This book gave me the understanding I needed to finally kick the habit that I've been saying I was going to quit for the last 20 years! It seems every smoker really wants to quit, whether they admit it or not, but most admit it!

I needed this. It gave me insight, knowledge, courage and the tools I needed to be successful! What a gift!

Send this link to ANY smoker you know. They will be glad you did!

Whatever happened to the smoke-free society we were supposed to have by 2000? The author's thesis (which he convincingly backs up with facts and figures) is that we've been bamboozled by the tobacco industry. Instead of the sensible campaigns (led by Everett Koop, for example) to make smoking (by anybody!) socially inappropriate, which actually did bring smoking down, the tobacco folks are now concentrating on a campaign to criminalize teenage smoking..... this gets adult smokers off the hook and has actually increased teenage smoking by making it an "adult" thing to do! No wonder Philip Morris sponsors all those anti-teen-smoking ads: they've actually increased smoking more than the old cigarette ads did! Should be required reading for members of Congress (though I'm not optimistic that it will have much impact, alas).

What I found most interesting about this paper (calling it a book is an exaggeration) is that it focuses its lucid and rabid attacks where they belong: on the hopelessly flaccid anti-smoking lobby and not the tobacco industry itself. If anything, Males's charts, graphs, and refreshing commentary gave me a grudging respect for the industry's ability to use bribery, politics, and moral outrage to make everyone fall into step.

In the end, though, Smoked didn't change my ambivalent feelings toward tobacco. Partly this was because Males's uncharacteristically general discussion of the financial `cost' of smoking contributed to my suspicion that it's a myth. I was left wondering if increased healthcare costs are more than offset by the early deaths of users, the fact that tobacco is the most heavily taxed consumer product in the world, and the hundreds of thousands of jobs the industry creates. Of course there are the incalculable human costs, but hey, lots of things are bad for you.

The anger you take away from these pages will more likely be aimed at the anti-smoking lobby, which has missed every opportunity to actually reduce tobacco use and in many ways have allowed themselves to be manipulated into promoting it. Tobacco is not a public health issue in the U.S., it's a political issue. And as such, it will always be with us.

I have been a smoker for 20 years and can't even count the number of times I have tried to quit. My main problem was that I was always looking for that excuse to start again. I got this CD about two weeks ago. It is very relaxing and calming. I always listen to it before bed and usually end up falling asleep. I listened to it a couple of nights when I first got it. It's not magic. It won't make you want to quit if you don't really want to. When I decided a few days later that I really wanted to quit, I started taking the Commit lozenges and listening to the CD every night. I truly haven't wanted a cigarette and haven't smoked in a week. I have tried the lozenges before and they helped, but I always ended up going back to the cigarettes. The urge never seemed to go away. Now it has! This is truly the easiest quitting experience I have ever had. I highly recommend this CD if you are really ready to quit forever.

I bought this CD for my son and my husband. My husband used it once, but is not ready to quit. My son, on the other hand, started it about 3 weeks ago and hasn't touched a cigarette since. He's tried quitting before but never been successful. He can't believe this is working for him.

Nall's is the story one of the greatest movements in the history of the American spirit. It well covers the facts in the agricultural price war that changed the farm economy of the region forever. Faced with economic starvation tobacco farmers united, then had to defend with force their right to live and farm and make a descent return on their labor. In doing so they changed the future for tobacco farmers and instituted price and acreage/poundage allotments to control tobacco production that have remained until this present day. My family was involved in the tobacco wars, my grandfather lived in the town of Cobb, Kentucky next door to the firey Dr. Dave Amoss who led the farmer's army, the "silent brigade....yet the full story has not been told. Expect it to be futher told when "The Last Nightrider" a novel based on the exploits of my family during this time is subsequently published. Nall's book is required reading for the history buff and for the economist, the romantic and those with courage enough to secure their own fate....

This is an excellent work by a man that appreciates good cigars and pipes. Both cigar lovers and pipe lovers will find this book enjoyable and useful. Mr. Hacker is also deliciously politically incorrect, which makes it even better.

"To paraphrase that venerable corncob connoisseur..." So begins the Foreword to Richard Hacker's book. And out of due reverence, I picked up my corncob pipe, packed it with my favorite tobacco, and began to indulge myself in a pleasure that I have known for years.

Hacker's dedication of this book to Joan reminds me that the first pipe I ever owned was a Father's Day gift. There was a paw print on the card indicating that our dog, Jacob, had given me the gift. I understood. It would be a couple more years before our oldest daughter was born.

Since then the number of my pipes has expanded and some have been retired. Before I read Richard Hacker's book, I knew that I liked to smoke a pipe. But my interest does not match Hacker's by a long shot. What might one want to know about pipe smoking? The origins? How to pick the right pipe? Pipe accessories? Collectable pipes? Hacker puts it all into his book.

Though I smoke a pipe myself, I have to admit that this book is by the ultimate pipe lover.

Author Shirley Ann Gandy delivers a heartwarming account of her life growing up in the South during somewhat desperate times. The book revolves around her mother, the personification of a true Southern matron - loving, warm, generous, energetic, spirtual, and devoted to her family. This is an uplifting read and true dedication to a phenomenal woman. Highly recommended.

This true story reveals how a Southern woman lived, including raising lots of children (10+ of her own and many others, too) as well as the trials and joys of marriage--something sadly lacking in today's society. Ms. Gandy has captured her mother's life in a rare way by giving the reader insight into a wonderful woman's lessons in life, not only for her daughter but for us as well. It is a wonderful read that will make one laugh, cry, get angry and at the end feel like you really know Sallie Taylor Gandy

An excellent description of Native American spiritual practices and traditions. If ever you were curious to learn about the good red road, the significace of the pipe to Native American culture/spirituality, the sweat ceremony (rite of purification), the vision quest, the medicine wheel and much more, this book is a must read. John Redtail Freesoul draws from his own personal experiences and those of other Native Americans to create an account that is genuine, sincere and respectful. It is a new book that preserves a very ancient wisdom.
