The bible of consumer health information
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-25
As a consumer health librarian I can say that this is the absolute bible when it comes to selecting health-related materials. Not just a list of books, this is a wide-ranging source of well-written, well-considered reviews of almost all types of materials (books, CD-ROMs, databases, pamphlets, magazines/newsletters, Spanish-language materials, and more) for the layperson, plus selected sources written for the health professional that would be helpful in the well-stocked consumer health library. There is an extensive section of reviews of complementary/alternative therapy materials, something the faint-of-heart might not have wanted to tackle, but Rees accomplishes it with aplomb. Conspicuous by its absence is a list of consumer health videos, but this would be a huge task in and of itself!

Rees knows his stuff (more importantly, he has known his stuff over time--this is the 6th edition of this book [2000]) and he doesn't play it safe: many of the books he reviews are concerned with controversial theories or therapies, but he reviews them impartially. Most public libraries, all medical/hospital libraries, and many academic libraries can benefit from owning a copy of this book, for collection development purposes and also for patrons to browse. The interested layperson, either a patient or family member, would do well to consult this book when looking for the best books/other materials on your particular topic.

This is the source that medical librarians turn to when developing consumer health collections. The absolute best starting place for selecting consumer health titles!

There we were, all huddled together, out of the pouring rain, in someone's booth, in Virginia at an outdoor show, going through this little blue book, going over the shows we have been in & others we never were in. We now will do those we never heard of before! Only in this little book are some of the best little shows around & and big ones's too. Wow! Love it! We are all going to order it! Thanks Craft & Art Show Calendar and Rose Brein Finkel.

An easy and enjoyable read that provides a good grounding In hagiography. The conversational style of the text is well-suited for the topic of saints and makes for an enjoyable and informative read. Very well done and a handy reference for guidance in finding saints for special veneration or simply to satisfy your curiosity.

Loaded with interesting facts about patron saints. Who Knew?
Helpful Votes: 95 out of 99 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-13
I've never been especially interested in the lives of Saints per se, or actually never really knew much about them, despite my parochial upbringing. All I knew was that many of them were martyred and had for the most part lived fairly holy lives... and have since become the patron saints of something or other...and I'm using that term losely. We have the patron saint of cooks who was actually grilled to death in a giant waffle iron. Now that's interesting if somewhat morbid reading. There is a patron saint to just about anything you can think of from the mundane to somewhat bizarre, and is a good argument for the saying that truth is stranger that fiction. It also serves as a cross reference to help in locating the patron saint of just about any remedy. Also listed are the patron saints for each day of the year. It's everything you never knew about saints and more...very well written, highly readable and without all the doctrine. It contains just the facts and only the most interesting ones. In closing I would have to say that I was most pleasantly surprised by this very entertaining book and that the author did a good job in presenting the subject matter for the lay reader with that in mind.

It's always hard to figure out which search engine to use when you're trying to find information on the Web. Hock's book does a great job at sorting out the strengths and weaknesses of each of the major search engines, as well as providing easy-to-read documentation of features such as phrase searching and searching for personal names. I especially liked the sections on "What Happens Behind the Scenes" and "Special Options," which show where each search engine excels. Any serious Net.searcher should have this book within arm's reach.

Makes Finding Information Online a Much Easier Task!

Review Date: 1999-12-08
The availability of a lot of information on the Internet has made finding specific information a more difficult task to accomplish. Unless someone knows were to find something online they must make use of existing tools to find it. A number of elaborate search engine tools were created with this one goal in mind.

Randolph Hock has written The Extreme Searcher's Guide to Web Search Engines to provide us with helpful insight into how existing search engines can be put to use to help researchers find specific information online. A number of these search engines have been around for a while and have seen much use, but time, effort, and money can be saved by becoming more familiar with the major ones and using those that will get the job done!

This book covers the operation and use of major search engines such as Alta Vista, Excite, HotBot, Infoseek, Internet Sleuth, Lycos, Northern Light, WebCrawler, Yahoo, and others. Readers will find out that there are not only search engines that search the 'Net, but search engines that search multiple search engines themselves! Some of these are covered in the book as well!

Readers are introduced to each search engine covered in the book. Screen shots, entry fields, and information about special functions and use are provided. They will learn how each search engine operates and how they should be put to the best possible use. They are compared with one another and the author offers his own opinion of the strengths and weaknesses of each one. Readers are left to determine which search engines are best suited for their own particular needs. An accompanying Website provides updated information at their fingertips!

The book is ideally suited for professional researchers, students, businesses, and libraries. It can be read from cover-to-cover or opened up at any particular place as special needs arise. It is thoughtfully written and very readable. It will make finding information online a much easier and more enjoyable task!

Not just for pilots

After reading each chapter of this book, I wanted to visit every place the author described. Kohn is obviously a New Englander and is intimately knowledgeable about places to visit in New England and things to do. For someone who is not familiar with the area that Kohn writes about, the book offers an insiders look at unique B&B's, great restaurants and their specialties, parks to visit and a myraid of other fun things to do while visiting the area. This book is much more than a guide for pilots. Anyone traveling to this area of the United States should read Favorite New England Airports: A Guide to Aviation Activities and Entertainment. It offers one the chance to greatly enhance their vacation to New England!

A Renaissance Pilot Covers New England

Review Date: 2002-03-22
James Kohns' book appeals to me because the author--rather than trying to write a guide that covers every airport, restaurant, and hotel and quickly becomes obsolete--focuses his comments on several activities and places he has personally enjoyed and thinks others will also like.

Kohn loves taking flight to enjoy New England's great outdoors, sports, the arts, culinary adventures, and lovely inns. His enthusiasm is infectious. He covers many places and topics, among them whitewater rafting, outlet shopping, and climbing Mount Katahdin in Maine; skiing, golfing, and boating in Vermont; exploring Nautucket and Martha's Vineyard and historic Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. He notes museums, offers advice on places to eat and stay, and provides the all-important basics of how to get around once you touch down at the airport.

In short, pilots who want to explore more of New England will appreciate the book for its practical advice on flight aspects. Pilots and non-pilots alike will enjoy the unique vantage point this book offers on activities. This is a delightful and practical guide to a varied and interesting part of the world.

This September will mark my 6th visit to the Iberian Peninsula. You can easily outline a wonderful car trip using this book alone. It is very straightforward and very honest and the only guidebook that you will need to purchase. You can write to the Spanish Tourist Office for a wonderful map which will have the location of all the paradores and pousadas clearly indicated. Book and map in hand, and you are halfway there. The Spanish and Portugese people have to be among the most gracious people in the world. Use this book wisely, and seek out the less well known regions of Spain. You won't be disapointed. Viva la Espana!

They've done the research and list many scholorships in an uncluttered format. Scholarships are listed by the geographical location in which the scholarship is to be used. The contact information tends to be out of date, but it is possible to find the current information, albeit with a little work.

Financial Resources for International Study is a must have for anyone wishing to attend school outside of the U.S. Every scholarship and financial aid option imaginable is listed within the book, which if you recieve one of those, could pay for the book itself easily! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who, like me, has to get out and see the world through education but cannot always pay for all of it.

Just got this book. All I can say is that it's great. Gave me lots of ideas for places to take a fishing vacation that I hadn't really considered before. And when they say for ALL budgets they mean it! There are some real bargains in the book as well as some super nice places. They've even listed places you can only hike to or ride a boat to or take a plane.... Highly recommended!

My wife bought my son and I copies for Christmas. It's been an indespenable help! It's easy to locate a place that meets the requirements of those traveling in your party. I've never thought enough of a book to take the time to write a review, but Simpson did his homework so you don't have to. The descriptions listed contained all the info I needed, plus some. I've already made reservations for my spring trip! It's a bed and breakfast so my wife is even looking forward to this trip. TRAVELING FISHERMEN NEED TO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS BOOK BEFORE THEIR NEXT TRIP....
