I'm really glad I got this little book. I have a train layout but did not have the instruction book, so I had no where to turn to for information. This book solved the problem. I wish that I had it a long time ago. The information is clearly set out and there are many illustrations. For setup, maintenance and routine repairs, I highly recommend this book.

Smoky History

This is a wonderful book combing the early history of Colorado and the narrow gauge and later standard gauge railroads. The railroads were the dominating force of progress in the mountainous terrain, bringing down coal, silver, gold and other minerals, while carrying supplies up to the mines and ranchers.

The author captures the smell and sound of steam engines working the narrrow corridors of the mountains. It is like being in the cab, with the sounds of smoke pouring from the stack, steam gusting, whistle wailing, bell clanging, and fire roaring in the firebox, and the smells of coal and grease and hot metal combined with the lurching and pounding of the engine on the narrow gauge tracks.

The book will appeal to steam fans, rail buffs and history schloars for a look at the "reality of railroading in the West."

Introduction to Hands-On Steam Railroading

This is a reprint of a Colorado and Southern engineman's life story. Although the book is very readable, you won't find much of the "romance of the rails" here - just hard work and men trying to get a job done in often dangerous circumstances.

It's a good introduction to steam-era railroading for those who are too young to remember, and it will revive memories for those who do.

This book is loaded with information about the golden era of passenger trains. Lots of large color photos of the great trains. This is certainly my favorite book about passenger trains!

Beautifully done, a "must" for the railfan

This is a beautiful history of passenger railroads. The photographs are beautiful, but this is far more than a "coffee-table" book--the text is rich, fascinating and well-researched. Many boxes and sidebars add interesting side notes. If there were a college course on "Golden Age of Passenger Trains 101," this would be the textbook. Definitely one of my favorite train books of all time--and I have plenty!

I love that this is the original oldy-timey version of the Thomas stories. My son loves the illustrations. The size is easy to handle. There are about 3-4 stories per book.

These original format books are charming. The stories, while they usually have a moral, are not heavy handed. The art is lovely and appears to be original to the vintage. This series introduces new characters without the rampant commercialism the is so apparent in the more recently written Thomas books. I've read all of these stories many, many times, and they still charm both myself and my son.

A Beautiful Book

This is a beautiful book. It is beautiful to look at, it is beautiful to read. The words have a symbiotic relationship with the illustrations, and the illustrations with the words. Together they tell a story that in lesser hands would be just another one of those "we built a bigger better longer something" book, but in the capable hands of the writer and designer they tell the story of Grand Central Terminal - which is basically a story of engineering and city planning - as if they were witnessing the miracle of birth, which, of course, they were. We gave the book to a ten-year old girl who lives next door. She shyly took it, opened it, looked at it, thanked us, and disappeared with it.

great building; great book

As this interesting new book tells us, there is a lot more to Grand Central Terminal than the present building. The story behind the Terminal is fascinating, and it's told here in a compelling, accessible fashion that both competent young readers and adults can enjoy. Author has a warm, chatty style that works well for the story, which gets complex at times. Book is gorgeous to look at as well--stunning photos, although too bad some are so small. Nice maps, time line, glossary, etc. Overall, extremely informative and highly recommended.

I was born and raised in Abington, PA, I found this book in the local library and have since purchased it. Using actual reports from newpapers along with their rather gruesome sketches, the book is a tomb of true horror stories. For someone interested in the expansive railraod history which resides in southeastern Pennsylavina this book gives the other side of the story. One final comment, to anyone whom is willing, the sites listed in the stories are not hard to find, and are indeed frightening to image what occured so many years ago.

My two toddlers love this colorful rhyming boardbook and its companion masterpiece Hooray For Truckmice. These computer generated illustrations scream with vibrant colors that will inflame the imagination of even the most jaded toddler reader. The simple rhymes are charming. You can't buy a better book for your youngsters for less money than this high quality, small boardbook.

It's simple, but it works

We bought this book for our son when he was about six months old. Ever since, it's a lock to hold his attention. The text is brief with simple rhyming lines. The illustrations are bright and clear, but not too detailed. It doesn't really tell a story. More accurately, it highlights some key elements of train travel (whistles, the dining car, a caboose). It's a cute book, but frankly, I'm not sure I "get" what is so interesting to my son. Regardless, when I'm putting him to bed and we choose a book to read, he will usually reach for this one. And as any parent knows, when you find something that works, don't question it.

A Classic Among Railroad Books

I received this book as a gift from my Late Aunt back in 1968. To this day, I still occasionally get it out to peruse it. The black and white photographs of the freight trains and passenger consists, particularly the mixtures of types of cars and locomotives, all add up to make this book unique among its peers.

One of My First Train Books, and the Best

At 38 years of age, I don't feel I'm old enough to say things like "they just don't make 'em like they used to," but I'll say that about this book.

This was the second train book I got as a young boy, after a Christmas present book on train wrecks. I've bought quite a few others over the years, but this one remains supreme for me, I guess because you just can't find what lies between its pages in real life anymore.

All black and white photography, the images in this book are exceptional, not because most of them are the good ol' standard 3/4 shot, but because they capture an age, a time and a grace that seems almost haunting today. Some of the photography from the west screams out a loneliness that only a skilled and experienced photographer can achieve.

The text also provides a desirable companion to the photography, explaining the location, the railroad, or the activity in a way that truly complements the imagery.

Once I pick up the book, I find it hard to put down until I've gone through the entire thing cover to cover, just one more time. I don't know if this book will ever be in reprint, but if you can get ahold of it, snap it up. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Being the grandson of a former superintendant of the Illinois Central Railroad, this book brought back some great memories and solidified some of the stories my grandfather had told me growing up about the IC. Great pitures too! If you are a rail fan, I strongly recommend this book! A tribute to a great road still running to this day via the Canadian National.

A Railroad Through the Center of the Country

Review Date: 2007-02-09
The Illinois Central was another of America's premeir railroads that helped to develop the contry and which now is no more. From its start in 1838 (with 24 miles of track) it grew to over 6,500 miles. Alas, in 1999 it passed into the hands of the Canadial National.

This is a colorful history of the Illinois Central from its early day through its acquisition. It is profusely illustrated, with a lot of color pictures. The text that accompanies the pictures gives an accurate telling of the story of the line and its operation down through the years.

The IC grew by acquiring other lines as well as by expanding its own tract into new areas. It remained, however a north-wouth line with its solid anchors in Chicago and New Orleans. It grew west to meet with the Union Pacific in Omaha. It grew to the south east, eventually connecting to Birmingham and eventually Miami.

Only in the last couple of pages in the book is the Canadian National merger. It has become a major railroad, from the original IC trackage from Chicago to New Orleans and CN all across Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific. But alas, it's under the CN name, not the IC.
