Trains and Railroads Books

This is our first encounter with the Puzzle Series. My 3.5 year old loves it. It really builds up an awareness to problem-solving and teaches one to pay close attention to detail.
As a parent educator, and former elementary school teacher, I think this book is exciting, with good illustrations, and most importantly gets kids interested in reading...over and over and over in our household.

This book is 215 pages in length. It is a comprehensive history of the Quanah, Acme & Pacific Railway. The author has done a more than wonderful job of presenting the information in a fascinating way. I stayed awake too late on quite a few nights reading this book. The Q. A. & P. was a very small railroad but makes up for its size with loads of history and it's all in this book. My interest in this railroad is due to the fact that it later became part of the St. Louis - San Francisco (Frisco) Railway. If you are a railroad history buff you will love this book. My highest rating!

I found Rail Ventures to be extremely informative and helpful. However I need more copies for myself. Are &th edition copies available anywhere? When is it going to be published again?

This book was originally published in 1913. It is a very high quality picture book. As with other picture books published in the early part of the 1900s, there is a lot of text on each page. The illustrations are just absolutely gorgeous: museum like quality paintings. About every other page is a full color painting with a high level of detail. The other pages are adorned with black line drawings. The book is arranged in chapters. The story is about a brother and a sister who live near a newly constructed train line. The children fall in love with the trains and want to learn all about them. The children get to know the train workers who teach them, in high detail, about the workings of the train. The children go on a train ride in the cab with the engineer, a visit to the roundhouse, seeing a break-down crane train, a visit to the freight yard, and a trip inside a passenger coach. There are similar stories and adventures, which I am not listing here.

This book is very detailed yet held the interest of my train loving 3 year-old. I highly recommend it for all young train lovers. I wish there were more books on the market like this one. After reading this, the modern children's books look like very watered down text with lesser quality illustrations.

Due to the high level of detail, this book ends up being educational in nature, although written as pure storytelling. It is also not at all boring to for the adult to read to children!

August Mencken's The Railroad Passenger Car offers the reader a complete and superbly illustrated history of the railroad passenger car during the first hundred years of its invention and development. This unique and scholarly presentation is based upon meticulous historical research and is enhanced with personal accounts by contemporary passengers, as well as illustrations with period photographs and line drawings. The Railroad Passenger Car is very highly recommended reading for both the railroad buff and students of 19th century railroading history and development, including the sleeping car and dining car.

This is the first work of which I know to look at 19th and 20th century architecture in a broad context, rather than the famous "war of styles." It is common now to speak of 'Victorian architecture' as opposed to 'Modern architecture,' but the idea that Victorian styles had more similarity than difference seems to have been put forward for the first time here. It also hints that the same is true for various flavors of Modernism, and indeed, that the two supposed antitheses are simply positions along a spectrum. This is done through a tightly limited survey of a very specific, though widespread type, the railroad station. If I recall correctly, there are some pictures, but the book is more of interest to historians and architectural theorists than to rail buffs.

This book is great for kids from Ages 1-4. It keeps kidsinterested and helps to promote memorization. I highly recommend thisbook.

I expected a superior book because the Knous's background is so impressive on the subject of railroadiana. But I was surprised to find that it was not only a superior book but also a beautiful book as well. The pictures make identification of valuable objects much easier than with just text alone. And they make the book such a pleasure to browse through. Definitely destined to become the definitive book on the subject. I recommend it highly.

Authors Bezilla and Rudnicki have traced the history of one of Pennsylvania's most important shortlines and written it in an informative, enjoyable text. The 19-mile-long Bellefonte Central was intertwined in a love-hate relationship with the Pennsylvania Railroad; readers will appreciate the "partnership" attitude of the PRR from the eyes of this regional carrier. Thoroughly researched.

I want to do railrway photography and found this book very helpful. The pictures, personal accounts and advice from other photographers stimulate creativety. There is a lot of useful information about general photography and camera selection. The literature and photography are excellent making this a great rail picture book as well for anyone who's not interested in taking pictures.
