As a fellow Cigar smoker, I enjoyed Tomima's concise female based book. Of the basic 2 female cigar smoking books out there, Tomima strikes the more demure chord. Very nice detail on the history. Would have loved a bit more in the illustration side of things. ;) The Cigar Wench

Cigarette Smoking: What It's Doing to Smokers and Nonsmokers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-12
The smokers who feel idiotic for developing a smoking habit in the first place, the thought of quitting may seem even harder to fathom. But take heart: "Cigarette Smoking: What It's Doing to Smokers and Nonsmoker" discusses tobacco hazards to smokers and nonsmokers and the use of Breathing Exercises and other natural ways to stop smoking. The author of over dozen books, Dr. Dhillon promotes health and not disease. His unique qualifications include advanced degree in life sciences and molecular biology from Yale University in the West, and his earlier education and experience with natural living, yoga, breathing and spirituality from the East. He uses his knowledge to use natural but scientific ways to replace smoking habit with healthy habits.

The material is presented succinctly, with good use of tables, and is referenced appropriately. The book consists of six chapters each representing an independent topic: chapter 1, The Habit of Smoking; Chapter 2, Smoke-related Health Problems and Benefits of Quitting; Chapter 3, Stopping the Habit of Smoking; Chapter 4, Smoking, Oxygen Delivery, and Breathing; Chapter 5, Breathing Exercises to Replace Smoking; Chapter 6, One-week Breathing Schedule and other Tips for Ex-Smokers. The chapters precede by introduction and are followed by two Appendices: (1) Withdrawal Symptoms and How to Handle Them; (2) List of Resources and their Programs for Help in Quitting.

Words of warm encouragement are accompanied by multiple proven techniques to conquer the quitters' enemies.

Smokers know that smoking can cause lung cancer, heart problems, respiratory ailments-- not to mention what it does to our teeth. This guide to Quit Smoking has the tips, strategies and advice you need to give up cigarettes for good. Learn how to set goals, identify and break smoking habits, choose nicotine patches and medications, design a long-term health plan, find support networks and deal with withdrawal symptoms, weight gain, stress and depression-- without lighting up.

Every individual with smoking habit, and his friends and family members with interest in dealing with the dangers of smoking for smokers and nonsmokers need this valuable book in its collection.

Book is still Available from the amazon-usa and other places and is a collectible item for a health-conscious reader.

As someone who is just starting out as an ashtray collector, I found this book to be very helpful and easy to use. Lindenberger makes a lovely presentation in that she uses excellent photographs to demonstrate examples of various types of ashtrays. Written information is limited but still quite informative. The photo quality is quite good and the suggested price guide makes collecting easy and fun. I keep this book handy for quick review after my Saturday morning yard sale attack.

A "must read" book for pipe collectors.

As a collector and admirer of meerschaum pipes, this is the book I've been waiting for. The author, Ben Rapaport, is well known among antique pipe fanciers for his earlier works, including the standard work, Complete Guide to Collecting Antique Pipes (which discusses all types of antique pipes not just meerschaums, published in 1979 and recently reprinted) and the lovely and informative Museum of Tobacco Art and History Guidebook (1996). But his newly published book, Collecting Antique Meerschaum Pipes, is in a class by itself. Although Rapaport is the leading authority in this area, he primarily lets the pipes do the talking. Of the 176 pages, the first 50 contain the scholarly background which addresses the questions of how, who, why and where these pipes were created. But even in this section at least half of the pages are dedicated to wonderful photographs of pipes, old catalogs, craftsmen and workshops. The remainder of the book is an absolutely gorgeous album of some of the most beautiful and extraordinary meerschaum pipes ever sculpted. The photographs are large so that one may see the exquisite detail, and where appropriate the reader is provided with additional particularly detailed pictures. The photography is of exceptional quality, as one would expect to find in a first-rate art book. At the end of the book the author provides a compilation of the 19th and early 20th century manufacturers and sellers of these pipes organized by country and city, and an international listing of museums and shops where one might view some of these treasures today. It is hard to imagine that anyone other than Ben Rapaport could have created a book like this. The book brings together his many years of experience as an author and collector. But just as importantly he is known and respected by the many collectors who were willing to provide him with their pipes for inclusion in this collection. If you collect pipes, if you enjoy viewing small sculptures, if you are a fan of "working art," if you want to take a look into a small and not particularly well known world of master artists and craftsman of the late 19th and early 20th century then you owe it to yourself to buy this sumptuous book.

A Classic

This book has become a classic for all of us who study Cuba's history and society. However, I must also recommend the book for any student of social and cultural anthropology interested in cross cultural interactions and acculturation ("transculturación" in Ortiz's own words. It is incredible that his ideas on this subject have been mostly ignored by the United States anthropological community, despite the strong support Ortiz received from Bronislaw Malinowsky. I highly recommend it.

A refreshing treatment of alternative economic organization. In a casual and conversational manner the author saves us the sugar coated reviews of the all-but magical Kerala development story and dives right into the reality of an industrial cooperative in an Indian state that is breaking all of the capitalist rules and still winning the game! A must read for anyone interested in the struggle to transform exploitation into cooperation and voluntary participation. This book is a breath of fresh air in the sometimes stale realm of economic literature. Includes detailed analysis of organizational structure of Kerala Dinesh Beedi.

This book really did save my life

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone who seriously wants to quit smoking. I was an addicted smoker for 35 years and have been smoke-free for 16. I know I will never smoke again.

Dr. Colby's book is a 14-day plan using self-hypnosis. I used this book, plus behavior modification techniques that I knew of (rewarding myself, etc.) and was very successful.

I wish this book would be printed and more available again, as it's literally a life saver. I had never used self-hypnosis before, but was it effective. Please get the book for yourself or anyone who wants to quit. I have bought it (after much searching) for friends, who also were able to quit. What a book!!

This book should be a requirement for all teenagers. Very informative and doesn't hold back. It says, "At the present rate of mortality 1,000,000 young people ALIVE today will be destroyed by lung cancer." Read this book and stop smoking.
