"Viewing his amazing images might lead to discouragement, however...Those Grand Canyon visitors following Annerino's advice of how and where to take perfect shots will undoubtedly visit scenic locales worthy of superb photographs."

Poor Excuse for a Photographer's Guide

I purchased this book in the hope of finding just a few helpful tips on photographing the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Although the introduction made some great promises, the rest of this short work didn't live up to its title. Instead of providing any information on the popular South Rim area of the Grand Canyon, the author (John Annerino) focused on obscure, difficult to reach locations. And although I concede that some photographers might find it useful to know about these distant locations, I found Annerino's information terse and lacking even in those areas. For the popular South Rim area, there is a complete lack of information. I was looking for a book that contained some basic observations as to which locations might be best for sunrise and sunset photography. This book didn't contain any of that information. From the photographs found in this book, John Annerino appears to have a nice portfolio of Grand Canyon photography. However, I found the book a poor excuse for a "Photographer's Guide." Don't waste your money. You can glean more information from the "Frommer's Grand Canyon National Park" or from a short search of the Internet.

I have taken one star out for illustrations. There is none.
However, the book is very helpful if you're traveling with a tight budget. Price admissions in one chapter is very handy as you don't need to travel between chapter back and forth.

The rankings for each attraction according to different ages helped me out in choosing which parks to visit with my 5 year old child.

There is even a chart to help you plan your days and how much you'll spend in them.

This is a waste of money the information is VERY clear quote "regarless of the vehicle you drive, you need to know where you are going." you would think if you want to go to Disneyland you would know where it is or already have a map to it. my opinion dont buy this it is stupid. there is some information but it isnt worth buying. I like the " The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland, by Bob Sehlinger."

The idea for the book is cute, but lacks much in the execution. For a photo-driven book, the images leave very much to be desired...I would be willing to bet they are not the work of a professional photographer, but more than likely a super-fan with time to kill. I guess in the end, the book is for kids, so maybe they won't notice.

The PERFECT book for all who truly believe!

NW Schrafft has compiled vivid, colorful photographs that allow the reader to become part of Fenway Park. Each letter of the alphabet is represented by interesting words/facts that relate to Red Sox baseball. My kids, my husband and I all enjoy reading through the book and looking at the photographs from Fenway Park and the games played there. It is the perfect book for the younger child who is just becoming interested in baseball (and Fenway Park) as well as the die-hard Red Sox fans who will recognize the plays Schrafft has captured on film.

Poorly laid out souvenir book. Nigel Dennis's pictures are fine, but the captions are badly positioned. The maps are few and devoid of detail. The biggest problem is the text, which is largely a geology treatise on the park...fine for the Grand Canyon, or Purnululu, but not Kruger, where the animals are the highlight. Very little on animal/animal interaction, the phenomenal bird life, fascinating riverine environments, etc. Save your money...there's more and better organized information in the pamphlet you get when you pay your entry fee to the park.

An exciting summary of this complex African ecosystem.

The pictures, the dialog, and the maps leave one with a haunting awareness of the complexity of natural systems. Animals, plants, and geology weave together into a balance that is always changeing.

Details demonstrate planning involved in theme parks

This book, with its site layouts of international theme parks and color photographs of various details of each park, is a visual treat. Accompanying the pictures is text that outlines the premise behind the design, and provides a very brief piece on the designer(s).

I most liked the international focus. Several of the theme parks were new to me, in particular the artificial Ski Dome in Japan, and the Port Aventura in Spain, which addresses multinational themes on a smaller scale than Disney.

In addition to the traditional theme/amusement park, museums, waterparks, and game preserves (Ibaraki Park, Myombe Reserve) are also featured. This expands the definition of "amusement" to include natural resources and athletic facilities as a source of pleasure and relaxation.

I would have preferred more text to accompany the photographs and scale drawings, elevations and site plans, if only to provide a deeper appreciation of the planning process that goes into this type of project. However, the information is beautifully presented, and this book demonstrates a good range of projects within its specialized subject matter. I would consider this an excellent reference for the design library, and for anyone who has enjoyed the uniqueness of theme parks and wants to understand more fully their designs.

Gorgeous photos, but not enough text

This is a high-quality book with gorgeous photos ... but not much else. The chosen parks are obscure (the only mention of Disney is Walt Disney World's Dixie Landings Resort) with very little text. It could've greatly benefited from some background information, design philosophy, even exact locations. This book would be a great addition to a coffee table, but the serious theme-park enthusiast will probably be disappointed.

Great pictures, broad overview of history... for Denali lovers and coffee tables

Review Date: 2007-07-29
Upside: The black & white pictures of Denali are alone worth the price for me. The brief history of the area, park, and people is intriguing and digs beneath the superficial facts. I appreciate the holistic, cultural context of the historical text.

Downside: I cannot help but feel like the organization of the content is lacking, particularly the text. I was thinking the pictures would be predominantly of the parks (i.e. mountains, rivers, animals, etc.) but the opposite is true (not that the landscape pictures aren't phenomenal because they certainly are).

Verdict: If you're big on Denali, as I am, you'll find value in it (or if you want something small and unique for a coffee table). Otherwise stick to your druthers.

This book intrigued me because it was only given out to employees of the Disney Company. Basically it is a book about letters of commendation of Disney and particular employees. Each page includes a picture of said employee as well as a brief quote about the event. This book seams to have been developed as another way to remind the Disney employees at all levels why Disney is known for its exemplary service. I enjoyed the book for it's insight into the working of the company as well as the posed pictures of the employees with there famous Disney smiles. This book is hard bound with a dust cover, but it is only 61 pages long. Even with the rather short size of the book it did get a little dull after a short while. Still I am sure this was a nice book to receive for free from your company.

This book is essentially a blatantly basic guide to WDW. It's not really in-depth at all with brief attraction, restrauaunt and such reviews.

Still if you're a first timer to WDW this is a good book to get the basics down with, but a bit short for the money it costs. I recommend (and have reviewed) the Unofficial Guide to WDW, although that's not perfect either (4 stars).

If you want to read the same old [information] about Disney, buy another guide book. The title says it all- irreverent. If you don't want to hear the negative things, don't buy the book. Contrary to the other reviews of this book, I really enjoyed it. It was helpful, hilarious, and a breath of fresh air. I used 3 other guide books for my trip which all gave the same exact info. This book gives you the real goods. I planned a very short stop-over in Orlando, and quite frankly the thought of trying to prioritize which of the hundreds of attractions to check out made me ill. Not only that, but I didn't want to waste my hard earned money only to be disappointed. Let's face it, Disney and Orlando are not cheap. This book let me know what to expect and helped me to make informed decisions. I never buy just one guide book- this was definitely a good supplement. I plan on seeing if there is an irreverent guide available for my next destination.

It is true that this reveiwer seemed to hate all things Disney and prefered the other Orlando area attractions. This book would be fine if I was looking for information on other area attractions, but I bought the book for information on WDW.

The information they did provide on WDW was out of date. The book was published in 2002; however they talk about visiting Discovery Island (closed in 1999), River Country (closed 2001?), the Skyway (closed 1999), etc.

I was so disappointed in this book. I am a true Disney fan and I was looking for an unbiased opinion of Disney World, what I got was useless information about WDW and alot of information on why I shouldn't go to WDW.

Simply Awful

...

Since most of the guides don't change much from year to year, I bought 2 new books for this trip... The Irreverent Guide and the Unoffical Guide by Bob Sehlinger. For extra money, the Unofficial Guide offers a whopping 524 more pages (768 vs. 244).

Both books offer the same "take" on WDW... An impartial, tell it like it is account of the happiest place on earth. The Unofficial Guide not only offers it's opinion, but almost always also offers reader comments about the various attractions/resorts/restuarants. The Unoffical Guide is also organized MUCH more efficiently, and it is very easy to go back and find information even without using the index. The Irreverent Guide is a mess that even an index doesn't help. The Irreverent guide also has some glaring errors; for example, it "reviews" both Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin and Dream Flight. IIRC, Buzz took over Dream Flight's space.

The key reason that I bought the Irreverent Guide was for the actual irreverence...which doesn't really exist.

In a nutshell, this is the worst WDW Guide that I have ever purchased...and then has a terrible price vs. content ration on top of it.

Too irreverent

I am always dubious when a book contains as many typographical errors and misspellings as this one does. Sea World's coaster is Kraken, not "Kracken" and the ride at Disney MGM is the Tower of Terror not "Twilight Zone of Terror." When you see this you have to ask whether the writer and editor fully understand (or care about) what they are writing about.

The title is a misnomer -- this book contains nearly as much information about the nearby Universal parks as it is about Walt Disney World. Not a bad thing, but if you do not plan to visit Universal (we didn't) much of the content here will be useless to you.

I give it a star because there are a few more insider tips than you'd find in an article in the travel section of your Sunday newspaper and some of them are refreshingly negative -- I do appreciate it when a travel writer comes out and tells us when she thinks something is bad. The phone numbers are well organized. Some of the restaurant recommendations were great.

Overall, however, the text is poorly organized, sometimes repeating information you just read in an earlier chapter. For the most part, the author seems to favor cute puns over information you can actually use. After reading "The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, 2001," this was a huge disappointment.
