Baseball needs Marty Appel

Review Date: 2003-03-10
As a Red Sox fan, I was ready to read this and get whacked in the face with the hubris usually shown by anything Yankee. I was surprised by the balance shown. Marty Appel knows more about baseball than a lot of people running the game now. He was born about 30 years too late as people like Epsteil, Beane and Riccardi get to run ballclubs, while Mr. Appel 30 years ago had to come up through the ranks with Steinbrenner's Yankees no less. Mr. Appel also wrote an excellent biography on one of the first superstarts of baseball back in the 1800's--King Kelly. I recommend both books highly.

A smart, sensitive memoir

Review Date: 2003-07-21
Marty Appel served in the Bronx Bombers' public-relations office for nearly nine years, and was the PR director during the tumultuous early George Steinbrenner years (from 1974 to 1977). Appel's "Now Pitching For the Yankees" recalls the turmoil of that period -- and Appel's ability to function under pressure --with wit, a keen eye for detail and sensitivity.

None of the long hours Appel spent at the ballpark, the turmoil he witnessed, or the high-pressure tactics of owner Steinbrenner have dimmed his appreciation for his colleagues and bosses. It comes through in the pages of this warm, often touching memoir.

The boldface names are there -- including Steinbrenner, Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, Joe DiMaggio and Reggie Jackson -- along with less-famous but pivotal Yankee characters like clubhouse man Pete Sheehy, team execs Michael Burke and Gabe Paul, and Appel's mentor in public relations, Bob Fishel. (It even mentions the writers: Appel's anecdote about one scribe's losing battle with bladder control in Boston is priceless.)

Appel also reflects on his vibrant post-Yankees career, including a bittersweet period with the Atlanta Olympics and a still-thriving stint as a baseball author (subjects include early baseball star King Kelly, former Commissioner Bowie Kuhn and former Yankee captain Thurman Munson).

"Now Pitching for the Yankees" is a good find for anyone who loves baseball, cherishes its history and appreciates the people behind the scenes who make it happen.

The Other Side of the '70s Yankees

Review Date: 2003-06-12
Only if you really know your New York sports would you realize that Marty Appel's in a much more unique position to write a tell-all book about the 1970s Yankees than many other athletes. During his progression over 10 years from Yankees' fan-mail gopher during the Horace Clarke years, to PR director during the 1976 World Series, Appel had once-in-a-lifetime encounters (with the likes of Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Mike Burke, Gabe Paul, George Steinbrenner and ... Oscar Gamble) every single day.

"Now Pitching...", finally out in paperback, shows Appel's origins as a Yankees fan when everyone else was rooting for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and how he turned his love for the game into a career (when everyone else was watching the NFL). Most of the book covers the Yankees from 1968 to 1976, Appel's reign. Although many of the stories are familiar to baseball readers from what seems like 100 other books, only Appel is giving you the inside view. Nowhere else will you get such insider detail about Oscar Gamble's infamous haircut, Sparky Lyle's theme music, or George Steinbrenner's management style.

The book flags a little -- only a little -- when Appel leaves the Yankees and makes his mark in other ventures, such as team tennis and local NYC broadcasting. The most interesting part focusses on Appel's brief fish-out-of-water turn with the 1996 Atlanta Olympics organizers.

Marty Appel's been a very lucky guy -- who else gets to be friends with both Mickey Mantle and Billie Jean King? "Now Pitching for the Yankees" is several cuts above your standard baseball autobiography.

If I may add another book to the list. The best baseball book that I've read this calendar year is Marty Appel's Now Pitching for the Yankees. Marty worked in the Yankees' public relations department from 1968 to 1977, and shares loads of funny and insightful stories about the CBS Yankees and the Yankees of the Steinbrenner Era. The book is well-written, flows smoothly, and strikes me as honest without "hatcheting" people in and around baseball. I'd recommend the book to both Yankee and non-Yankee fans.

A challenging Devotional

I ordered this book from Focus on the Family and began it in 2007. Every day challenged me to pursue Christian living on a higher level. Some days gave me historical glimpses that contradicted the teachings that have been politically taught in schools. There were a couple of instances wherein ancient Hebrew dates may have been presumed rather than known for certain but all in all I highly recommend it to Christians who are determined to know the truth.

The One Year Christian History is not an exhaustive "greatest hits" of Christian History nor is it intended to be. What it is is a book that offers bite-sized glimpses into the people and events that make up the rich history of the Christian faith. Although I would not recommend this book for anyone looking for an in depth daily devotion, I would recommend it for anyone who wants an interesting book laid out in an easy to read format for daily reading.

"The One Year Christian History" presents 365 stories of importance to Christians down through the ages. They range from the Christ's Passion in 33 A.D. to the stories of reformers, missionaries, soldiers, pacifists, hymn writers, martyrs, and others. The list covers topics as varried as pacifist Anabaptists who died for their faith to the conversion of Mitsuo Fuchida (see the book "From Pearl Harbor to Golgotha") to the inspiringly sad letter a martyred missionary wrote to her family during the Boxer Rebellion. People as diverse as G.F. Handle, William Wilberforce, Billy Graham, and Gladys Alyward appear in the book. While not perfect and leaving out many important Christians and events, I recommend this volume as an interesting and fascinating roll through events in Christian (especially Protestant) history.

This marvelous book came into my life almost twenty years ago and remains my favorite book to this day. I have reread many sections many times, and even with the advances in science that have arisen since the publication of this book, it remains deeply informative and philosophically rewarding. For all those who seek to investigate life on earth from its many facets, this is a book to treasure. I only wish Guy Murchie had lived long enough for me to thank him personally!

Murchie's grasp of the topics and his fluid writing make this an enjoable adventure into our world and ourselves. A little science, a little philosophy come together to help the reader evaluate his/her place in the cosmos.

A unification theory of mystery & existence . . .

Review Date: 2007-04-29
This book is a lyrical synthesis of science, philosophy, and religious traditions that could only be authored by a visionary & poetic personality of the highest caliber. Guy Murchie spent seventeen years pulling this 650 page book together; and the labor of love & dedication really shows through the entire text - his erudition is vast, yet completely accessible.

The Seven Mysteries of Life is structured as a triad: Body, Mind, and the Seven Mysteries. In this non-linear exploration of the fabric of existence, Murchie weaves and interconnects the evolutionary immensity of the universe such that, in the concluding chapter, the purpose of our lives on this earth is convincingly described as a soul-school (a spiritual boot camp I suppose).

Not only does Murchie elaborate on our accumulated knowledge of life, world, and universe; he crystallizes it all into little gems of wisdom. This book might be looked at as if it were a unification theory of mystery and existence; its incredibly comprehensive scope will certainly alter the way you look at the reasons for your existence.

Infinite thanks to Guy Murchie for this vastly generous labor of a lifetime . . .

I searched for a book like this one day, and on that day, the first day found this book. And I dont think I could have found a better book in years of searching. Fate brought this book to me.

This book explains the physical and spiritual worlds together as a flowing entity. I have never read a more enticing book about scientific explaination mixed with spiritual exploration.

My life was changed by this book, and I am more than happy by what I learned reading it. The things I'd like to say about this book can not all be described in one review.

My son is a philosophy student at Duke and insisted I read this book. Of course, I resisted diving into a 650 page book, but I have to admit that it was facinating.

As a former science student (zoology and dentistry), we often do a little "recreational arguing," but this book really ties alot of things together.

No, it won't answer all of lifes questions, but it sure will make you think about a lot of coincidences.

Skip around, read the sections that interest you, go back to some chapters.

Great, great book.

Sometimes I think the rarest book of all is any good book on musical instruments. The market is FULL of make-a-quick-buck enthusiast books with poor content, bad writing, and indifferent quality. This one is a refreshing exception. It's a sweeping survey of the strat's history, but it's a good one, is very readable, and the pictures are excellent. I have to agree with another reviewer, though, that the accompanying CD is forgettable. It doesn't detract from the book itself, however. Well worth your while.

The Stratocaster Chronicles: Celebrating 50 Years of the Fender Strat

I ordered this book for my son-in-law. He is a working musician, the owner of 30+ guitars, and the Strat is his favorite guitar (he owns several). The book arrived when promised and in perfect condition.
Having been a guitarist in my own younger life I perused the book before wrapping and mailing it. It's a stunning beautiful look at the iconic guitar of a generation, and one which continues to stun us with the purity of its sound and the simple beauty of its shape.

What is it about this book? I too read Tryst as a teenager and could not forget the book. It has taken me 20+ years but I've managed to acquire all of Elswyth Thane's novels. I have a large library but Tryst and the Williamsburg books remain solid favorites (although one does have to ignore some pretty dated language on the subject of race in the Williamsburg books). If you loved this book and haven't read any other Thane titles, give them a try -- The Williamsburg books are a singularly lovely way to learn American history!

Tryst

I really was being to think that I was the only one who had read and been haunted by this book. I, like many of the other reviewers, read Tryst in my teens and it has remained in my memory for over 40 years. One of the only other books to stay with me in this way is Precious Bane by Mary Webb; which was also written in the 1st half of the 20th century. Both are stories that touch your heart and come alive in your imagination.

This book should never go out of print.......

Of the thousands of books I've read through the years I really only remembered this one with such a desire to READ IT AGAIN. The first read was from the library. I couldn't remember the title or author. I've watched used books for years without success. Thanks to amazon and their search category!! I was able to find it under "ghost, Hilary". This has been one of my favorite books for over 50 yrs. Everytime I have loaned it to family or friends it never comes back. They love it also. It is such a good story. Sabrina is very believeable although many young people today might find it hard to believe that young girls were like that at one time. Hilary has always been my ideal of a romantic man. How they fall in love and how things are "set straight" for them is a great story. I have read this book once a year for almost all the years since I first read it and it never fails to make me cry at the end. With happiness I might add! I recommend it for any romantic and for all young girls.

The only short side is that it only produces info for on tape or DVD. Other than that it is a gem. When ever you don't remember an actors name, find the movie or the movie you remember them in and your there.

The bones critic of the film (ergo hound) is very good, a real persons review of the film.

Look for info by genre, title, actor or whatever.

What was Bogart's final film? What was Lizabeth Scott's first film? How many movies did Gregory Peck make? How many movies did Raoul Walsh direct? When did John Wayne die? And what was Vincente Minnelli's final film? Answers below! All this and considerably more movie information is included in the veritable encyclopedia "Golden Movie Retriever". There are fully 929 pages of movie synopses and ratings. Also included are indices on movie writers, cinematographers, composers and categories -how many Zorro movies are there? (13!). There are over 30 pages of major awards- and even a section on alternate titles! Apparently, "Summer Stock" may also called "If You Feel Like Singing"! It could easily take a lifetime to mine the nuggets here. The only possible weakness to GMR is the paper cover, which should be well worn very quickly. Answers to the questions above are: "The Harder They Fall" (1956); "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" (1946); 49 (count `em!); 43; 1979 and "A Matter of Time" (1976). What's not to like? There is absolutely nothing for a movie fan to ponder here. Hit hat "Add to Cart" button now!

I have read many books about my [our] war in Viet-Nam, actually I have a library of them, almost 100. Kregg Jorgenson goes beyond the pale, he transports the reader to a part of american history that many have forgotten , but it is essential that we never forget because history doth repeat itself [think Iraq]. Acceptable Loss,Very Crazy G.I.[a famous expression used by Vietnamese kids in addressing us],MIA RESCUE, and finally LRRP COMPANY COMMAND, all are explosive works by a great American. On a personal note, i contacted this gentleman about a book I was writing about R.V.N. and our current war in IRAQ, and once we finished our viet nam discussion, he was very helpful and spent a long time in giving me insight into a first book. I might also add here that his wife was equally helpful and supportive. The one great thing about our war, is that it brought a lot of us Vets together,as shared experiences, and a public that disdained us [then] made for a special comraderie. thanks Kregg, without you my "optional Wars" would not have been printed.Semper Fi.

Jorgenson's writing style grabs you and puts you in the drivers seat as a Ranger in the infrantry, through the heat, humid and rain drenched jungle of Vietnam. Jorgenson has a very unique way of pulling you into the action that gets your blood pumping, ears ringing, and sweat dripping before you realize that your safe at home sitting on the couch reading. The book is hard to put down, your pulled into the relationships that Jorgenson had with his teammates as if they were your own; you feel as if your part of the team, living through the same experiences. And when your done with the book, you feel the same losses, like when a dear friend moves across the country, one that you won't ever see again, its hard to say goodby. Thank you, Kregg Jorgenson for letting me be part of your team!

I have been reading war stories since I was 12 years old (non fiction). My reading has covered all American Wars from the Civil War to Viet Nam. I have a collection of aroud 300 that I kept. This book is at the top of the list on Viet Nam and very high on all war books. The author tells it like it is . Most books on Viet Nam are about the marines with a lot of propaganda about the good old corps. The author tells of all the sensations he goes through, being afraid, the terror of being wounded. the allmost disreguard of the top brass. Should be read by all

This has been one of the few excellent books i have ever read. It is actually real, it really happened, so it makes you feel as if this was happining before your eyes. It was sad, and well written. i actually heard David Faber, the author of this book, speak. He was an incredibly powerful speaker, and his book places you in his position, just as his speech does.

David faber visited our high school last week, and had told us about his horrific ordeal during the holocaust. And I was utmost touched and embraced him. I could see those fear he told us in his eyes. And some of us left the auditorium in tears. I recommend this to anyone, because there is a dark side of humanity we taken for granted, and people had suffered more than anyone who had to go through.

Incredibly unimagionable boy's triumph against odds

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Faber as he spoke at the middle school I attended when I was in 7th grade. He spoke to us about his experiences and encounters during the Holocaust that took part in Europe during WWII. Our history teacher read us "Because of Romek" as it was part of our curriculm. I have not been the same since. This is an incredible account of what he went through in keeping of his promise to his mother to stay alive. I would recommend this to a more mature audience being that it does have some parts that are somewhat rough to handle...or so were for myself but overall is an incredible read...as he takes you through his experiences.

One of the best books!!!

This book explains how David's encounter with the Holocaust and yet his story is sad but a good book to read. This is one of the best holocaust memoir I've read! I highly recommended. When I was starting to read the book, I couldnt but the book down...( I ended up finishing the book in 2 days!). I loved it and highly respect the holocaust survivors and of course, David Faber.

A haunting tale that will leave you thinking long after...

Had I thought it was fiction, I would have thought the author went over the top with this farfetched tale. To know that it is authentic is horrifying and at the same time captivating. If you are into the holocaust, then you will find this book absolutely fascinating; and if you aren't a history buff I recommend this book as enlightenment. My utmost respect to anyone that has been through this nightmare. And David Faber my deepest gratitude for having written this book.
