A big mistake!Review Date: 2007-12-02
I found a major error on page 108, the Pennsylvania Railroad K4 steam engine.
"The K4s gave excellent mainline service on such demanding servcies as the 'Twentieth Century Limited' ..."
Give me a break. That was the New York Central's train between New York and Chicago. The PRR top train was the 'Broadway Limited".
What errors are there in other sections that I don't know about?

Great Northwest and Railroad HistoryReview Date: 2007-03-16
It then goes on to a history lesson about the building of the Great Northern Railroad
and its early years. Next comes a picture of the inauguration of the Empire Builder
and its early service as a heavyweight luxury train. Finally, the book addresses
the post World War 2 streamlined version of the train. There are some colored
pictures of the streamliner and of several color ads touting the luxury features of
the train and the magnificent trip through the Rocky Mountains. I wish the pictures
of the ads were larger, so that I could read the copy without a magnifying glass.
This book gives a good picture of the development of the Northwest and the part
played in this development by Great Northern and the Empire Builder.

Disappointing...Review Date: 2003-02-12
As for content, I found the information new and up-to-date. Many of the photos have been published elsewhere, but others have not. I found the maps mediocre--the legend is elsewhere in the book and not having memorized it the maps were not very beneficial.
This is not one of Middleton's better works (but it is not entirely his fault).

Good book for children, but...Review Date: 2006-05-16
I was disappointed in this book. If you're looking for something with some meat in it, look elsewhere. The really sad part is that some of the best books written on steam locomotives in general and American Railroading in particular are now out of print.
SPLENDID ILLUSTRATIONS AND DIAGRAMSReview Date: 2004-04-06
Geared for young readers age 10 and up our text opens with the beginning of the age of steam. Prior to this the moving of goods was totally dependent upon what a horse, ox or mule could haul. Next we explore the growth of the engines from "Tom Thumbs" to the giant "Big Boy."
Readers learn how a steam locomotive works and then how steam gave way to diesel locomotives.
This was an eventful time in America's history and well worth revisiting or seeing for the first time. The illustrations and diagrams are splendid.
