Beautiful pictures illustrates the many different wolves that were restored to yellowstone (#10, #9etc...). Illustrates the effort the yellowstone had to put in to restore the wolf to its natural habitat. Very interesting to the average wolf lover and those who are interested in what happened in the 1995 restoration of the wolves to yellowstoen.

Captures Yosemite's essence

Yosemite may be my favorite place in the world, and so I picked up this book with some trepidation. No fear! It is true to my memory of the grandeur of scale of El Capitan and the towering granite cliffs, the warm cinnamon-colored bark of sequoias and the still, reflective surface of sections of the Merced River. Best of all, it allows you to experience Yosemite's timeless serenity - a quality difficult to appreciate amidst the throngs in the park itself. For anyone who has visited and loved Yosemite, the photos are evocative of the spirit of the valley - seedlings and shifting sunlight and the flow of the river against the background of ancient trees and unyielding granite. I would buy the book for the photography alone, but the accompanying poetry brings the photos down to a more human scale. Here you have a sensitive man's upwelling of joy and awe in the presence of a sacred space.

I visited Yosemite first about five years ago, and was enchanted and enthralled by its beauty. I know I am not the only one: I follow a long line of artists in many disciplines who have loved Yosemite and her glacial carvings and ancient trees... and then, crafted in the ways they know how, lasting tributes.

Dan Windisch is indeed one of those artists whose development I will now be keeping up with. His photographic and poetic work both in this small publication are reminiscent of someone who has developed a reverence for spirit and for nature, and this reveals itself to a spectacular degree in his work.

I felt both energized and inspired after my experience with this book. Its more than worth [the money] for a look: in my opinion, the calm spirituality and deep wisdom expressed here borders on being there, borders on the actual experience

I have been lucky enough to have Dr.Dan Windisch as an instructor at Saint Martin's College. I was thrilled and amazed when he shared his poetry with us. The photographs in this book are luminous. What a surprise to find out that my instructor is a poet as well. His poems show his attention to the details of nature that others may ignore. I appreciated his carefully selected photographs to accompany the poems as well. The words and images complement each other. This book would make a delightful gift; I plan to give a copy to my mom and dad. They enjoy camping and hiking; so, I know this collection of poems and photos would mean a lot to them.

The poems alone are enough to send your imagination soaring into the power and fragility of nature. Coupled with the collection of photographic portraits of nature that Dan Windisch captured, I found myself transported into the wonderous beauty of Yosemite National Park. I hope to see more Photos and Poems about our nations treasures, our National Parks. I may be biased, since I am a long-time employee of the National Park Service, but I think that everyone who loves nature will enjoy this book.

An unforgettable read.
Without a word and thus with incredible strength. It's not a political message, it's not an argument with solutions to problems.
It's just an extremely strong and human message.
A book I wish more people would read.

This book rekindled my interest in B&W photography...and since I live near a major zoo, also zoo photography. Not every photo is of the same quality, but in this book are the most singularly beautiful B&W images I have ever seen! The layout and quality are tops. I LOVE THIS BOOK. Now having said that, I must admit I love zoos...and thank heavens for them for keeping alive some of nature's most wonderful creatures which have been suffering terribly in recent years in the wild. The damage done to wildlife conservation by the Sierra Clubs and the PETAs of the world cannot be understated. So, I do not agree with her message but I love her spectacular images.

As youngsters most of us felt excited when we went to zoos to see "wild" animals. This book shows us how things may look like from the other side of the cage/barrier. The Images are stunning not only for their artistic beauty but also the message they convey: unforgettable yet heart-breaking. The composition and lighting of the black and white prints are just great.

Never have I seen a collection of photography like this book. The book not only shows the beauty of all sorts of animals but also depicts the harshness of the reality they face each day living in a zoo. The contrast between nature's awesome creatures and man's desire to put them on display is a haunting story. This photographer tells it well.

This is an excellent book on the beautiful and inspiring paintings of Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. Exceptional value with 88 colour reproductions of his work. The written material is faultless and fascinating. Roerich was dedicated to Beauty and I find that whenever I dip into this book I am completely captivated by his ability to speak to my innermost heart and spirit through the language of colour and the rich symbolism of his paintings. Fascinated by the legends of Shambhala and the wisdom of the ancients, Roerich's paintings and Decter's words take us on a wonderful journey that will enrich our lives. Roerich was a very deeply spiritual man and so his paintings serve this higher purpose. If you wish to light the inner fire of your spirit through art and beauty, then this is the book for you.

A fascinating biograpy with over 80 paintings reproduced.

The book contains over 80 of his paintings, drawings and theatrical set designs. The biographical accounting is fascinating and inspiring. I found this book very enjoyable and highly recommend it. I was greatly moved by the life story, poems, and art of this remarkable person named David Chethlahe Paladin in "PAINTING THE DREAM".

Through his colorful life, suffering, and cultures; he brought me to an understanding of our inter-connectedness with one another and the universe.

It is relevant that we learn from his knowledge base, in order to live better, healthier, and a more harmonious exsistance. We must understand that there is so very much more for us to understand.

David opens up a window you have never looked through before.

No matter who you are, where you came from, your sorrows and joys of your life experience; there is no way that you can walk away- after reading this book and experiencing the essence of this exceptional human being- that you won't be positively inspired for the rest of your life.

I bought this book after hearing Carolyn Myss's version of Paladin's story. I was surprised to read Paladin's version which is quite different; Myss seems to have invented some facts. All that aside, this a deeply moving book. You feel what it is to be a shaman, and visually it is beyond description. I wondered why a paperback was so expensive, and then I saw the 31 plates. I would be thrilled to have any of this art in my home. The back of the book says you can buy it. If I had the money I would. This is a stunning book for anyone interested in healing.

And, strangely, it also opens our eyes to our own inner world! Magnificient.

This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a well-told story and enjoys baseball. It is a heart-warming and well paced story and the characters are very well developed and extremely likable. It was written with humor as well as warmth and I felt like I was getting to know each player on the team. It was very hard to put down once I got started. The follow up is also nice where each of the surviving members of the original team give some retrospective on their experiences 50 years ago. I read the book while attending the 2008 Little League World Series and found myself rooting for the Mexican team this year. But as we all know they lost to Hawaii.
I also had the opportunity to meet the author who was doing a book signing in Williamsport. He is a very kind and personable gentleman and I had the opportunity to speak with him for a few moments. We are all eagerly awaiting the release of the film which was originally scheduled for release in August.
Great book and a wonderfully told story!

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "little-GIANTS FROM MEXICO WIN 1957 LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES & WIN THE HEARTS OF U.S.A. & MEXICO!"
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-19
In 1957 a tiny inexperienced Little League team from Monterrey, Mexico... a team that had never been a team before... because there had never been a Little League in Monterrey before... became the first team from outside of America to win the coveted Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This is a story for anyone who has ever been such a big underdog, that no one would even take you seriously... this story is for anyone who not only lived on the wrong side of the tracks... but it's also for anyone who lived so far on the other side of the tracks... that it never even entered their wildest imagination... that there was even such a thing as tracks.

This team of undersized future hero's lived in abject poverty. Most of the boys had no shoes... let alone any baseball cleats. Their homes had no electricity or running water. Most of the boys either slept on hay or the floor. Their Mother's hand sewed their baseball gloves. The first baseball they used was made out of cloth and straw. What these boys lacked in possessions, they made up for with faith. Their life was built around the church, and the church was run by Padre Esteban.

Padre Esteban had an old radio, that when he twisted the dial just right could get of all things... Brooklyn Dodger radio broadcasts. All the kids would huddle around the radio whenever the Padre would tell them the Brooklyn Dodgers were playing. So despite the fact that none of the kids had ever been to a game... or seen a game... which would be pretty hard to do... since none of them had ever seen a TV... the Brooklyn Dodgers became their favorite team. The kids would fight over who would be Duke Snider... who would be "Geel" Hodges... who would be Carl Furillo. And one baseball loving, poverty stricken, dreamer... Angel Macias... only wanted to be SANDY KOUFAX. Angel was the instigator of the "impossible dream"... he wanted to have a baseball team. One day Angel finds an old baseball in a deserted lot, and since he has no one to play catch with in the middle of the day, he starts pitching by himself, by throwing the ball against the wall of a deserted dilapidated shack... THUMP!... THUMP!.... THUMP!... The thumping and smacking of the ball against the wall wakes up a grumpy factory worker named Cesar Faz who was sleeping inside. Angel asks him to play catch... Cesar says no... Angel keeps THUMPING the ball against the wall... Cesar takes the ball, tells him to get lost and goes back to sleep. Angel keeps coming back day after day... and slowly coerces Cesar to play catch... and then shares his dream of a team... and that leads to what can only be described as... no less than a true-real-life-fantasy-come true!

With Cesar as the coach they recruit other poor kids and one snobby well-off kid, who winds up having his life and personality changed by the poor kids, who are richer in "FAITH". They raise the small amount of money necessary (but extremely large to them) to enter the Little League tournament, where ONE-LOSS AND YOU'RE OUT. They have enough money to get a bus ride, (with their clothes in grocery bags) to the American border on the day of the game... but that's all. The entire team, and the coach, who has to carry all the equipment, then has to walk TWELVE MILES in the 90-100 DEGREE Texas desert heat, to where the game is... and... when they get there... they have to play the game. Nobody gives them a chance, and there are some derogatory comments from some Texan's in the stands denigrating Mexican's. It should be noted that the Monterrey Industrial Little League players not only look malnourished... but later a Little League doctor stated after giving them all a physical... that "they're about thirty-five pounds lighter and six inches shorter than average." The "LITTLE-GIANTS" as the press started calling them after their first win in Texas, then won five straight games in McAllen, Texas... and at the same time... won over the hearts of the town. Unfortunately the "LITTLE-GIANTS" only had money and clothes for one game. Playing one game alone, had already fulfilled their wildest impoverished dream. If the reader hasn't got goose bumps by this point... you surely will, when the local Texas town folk, start giving them food and money to continue their Don Quixote like dream. The Monterrey team continues winning games in Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, and Louisville Kentucky, on the way to the Little League World Series in Williamsport Pennsylvania. This "faithful" band of Little Leaguer's never go on the field for a game without a prayer by the clergy. Padre Esteban who accompanied the team on this "one game trip" performed these daily rituals, but when this day trip became 2-3 weeks, he had to leave to get back to his church. In the Southern Regional finals in Kentucky, the team refused to go on the field without a Priest leading them in a prayer. They were threatened with a forfeit, which would end this fantastic dream... and they still wouldn't leave the dugout... when an African American lady in the stands, said her neighbor was a Minister and she went and got him. The minister led them in prayer and the boys went out and won again. Now they had no money to get to the World Series. The Minister who said the prayer, asked for donations at his church, and also took the churches bus and drove the team to Pennsylvania. Mexico's team... had become America's dream. In the championship game they were matched against heavily favored La Mesa of California, who along with their experience... had a massive size advantage... one of the "LITTLE-GIANTS" was four feet seven inches and weighed sixty-five pounds... the La Mesa center fielder was fourteen inches taller, and one-hundred-pounds heavier.

Pitching the championship game for Monterrey was Angel "KOUFAX" Macias. Did I mention that Angel pitched with his LEFT AND HIS RIGHT HANDS? I'm not giving anything away, since there is so much... before... during... and after... the game... that will make you believe in magic... and believe in... the decency in human beings... throughout the world... when I tell you that Angel "Koufax" Macias pitched the first perfect game in the history of the Little League World Series, for Monterrey's THIRTEENTH CONSECUTIVE WIN. This heartwarming story that starts with boys that had never been in a car before... or seen a TV before... ends up with them meeting the President of the United States... being greeted by over FIVE-HUNDRED-THOUSAND-FANS when they returned to Monterrey... and even more important to the boys... they got to go to EBBETS FIELD AND MEET THEIR HEROES "THE BROOKLYN DODGERS"!

A Must Read if you care about wolves

This is absolutely one of the BEST books on wolves I've ever read! It is packed full of information but does not come across like an encyclopedia. It's easy reading with lots of colorful photographs. I was overcome with sadness and angry when I read McIntyre's account of the story of "Raggs the Digger," one of the famous and incredibly clever so-called "outlaw wolves" that eluded federal government capture for years. The book gives a lively and animated detail of how a famous bounty hunter "finally" killed Raggs, an indomitable spirit. It is an important reminder that there is no animal who will EVER be a match to a human being with a gun intent on killing it.

Excellent and readable book. I couldn't put it down. If you care about wolves, are simply interested in wolves and want to know their story, buy this!

I have learnt so much from this book that it is now a requirement for all my guides to read it from front to back, so they are totally educated on wolves. Rick McIntyre's A Society of Wolves captures everything you want to learn about wolves, including their behavior, pack structure, and how similar they are to us. This book is a must if you are interested in wolves, wildlife and Yellowstone.

Rick McIntyre does us a great service with this book. It is an excellent compilation of written material and photographs that will prove transformational to anyone interested in wildlife. A moving account of day-to-day life in a wolf pack, it also provides an invaluable history of wolf persecution in this country. He also lists excellent resources to contact to learn more about the fate of the wolf and how to become active in their reintroduction. This book answers the questions "Where did all the wolves go?" and "Why do we need them back?" An important and compelling read.

I was privilaged to be present at the slide show presented by Carl Heilman at the annual Adirondack Club dinner last autumn. Many exquisite pictures from this book were shown. Mr. Heilman has captured the true spirit of dawn in the mountains, children leaping with joy , winter landscapes, and especially the wild creatures that most of us may never be patient enough to discover in their natural homes. Many shots exhibit a seemingly impossible depth of field sharply focusing on both a spider web in the foreground and Mount Marcy in the background. The book is full of beautiful images not to be missed!

Photographer Carl E. Hellman has crafted a collection of Adirondack photographs that continue to fascinate page after page. All aspects of this remarkable region are well represented from the wildest of waterways and majectic peaks to the outlying areas of cozy farms and inland towns. By far the most amazing photographs are those in wide-screen format - much wider than anything this reviewer has seen elsewhere. Ranging from awe-filled aerial views from high peaks in all seasons to the intimate settings of bogs and marshes, Hellman captures the mood of these mountains. Mist shrouded ponds, newly falling snow, green glimpses through mature virgin forests and close-ups from lady-slippers to primeval bogs; the viewer is mesmerized. Overwhelming beauty and the calm feeling of a lonely untouched wilderness is caught everywhere. This is a collector's item to cherish all year long.
