I've ever bought. This gives in your face information and not information from glossy college brochures. It is very useful because you get to hear from students who attend the particular college of what they feel about it. You can't get this info any where else. It centers mostly on the social aspects of the college but it also gives you which programs are the strongest, which are the weakest, if teacher's assistants dominate the classes, etc. This is definitaly a must have book.

Time for a new editor

As is typical for these books, the new edition is a warmed over version of the previous book. Unfortunately, the statistics are so old in some cases, the students to which they applied could now have their own kids in college. For example, the data for the U of Wisconsin SAT scores is at least 10 years old. Current scores total at least 200 points higher. Also the library data of 4.8 million volumes is over 1 million shy of the current figure. As they buy about 100,000 books per year that's a 10 year gap. Several other factual errors are easily spotted. There are no bars on Mifflin St-it's State St. Students work out at the SERF, not the NAT. The SERF was built at least 15 years ago. Overall a sloppy and sometimes erroneous piece of work.

I like this book a lot because it tells me information I want to know that I haven't been able to find anywhere else such as whether or not the student body is mostly liberal or conservative or whether or not alchol makes the scene at certain colleges. It gives the students' perspectives. You can find the student faculty ratio and freshmen retention rate anywhere. This is the book to read if you want to know more than just the statistics.

Written by students, this book distinguishes itself from other college guides in that you really get a good feel for the school, its social atmosphere, and its academics. Topics covered are eating and sleeping facilities, social life, alcohol, accessibility and friendliness of professors, the level of competition between students, extracurriculars, and much, much more! I'd recommend this book to anyone looking at colleges!

All in all it is a good book and covers a good variety of things that you might normally not think to keep. Know it's hard to cover everything in just one book but I was disappointed that several of the current collectibles weren't covered (or I couldn't locate them) in this book. You almost have to read or scan through the whole book because some items that weren't listed in the index are referred to under other parts of the book. Takes a bit of time to read through but very informative.

I bought this book because I have a lot of 1980s and 1990s action figures, comic books, magazines, trading cards, and the such. I was hoping to finally find someone to sell them to. Well, I contacted some people listed in the book, and ... I've still got the stuff. If you have something made before 1970, this book may be of use to you. But if your stuff was made after 1970, don't waste your money on this UNCOMPREHENSIVE book. Hey, Tony Hyman, how about writing/compiling a separate volume covering items made after 1970?

I found the book in the library and when I found I'd bookmarked 40 or so pages, I decided to buy myself a copy (used, for half price). Good advice for working through an estate, which is what I'm dealing with--what to sell to collectors and what should go through a yard sale. Collectors have been very nice to work with, if they won't buy my item they will recommend somewhere else. My first item to sell was a musical instrument; the collector gave me $50 more than the highest bid at a local music store. The book has been very reassuring to both my mother and me to know what's junk and what is worth 10 or 20 times more than we'd expect from a yard sale, or at least double what we've seen on ebay. For the most part, not for newer collectibles (past 1970s), but book has an extensive section listing collectors of fast food, pop culture, and similar items which may only be 10 or 15 years old. Look for an older edition at the library to check the format; I've found this to be an invaluable resource, and several friends have purchased copies of this book as they watch me go through the "old junk" in the house. We all use it so much that we simply refer to it as, "the book".

I believe I was ripped off by a dealer listed in this book.

This book promotes itself as a source for "honest" dealers and buyers for your antiques and collectibles.

I sent 2 pieces of glass to one of their "honest" dealers, who had me send them insured for $800 and $500 respectively.

Since then that "honest" dealer has disappeared along with my glass. Disconnected phones and so on.

In a call to the author in California, to see if he knew where the dealer had gone, since he had recommended the dealer in his book, I was welcomed with an attitude of no desire to even talk to me, let alone to be of any assistance.

I wish I had never seen this book.

This book is the worst hyped-up book I've ever bought. A total waste of money. There are NO progam rankings! Sure, they rank cheapest colleges and the acceptance rates of colleges, but let's face it, the most important factor is choosing a college for its paticular program in which you, the student, will major in.

You can get all of the other information on each of the college websites. The only reason to buy this book is to warm the fire through the winter season, or maybe to help level a very un-even table.

The encyclopedic reviews of the major universities can overwhelm the high school student. Students do intentionally shun books of such great girth, unless the title includes the words "Harry Potter." But, they are each a wealth of information, and this review is the most chock full of the bunch - better than Barron's, better than Fiske. . .

But, rather than seeing the numbing numbers associated with many of the Ivies, or the comparatively impressive numbers associated with so many other schools, this education - which is extremely important and even more dreadful in expense - may need more than a sterile review than what is (or can) be provided by a book seeking to cover such a breadth of information within the confines of hundreds of pages.

Encyclopedic reviews are not the books for all answers. They are sources to test the waters, to obtain some information, and then proceed to whittle down the "list" to a reasonable 20 chosen schools. When you have reached that time, it is then that the really well written and important books need to be read.

Loren Pope is something of a maven on the topic of college admissions. His masterpiece is "Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think About Colleges." It aids in finding establishments of education which do more than receive great students and manufacture them into . . . well . . . good or great students. He finds liberal arts colleges that receive fair or good students which manufacture them into great students. And, during his writing, he explains how each of the LAC's has a different character than the rest.

If you want more, there are two others on this same line of reasoning: "The College Admissions Mystique" by Bill Mayher and "Looking beyond the Ivy League: Finding the College That's Right for You" by Loren Pope.

In The Incredible Internet Guide To Comic Books And Superheroes, Jim Flowers takes the reader directly to websites featuring superhero and comic book characters, titles, artists, writers, films, images, audio, videos, software and more. This detailed and comprehensive guide features more than 1,300 character appearance chronologies, over 1,900 websites indexed by subject and category, a section on the X-Men feature film; as well as information on future Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman films. The Incredible Internet Guide To Comic Books And Superheroes is also a significant and highly recommended time saver for dedicated fans, allowing them to even bypass the main page of websites to go directly to the specific information they are looking for.

Okay, well I don't usually write reviews, but I have to step in and call out John Q. Public. His reviews seem to be everywhere and are perhaps the most zealus, nonsensical ramblings I have ever read. If you cannot find a website with accurate information on comic characters, then you have not looked hard enough. The fact that Mr. Public suggests going to the movie theater to find out information on heroes belies his true ignorance and, quite frankly, stupidity.

Essential Reference Guide for Comic Book Collectors and Fans
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-28
Unless you have read and remembered every issue of every comic book character that interests you, this book will greatly add to the pleasure and profit you enjoy from comic books.

As comic book publishers have gotten better at pushing for profits in recent years, story lines have become more complex and appear in more titles. As a result, it is easy to lose the chronology. What an incredibly nice surprise it was to find 207 fine-print pages of chronologies in this book! All of the most best known D.C. and Marvel characters are covered, as are some of the independents. For example, Batman/Bruce Wayne in the Golden Age covers three large pages of fine print type.

These chronologies have two uses. One is to follow the story line as a fan. The other is to help anticipate which comics will next rise rapidly in price. When the prices for the parts of the story before and after a comic are doing well, you can generally assume that this comic will as well. People who don't know the chronologies are at a disadvantage to collectors who do when the missing piece falls into a different title.

Another strength of the guide is that it integrates material in the form of information about the characters themselves with original art, comic books, figures, games, merchandise, cartoons, television, and films. Some of this material will tell you about upcoming plans for new products.

You can also access art that you can download to use as screensavers and icons, making your own computer much more fun to use.

If you are attracted to the writers and illustrators, they are presented, as well.

If you would like to chat on these subjects, you can locate fellow fans on-line.

The book also points you to search engines that have been optimized for comic book and super hero character searches.

A major benefit of this guide is that it takes you straight to the screen that has the material you are looking for. As a result, your time on-line will be shorter and more productive.

If you are not a comic book or super hero fan, you should consider giving this book as a gift to someone who is. It will be much appreciated. One of the best gifts any one ever gave me was a limited edition hardcover version of my favorite Uncle Scrooge comics that a read as a boy. I still treasure and enjoy it. Here is your chance to be very thoughtful, at a much lower cost.

After you have finished using the guide to increase your fun and profits, I suggest you consider where else a good understanding of chronology could make a difference to your enjoyment and profit. Perhaps you should consider the order of the development of characters in novels you enjoy reading. Or, in addition, what is the best order to read Shakespeare's plays in?

Get the order right, and your progress will be irresistible!

This was my primary resource in preparations for the exam, which I passed easily. Material is well presented, although I have found several mistakes and there are a lot of superfluous "lesson reviews" and "lesson summaries" at the end of each lesson.
In my opinion, the best parts of this book are practices and troubleshooting labs. I have set up a little virtual network on my PC (using Virtual PC and Virtual Server), and have done all of them. They really help you gain some practice using Active Directory tools under Windows. I had 2 questions on my exam in which one had to demonstrate practical knowledge of using these tools, and I have heard that Microsoft will add them more.

This book is pretty good along the lines of technical manuals. It keeps the information clear and lays it out in a way that makes it easy to understand with no fillers added. The activities at the end of the book are a little much, so I mostly ignored them. Unfortunately one thing this book lacks is ALL the information you might be tested for on the exam. For example, the book does not go into detail on the Authorization Manager. The new revisions might but check the ones you buy for it. Mine did not have it, however the software that came with the book asked questions on these different utilities that weren't covered in the book at all. It was a little suprising to be honest. But overall it was a good book.

Far too many technical inaccuracies

I'm sick of reading reviews about how a particular study guide is a good book for beginers. The title says exam 70-294, but this book falls a bit short. It gives basic coverage of active directory concepts and is technically inacurate in many areas. If your going to spend the time trying to learn this stuff, learn it right. A much better book on the subject matter is the active directory technical reference for windows server 2003, also by MS Press. In fact save some time and money... Just buy the technical reference. It will prepare you for both the 70-294 and 70-297 exams. Belive me, the only reason I read this book (70-294 self paced study guide)after reading the technical reference is because I was forced to teach a course from it.

I was depending on this book to direct me to the best campgrounds in the area. However, without a rating system, the book is only half as good. I use the California version as a bible for camping and was disappointed to find this missing for Oregon/Washington.

Our book is marked, highlighted, and falling apart from use.

My husband and I enjoy spontaneous traveling in our Motorhome. We plan our vacations by selecting how long we will be gone and what direction we will head. This is the freedom afforded by having a Motorhome and being empty nesters.

This book is fantastic. We have marked it with highlighters, "Post-It" flags, and even different colored stars. "Sea Perch" campground near Cape Perpetua in Oregon, is marked with a gold star. It is literally on the ocean, clean, friendly, and has beautiful scenery.

Since we travel year-round, I like the information on campground openings and Motorhome size limits, facilities, etc. The quadrant maps, detailed driving directions, and "Trip Notes" are invaluable.

I am a skeptic when it comes to ratings in books; to me, quality of an area is determined by personal preference. The descriptions in the "Trip Notes" provide an excellent overview to make personal selections.

We have shared this book and recommended it to MANY people.

Get it used and read the first 60 pages, the rest is old

This book is good but cannot stand alone as a SF writer's resource. The advice from the author is in the first 60 pages, and it is good guidance. The rest of the books is dedicated to potential publishers, success stories, and some resources you may not have known about or thought of. However, being printed several years ago, expect the info to be out of date. Your best bet is to get this book used.

A good book but not up to date

The best part about this book are the stories of how beginning writers broke into the fantasy and sci fi genres. There's even a large section about J.V. Jones' THE BAKER'S BOY novel and it's path through the maze of becoming a marketable novel.

Several articles on fantasy writing, including one by Joel Rosenberg.

Lots of info on various markets, including online resources.

Only drawback is that it's not up to date but it's a good source. It's only 5 years old so you can look at the companies that take fantasy, contact them for current info and send it out. Not too many books just for fantasy and sci fi so high marks.

Recommend.

Great Book. Out of Date.

This is a useful book. It would be an extremely useful book if it were more up to date. It was published in 1996. Given how fast this industry appears to be changing, much of the most useful info (publisher's data, agent data, etc.) is suspect. For instance, there is an imprint discussed in the book which no longer exists. There is a note on the copyright page which reads "Attention Booksellers: This directory is published every two years by F&W Publications. Return deadline for this edition is December 31, 1998." I really wish they had kept that up. There would be a 4th edition by now. That said, it still contains much useful info about the publishing industry in general and the insiders view from editors is great. Writer's Digest puts out good reference books. I would likely not have bought it, however, had I noted the pub. date initially.

Most Sourcebooks I've seen are simply lists of information with tiny descriptions after each item. This book not only has that, but it also includes many articles by known authors on some of the critical details of selling manuscripts. I definently recommend this to anyone who'd like a taste of how to get your work published.

Because of this book, I'm getting published.

When I was getting ready to venture out into the publishing world, this was the first "sourcebook" I purchased. I should have given this book only three or four stars as some of the contacts and addresses are out-of-date and a few publishers listed are no longer in business.

So why did I give this book five stars?

The advice and submission guidelines featured in this book not only got me started but three publishers I initially contacted from this sourcebook requested a full manuscript. From this book, one of them -- Dragon Moon Press -- has picked up my manuscript for a future publishing date.

So am I happy with this book? Try thrilled! :^)

This book was very helpful to anyone who wants to find magick shops or covens in your area. But it is a little out of date. We need one updated for 2000.

I live in the Boston area, and believe me, this book is a must-have for anyone practicing the Craft in a urban area, even one as pagan-rich as Boston. I thought I had found every store in the area, but the wonderful Miss Dunwich led me to hidden gems, several not even in infamous Salem, MA. A vital addition to any occult/Wiccan collection.

It is recommended that this book receive an update. Of 21 Mail Order Shops that I sent to, 10 are nonexistant to the US Post Office and I have only gotten catalogs from 2. I haven't even sent for information from other sections of the book because I have been so turned off by my waste of paper and postage. The information in the Who's Who section is interesting but if you read the back cover of your favorite books, you usually get a bio.

it's a good reference book but it needs updating

When i first bought the book I was overjoyed at the thought that I finally had the references I need to get my supplies and catalogs. When I would call or send for catalogs the business is no longer existing. It hard especially when you are living in a huge metro area. I need all the access I can get. It needs updating especially for the new millenia coming up. Please Ms. Dunwich update ASAP
