I could hardly put this book down. The battle being fought is truly a life and death matter, alliances and strategies evolve on both sides, and the Tobacco Industry uses their multi-million war chests to mislead the public over and over and over again. Even when you think you can relax after a victory by the anti-tobacco forces, in the next chapter the Tobacco Industry is lurking behind yet another door with a butcher's cleaver, which ends up being wielded by tobacco funded politicians and the California Medical Association to cut tobacco education funds and to weaken the anti-tobacco media campaign. Really this book is about much more than California and its battle with the tobacco industry. It is the best book I've ever read about why we need campaign finance reform and effective sunshine laws. You are shown all the nitty-gritty details, the back room deals, the closed-door bargaining. You'll emerge from this book well-prepared to detect lies in future wars, and to read between-the-lines in daily newspaper coverage.

An eye-opening "Must Read" manual for activists

"The Tobacco War" is part social and political history, part "how-to" manual. Not a dry catalogue of events, but written with a sense of the human drama surrounding each twist and turn of the tale. Co-author Stan Glantz, involved so deeply in the movement, offers the most incisive, comprehensive, and definitive perspective on the California anti-tobacco effort available. I was astounded to read of the intrigue and jaw-dropping audacity of the Tobacco Industry and its allies in the State government on one hand, and the incredible courage and tenacity of those fighting it in the most aggressive and effective way in history on the other. The growth in political savvy and will of the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society is catalogued in detail, as are the machinations of the State legislature, the governor's office, and lobbyists and pressure groups when money comes up for grabs. This is an outstanding text for the social or political scientist, activists of any type, and anyone in state local politics. It is a remarkable and practical instruction manual for anyone in tobacco use prevention today. These heroes have not left the field. Their enemy, the Tobacco Industry, is immortal.

Putting a Face on a Faceless Industry

The tobacco industry is one of the most evil industries allowed to operate in America. From child labor to seductive advertising to distribution of a deadly product and ending in mountains of money in political bribes, The US Tobacco Industry has just about every imaginable negative attribute of corporate America, all rolled into one, neat package.

Tobacco War puts a face on a faceless industry, and it is not a very pretty face. From exposing the hidden truths of the seductive advertising schemes and the green blood that flows through the veins of America's political system in every level, Tobacco War doesn't simply archive news stories, lawsuits and events, but connects the dots and presents the reader with a realistic picture of how big tobacco operates.

Likewise, tomorrows activist are reading this book today to gain the edge in a climate of misinformation. Provides grass-roots information for activists to develop and deploy campaigns.

Think your cigarette maker cares about you? They have you hooked, and you are the least of their worries. They are working to reel the next generation of smokers in for the kill.

And so far, the catch is coming in... wallet and all.

This book is delightful and uplifting. I read it with my 13 year old and he enjoyed it very much, and he doesn't usually like to read!!! The stories in this book hold good life lessons. It would be a great read for anyone, but especially for young people. This would be a great selection for a middle school group reading club or class.

If your Dad ever told you that "you ain't got a lick of sense" or that "you ain't never going to amount to nothing" you will both laugh and cry with Connie as she shares her families' love and devotion to each other, their family farm and to their treasured rural culture.

Outstanding pipe reference book - plus great reading. This book finally answers many of the questions I have long had about my Falcon collection. And it gives an insider's view of pipe manufacturing back in the pipe heyday of the 50's - 70's. A GREAT addition to my pipe reference library!

Excellent! Great Historical Profile and Terrific Story-Telling!

I bought the book based on Bill Unger's recommendation - and Bill's word, as usual, is good as gold. I learned a lot here about Falcons specifically (their manufacture, nomenclatures, product lines, etc.) and about the pipe industry in general (difficulties in obtaining briar, etc.)- and I was very surprised to learn that both B. Barling & Sons and Kapp-Petersen made briar bowls for Falcon for a time. I found 'Back From The Ashes' not only a very interesting and well-written book on pipes...but also a wonderful tribute to an obviously great man - George L. Hunt of Diversey Machine Works of Chicago, one of those great American entrepreneurs who pulled himself up from his small-town (Southern Illinois) bootstraps to become a successful and prolific manufacturer. I enjoyed learning about the man behind the pipes - his great sense of humor and fun-loving ways - and his love of hunting and fishing, etc. I give it 5-stars and heartily suggest that all smoking pipe enthusiasts add this great book to their collections.

This is a terrific book--an important history that brings together a story of race, labor unions, economic change, politics, and culture, but never loses sight of the actual people involved. Very well written--not dry and academic like some history, but also very rich analytically. Buy it and read it!

In this wonderful book, African American tobacco workers tell their own story of civil rights struggle and union organizing. It is long, but so was the struggle, and I couldn't put it down. Oral interviews give us the black workers' own accounts, sending, for once, the white supremacists to the back of the bus.
Read it. You will find a South you never thought you would find.

A surprisingly thorough book of methods to stop smoking

I'm a nurse and I am embarrassed to say that I was a smoker. I was a little taken aback at first by the size of this book but relaxed and got into it because of the author's down-to-earth language. If there is any way to quit smoking that's not in this book, I would be very surprised! Dr. Blumgren offers every conceivable method of quitting tobacco--acupuncture, hypnosis, herbal products etc. (and which ones you should avoid) and backs it up with scientific studies that show you in black and white what really works and why it works. I was smoking two packs a day before. I tried two methods together and stopped smoking after 13 days. That was two months ago. No cravings and very easy! Thank you, Dr. Blumgren!

Natural was easy!

I bought this book at a book signing, at the suggestion of a smoker friend who also quit smoking by using a combination of natural rememdies. I almost still can't believe how easy it was, and there was no withdrawal! Dr. Blomgren's book is exceptionally thorough in all the different natural methods a smoker has at his or her disposal and it was generally very easy to read and follow. What was seems especially important was to make some small, strategic shifts in diet in order to create the conditions for the body to eliminate nicotine extremely slowly and avoid withdrawal symptoms. Before this, I had tried drugs and but they weren't much better than the smoking. There are some sections that are pretty technical but the book was written for clinical people as well as the general population (and you can skip over whatever doesn't apply to your own situation). I was impressed with how well researched the book was and Dr. Blomgren's ability to make difficult concepts very easy to understand. I look forward to his next book which presents the ideas of using naturopathic methods, but for children! This book is highly recommended to all smokers!!!

Combines solid psychological strategies with hard facts

Review Date: 2001-03-19
In Generation Risk: How To Protect Your Teenager From Smoking And Other Dangerous Behavior, Corky Newton reveals the extent to which the tobacco industry seeks to entrap adolescent children into addiction. These insidious efforts are abetted by a teen's immaturity, access to indulgences (especially through the Internet), and the mixed cultural messages generated by entertainment and peer group pressures. Corky goes on to inform concerned parents what they can do to help their teenage son or daughter respond to the formidable forces of their peers and culture in order avoid entrapment into addictive and self-destructive behaviors and fads, foremost of which is smoking, drinking, and the use of drugs for recreational purposes. A very highly recommended addition to personal and community library parenting reference collections, Generation Risk combines solid psychological strategies with hard facts and data, outlines highly useful "refusal" skills; and will enable a parent to communicate effectively and persuasively with their son or daughter.

A must for parents and grandparents of teens

Corky Newton speaks with an authentic and knowledgeable voice, as a mother, and as a tobacco company executive. Transcripts of interviews conducted with teenagers across the country helps us understand these baffling and alien people that we nevertheless love, cherish and pin our hopes for the future on. Her description of the sensual pleasures of opening a fresh pack of cigarettes and taking a first puff made this ex-smoker nostalgic.

Todays's teenagers face an ever increasing array of real and dangerous risks. A friend of mine's teenage son was offered drugs for sale three times one Saturday afternoon in San Francisco, and she was with him! The portrayal of teenage behavior in the movie Traffic is tragically real for some.

Ms. Newton shows us how to communicate with our teenagers, with honesty and integrity being one key, and avoidance of the word "don't" being another. From her own experience she tells of how she reacted to finding cigarettes in her son's backpack and learning of her daughter's tongue piercing, over the telephone. She discusses clearly the facts about smoking, addiction and disease although these in and of themselves are not effective in preventing many teens from smoking.

Her final chapter contains twenty-seven suggestions to help prevent teenagers from smoking and engaging in other self-destructive risk taking behavior. I wish I could send them to every parent. I have to my daughters for my not yet teen grandchildren, and to my friends with teenagers. I encourage them to share this remarkable book with their teenage children.

The most factual tale of the Night Riders and tobacco wars of old to date!

Review Date: 2005-08-21
As the step-daughter of a Caldwell County tobacco farmer, I picked up this book with a general interest in learning about the history of the area I was growing up in.

While reading this capivating novel I was relegated with additional details about the Night Rider stops in Cerulean, KY at a barn nearby my previous grandfather in-law's home. The men picked a barn in that area to stop at and switch out their tired horses for fresh ones on their way to Hopkinsville for raids and trouble-making.

All of Kentucky history as brought to life only by Mr. Cunningham truly fascinates me. Bill Cunningham is an amazing historian that has consistently recounted some of the most fascinating events in Western Ky history.

I have also recently read and highly recommend his novel: "Castle: The Story of a Kentucky Prison." I have enjoyed being captivated by his accounts and writing style.

In "On Bended Knees: The Night Rider Story" he has once again delivered! This was an amazing book that I just could not put down once I had started reading. Being a young girl raised on a tobacco farm in Caldwell County, Ky I was no stranger to the grueling work that takes place on a tobacco farm. My family depended on the tobacco markets for a living.

Mr. Cunningham brings to life the most historic and fascinating of Western Kentucky tales. This book is a must read for any and all inhabitants of Western Ky and those with a special interest in the history of the tobacco industry and West Kentucky.

I agree with the previous reviewer: this is THE novel on the Night Rider story!!

This is a history of the Night Rider movement - an outgrowth of the Black Patch Tobacco Wars in Western Kentucky from 1905 to 1912 ot so. It's a fascinating piece of American History - the tobacco farmer versus the American Tobacco Company, which is becoming a monopoly in the world of tobacco. Well researched with details of the principals, and the major raids. I also read Marshall's Violence in the Black Patch of Kentucky and Tennessee. The Cunningham book is FAR AND AWAY the better book.

In "The Paradox of Tarheel Politics", veteran reporter Rob Christensen, of the Raleigh News and Observer, provides a stellar addition to the pantheon of North Carolina political works.

This book is a must read for any politician, journalist, activist, observer or just plain interested party. Christensen deserves a medal for making the subject matter approachable to the layman. As an historical work, the book ranks among the most active and engaging stories in recent memory.

Perhaps a testament to the editors Christensen has had in his career, the prose is engaging and full of energy. There is hardly a weak spot in the entire book. Whether the reader is on vacation with hours on end or a casual nighttime bookworm reading a few pages a night, "The Paradox of Tarheel Politics" is sure to capture and hold their attention.
