Guides and Directories Books

I have a shelf full of movie guides, but VideoHound's DVD Guide (Books 1-3) is the one I use most.

Not only does this guide review movies, but it includes separate ratings for the DVD, reviewing video and audio quality as well as extras. I find this information invaluable when trying to decide whether or not to add a DVD to my collection. (I do wish they'd more consistently compare the DVD with a previous Laserdisc release, but that's a quibble as not many people have a lot of money invested in Laserdiscs.)

VideoHound's movie reviews are helpful, concise and readable. The books also include countless reference lists and indexes that incorporate the previous editions as well as the latest one. Each edition covers only new material, and does not repeat previous reviews, so you need them all. Any book of this type is outdated by the time it gets to the stores, of course, because of the flood of new DVD's being released. A Book 4 is due.

As the name indicates, the VideoHound DVD Guide only covers movies released on DVD, so if you primarily want a book that tells you about some obscure movie on late night cable, you might prefer their Golden Movie Retriever or Leonard Maltin's, Martin & Porter's or Halliwell's guides.

Better yet, get more than one and compare viewpoints. No guide's reviews are "perfect," because nobody agrees with any one critic all the time. (Roger Ebert comes closest for me, but his books are altogether different, offering a depth of detailed analysis beyond what guides like VideoHound attempt.)

Anyone who really wants to know everything there is to know about a movie should check out IMDb (Internet Movie Database), where, among many other things, they link to several reviews of even obscure movies, with up to nearly 200 for popular ones. (For a quick overview of critical opinion, try rottentomatoes.com, which not only links to reviews, but reports an overall "score" ("Tomatometer") summarizing critics' ratings of each film.)

But for a useful end table "analog" reference, you won't go wrong with VideoHound, the DVD Guide if you buy DVDs or the Golden Movie Retriever if you don't.

It's a well known problem. You search for something on the internet and you'll get results from the most obscure pages that are irrelevant to your topic. So how do you scrap all the searching and get straight to THE BEST web page for you. Well, 'Virgin's guide to the internet' is easily the BEST book out there for finding the best web pages. It's simple and extremely easy to read format along with numerous catagories to choose from makes this book the ONLY thing you'll ever for the intetnet with the possible exception of a modem (but only just!) I strongly recommmend buying this title

Do not leave home without this book! A must have guide when your cruising the Mid-Atlantic area for the best brewpubs and beer bars.

The editors of the WSJ have done an excellent job of summarizing in a useable format the strengths and weaknesses, as well as technical information on the top 50 business schools in the country (and the 50 runners up.) The beauty of this book over all others is the methodology of asking top corporate recruiters their opinions of the different programs (some of which are eye opening and controversial). This more readily gives someone seeking an MBA the relative value of a specific MBA in the marketplace, not as ranked by some elitist academic survey.

Of course, all these programs are excellent, and I think anyone would find some issue to quibble with in the rankings or synopses, but all told this is an enormously useful and complete source of information. No MBA candidate should be without it.

Very insightful review on what is required to be a master manager in today's global businessphere. Mr. Lessem re-introduces us to the four worlds of management--primal, rational, developmental, metaphysical--and how the four spheres--East, West, North, South-- and their combinations, linking core to periphery via a knowledege spiral. Excellent rendition on where organizations should be to accomplish constant renewal and transformation for survival.

Second edition of this Omnigraphics publication contains almost 13,000 individual web site listings. Full and accurate information onf bona fide organizations with a presence on, and/or doing business on the World Wide Web, including (where possible) full telephone and fax and contact numbers, toll-free numbers, and snail-mailing addresses. All Fortune 500 companies are listed---whether they have a web site or not---and users will find all types of businesses, associations, societies, government agencies (federal, state, regional, city, county, local), educational institutions, embassies, consulates, UN missions and agencies, research centers, and media...among other listings. Organized alphabetically and also by subject classification. A "must" source for anyone doing business---or desiring to do business---on the World Wide Web, researchers, writers, educators, and students. This book is really the best wedding guide around. I saw a lady on the train looking through another magazine and told her she should just buy THE WEDDING DIRECTORY!It is a very resourceful publication. I have used it in planning my sister's wedding and am now planning my own. This is the only publication that offers so many sites and services packed with so much information on unique wedding sites and services.

This is the best guide to Moscow available. The maps are fantastic. It was INDISPENSABLE when I lived there in '94. I have not seen anything that can come close to it on the market. One plus was that it was small and discreet. You did not have to look like an idiot folding and unfolding a huge map. Just glancing at the cover gave you metro information. New guides like the Insight Guide, or the Rough Guide are useless in comparison, they are totally glossy and superficial.

This book is invaluable and fascinating.We have found my husband's grandparents' tiny russian town, - our pronounciation was totally different from the actual name , but the authors had ours listed as well! Highly recommended for anyone interested in the destroyed life of european jewry
