An Enjoyable Look Back at the Dawn of the Jet AgeReview Date: 2007-02-20
The photos are generally of good quality and well reproduced. The short captions are entertaining, even if they do not have a great deal of substance. What makes this book worth the money is that it offers a seldom seen glimpse to the late 1950s and early 1960s, one rarely seen in such a high-quality format.

A magnificent man and his flying machinesReview Date: 2002-12-25
All of us can recall a near miss, perhaps behind the wheel of a speeding car or even at the controls of a troubled airplane. But Bob Rahn, as a WW II Spitfire pilot and an experimental aircraft test pilot at the dawn of the jet age has slipped through death's grasp at what can only be called a miraculous rate.
Take just the year 1946: "I had crash landed a P-47 in the trees in Ohio, bellied in a Skyraider at Patuxent River, dead-sticked an AD into LAX and had two petrifying bailouts..."
Jump to the 50's and we find Bob at the stick of some of the hottest new jets under development at Douglas Aircraft. At that time supersonic flight was full of untested theory and very little practical knowledge. Needless to say Mr. Rahn had some very interesting flights (and luckily lived to tell of them).
This autobiography is however more than simply flying adventures. We meet many of the pilots and engineeers who were there at the transition from piston power to jet speed. You'll also find dozens of photos illustrating the people and planes who have figured in Bob's tale.
If you love airplanes and admire the people who fly them pick up Tempting fate and be prepared for a wild ride.

A Stirring Book for All Audiences!!Review Date: 2008-03-24
Perhaps not so good for children--lovely art and poetryReview Date: 2006-02-17
Unfortunately, this book is a bit of a "tweener." It's art and words are best suited to a more mature audience (9-adult), but it's format and theme is for smaller children.
The topic is decidedly urban--the photos were taken in Brooklyn and Harlem. Thus, I'd recommend this book more to inner city kids--kids who live in an environment with grafitti and chainlink fences, concrete and brownstone. I might also recommend this book for older kids who are slow-readers.
In short, the book generally misses its mark, but I enjoyed it for myself.

Cat in the cityReview Date: 2002-05-23
The words and images of the book may appeal to some, but could leave others wondering. Children, and teachers, who have never lived in the city, may not be familiar with housing projects or playground cages. The book may help others to understand how city-life is different, but at the same time, it may drive a wedge between them. I did not see how this book would help people to integrate these societies in any way. If anything, it just showed what the differences between urban and rural or suburban living are without attempting to show any similarities between the areas.
Why 3 stars?:
The illustrations were interesting and the poem well written. However, this book, when compared with other children's literature on the market, simply does not stand up to its competition. It has a target audience and I don't feel that it would really apply to students who were not in an inner-city school. Therefore it loses appeal for me as a teacher.

Ok book but there are better ones out there.Review Date: 2007-04-22
On a plus side there are some nice driving impressions that point out how the different series roadsters compare to each other.
While it is not the weakest Mercedes SL book, my advice is if you really want it find a inexpensive used copy. If you want a super Mercedes SL book buy a copy of Mercedes SL Series: The Complete Story (Crowood Autoclassic) It is possibly the best book on these cars out there.

Worst Review Guide Ever!Review Date: 2003-02-14
There is a known problem with the software, and there is no patch or support. You cannot use the practice tests, unless you are inclined to look up the answers for each of the 3 tests, at 300 questions per test.
When I called Prentice Hall, they basically said they were sorry, and hung up.

You CAN purchase the hard copy edition of this, if you haven't already. The ISBN is 1401874126. You can get it used on Amazon or you can call Chilton and purchase it for $169.00 new. You can probably return the CD to Chilton if you haven't opened it yet.
Best of luck.

Rather Low On Liberator Content For A Liberator BookReview Date: 2004-04-18
However, the one thing the book rather skimps on is, uh, the Liberator. After 20 pages of covering what most people think of when they think Liberator (bomber, twin tails, built in really large numbers) it wanders off to spend almost as many pages on the single-tail YB-24N (number built - seven) then goes on to cover the use of B-24s in refuellling trials, spends the best part of thirty pages on the C-87 cargo model, and finishes off on the Privateer. The color section is split roughly 50/50 between the Liberator and other versions, although about 75% of the pictures of wartime B-24s seem to have been included because of their typically curvaceous noseart.
Don't get me wrong, this is a well-written book that gives the impression of being solidly researched. It's probably quite a nice supplement to the library of someone who has a collection of B-24 books. However, unlike most of the other titles in the Warbirdtech series, which actually cover the aircraft specified in their title, you get the impression here that somehow the main section of the book is missing and has been replaced with a quick filler chapter instead.
So...if you're looking for a good history of the B-24 this *isn't* the book for you. If you've already got a good history of the B-24, and want to know more than you ever thought possible about the YB-24N or the seating arrangements in the C-87, this is the book for you.
In the end I give it three stars - the writing and density of content is up to the usual standards of the Warbirdtech series, which'd earn it four, but the title's pretty misleading given the actual content and the fact that the Warbirdtech books often represent the start of somebody's library on a plane, not a late addition. That'd normally earn it a one or a two. So I've compromised, and settled on giving it three stars. That may be a bit generous, even.
Definitely a case where skimming the book before buying would have been a good idea. Caveat emptor, and so forth.
