Great book, but the web addresses are about 80% out of date and not working. This is able to be worked around though. I had to buy this for class and I will keep it as a good reference as Robinson writes in a clear and logical way.

The first exciting government documents book ever!

Robinson brings to life the world of government documents in her exceptional work covering various important government issues such as the Government Printing Office, depository libraries, statistics, patents, trademarks, and copyrights, legislative, judicial and presidential information sources and much, much more. Robinson makes what would normally be bland information fun and interesting complete with graphs, recommended internet sights, and famous quotes from well-known government figures. I would highly recommend it for anyone entering the field of library science.

Tiller's Guide is an invaluable resource for the serious student or those who work with tribes on a professional basis. History and culture is kept to a minimum, while emphasis is placed on infrastructure, resources, demographics and economic development. This was a massive undertaking. The next step is keeping it current- a task equally as difficult. Problematic areas: By the time info updated, it will be out of date again. Also, for whatever reason, a few tribes have not been included.

Review Date: 2003-01-05
This tiny palm sized book is the perfect companion for your laptop on the go or your pc at home when it comes to getting information about music on the net. Covering a variety of subjects, one of the most useful elements is the listing and descriptions of obscure and not so obcure web sites relating to the music biz via the net. This little book clarifies technical infromation in a simplified style so you too can speak computer geek. If you are looking for a cyber community with musical artists being the common thread you will probably be able to find the fan or ant-fan site here. Some of the stuff is pretty funnny even if you are not into bashing others. The ever changing world of e-commerce is explored among other topics and although the cyber biz is changing as rapidly as dot coms go out of business it is an interesting read. If you like to shop for the best prices on your music there is a good site suggested, if you can't remember the name of a song except for a few didies there is a site suggested to help you fill in the blanks and bolla, a title is produced! There is something for every kind of music, from world to country and everything in between.Although the book is several years old most of the information and websites are still valid. A simple yet comprehensive guide to everything(well almost) music on the net. Recommended for people with time on their hands who need direction for music related topics, genres etc on the ever changing net. Cleverly written, the people at Virgin have made an entertaining piece of pulp to accompany you while clicking your way through the net.

A solid, highly recommended overview.

Pluses: This book has a number of unusual sites for Genealogical Research. It jogs the memory to new sources for the elusive piece of information needed to find your ancestor or cousin. The sites then lead to the information that you have sougth for years. It includes both domestic (US) and international sites. The latter are quite useful and otherwise hard to find.

Minuses: The book was first printed in 1997 and some of the sites have new URLs. For example Cindi's List has changed. (Experienced surfers can still find this invaluable site.)

Are you a systems administrator? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Dave Kleiman, Laura Hunter, Mahesh Satyanarayana, Kimon Andreou, Nancy G Altholz, Lawrence Abrams, Darren Windham, Tony Bradley and Brian Barber, have done an outstanding job of writing a book about the Winternals and Sysinternal tools in real-world situations that administrators can and will face on a daily basis.

Kleiman, Hunter, Satyanarayana, Andreou, Altholz, Abrams, Windham, Bradley and Barber, begin by showing you how to use Process Explorer and Autoruns to spot and eliminate malware autostarts, services, drivers, and processes. Then, the authors describe in detail, the tools developed by Sysinternals to illustrate this sort of advanced information and explain how to use them. Next, they show you how to use Sysinternals tools to monitor active sessions on a computer and how to discover which processes are accessing which resources. They also show you a better way to manage disk and file fragmentation on your volumes. The authors then continue by examining the data recovery tools made available to you by the Winternals team. Then, they show you how to make sense of the infamous Blue Screen of Death. Next, the authors show you how to monitor active socket connections. They also examine a few tools provided by the Winternals group that any software developer would find useful. The authors continue by discussing the available source code. Then, they cover topics ranging from advanced system optimization, to options available in a multiboot system with various versions of Windows, to data recovery for NT. Finally, the authors show you how to use screensaver with a perverted twist to it.

This most excellent book will show you how to bring dead systems back to life through the use of Winternals. Perhaps more importantly, Winternals software is capable of doing much more than that!

Surprisingly good, even if you only use free Sysinternals tools

I starting looking at Winternals shortly after Microsoft acquired the Winternals company. I almost didn't read the book, because I do not use the commercial Winternals tools. When I saw the book covered tools available from Sysinternals, I decided to concentrate on information relevant to me. I'm glad I did -- Winternals is a remarkably helpful book.

The most surprising aspect of Winternals is the focus on malware detection and removal. I expected the book to basically explain the tools and their options. I did not imagine the authors would provide multiple examples of fighting malware with Sysinternals utilities. Some of the discussion of kernel-mode rootkit removal is a little naive and outdated, given recent advances in the field. However, I really liked seeing more-or-less real-world examples of proper tool usage.

My concerns with Winternals are the same ones I usually express when I read a book by multiple authors: internal redundancy. Ten authors and one technical editor wrote Winternals. As a result, the Windows registry is "introduced" several times in the book. The same goes for popular tools like FileMon, RegMon, and PsList. Removing these redundancies is the job of the lead author or editor. Since Winternals seems to feature neither party, the book is internally redundant.

In some cases I felt introductory material wasn't necessary. For example, I didn't need ot read about DNS and Whois in Ch 8. I imagine most people reading Winternals already know how those protocols work.

Minor problems include appearances of odd text formatting and some screenshots being too small to really decipher. I didn't see many obvious typos, although the mention of "Syng set" on p 334 should say "SYN sent."

Despite these issues, I liked reading Winternals. Windows-centric security analysts, incident responders, and desktop engineers who are beginning to use Sysinternals and Winternals tools will find this book invaluable.

Woodalls North American Campground Directory is a valuable asset for any camper. It is a huge book, but the size is necessary to cover the campgrounds of North America. It is divided into east and west reagions and then alphabetically by state in each region. You an purchase the east or west region directories separately, but if you plan to camp in both regions, it it less expensive to purshase the North American directory. The section for each state begins with information of interest about different areas of the state. There is a map of the state showing the cities where campgrounds are located. The campgrounds are then listed by city and many of them are rated for camparisons. Last year's prices are listed to give the reader some idea of this year's costs. Phone numbers and directions to the campgrounds are provided as well. This directory is a valuable resource for the camper. It is a guide one can use for a couple of years before replacing it. This writer has been using Woodalls North American Campgound Directory since the 1996 edition.

I am new to HTML/XHTML and wanted a definitive reference book that told me about EVERY HTML tag - and exactly what were and weren't the correct ways to use them. After buying and reading about 5 other similar books, I finally got to this one and it is exactly right. All the other books cover useful snippets here and there, but they aren't exhaustive.

Note that this book isn't good for learning the basics. Rather, it is useful reference once you know the basics and need a source that tells you authoritatively that this such and such tag (e.g., 'p') does or doesn't support such and such attribute (e.g., 'padding') - fyi, it doesn't, except thru the 'style' attribute.

If that's what you need, then this is what you should buy.

Don't make the mistake of thinking this book will teach you how to code web pages using HTML and CSS. This is a reference manual that exhaustively discusses the mechanics of coding web pages, but it doesn't walk you through the process step by step. For that, I recommend O'Reilly's "Head First: HTML with CSS & XHTML." The benefit of this book is that it covers every aspect of HTML and CSS, including some which the W3 consortium has approved but no browser yet supports. It's best as a reference book for those already familiar with web page coding. It's full of surprises and "I didn't know I could do that!" moments, given its comprehensiveness.

Amazon is conning you.

AMAZON, SHAME ON YOU!!!!! You should state what edition and the date copyrighted in the book information and indicate whether there are newer editions.

Watch out. Though Amazon has it covered by the "look inside", the book entitled only HTML is the 3rd edition of a book that is in it's sixth Edition. Amazon has combined all the reviews for all the editions. This should not be done!!!!!!! I have always felt comfortable buying from Amazon, no longer. I did have a seller (ordered through Amazon)send me this edition for the full price of the 6th. He got the sixth to me, but it took my time to get it corrected. The 3rd edition is probably not even worth the $10 for the used edition, but is certainly not worth the $20 for the new. Don't be fooled! I can't believe Amazon is stooping to this sort of a con. The most serious problem is that much of what you learn in this edition is being put out to pasture in the next 5 years.

There is a World Wide Consortium that is trying to standardize language and browswers. HTML is being replace in the interim with XHTML and eventually XML. A new, more powerful, formating language, CSS, Cascading Style Sheets, is replacing any formating in HTML.

Many of the reviews you see are for the 6th edition. It does have errors (it doesn't stick to the more stringent XHTML as it should, and the redundancy is annoying. Castro's is annoying in that she sectionalizes the code and it's not clear at first what she's doing. I haven't yet seen the others that are offered.

I use it everyday - the older version

I have the 3rd edition and use it most everyday in my job. I figured it would be a bit outdated so I bought this latest version. The new version is essentially the exact same as the old version and I feel like I wasted my money. It's also missing the handy quick reference the older version had. However, if you don't have an earlier version, I would definitely recommend it. It's indispensable.

"Gee, how can I make some money from writing about the internet? I know -- I'll write some worthless stuff about getting connected to the internet (target group-African bushmen?), and then I'll just put down the on-line investing sites I found after a few days of random surfing." I'm sure a similar train of thought went through the author's mind just before he came up with this lemon of a book. At the time of this review, this book had a four star review average; these other reviews that said this book was "brilliant" made me laugh. Shakespeare is brilliant; this author's intentions are merely expedient.

I found it very useful to come to this book by someone who obviously trades for a living. The subtle insights that can only come from someone who does this for a living were clear.

The book contains lots of great humor, and ample material about how to trade effectively online and the best online sites around.

A real treat to read and lots to be learnt even for one like me who has been trading for a few years now.

Was a little surprised by the no-brainers who reviewed it pooly on Amazon and just didn't get that the book was for people serious about trading. An excellent book, made me a lot in todays volatile markets.
