Tillman's telling of the Marianas Turkey Shoot is a great starting point for those not familiar with the WWII Marianas Campaign. There are ample photographs of the various planes involve in the greatest aerial battle of WW II. Though, the book is a little bear in text and details - mainly relying upon oral accounts from pilots involve in the Marianas Turkey Shoot - it is serves as a starting point for those who wish to read and familiarize themselves with one of the greatest battles of WW II.

Amazon.com has several books, which cover the Marianas Turkey Shoot as well as the Battle of Saipan, and the entire Marianas Campaign. Among these highly recommended books are: Saipan: The Beginning of the End by Carl W. Hoffman and Oba: The Last Samurai, Saipan 1944-1945 by Don Jones.

An Enjoyable Look Back at the Dawn of the Jet Age
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-20
Skyliners takes us across North America, from sea to shining sea, and presents the dawn of the Jet Age in all its glory. Each stop offers an amazing variety of late piston and turboprop and early jet passenger aircraft, ranging from the familiar Boeing 707 and DC-8 to more obscure birds. Those of us who had the good fortune to have witnessed this interesting era in civil aviation will remember with great fondness those United Jet Mailiners, Eastern Golden Falcon Jets, and Delta and American Airlines Flagships and Astrojets.

The photos are generally of good quality and well reproduced. The short captions are entertaining, even if they do not have a great deal of substance. What makes this book worth the money is that it offers a seldom seen glimpse to the late 1950s and early 1960s, one rarely seen in such a high-quality format.

A magnificent man and his flying machines

Bob Rahn is the lukiest man alive!

All of us can recall a near miss, perhaps behind the wheel of a speeding car or even at the controls of a troubled airplane. But Bob Rahn, as a WW II Spitfire pilot and an experimental aircraft test pilot at the dawn of the jet age has slipped through death's grasp at what can only be called a miraculous rate.

Take just the year 1946: "I had crash landed a P-47 in the trees in Ohio, bellied in a Skyraider at Patuxent River, dead-sticked an AD into LAX and had two petrifying bailouts..."
Jump to the 50's and we find Bob at the stick of some of the hottest new jets under development at Douglas Aircraft. At that time supersonic flight was full of untested theory and very little practical knowledge. Needless to say Mr. Rahn had some very interesting flights (and luckily lived to tell of them).

This autobiography is however more than simply flying adventures. We meet many of the pilots and engineeers who were there at the transition from piston power to jet speed. You'll also find dozens of photos illustrating the people and planes who have figured in Bob's tale.

If you love airplanes and admire the people who fly them pick up Tempting fate and be prepared for a wild ride.

A Stirring Book for All Audiences!!

I found this book on clearance at a local teacher's store; when I picked it up and skimmed it, I was blown away by the unique illustrations and the beautiful poem. As a teacher I absolutely believe this book is appropriate for all audiences, all ages, anywhere-- Just as the front cover states, "Black Cat's rhythmic poetry and bold collage art will stimulate readers of all ages to explore their own feelings about identity, beauty, and home." This is not a book exclusively for "advanced readers" or "older readers"; this book will attract even the younger reader's attention. Stories of identity, beauty, and home are universal and even applicable to "middle America".

Perhaps not so good for children--lovely art and poetry

The art and poetic phrases are magic to an adult. It's a lovely book and the art is moving. The poetic phrases captivate the mature mind.

Unfortunately, this book is a bit of a "tweener." It's art and words are best suited to a more mature audience (9-adult), but it's format and theme is for smaller children.

The topic is decidedly urban--the photos were taken in Brooklyn and Harlem. Thus, I'd recommend this book more to inner city kids--kids who live in an environment with grafitti and chainlink fences, concrete and brownstone. I might also recommend this book for older kids who are slow-readers.

In short, the book generally misses its mark, but I enjoyed it for myself.

Many of the words and ideas much too old for a third grader from the midwestern area of the United States. I would call this a poor book for all but the most advanced. The pictures are nice.

Cat in the city
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-23
This book follows a black cat on his way throughout a city. The book is dedicated to all children of the city. The format is appealing and interesting, especially the artwork which was created by using pastels and collage techniques over actual photographs of Harlem and Brooklyn, New York. The text is a poem that describes the cat's journey. So many books today are set in a middle-class neighborhood; this one shows images of more diverse settings that are most likely from a lower socio-economic class. Some slang words are used as well. For instance, "tag" is a term for graffiti gang symbols, and "projects" when speaking of housing projects and "bodega" are all words that appear.

The words and images of the book may appeal to some, but could leave others wondering. Children, and teachers, who have never lived in the city, may not be familiar with housing projects or playground cages. The book may help others to understand how city-life is different, but at the same time, it may drive a wedge between them. I did not see how this book would help people to integrate these societies in any way. If anything, it just showed what the differences between urban and rural or suburban living are without attempting to show any similarities between the areas.

Why 3 stars?:
The illustrations were interesting and the poem well written. However, this book, when compared with other children's literature on the market, simply does not stand up to its competition. It has a target audience and I don't feel that it would really apply to students who were not in an inner-city school. Therefore it loses appeal for me as a teacher.

Great book for ALL kids

We checked this book out at the library for my 2 year old son who loves cats and at first read, I was blown away by the incredible artwork and the jazzy text. Although the book is intended for slightly older kids, my son enjoyed it the more we read it and loves to point out where the cat is in each picture. I really appreciated the way that my son is able to see another way of life in America, that is the "urban life," and to see it through the positive lense of this lovable cat. We need more authors to celebrate and make positive the experience of kids growing up in the city which also helps suburban kids (and parents) to see another way of life. Isn't that what Sesame Street was all about? GET this book, it's truly an excellent piece of children's literature!

I bought this book to complete a collection of Mercedes SL books. I read th e reviews of it and bought it as a result. I have found it to be one of the less valuable SL books with mediocre photography, a fair amount of mis-information and lacking some real writing on the experience of owning these cars. Each has a terrific history and there really isn't that much on their development history. I write for an automotive magazine and hate inaccuracies in facts about automobiles such as saying that the R107 cars had a leather dash. They never did. In addition, many of the cars used as picture cars are equipped with aftermarket wheels and accessories. That also does not to me make it a true color History. If it were the cars would be as they came from the factory. There are enough of these cars out there to find picture cars that are in stock condition.
On a plus side there are some nice driving impressions that point out how the different series roadsters compare to each other.
While it is not the weakest Mercedes SL book, my advice is if you really want it find a inexpensive used copy. If you want a super Mercedes SL book buy a copy of Mercedes SL Series: The Complete Story (Crowood Autoclassic) It is possibly the best book on these cars out there.

For the price of this book, it is an excellent value. Lots of information thru-out the years of the 300SL. However, not much description about the changes from year to year.

The pressman let us down... Half of the photos in the book are too blue. I would expect a color history to have GOOD color. The other half of the pages are the over-saturated lack of contrast that comes from economy printing processes but at least the color balance on them is good. The history part of the book is good. As an owner of a 280SL, I was disappointed in the quality of the printing, but not the content...

Good book for SL lovers. Many color photographs with few black and white. It starts from 1952, and includes the fabulous '54 gullwings, and continues to the newest and smaller SLK. Great text on the changes of each model year including the thoughts of people who actually designed and built these automobiles. Definitely a book for those who appreciate automobiles "engineered like no other car in the world."

This book is 88% the pre 1990 body style SLs. If you are looking for a late model SL and need a guide to help look elsewhere. Good if you are looking to buy an older model.

I bought this book and while it looks nice sitting on a bookshelf, the information inside was not helpful at all. If you are looking for more than just a company name and address, don't waste your time. My local phone book had more entries for wholesalers in my local area than this book had for the whole United States. You will be better off searching trade magazines and trade related websites for information. I was so disappointed, I returned it for a refund.

I think there needs to be a book that explains why the answer is that answer to go with this book. This book just has answers and questions in it. Great if you want to test your knowledge on it but not if you need a study guide. There isn't a study guide that i have found to go with this book yet if you have let me know..........

The CD-Rom that contains the extra tests does not work.

There is a known problem with the software, and there is no patch or support. You cannot use the practice tests, unless you are inclined to look up the answers for each of the 3 tests, at 300 questions per test.

When I called Prentice Hall, they basically said they were sorry, and hung up.

I got a 729 (98%) on the CMA and I had a student that studied only from this book and got a 711 (97%.

Rather Low On Liberator Content For A Liberator Book
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-18
Call me old-fashioned, but when I buy a reference work on the B-24 Liberator, I expect to get a book about the B-24 Liberator. If it covers "cousins" like the cargo and VIP transport versions, fine, if it devotes time to the Privateer, great, if it covers post-war Privateer use as firebombers, even better.

However, the one thing the book rather skimps on is, uh, the Liberator. After 20 pages of covering what most people think of when they think Liberator (bomber, twin tails, built in really large numbers) it wanders off to spend almost as many pages on the single-tail YB-24N (number built - seven) then goes on to cover the use of B-24s in refuellling trials, spends the best part of thirty pages on the C-87 cargo model, and finishes off on the Privateer. The color section is split roughly 50/50 between the Liberator and other versions, although about 75% of the pictures of wartime B-24s seem to have been included because of their typically curvaceous noseart.

Don't get me wrong, this is a well-written book that gives the impression of being solidly researched. It's probably quite a nice supplement to the library of someone who has a collection of B-24 books. However, unlike most of the other titles in the Warbirdtech series, which actually cover the aircraft specified in their title, you get the impression here that somehow the main section of the book is missing and has been replaced with a quick filler chapter instead.

So...if you're looking for a good history of the B-24 this *isn't* the book for you. If you've already got a good history of the B-24, and want to know more than you ever thought possible about the YB-24N or the seating arrangements in the C-87, this is the book for you.

In the end I give it three stars - the writing and density of content is up to the usual standards of the Warbirdtech series, which'd earn it four, but the title's pretty misleading given the actual content and the fact that the Warbirdtech books often represent the start of somebody's library on a plane, not a late addition. That'd normally earn it a one or a two. So I've compromised, and settled on giving it three stars. That may be a bit generous, even.

Definitely a case where skimming the book before buying would have been a good idea. Caveat emptor, and so forth.
