Insightful business case studies based on Hollywood

Business consultant Philip E. Meza has done his research on the history of entertainment technology and the growing pains that have followed each innovation. Unfortunately, his slightly muddy larger concepts sometimes fail to justify the detailed histories that support them, sometimes making the book feel sort of padded. getAbstract says you need to read it anyway, if you are a content creator or decision maker in the media, entertainment or information industries. Meza provides real value by identifying a pattern in content companies' resistance to the very changes that eventually help them. In two particularly utilitarian appendices, he surveys the technologies that are pressuring media companies and reviews the current state of U.S. copyright law. His analysis of the content industries' lame responses to technological change and his prescriptions for the future are useful and insightful.

COMING ATTRACTIONS? HOLLYWOOD, HIGH TECH AND THE FUTURE OF ENTERTAINMENT instructs media and tech companies to understand convergence, showing how Hollywood and technology can benefit from each other's focus to bolster both the entertainment industry as a whole and high tech interests. Chapters discuss the switch to digital and web formats and how this represents huge potential market opportunities for both entities, exploring the history and development of different systems of entertainment delivery and their competitive options. California libraries both business and public will find COMING ATTRACTIONS an outstanding, specific survey key to understanding long-standing issues, conflicts, and relationships between entertainment, high tech and media industries alike.

While this book helped me think more clearly about what I see in today's headlines, gave me tools for understanding the current convergence and to judge how companies such as Google and Viacom respond. It also helped me think about patterns in other industries where there is resistance to innovation and how early adopters can benefit. I found the history of the industry fascinating as well.

I got this book because I wanted to learn more about the changes I see taking place in entertainment, things like YouTube and watching new TV shows on iPods. The book covered this and a lot more. It provided an eye opening look at similiar intersections btw tech and entertainment in the recent past as well as a look into what the future holds. I don't work in either industry, but I found the book to be well written and easy to read (very entertaining, really!).

An "owner's handbook" for the universe?

Review Date: 2008-05-31
Though first published back in 1915, this comparatively short work has inspired philosophers and thinkers since its first appearance, and has been cited by many as their insight and inspiration. Frederick Bailes, to take just one example, said that the application of Troward's insights enabled him to overcome a supposedly "incurable" disease (diabetes).

What is so important about the Troward insight? Essentially, Troward was a judge who applied rigorous logic and the evaluation of evidence to understand the way the universe came into existence, and how it works. He demonstrates that, as neither matter nor energy could (in themselves) have initiated the design process, there must be a creative inspiration - this may be called God, though Toward prefers "Spirit". A later readership might call it "the cosmos". The name doesn't matter - the principle is that of a guiding and designing intelligence, essential to the creation of a logical universe.

From this, Troward argues, it follows that the process of creation must be one of thought - the universe was created by the application of rational design to the static elements of matter and energy. From this, it follows that we should employ the same design process to achieve our objectives, whatever these may be.

I'm sure that I've not explained this very well, but hope that this will get you thinking. Read this book. Not only can it change lives - better yet, it can show you how, and why, the change process operates.

Still waters run deep...

This book is Multi-layered and fascinating. Heartily recommend The Creative Process to anyone who is willing to reach beyond the race mind and consider freedom, joy, light, life, love, peace, power, truth, and beauty. Try this mindset on--it works!

This book is great. I bought this book as it was recommended by the famous author Ernest Holmes, who also writes on this topic. In fact, Troward's writings influenced Ernest Holmes and the Science of Mind movement. Holmes was able to put Troward's principles to the test and he was able to cure people of illness by mental treatment or what he calls "making a demonstration".

When I bought this book, I thought the early 1900s language was a little hard to read. But one day I was really bored and I read it, and it actually was very inspiring. His ideas and principles he puts forth about Truth, God, Mind, Love, Light, Peace etc, are truly amazing, and they really makes sense! As you read towards the back of the book, more and more wow principles are put forth by Troward. He suggests that most religious people are talking about the eternal heaven to go after this life. Yet he correctly asserts that heaven is a state of consciousness and conditions where we experience Light, Joy, Peace, Abundance etc in our life now. And since heaven is eternal, that means it is past, present and future and forever. Then it must be already here now - unless we do not know how to access that infitine givingness and love of God. We do not need to delay a heaven of joy, love and abundance like most religious teachers claim. And he goes forth to tell you how you can access that, and explains why it is so. And that is how Ernest Holmes could use these principles and treat people to have perfect health and abundance.

Lastly, different from other books which teach about "you must think of the things you want, not what you dont want". Troward goes one step further and teaches a way where you can only think about good things as REALITY.

I found this book via the recommendation in Your Mind Can Heal You by Frederick Bailes. It's astonishing that it was originally published in 1915, because the ideas are quite contemporary. Thomas Troward (1847 - 1916) was an assistant commissioner and later divisional judge in the North Indian Punjab from 1869 until 1896. He wrote several small volumes that have had a profound effect on the development of spiritual metaphysics, in particular that of the New Thought movement, of which the teaching known as Science of Mind is Troward's most direct legacy. Unlike a lot of metaphysical authors who treat the personality/conscious mind as some sort of "necessary evil," Troward believes that the whole purpose of Life & Evolution is the further development of the personality in the self-contemplation of Spirit. His reasoning on the nature of Spirit (perfect Life, Light, Love, Power & Beauty) is very convincing as are all his arguments. I have only read it once but feel that a 2nd and 3rd reading is required to fully comprehend this marvelous and fascinating book.

He'd been unsuccessful at preventing disaster before, and lacks the confidence to risk failure again. But as the animosity of the town stamps its impression, Michael soon comes to understand the danger Marie faces. Then an anonymous call come, warning that he's next. Author Susan Vaughan masterfully creates a fast paced plot in DANGEROUS ATTRACTION that deftly weaves rich characterization with riveting suspense. With remarkable skill, Vaughan keeps the reader guessing as twists and turns lend this romance a roller coaster thrill ride of danger and desire. Tension, both of the physical and of the psychological varieties, never relents, thereby drawing the reader into a world of murder, betrayal and intrigue, as questions of loyalty and truth underscore the vicious circle of peril. A tropical paradise turns deadly

Young Genna Whitworth and Eli Blaylock were told as children that they were wrong for one another. She was from wealth and he a poor Conch boy. Yet their friendship was fast until one violent night of fire and death tore them apart. Seventeen years later they are reunited under quite different circumstances. Genna flees from the unspeakable advances of her cruel brother-in-law only to be shipwrecked and rescued by the man she believd dead. As Genna slowly mends, she and Eli rediscover their past attraction, while he battles against honor in the matter of his fiancee, the daughter of his mentor and benefactor. Author Colleen Easton knows how to tighten the screws of her plot, how to box in her characters until the reader can't figure out how things can possibly work out. No predicable outcomes here, rather there are excellent twists and turns.

Great Characters and a Steamy Plot

Set in the Keys of southern Florida in the years of unrest before the Civil War, Dangerous Attractions is as verdant and steamy as the tropical islands about which it's written. A culture of taboos and prejudices direct the life choices and paths of its exciting and well-written characters.

Eli Blaylock, a Conch boy rescued at twelve after losing his father and brothers in a Seminole attack, strives to become worthy of acceptance, not only by his rescuer, Jeremiah Hardy, but also into the society which shuns his Bahamian bloodlines.

Genna Whitworth is plagued by the guilt of her perceived role in the death of her own father, lost in the same Indian attack. Marred both mentally and physically by the trauma, she has never married and has remained emotionally safe, hidden in a private world of her beloved wildlife drawings. But now, the greed and avarice of a wicked brother-in-law has threatened even that small security.

When a vicious storm and subsequent shipwreck throw Genna back into Eli's arms, the emotions, which boil to the surface every time the two old friends are close, jeopardize the honor and loyalty of both. Not only must this hero and heroine deal with the misconceptions of their shared childhood tragedy, but they must also face their current moral dilemma. Eli cannot go against his own pledge and the wishes of the now dying Jeremiah, a man who not only saved his life, but also educated Eli and helped him to start his own wrecker salvage business. Genna must, in turn, face her own sacrifices to regain her wavering self-respect.

Dangerous Attractions is a well-woven tale, a balance of honor and morality versus the desire for a lifetime of true love. But at what cost?

Colleen Easton has penned a story that tugs at one's heart while pulling the reader along through page after satisfying page. An eclectic and interesting cast of characters, including a foul-mouthed parrot named Heathen, each with their own issues, keeps the pace moving. A great read.

It was a time of racial unrest in Indian Key, Florida as the Seminole Indians, intent upon violence, swept through the settlement with fire and evil intent. Eleven-year-old Genna Whitworth shouldered the responsibility of her father's death that night, accepting the unending blame of her mother and sister. She didn't know her childhood friend Eli Blaylock survived, or that he also blamed her for that night. Years later, fate brings Genna and Eli together again, laying them at cross-purposes and tempting their hearts.

Jerimiah Hardy rescued the boy from a cistern, taking the twelve-year-old home to become part of his family. Eighteen years later Eli captains the wrecker that comes to the aid of a ship off of the Florida Reef. A woman, battered and nearly dead, captures his attention. Long ago he had decided that having answers to old questions would not matter anymore; that answers would only dredge up memories best left undisturbed. But Genna's presence stirs more than old questions for this man bound by honor and loyalty to marry another.

Author Colleen Easton pens an entrancing historical tale in DANGEROUS ATTRACTIONS. Easton's masterful storytelling sweeps readers away into a world by turns romantic and gritty, always compelling. A bird named Heathen, complex loyalties, and unexpected twists keep the plot moving along quickly, pulling the reader into an almost forgotten world torn by racial differences and rewoven by ethics and honor. From the moment their paths cross as adults, Genna and Eli are on a collision course with destiny, forced to deal the repressed secrets of the past and the dangers of the present. Their characters spring vividly alive with rich description and an impressive background. Secondary characters likewise sparkle, from the stolid Jeremiah and his secretive daughter, to Eli's entrancing first mate. DANGEROUS ATTRACTIONS comes very highly recommended.

A seductive story that I highly recommend.

Set in the 1850's of Key West. Genevieve "Genna" Whitworth was from a Boston high class family. She met Eli Blaylock as a child. While her father studied the people and the area of the Indian Keys, Eli and Genna became friends. But a Seminole Indian attack changed it all. Neither knew if the other survived.

Almost twenty years later, Fate put them together again. Genna had been living with her married sister. Her brother-in-law, Professor Theo Drummond, was an author of natural histories. Genna received no credit for her amazing illustrations. She never minded. However, Theo began slipping drugs in her drinks and trying to seduce her. Once he all but succeeded. Genna did the only thing she could think of, she ran. She wanted to reach her brother, Hans. Instead, she ended up shipwrecked and badly wounded. Eli rescued her.

Eli had become a sea captain. His crew was in charge of the salvage operation. He was engaged to Abbie, who was from a prominent family in the area. Abbie took care of Genna as she healed. Eli and Genna still cared for each other and their attraction grew. Yet Eli believed Genna had abandoned him all those years ago and harbored hard feelings. He knew Genna was running from something or someone, but she would not share her fear. She became terrified when she learned Theo was en route to pick her up and take her home. Eli was determined to find out why.

**** That is the main plot. The author, Colleen Easton (a.k.a. Colleen Thompson) keeps the attention of the readers by slowly revealing the horrors of the Seminole attack on that fateful night so long ago. In addition, secondary characters seem to have lives all their own! A few extra plots roll in the background making the suspense build to an even higher pitch.

A seductive story that I highly recommend. This author is a gem! ****

Margolies is a photographer, but he provides not just books of photographs but well-written contemporary history to go with them.

This book is about roadside attractions, some long gone, some still hanging on, and some thriving. It inspired me to spend two weeks driving all over Florida trying to catch some of these places before they vanish forever.

Miniature golf, a favorite subject of the author, gets special coverage.

As a reader I could tell that the author loves the subject. He includes pictures most of the great tourist attractions and many of the not so great ones. This is a fun book to read. Not a heavy piece of reading - but very informative - from several angles - historical, business, and travel. I have read other books by the author and am impressed with all of them. The layout and art direction of the book serves the subject well. I can see this book going into more editions. The size of the book is swell - big enuf for big pictures - small enuf to handle in "tight spots."

I never expected a book written to counselors of women with SSA to be so compelling to a woman who doesn't have this struggle and isn't a counselor. I have been happily married for 40 years and read this book because of my acquaintance with the author. I found myself very moved by the compassion, honesty, and wisdom of Miss Hallman's approach to broken people. One senses a great respect from the author towards her clients and there is no "talking down" to them. All of us are broken in some way and ANYONE who reads this book will be moved by the desire to look inside and find that which makes us broken and then to see that healing and change are possible. I'm asking my husband to read this book as I feel it reaches beyond gender to the heart of us all.

I just received my copy of this beautifully written account of a therapist who speaks candidly about the women whom she counsels with same sex attraction as a part of their lives. All I can say is "WOW"! I am so pleased with her knowledge of this issue and that she speaks from her heart and experience. This is an extremely valuable literary work for anyone dealing with female same sex attraction in their own life or in the lives of people who they come in contact with. You will be very enlightened and given great wisdom from reading this book. It covers the many aspects of female SSA with love and a therapeutic perspective.

I made a brief mention of this book in a review I recently wrote of Anne Paulk's book, "Restoring Sexual Identity." I promised to read this book and comment on it. I have read it and I rate it a valuable resource, full of insight and the author's considerable experience in counseling women struggling with same-sex attraction.

The case studies Hallman cites are very helpful and compelling. She goes farther and gives some very helpful exercises that I have not seen anywhere else. Counselors have needed a resource like this for some time. There are too few who know how to deal with female SSA issues. The vast majority of resources are directed toward male homosexuality issues.

I will be recommending this book to all the women counselors I know, as well as to the president of the American Association of Christian Counselors. It also will be an indispensable tool for those like me who have overcome SSA and wish to help others who are struggling through small recovery group work.

My one concern is with Hallman's decision to continue to work with women who wish to have their same-sex attraction affirmed. While these women are deserving of counsel for other issues, I am not sure Hallman does not send the wrong signal about the destructiveness of their choices. No one can be forced to change, and I agree that all women must be treated with dignity, regardless of their sin struggles. But we are already bombarded with too many mixed messages from the media, gay activists and their medical establishment minions to not be very clear about the consequences of sinful and unhealthy behaviors. It's one thing to judge; it's another to provide wise and truthful counsel that is nourishing to one's soul. The door must be left open, but if someone shuts down the process of repentance and healing, the Christian counselor is left with few options in moving forward. "Faithful are the wounds of a friend." I'm glad my counselor made that quite clear to me years ago.

In her book "The Law of Attraction in Action" Deanna offers a humerus and accessible approach to helping people transform their dreams into a reality. By weaving in aspects of positive psychology (Martin Seligman's work), mind/body medicine (Jon Kabat-Zinn), and areas of neuroscience (Richard Davidson) she grounds the Law of Attraction in multiple areas of scientific research. This approach goes far in setting the tone for the second part of the book where she gives specific advice and exercises for effectively incorporating the Law of Attraction into your life. Are you one of those people who are thinking about living a more spiritual life but do not know how to go about it? Then this book is definitely for you. A person new to the spiritual path as well as a person already well into their journey would benefit from reading this book. The author knows the topic well as she has spent the last thirty years studying the subject.

The author, Chariss K. Walker, truly understands that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. God wants to give us what we want but it is our humanness that often precludes us from asking the right way for something or understanding God s response when it is given. The first section of the book lays the foundation of spirituality by exploring what spiritual laws really are.

The second section of the book delves into the different spiritual laws. These fourteen laws include the laws of oneness, vibration, attraction, action and very importantly the law of forgiveness. It is very important to read and understand all of the laws as they build upon each other.

The third section explores how to put the spiritual laws into practice. This can be done through prayer, meditation, thanksgiving and visualization to name just a few. A combination of these practices will also strengthen what you are looking to accomplish. Chapter Thirty was particularly valuable as it discusses how this information can be beneficial to you.

I really enjoyed every aspect of this book. The author's approach was easy to read and comprehend; it drew me in from the first page to the very end. The quotes and affirmations used were inspiring and relevant to the topic at hand. Make a Joyful Noise" by Chariss K. Walker is an excellent resource for anyone who is on the spiritual path or contemplating it.

An eclectic approach to spiritual wisdom

Chariss Walker's new book, Make a Joyful Noise , is aptly described in the subtitle: Searching for a Spiritual Path in a Material World: A Book of Hope. Ms. Walker's goal is clearly to help individuals sail a straighter course through today's seas of spiritual confusion and improve their lives. While Make a Joyful Noise has a very strong Deist and Christian focus and relies heavily upon biblical wisdom and direction, Walker does make an effort to be as inclusive as possible within those parameters, and stresses at several points in the text the need to respect the faith of others. As it says on the jacket: "Chariss Walker uses liberal Biblical references to explain Spiritual Laws, their relevance in your life and how to put them into practical use without destroying your present convictions." She is also spiritually eclectic in her selection of fine quotes throughout the book, including for example, snippets of Zen Buddhist wisdom, and a quote from the Bhagavad-Gita.

Distilling the wisdom of the ages into an easy to understand self-help book on spiritual growth is an extraordinarily ambitious task, and that makes it interesting to see how she goes about it. And Ms. Walker does take an interesting approach, marshaling her personal beliefs to shape and buttress the text, but also striving to be inclusive and allow for some imaginative flexibility as she strives to create a book which will appeal to those whose faiths may differ subtly or substantially from her own.

She proceeds toward by this goal by identifying herself and her prospective readers as "seekers," and by laying out a series of Spiritual Laws which each seeker is invited to follow. These laws, each encompassing a mini-chapter, include the laws of Oneness, Vibration, Attraction, Polarity, Action, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, Asking and Receiving, Increase, Compensation, Transmutation, Relativity, Reciprocation, and Forgiveness. These laws, she believes, are anchored in science and natural law as well as God's will. The laws are supplemented with examples from real life and a large number of intriguing quotes. After describing the laws and the principles behind them, she provides seekers with a toolkit for moving forward. The tools include: Prayer, Meditation, Thanksgiving, Praise, Affirmations, Visualization, Dreams, Miracles, Light of The World, and Angels.

This book is worth reading just for the rich treasury of quotes it contains. In addition to many passages from the Bible, Ms. Walker cites diverse religious texts as well as a huge array of quotes from an amazing assortment of individuals, including: Aristotle, James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Albert Einstein, Muhammad Ali, Billy Graham and Pliny the Elder. Joyful Noise concludes with two appendices: one containing a glossary of terms and one containing a list of recommended reading. Finally a set of endnotes provides a profusion of web links for those who would like to pursue some of these topics on the internet.

Individuals, especially Christians, interested in seeking a clearer path to spiritual growth are sure to enjoy this thoughtful and serious book.

A prayerful experience!

"What you desire to receive is the very thing you should give away." ~ pg. 111

"Make a Joyful Noise" is an intriguing book that will be appreciated by seekers looking for ways to live a more spiritual life. Chariss K. Walker has studied sacred texts for over thirty years and she presents biblical references to back up all her wonderful insights. She believes that we are divine beings of light having an earthly experience.

On this earth journey there is much to learn and many spiritual laws to take into consideration. Chariss K. Walker presents laws that deal with oneness, vibration, attraction, polarity, action, rhythm, cause and effect, asking and receiving, increase, compensation, transmutation, relativity, reciprocation and forgiveness.

The last third of the book is even more interesting with topics as diverse as dream interpretation and auras. After reading how to see my aura's color I was able to see a light green aura around my fingertips. This section of the book also explores prayer, meditation, praise, thanksgiving, visualizations, miracles and angels.

What I liked most about this book is the way it is written. While reading it is as if you are having a conversation with a trusted friend or advisor. In each chapter you may also discover something about yourself. What are your motivations when you make a request in prayer? I had never thought about the motivation behind the request but now that I understand how to pray more effectively I will definitely use the new information to see my prayers answered in new ways. There is also a great discussion about how your spoken words and thoughts can powerfully affect your life for the better. Your thoughts literally become your reality. This book will not only put you on a more spiritual path, it will help you realize your dreams.

"Make a Joyful Noise" is also filled with inspirational quotes and affirmations. The affirmations are especially helpful to encourage positive results in your life. I wrote out nine of the affirmation that I thought would help me in my life and I intend to read them often. Here is one example: "I now attract whatever is good, lovely, and peaceful in my life."

I have rarely enjoyed a book so much, this book is truly a comfort to the soul. The only disagreement I have with the author is about the existence of hell. She has chosen to ignore those verses in the bible while relying on many other verses to prove her points.

This is a much larger book than its 500+ pages would have you think. It opens your mind to areas you never guessed were there and allows depths of comprehension that have no limit. If this sounds like Zen, it is. It is an examination of Zen by way of wave-particle example so metaphysical and yet so committed to Quantum theory that it more than satisfies the physicist as well as the mystic in a search for their connection. It hits home through exploration of experiences I believe we have all had and never before understood. It's not a quick sell book and if you're not equiped with a probing mind you'll never get through the Foreword. So dig in. The reward is infinite.

This book delivers!

After reading The Secret and several other books of the same genre, I was disappointed and underwhelmed. Wishing it were so won't make it so, neither will becoming a Pollyanna. However I was not deterred in my quest as I throughly believe that each of us has the power "to make it happen". But I felt I had to know the scientific principals behind it in order to inplement it into my life.

This book was recommended to me by someone who bought it from the publisher's site and so I did the same as this was before it was available at Borders. Knowing immediately that it was a life-altering book I held off on writing a review until I had fully digested it and implemented it into my daily life. I was not disappointed, Mr. Donlan is the one who finally "delivers the goods". After several years of "Murphy's Law" being the norm in my life, things are finally "falling into place". And I now live with the certainty that this will continue as I ordain it to be so.

Don't be intimidated by the above "Book Description" as no antecedent knowledge of Physics, Eastern/Western mind-set or Brain Physiology is needed to understand, enjoy and implement the process as set forth by the author. The book is highly approachable as is the author, himself, on his web-site at Ordaining Reality.com.

This book is a no-nonsense documentation of the scientific principles that not only allow you to take power over your own future but are actually waiting for you to take that power.

The only personal agenda I found in this book was the delightful sound of my own personal agenda finally falling into place. I now see myself as the active Protagonist of my own life and future events and so can you.

The author's style is as entertaining as it is enlightening. I couldn't put it down once I got into it. And I chose to buy a second copy rather than part with mine when a friend asked to borrow it. I highly recommend this read to anyone needing to create their own life as they want it to be. And who among us doesn't?

I just finished it. Very good writing style for complex topics as the author presents the complex portions in a layered form and uses italics to give supporting details that most readers will just skip.
This book is just loaded with information about who we are, why we're here, and where we're going (or at least where we could be going). It addresses subjects that I've been thinking about my whole life. I would pass it on, but I want to reread parts of it and really get my money's worth. The last chapter is something that I plan to read every few months to refresh my ability to concentrate on what I want from deep inside me.

I read many books, often several at the same time. I generally read non-fiction. This is the most informative and provocative book I've read in a long time. It gets into so many topics of interest and presents them in understandable language. There were parts I needed to read more than once to fully grasp them, but I think I followed everything, even the sections that the author said were optional. I'm wiser for my effort. The book reinforces a lot of the topics it presents and makes a lot of forward and backward references. That was very helpful.

This was obviously quite an effort to produce, and I think its title betrays its range of value. However, now that I am through with the last Chapter, I shall put it to the test of helping me to shape my future. I am confident that it will and I think others will gain this ability when they read this book.
