This is more of a general concept book than a detailed guide. That being said, it does provide some explicit instructions and it could reasonably be expected to take an enthusiast a long way. It is meant as an introduction but many people may find that they don't need anything more complete. The subject matter is pretty simple.

A model railroad needs a good foundation to be reliable. This books explains how several different styles of foundation can be used. It explains the tools needed and gives steps for construction. All that is needed is for the reader to adapt the instructions to his or her own particular situation. The instructions are easy to follow and are accompanied by plenty of diagrams.

This is a beginner book that may be all that is needed for some people.

Cute, Colorful Book - a review of "Blue Train, Green Train"

This Bright-and-Early book does not have an Accelerated Reading designation. And while it is described by the publisher as being intended "for an even lower age group" than "Beginner Books", my own Mom-Guessimate for the reading level would be 2nd Grade. I say this because the vocabulary is quite beyond any 'beginner' I've known. Here's an example from one page near the end:

Up peeps the yellow sun!
Green train Percy now is done.
Home now to the Shed.
"Peep, peep"
The Shed is where
Percy can sleep.

Harder words include: clickety, orange, trikes, shadows, clouds, crates, stack, presents, and thick.

Now while all pages do not have as much text as the example above, the vocabulary is fairly consistent in it's difficulty.

Four Stars ::: This is a very nice book that tells the story of two friends who aren't on the same schedule. Percy is taking the mail at night, and Thomas is making his runs during the day.

For babies and toddlers there is a lot to talk about: colors and shapes, animals and things like eggs, bicycles and wagons. Fairly advanced readers could find this good practice if they are still interested in Thomas and Friends. For everyone else, it is a good Read-aloud. We liked the rhyme and colorful artwork. [No still photos from the television show in this book.]

The book "Thomas and the missing Christmas tree" is about Thomas the Tank Engine he is told to go find a Christmas tree for the train station Thomas goes to find one and it turns into a big disaster. I think the lesson that this book is trying to teach is how to be responsible and how to help out. This book would probably be best for children ages 4 and up because young kids would love the story and they would love the trains in the story. I think the book was great it was fun and exciting and I loved it.

My 2 1/2-year old son fell in love with this book. The flaps pull out not once, but twice on each page to reveal more of the story. Colorful, sturdy pages (but not cardboard). Not a good choice for those under two, in my opinion, simply because of the delicate nature of the flaps. My son destroyed almost every book he got his hands on as a young toddeler, but by 2 1/2 he was able to handle this book without incident.

The pictures are great and the wording is easy and accurate. My son just turned 3 and he enjoys it but we both would have liked more detailed explanations of how the trains work and what the different parts are called. Overall, a good choice for little train-lovers just starting out.

My First Train Book

Review Date: 2000-10-28
I received this book (first edition) for Christmas as a boy, and although at the time I was looking for something more generic regarding railroading, I was pleasantly surprised with it, and over the years it has become one of my favorite train books.

Railroading was probably not the most dangerous of professions or means of transportation, but as the dust jacket attests, it certainly wasn't the safest. I was surprised to learn how often steam locomotives actually blew up, sending giant hulks of boiler and iron hundreds of feet into the air, or literally miles from the scene of the accident. Until new designs in car couplers and car construction were invented, many passenger cars would actually "telescope" into each other when wrecked, with the obvious results of death or maiming of passengers. Factor in things like split rails, bridge wash-outs, incorrectly aligned track, bad weather...there were many factors that could lead to severe accidents on the railroad.

This book provides interesting photos of just about every imaginable type of train accident, some of which are very old. While the text explains the different types of accidents that can befall the railroad, it also provides insight into how the railroads have progressed technologically and the impacts those advances have had on railroad safety.

Overall, the book is a light read for an adult, but it kept me captivated as a young person. The photos are what make the book, and like a moth to a flame, will make you come back again for another look.

This is for smaller children just starting off w/puzzles, but it is hardy and a good book to take places w/the child to entertain him/her. I'd buy it again and recommend it...especially if your kid loves trains like mine do.
