Trains and Railroads Books

A short and warm story about a young girl, Jane, whose greatest thrill of each day is to race out to see the train as it passes near her home. She loves seeing all of the different cars, waving to the engineer, and playing a guessing game about the color of the caboose. She dreams about the train, where it goes, and who else stands around to watch it pass by.

I enjoyed reading this book, it kept my attention, and never got dull or dry. Very well researched. I appreciated the sources she used especially Van Horne's personal letters to his friends, family and business associates.

I feel, however, that the book really should have included more photographs. I would have liked to have seen his artwork, photos of his massive collection, and more photos of his family.

Other than that, is was an excellent job.

Professor Sawodny continues to be the prime source of material on this subject. This is one of several books that he has produced on armoured trains. As always, they are full of details and photographs. German speakers will be familiar with the originals, which were published in that language and until Schiffer started their translation program, were the only source of information. Schiffer is to be commended for undertaking the task of providing this and other German books in the English language, thus enabling them to reach the wider audience that they deserve. The book is excellent value for money and apart from its historical interest, will provide builders of dioramas with valuable information not easily found elsewhere.

Certainly a good book covering a wide variety of disasters in the 20th century. Not all were high in death toll but were high in rolling stock losses or caused major headaches for railroad users. Four types of disasters are mentioned here, Collisions, Natural disasters, Structural failure and human error. Hope you like it!!

I found this to be a good book to have on hand when I go to train shows. It gives you a good idea of the rough value of a piece before you begin to haggle with a dealer.

Greenberg's 2000 edition provides a quick and portable reference for buying, selling or trading Lionel trains. This easy to navigate guide features a concise description of each item by production number, date of manufacture, variations and the suggested fair market value. It has been very helpful in bidding for Lionel toy trains on internet auction sites. A must have book for the serious collector.

The books listings are sorted by state with details categorized as follows: Description, Operating Schedule, Admission/Fare, Locomotives/Rolling Stock, Nearby Attractions/Accomidations, Location/Directions, Site Address, Mailing Address, Phone #, Email and Web URL.

The book appears to be fairly comprehensive in that it lists the more significant rail attractions in a particular state. However, I'm not convinced that it references all attractions. I was hoping that it would provide a more detailed historical perspective, for each entry, but at least the web site URL is provided where more detailed information can be obtained.

Overall, I'm happy with the publication. It is an easy way to pinpoint rail destinations while traveling through different areas of the country. I've already got a few new destinations in mind. Definetely reccomend taking this book on vacation or keeping it in the glove box.
