Jim Burns was a true original in the world of the electric guitar. Burns guitars were like no other, and he was rightfully compared to Leo Fender. Both men had the same questing, innovative spirit, and both were utterly ingenious in their approach to creating electric guitars. Paul Day's "The Burns Book" is a wonderful tribute to and overview of these British guitars, and features comprehensive info on the Bison, the Hank Marvin models, the Jazz Split-Sound, the Scorpion, the Steer, and other beloved (at least on British shores) instruments. There is also some information on the Baldwin years, when American organ manufacturer Baldwin bought out Burns, and on Ormston and Hayman guitars, both companies that Jim Burns was associated with.

Overall this is a fantastic book, especially for fans of rare guitars. The unfortunate thing about this book is that it is somewhat dated. More information about the Burns company and Jim Burns has surfaced since it was initially published, and the Burns Company itself has staged a comeback, with its unique guitars finally being available again in the United States.

It is way past time for this book to be revised and reissued, with more (and better quality) photographs. Until then, this book will have to suffice, but it's still a great overview of a unique man and his innovative, distinctive guitars. Highly recommended for guitar junkies.

A technology that changed everything - in 1890
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-03
This obscure book is very relevant today. The electrical industry a century ago is strikingly similar to the Internet industry today. A new technology which drastically changes the way things are done across a wide range of businesses happens only rarely. Understanding what happened with electricity helps one to understand what's happening with the Internet. The patterns of corporate growth and death, the stock market hype, and the ultimate emergence of a few dominant players are all here.

This book has some rare documents, including Edison's original business plan for the light bulb. (It reads like an Internet IPO.) For that alone, it's worth it to the serious investor.

This book is a Downside.com recommendation.

The author of this book has done an exceptional job of writing this book. It has complete facts of all varities of paints. There are many things in the book that i have learnt and i have shared that knowledge with my father who is a wholesaler and retailer of automotive paints. He is the sole distributer of MaxMeyer automotive paints in Georgetown Guyana, South America. MaxMeyer is an Italian manufautured paint, under the umbrella of PPG. I am a student in Canada, and i came across this book in a second hand library. I began to read it and to my surprise it was the ideal book, for anyone who deals with all sort of paints, from house paints to automaotive paints. It is a real handy book for anyone who is knowledgeable with paints. However my father never read this book and i would really like to get a copy.

Good manager level book on TPS.

Having read most of the detailed TPS books, this one was a bit to theoretical. Realize it was likely written for the MBA crowd....

I still find it a bit odd that Toyota subject books tend to avoid the fact that no company is perfect. Wouldn't trade the hectic workweek it sounds like the Japanese based staff work for anything. I liked the references to the CEO's push even thought business was good at the time.

Handbook on Small Bore Rifle Shooting - REPRINT
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-28
I guess I wasn't paying attention when I ordered this book because I didn't realize that it's a REPRINT of a 1941 publication until it arrived. That said, it's actually a pretty good book for the price. The information is obviously dated, but the principles of basic marksmanship haven't changed. My son and I are just getting started in match shooting, and we both found the book to be quite helpful. The age of the text, and the terminology used in the writing, are actually a bit of a novelty, making it an interesting read. I'm glad I bought this book.

Not so much about print making

I found this at the library today and decided to give this little book a read. I found the book oddly fascinating. Printed in 1937, there at least two blatant racist remarks againts the Japanese. The book seems to be more of an essay on national pride and historical misconceptions. Nary a fact to be found, more a discrediting of everyone else. Which makes this quirky little book stand out. As a printmaker the book is nicely done with an unusual font and intersting style of crowding words together. I would reccommend this book for those wishing for a funny little anomoly in their collection.

Excellent book for those needing to meet GMP requirements.

This book provides extensive information for specialists in companies that have to comply with FDA regulations. It also has some good information on auditing that will be useful to quality engineers and auditors with limited experience in International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) requirements. CFR standards are tough. Compliance with them, following the lead of this book, should help a company comply with the ISO standards. Companies that comply with the ISO standards, however, might not comply with the CFR requirements This book leads the reader through a series of steps that will help the company meet CFR requirements. It goes into extensive detail identifying and interpreting the various CFRs so that the readers will not take them too lightly. Some CFRs are much too vague and can lull newcomers to the field into thinking that they are in compliance when they are not. I would have rated this book as a 5 except that only a limited number of quality practitioners have a need for this material on GMP compliance. Hank Lefevre, CQE & PE
