Images to get lost in.

The process Gordon Parks used when he made these photographs was innovative and unique. He painted beautiful watercolors, placed leaves and other objects suspended over them and made awesome photographs of the resulting image. The images are remarkable. His poetry harkens back to the age of civil rights strife and are a disturbing glimpse into that dark era. Somehow the beautiful images and troubled poetry are at odds with one another - but maybe that was his point. He was a great artist.

Bruce Davidson's "Central Park" is a compelling look at one of the world's most unique urban places. Unlike "Brooklyn Gang" or "Portraits," Davidson shoots his subjects here with a wide-angle panoramic camera. The result is fascinating as the images meld odd angles, distorted bodies and expansive views, and at no point does it come across as cliched or gimmicky. Instead, the photographs are hopeful, intimate, and revealing. Davidson shows us some of the park's secret places, but mostly he has discovered, through his visual explorations, the secret of what makes Central Park an essential part of New York life.

"The seeds of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural philosophy are found in his Home and Studio at Oak Park, Illinois. It was here--from 1889 to 1909--that Wright tested his theories, which would coalesce into his famed Prairie style. Always experimenting with materials, forms, colors and the shaping of space, Wright constantly remodeled the Home and Studio, adapting to the changing needs of his family and work. By the 1970s, after the Home and Studio had been remodeled still more and sold several times, the unique structure, fabrics, and materials that so defined Wright's establishment had all but disappeared.
"Recognizing the importance of the Home and Studio, the city of Oak Park and the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust (then the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Foundation) set out to revitalize the community and preserve the historic building. Building a Legacy is a fascinating pictorial story of the incredible thirteen-year restoration effort.
"With conversational text, informative sidebars, and historic and present-day photographs and drawings, the book commemorates the dedicated efforts of community volunteers and paid workers. Covering the grassroots efforts to raise money, the detailed plan for the restoration, and the painstaking efforts necessary to complete the project, Building a Legacy documents this successful achievement of saving an intimate creation of one of the world's greatest architects."--Borders

Gardens & Glass At Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago

Artist Dale Chihuly's forty-year career continues to surprise and astound as he radically transforms perceptions about the medium of glass. In this beautifully illustrated book, you will see Chihuly's extraordinary installations at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago. He has taken glass well beyond the traditional display case, out into nature itself. The brilliance of color and form of the glass, and the plants it is set among, creates a new reality within the conservatory. Long before arriving at Garfield's gate, Chihuly had been placing his work in unusual settings, often outdoors. From the canals of Venice to the historic walls of the ancient city of Jerusalem, Chihuly has worked his magic. These images, side by side with Chihuly's quotes, provide insight into the personality of this major artist, and show the wide range of his interests as well as his sense of humor.
An essay by Barbara Rose addresses Chihuly's place in art history, while the essay by Garfield Conservatory director Lisa C. Roberts provides a history of garden conservatories captured so effectively in the vintage postal cards from Chihuly's own collection that open the book). Artist Mark McDonnell explores the intriguing locations that Chihuly is drawn to and his ongoing interest in glass buildings.

I have read many of Gordon's works. This offering is seasoned with the sage of a wiser thinker (if that's even possible). The color and composition of the photos is stellar. I have seen none better. The words which accompany the pictures are almost as captivating as the visual experience. The pictures which stand alone are equally as dynamic inasmuch as they make you want to take them apart and see how they work.
You will want to get a copy for yourself and one for each of your closest "art lover" friends or associates.

A stunningly unique, beautiful book! Wege's glorious paintings are printed on fold-outs 40" wide (perfect to prop open on a sofa) so one can relish the vibrant matte colors throughout the day. She passionately grasps the essence of the changing seasons, the diverse locations, with colors and brushstrokes to astound you. Don't miss this very special book about the soul of our land and a very important concept: leaving wilderness alone.
