A suspenseful delight.Review Date: 2008-08-11
The heroine, Catherine, is told by her guardian uncle that he has spent her dowry left to her by her parents and she must wed the icy-cold Charles, Earl of Calbeck. The reader quickly realizes that Catherine has a rather violent (almost child-like) temper, and that the seemingly frigid earl is strongly attracted to her fire (which matches her red hair). Beyond an initial argument, the two seem to get along pretty well; Charles showers her in presents and treats her like a queen (there is a HOOOT scene where they're both dressed for a dinner party and her blue silk dress gets him going so quickly that they do it on a chair in her bedroom). Gradually, Catherine starts to fall for Charles, but there is the beginnings of a suspenseful sub-plot involving a maniacal murderer running around the neighborhood. Charles goes away on business for a couple of days and right before he returns Catherine realizes she is pregnant and while she is happy, her joy is over-shadowed by the fear that their child will end up like her, alone in the world with only a distant relative to take care of it (her parents both died when she was young). Charles comes home, looking forward to seeing her after being away and finds her crying; when he asks what the matter is, she tells him she's pregnant and he assumes from her tears that she isn't happy about it and doesn't want to carry his child. She is able to convince him otherwise, and he is also able to calm her fears by promising that they will make plans in the off chance that something happens to both of them. Meantime, the suspense picks up, the murderer comes after Catherine, and as she is in danger, they both realize their love for one another when Charles saves her life.
This book has some of the best scenes in it, both steamy sex scenes and just purely romantic scenes. The only thing that puts me off it a little is the subplot with the maniacal killer; if you have ever read Julie Garwood's "Castles," the sub-plot is very similar to that. But over all it's a great story.
Not the strongest, but not the worst, debut I've ever readReview Date: 2005-10-05
But I also had a problem with the fact that the hero basically forces the heroine into marriage, & that he never gives her warning of her uncle's financial difficulties and his theft of her fortune. I'd find that somewhat hard to forgive! When plot devices like these are as weak as day-old tea, it interferes with any enjoyment of the book. So I can't really recommend this one.
I'll take Charles!Review Date: 2005-04-12
Catherine seems to have little choice but to marry Charles, whom she had not previously considered a suitor, and they seem to be ill-matched. But Charles, although stoic, is a caring and sensual man, and Catherine's previously unchecked temper lessens under his loving attentions.
There is a homicidal maniac on the loose and Catherine becomes his target. Despite Charles's attempts to protect her, the killer is wily and determined.
This story is both exciting and romantic. I adored Charles and came to appreciate Catherine, as well as the supporting cast.

Gothic at its bestReview Date: 2002-12-12
The book is not for the reader who prefers mindless cardboard characters and simplestic stories with no depth, but for the reader who enjoys stories that explore the complexities of the human psyche and celebrate the love that grows between a man and a woman.

Met the author in a support group- she is for real!Review Date: 2006-06-17
I remember going to the Love In Action support group over 15 years ago to help with my own lesbianism and having come when Anne was still just an attendee but meeting her as well as a handful of other women who I find still have their testimonies listed whether on Exodus International or Love In Action websites and am so delighted to see them still walking it out after so many years.
Now, would you want to learn from a mechanic who has fixed their own car or from a critic of the mechanic who has never fixed any cars before or ever experienced anyone fixing their car before?
Why not give her book a try? If anyone has hope, she seems to be one of them.
This book is not about her husband, or anyone else's walk, but her own personal one. It might be more reasonable to keep it all separate as that is not what the title and subject matter of her book is about. Thank you and bless you, Anne, for trying to write and get out there some resources/tips that you have learned along the way in your journey out of lesbianism and for being willing to be vulnerable to even write a book on this subject matter.
The 5 star rating (sorry, but they wouldn't let me just not put a rating) is for the exciting thing that God can do with a life that's broken and rebuild it in a lovely way in rebuilding who Anne is and who we each are. There is hope.
Still the Best Resource Out ThereReview Date: 2008-07-16
Frankly, I give a hat tip to any layperson who can write like Anne Paulk does. I am a firm believer in peer support for those desiring to overcome same-sex attraction. The safe, ideal place for this kind of support is within our churches. It is a function of discipleship, although we seem to have forgotten that in our quest for scientific validation of our counseling methods. The Bible validates quite nicely, thank you. Science is God revealed. Compassion is helping others to see Him.
I cannot yet compare this book to Janelle Hallman's "The Heart of Female Same-Sex Attraction," but I do plan to read that one, as well. One thing that disturbs me about Hallman's approach is the appearance (gleaned from articles I have read by her and about her) of affirming women who decide to maintain their lesbian identity. This sounds a bit fishy and unhealthy to me.
As for the gay activists posing as reviewers here who diss Anne merely because she is married to John Paulk and obviously have not read her book ... what childishness! Certainly lends credence to Elizabeth Moberly's classic assertions that homosexuals are stuck in adolescence, developmentally speaking.
Consider the sourceReview Date: 2005-03-14
Don't take my word for it -- ask Wayne Besen, who recounts the incident (and who photographed Paulk at the bar) in his book, "Anything But Straight: Unmasking The Scandals And Lies Behind The Ex-Gay Myth" (ISBN: 1560234466, available on Amazon.com).
"I have never," Besen told the Guardian (UK) in 2004, "met a single person I believe has changed. I've met a few people who've changed their behaviour - but not their orientation. The founder of every single ex-gay ministry has failed. All of them have failed."
By the way, when is somebody going to ask Anne Paulk herself why she and her husband left Love in Action in 1993 to deal with (as one observer noted) "unspecified personal problems"? Let's see how dedicated the Paulks really are to coming "clean" about their personal lives.
It would easy enough to attack this book (and its author) as the worst the Homophobic-Fear-Mongering Movement has to offer -- but that would be far too easy. Instead, I ask _thinking_ people -- Christians, heterosexuals, and misguided self-loathing lesbians and gay men alike -- to use the brains God gave them and judge for themselves the "success" rate of the Paulks and others like them.
And I thought Christians believed that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life -- and that God loves you for exactly who you are... even if you don't have the good sense to love YOURSELF as God intended.
Sadly, that's just lip service for some "Christians."
Restoring HopeReview Date: 2007-01-04
This hope is real!Review Date: 2006-12-01
Anne also does well to provide several different case studies of struggling women. Different women with different stories allows for personal identification with at least one or more! And when you can relate, it makes the hope even more real to you! I would also greatly recommend Jeanette Howard's book - Out of Egypt... an excellent portrait of the development of same-sex attractions, linked with this hope and this freedom!
The world tries to hide the fact that freedom exists and our stories are hidden from the public. Have you ever noticed that the world acknowledges our failures more-so than our successes?! And when humanity is constantly shown only failure, we tend to believe only in failure! Do not fall for it! Hope is real and VERY MUCH ALIVE!!!!!!

"unofficial guidebooks" are last on my list.Review Date: 2008-03-30
The prose is confusing and overwhelming, the maps are difficult to find and sparse (the book offers an entire section of walking tours without highlighting a single route on a map). Additionally, the authors seem to constantly be telling the reader how they're different from other guidebooks, touting themselves as easier to use. The comparisons get old, and lend the unofficial guide a sense of amateurishness.
Extremely disappointed in this book, threw it away upon my arrival for something easier/more useful, with actual maps, and pictures.

In addition, this book assumed that you have some knowledge of how the film industry works, and of the porn industry in particular. If you're looking for porn information and you're starting at "ground zero" you should just surf the internet and educate yourself instead of buying one of the other riduculous books recommended on this site. Yet Another Weak, Mistake Filled Pep Talk from the Professional Speaker CrowdReview Date: 2008-09-10
While Mr. Rich gets the names of these characters right, often, his description of these characters falls wide of the mark.
Mr. Rich is no more guilty of this crime than many of the "Sell-a-book" Pep Talk Professional Speaker Crowd.
Like others, Mr. Rich takes the defined common usages for character words and expands these into a few pages for each.
Because this method lacks any etymologic foundation, description of essential human chararcters becomes muddled, confused and wrong, mostly.
The title of this work misleads.
The work lacks any "How to" instruction. No step-by-step methods get told or explained.
You won't learn how to develop these good characters nor how to interact with others.
You won't find two words in this work that describe what you need to learn to express yourself and how to express yourself under various scenarios.
And after all, self-expression while with others is the essence of "clicking".
David A. Rich earns a "C" for effort and a "C-" for his lack of mastery of the subject matter.
