As One Who Should Know . . .

. . . I firmly believe that Gina Pera's book will be immensely helpful to people who live with someone with AD/HD. Be it how to deal with denial, identify symptoms, or devise coping strategies for relationships in trouble, this book offers wise counsel and an abundance of practical strategies from couples who live with an invisible "third partner"--Attention Deficit Disorder.

I speak as someone in such a relationship. On page after page, I read my own story in the words of others, continually whacking my forehead in recognition as I recalled yesterday's, last week's, last year's loss of marital equilibrium riding the wild AD/HD roller coaster with my long-suffering partner.

I know that I'll be turning to Ms. Pera's book again and again for its exhaustive lists of resources and references alone. But the most important, most valuable single thing it offers to the adult who has AD/HD is validation--the reassurance that they are not lazy, crazy, or stupid. This book shows that the condition is serious but needn't be crippling to a relationship, and that effective coping strategies exist for couples who are willing to seek them.

The "Our Bodies, Ourselves" for Adults w/ADD

I recalled the shock of recognition and thrill of a first encounter with the unadulterated truth that I had when I read "Our Bodies, Ourselves" as a thirteen year old girl, as I read "Is it You, Me or Adult ADD? by Gina Pera.

As a 43 year old women with ADD who was married to a man with untreated ADD, the book rang so true and touched upon so many of our struggles that it was, at times, disorienting to read them detailed in the pages of a book written by an author who did not know my story. Often, I could only read a few pages before needing to take a break and let the enormity of the suffering and needless pain that ADHD causes in adult relationships to sink in.

For too many of us, the real tragedy comes from having seen expert couple therapists for years desperately trying to make our relationships work, while the good will, intimacy and benefit of the doubt was drained out of the marriage as each new round of therapy failed, all the while, never being offered the information provided in this book that could have put us on the path to understanding.

Gina Pera lays out the necessary truth about the impact of adult ADD on relationships and provides a framework to view the issues not as insurmountable, but rather as typical for our population and, in fact, manageable with the right treatment for ADD.

I urge all couples with children who have AD/HD to read this book. Because research tells us that this disorder is genetic, you and your partner may be affected by AD/HD without knowing it and your relationship may be needlessly imperiled. You may save your marriage by discovering how ADD plays itself out in relationships and learning how to address those issues in your own home.

This book provides clear descriptions of the classic dynamics that often underlie the interactions of adults with AD/HD and concrete strategies to preserve the respect and love that you have for your partner while working to make the relationship fulfilling for both of you.

I am in awe of Gina Pera's writing and her ability to harness what looks and sometimes felt like unrelated, distressing events into a cogent, comprehensive portrait that depicts in a devastatingly accurate fashion what life and love feels like being married to an adult with ADHD.

Thanks to this book, we, adults with ADD, can understand the emotional consequences of our behavior, accept responsibility for it and work to empathize with and advocate for our children, spouses and, most importantly, ourselves with a clear mind and full heart.

Thank you to Gina Pera for writing such a wonderful book. Pera's book has been a life preserver in the rough waters of a marital relationship impaacted by ADD. Her perspective and insights have enabled us to take some important, healing steps forward. I strongly recommend this book to couples impacted by ADD. I've never written a review before for Amazon but have been so moved by this book, I wanted to make sure others knew how great this book is.

Is it denial or cllearly not seeing things?

. This is not just another book on ADD (ADHD). It is a really great book on ADD in relationships. Gina writes for the other person - the one without ADD - who lives with someone who has ADD. However, this book is also for people who have ADD.

There is so much meat, so much truth, so much aliveness and consideration in this sharing of the real world, day to day stories of ADD in families and relationships. With tears in my eyes, I found myself reading the book one Sunday morning thinking of people whose lives could be helped and supported by reading this book.

Gina's sheer brilliance and attentiveness to detail combines with an absolutely beautiful clear and entertaining writing style as she shares information and stories illustrating the inside out story. Add to this wonderful writing style - graphs, tools, strategies and this book becomes an incredible value.

When I got to the chapter on "Biological Denial," I was shouting out loud to the universe, "Yes! YES!" In this chapter she explores the distinction between denial and having low-insight or an inability to self-observe. The well-worn and sometimes pejorative psychological term - denial - is used to describe the repression of observations and perceptions in order to avoid unwanted thoughts and memories from emerging. Is this, however, the right term to apply to some folks who just don't seem to get it?

Gina refers to the research of clinical psychologist, Xavier Amador, professor at Columbia University and former director of research at the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The work of Amador and his colleagues has helped to explain that certain conditions like bipolar disorder, substance use disorder and ADHD, which affect the frontal lobes, may be accompanied by anosognosia - a clinical term for the inability to see any problem or to accurately see one's symptoms. Conditions affecting the frontal lobe can inhibit accurate self-observation. The sum total - "Yes, your ADD partner, child or boss, might not really see him or herself clearly."

Gina doesn't leave us hanging somewhere between denial and impaired self-observation. She goes on to explore how to begin a conversation with someone who is, perhaps, clearly not seeing things or not seeing things as clearly as you might hope. She writes with absolute respect and understanding about having ADD. Trust me, if you live with someone who has ADD or if you have ADD, you will find this book a supportive insightful read. I know it will be infinitely helpful for friends and associates of mine who live and work with individuals and families who have Asperger's Disorder, as well.

I say to Gina, "Thank you! Job well done."

FINALLY, a book written for the non-ADHD partner

Thank you Gina Pera!

Finally, a book written for non-ADHD partners. After a long search for reliable information, this book arrived. Most books on the market are written for a person with ADHD, and not chiefly for partners thereof. Maybe there should be more support groups, such as, ADD/ADHD Anonymous available. Dr. Schwartz offers good help online at mentalhelp.net; however, there are some limits. In fact, this is where the author was found.

The book was received today, and there was so much to read AND highlight. The text offers a great "peace of mind," helps one realize the truth, no longer blaming yourself, and helps one comprehend the complexity of their situation. There are stories from lives of others that clarify multiple topics, and also may help project what non-ADHD partners are facing. The best part is the included "Tip Sheets" to help understand, cope, and/or not take the ADHD-bait.

If your partner has ADD/ADHD, whether it is diagnosed or not, this text is highly recommended. Also, as reflected by the diagnosis, some ADHD'ers exhibit strong symptoms of denial, including remorse when others [or their partner] attempts to discuss the illness.

Warning: Anger, and other unnecessary conflicts may occur as a result of having this text or others present. Therefore, if you have been a heavy sufferer, it may be best to put a book cover on this, and keep it to yourself while reading and learning more. Remember that AWARENESS alone can change everything. This book gives you the insight and wisdom to see what you may not have realized, and helps sufferers not to *react* to symptoms, but to recognize them.

Those with the diagnosis may also benefit from this book if they are able to read with an open mind. Often, it can be difficult for anyone to [look in the mirror and] understand how they are affecting those around them. Indeed, this book is good first step for those whom may or may not be diagnosed. It will offer unique insights into that which may be unconsidered. Finally, the roller coaster can be stopped and parked forever.

In closing, we wish the very best to everyone, and send a very special thanks to the author.

I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful book. This is my 19 month old son's favorite. I found this at a yard sale, and upon seeing it for the first time, my son said "OOOOOOOH!" and started flipping through the pages excitedly. The illustrations are soft and intersting to toddlers and even though it is an alphabet book, the story hold anticipation and facination. We love it!

A wonderful way to teach children the ABCs and to understand a story about how something is built. Several members of my family are in the architecture, engineering and construction fields, so this book is a great way to help my son learn more about his relatives' jobs. Great pictures, too!

I got this book for my son who is in love with construction vehicles thinking it would be another way to teach the alphabet. The illustrations are terrific - lots of things to see, name and tell the color of. The story, while it rhymes, uses lots of words, not just the same simple ones over and over. (I didn't know it rhymed until I read it on my own without stopping to comment on every little thing on the page!) My son has since incorporated some of the "big" words from this book into his every day lexicon.

I love this book!

It's not just one story, but it's many different stories of all the people who decide to ride (or not ride) the roller coaster. The text is simple and fun to read out loud and aptly captures the liveliness of riding a roller coaster. The illustrations are masterful, rich with details and wonderfully expressive characters, but never overly crowded. Each viewing of this book will reward the reader with new surprises and new storylines.

Like the young protagonist in the story, I can't wait to ride this one again!

My 4 year old grandson loves roller coasters so I bought this book for him. Each night I read this book over and over - he never gets tired of it, it's his favorite book. We pretend he is on the roller coaster and I trace his finger over the loops, we start where the people get on and go up the hill very slow and then swoosh down and around, the upside down part is his favorite. This is a fun book with great illustrations.

I read this story to a kindergarten class who really enjoyed it. One little boy listened with his two arms up "roller coaster" style imitating the twists and turns and "Wheeeees" throughout the book. A lively discussion occurred about whether the little girl should go on the coaster for a second ride. The writer/illustrator captures the intensity of feelings that we've all experienced on a roller coaster.

This book is basically another in a long line of coaster thrill books designed to prolong the excitement of riding these amusement park behemoths. This latest book is tastefully done and includes the requisite history with lots of familiar and some rediscovered photos and prints of old timers. A few of the newer beasts are included with enticing views of riders being turned in spine tingling directions. Coker's text is well written. This book has enough new stuff to warrant it's inclusion in your coaster book library.

When was the last time you had so much fun screaming? Probably last time you were on a roller coaster, your hair tingling, your eyeballs popping, and your stomach churning. Robert Coker, a talented journalist, has been everywhere you've been and more, and he describes the different rides he's been on, whether wooden or steel, coaster or twister, with a different appropriate writing style that will make you feel you're in the same box, hurtling hundreds of feet downwards after a longslow climb.

Maybe the best part is Coker's sneak preview of coming attractions, rides they're building out there that we may not get to stand on line for just yet. But, a boy can dream, can't he?

This is really a very good book. The book features some great photographs, but not so many that it is simply a coffee table book. There is still plenty of great information, from the standard "history of coasters" discussion to a directory of parks referenced in the book.

I think what I like most about this book, is that it provides some great photos and informative text on interesting coasters that you don't always here about such as the White Cyclone and The Bandit at Yomiuri Land in Japan as well as many coasters at smaller parks in the states.

The book divides its space well between woodies, steel hyper coasters and steel loopers. It even gives space to water rides and spin and pukes. The book was published in 1996, so of course none of the latest and greatest coasters are featured, but it provides a very full and diverse selection of rides and I can't say enough about the great photos of rarely featured coasters. Well worth the purchase price for any coaster nut.

This is the best coaster book!

Nice pictures and good descriptions of many roller coasters, including some NOT in North America. The book begins with a history and sometimes dabbles into the science of the rides. A bit more precision on the science of the rides is desired. The large middle section is devoted to just about every kind of type of coaster except the (now defunct) side friction coaster. Chapter 3 briefly includes white knuckle rides that are not coasters.

I grew up a Met fan in the 70's but his career in NY was a bit vague to me. I knew him better down the pike in Philly while unfortunately having to root against him. I learned so much about him while turning every page and he made me laugh and later brought me close to tears. The book was splended and showed many of his peaks and valleys, reminded me and informed me of his baseball career. Its often said that "this (one) is unique," but Tug truly was one-of-a-kind and apparently a joy to many. The adversity he experienced was wide-spread and unfortunately it may've trickled down to his children, specifically the now renown, Tim McGraw. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, especially those that knew him during his sports career; the final 100 pages were riveting as you get a front row seat at his final months riding a bad roller-coaster.

First off I will admit to no small amount of prejucice when it comes to this book. I have been a Phillies fan since the 1970's and was a huge fan of Tug Mc Graw's growing up. In saying this perhaps this book had a deeper effect on me than the average person as I was aware of a lot of the events that Tug relates in this narrative of his life. What I was not aware of was his incredible courage while he was fighting this illness and the amazing warmth and generosity of his son, C&W star Tim Mc Graw. I feel you have to have grown up as part of Tug's generation to understand his motivations and behaviors. I am not saying that excuses the mistakes he made but it did help me to understand the WHY of what he did. In addition it made me appreciate all the more the courage it took him to admit those mistakes and the effort he put forth trying to correct them. This is an extremely moving and emotional tale with tremendous highs and lows and should effect everyone who reads it. Also this is an incredibly honest insight into the psyche of professional athletes in the 70's and 80's. Highly recommended for its' passion and honesty.

Tug McGraw has had a shameful life story that not many people have known about. He had done some very bad things like neglecting his son, country singer Tim McGraw, because he refused to believe that he was his son. When he was dying he forgave everybody and was nice to all of his relatives, and admitted to all of the wrong things he did. He really showed that he was sorry for everything and he would have changed a lot if he could.

I was truly impressed by how he handled everything when he was dying. He is definitely an amazing man, in more than one way.

He had many family-related problems that he got through. He was a little crazy too, but a motivational speaker really got him to the World Series by telling him, "Ya Gotta Believe!"

A crazy and honest ride

Tug McGraw was a bonafide original. From his thigh slap to his screwball to his love of a good time, Tug did things his way. But as he says during the book, sometimes his way was the selfish way. The most compelling part of the book for me was him discussing his relationship with his son Tim. From refusing to acknowledge his fatherhood to completely ignoring him (other than one visit in Houston) to finally coming around and taking responsibilty for himself and his son.

That's a main theme in this book, taking responsibility. Unlike his ex-teammate Pete Rose who seemingly blamed everyone under the sun for his problems other than himself, Tug steps up and admits his mistakes. He says that he was not a good husband or father. He was determined not to make the same mistakes with his youngest son Matthew. His children all rallied around him as he battled brain cancer.

Sadly this story doesn't have a happy ending as Tug passes away in January of 2004, a month before this book was released. The final chapter of this book is very touching as Don Yaeger describes Tug's final days. This book shows that it's never too late to say you're sorry and it's never too late to make things right. An excellent book, highly recommended.

Wow! I'm not a baseball fan, or a Tug McGraw fan for that matter, but I read this book in a day. I love, love, love Tug's son Tim McGraw and it was amazing to read how Tug treated his children, Tim especially and they way Tim loved Tug so unconditionally-even paying for his medical bills, rent, furnishing a home for his father and spending hours on end just holding Tug's hand in Tug's final days. It makes me an even bigger fan of Tims. Tug's own childhood/family life was heartbreaking to read about, as well. The baseball parts were interesting, but not very exciting for me, as I am not a big fan of the sport, but baseball fans will definitely enjoy this book.
There are some great pictures in the book also.

Richard Munch has done a wonderful job writing this book about Harry Traver, a man most people have never heard of. However, true coaster/amusement park enthusiasts know how important his name is to the amusement park industry. The book contains a detailed personal and business history of Traver, with information gleaned from family and many other sources. It's hard to figure how the author did all of this, but the proof is within the covers of this outstanding book. Dozens of b/w photos of Traver's legendary coaster creations, complete with track layout plans and thorough descriptions, bring to life his contributions to the advancement of the wooden roller coaster. The book also contains photos of some of Traver's business papers and promotional materials. Munch also weaves into the text the relationship Traver had with the 1920's coaster team of Prior and Church, who are responsible for several historical coasters, including the still-operating San Diego "Giant Dipper". This book is like a trip through time. The only other book like it is Robert Cartmell's "The Incredible Scream Machine" which in itself is the most comprehensive book ever written on the subject of the history of roller coasters. If you're not too interested in coasters, then you'll find the book to be an interesting curiosity, but if you're an enthusiast, you'll love it.

So, before I begin my review of this product, here's our background... our son who is currently 6 weeks has had to be sent to the hospital with gas pains so severe that the emergency room doctors were concerned that he might be trying to pass a kidney stone. Turns out he was allergic to soy, we had tried breast, standard formula and lactose intolerance formula. He had a negative reaction to all (including breast believe it or not, I went through tests also to determine what was in my milk even though I was on a mild diet.... cause was deemed later on to be for a substance need, our baby needed rice formula). So..... we tried just the rice formula with the children's mylicon with the VentAire bottles.... somewhat of an improvement, but our child was still needing to go to the doctor weekly for checkups without much success, our pediatrician would even call us daily to see how he was doing. Constipation was questioned, but was never an issue. Our breakthrough occurred when we took our son to a specialist appointment and the lady asking us if our son had excess gas since she noticed that Mylicon was listed as one of his meds. I stated quickly yes and told her of our ordeal. I was told that she was the grandmother of 5 children and a mother of 3 and had tried EVERYTHING to cure their extreme colic. The remedy they found, Hyland's colic tablets, Dr. Brown's bottles, and rice formula. After the doctor appointment I went to the store to give these products a try....... and it was like an angel had spoken to us. Our child could breathe again and was longer tense in the body, as he was making progress against constantly trying to push. I know that I'm being candid but I am hoping that this will help other parents and children that have been or will be in our situation. We are on day 4 of the product switch and WOW, he's a brand new baby! If these products can help a child who's been hospitalized, hopefully these can help yours as well. Pedialyte also works as well to help calm the tummy. I've been using tylenol every 5 hours (excluding when he sleeps) for the first week and have been continuing to use the Mylicon to help with the surface gas. Burping has never been an issue, but his burps and toots have become louder and more productive, sometimes just shifting him in our arms can help him to expel gas! I'll be making this post in numerous areas in hopes to help people.

Hyland's colic tablets, Dr. Brown bottles, Enfamil AR Lipil, infant's tylenol, gas drops is literally our formula to success.

Great book with lots of infos

I purchased this book after my son was diagnosed with GERD at 7 weeks old. I read it within 2 days and couldn't believe how many struggles and obsticles Roni and her family had to go through to get little Shae-Lynn diagnosed. I was fortuned and only had to see 2 doctors until he got the help he needed.
The book is awesome and I was crying with all the things that they had to go through, on some I just nodded my head because my son was the same way. And on other things I just felt so sorry for them and was thankful that my son's GERD wasn't as bad.
I'm also glad that they wrote this book so the public can see what parents of children with GERD got through on a day to day basis. I hear a lot from family that spitting up is normal and that he'll outgrow it but don't get the support that I need. Just too bad that they don't have it in german so my family could read it too.
Thank you so much Roni for writing this book and all the infos I got from it.

I wish I never would have been able to relate to this book, but when my son was born with reflux, finding Roni's website and ultimately reading her story helped save my sanity and get better treatment for my son through education. My son is expected to be one of the "lucky ones" who will *outgrow* his GERD by his first birthday. If only Shae-Lynne could have had that good fortune. But, if you can attribute a "reason" to a child being subjected to such horrors FROM BIRTH INTO CHILDHOOD, it MUST be so that her amazing mother and grandmother would become motivated to share their story and hopefully help others in similar situations. Having a sick child is a very alienating experience and learning that you ARE NOT ALONE is priceless. I can't thank them enough for writing this inspirational, informative and heart-wrenching book. Now we just need to get more people educated about reflux/GERD (far more than "just heartburn") and find a CURE, so that there will never be another "Shae-Lynne Story".

This is a must read for anyone with a child suffering from GERD or for health professionals to understand the family componet. Ms MacLean puts a human voice on this terrible disease which is misdiagnosed many times with parents living in guilt and dispair trying to find help for their children. We assume all children will eat but those with GERD don't nescessarily. Its a 24/365 job trying to makesure your child will thrive. Thank you for putting your experience into words.

Roni and Jean have done an amazing job of telling their story and spreading the word about infant GERD. Your heart will ache for Shae-Lynn as she struggles to eat and grow, and you will triumph at the spirit of these women.

The book has wonderful information about GERD and is written is a way that even a tired parent can understand.

My son was diagnosed with reflux at 4 weeks of age and I found Roni's online community as I was searching for answers. I later purchased her book and am glad I did!

Most of us (including both men and women) just assume that we'll someday have a child of our own. The thought that our life partner, ourself, or both may not be able to naturally conceive a child once we decide to have a family doesn't really cross our minds. Unfortunately, this is the reality that many men and women must face.

Riding the Infertility Roller Coaster is written by an individual who has lived through the issues of infertility for both men and women trying to cope with their own situations. Three things really stood out for me within this book: the author's compassion, the wide variety of potential strategies set out for those facing infertility, and that the book actually took into consideration how men feel about these issues. That there are lots of viable alternatives and that couples can take control of their therapy and decision making process is empowering during an otherwise very daunting time. Moreover, bringing couples together in understanding at such a difficult time can only make the relationship stronger.

When I was undergoing fertility treatment with my first child, I didn't have a comprehensive resource to turn to for both the big, emotional issues, and the smaller, detail-oriented issues (like what to do with all the paperwork!) I could have really benefited from this book, and am glad it's now available for other women undergoing infertility treatment.

'Riding the Infertility Roller Coaster' is a book that speaks not only to those directly affected by infertility, but to those of us who have family members and friends going through the highly emotional experience of treatment, high expectations, and a less than guaranteed outcome.

I purchased this book for my Kindermusik class of 3 year olds. They thought it was so funny. The dad is the one encouraging the son to try the roller coaster, but by the end it is reversed. It's cute, no hidden agenda, just fun.

This is a simply marvelous book! It tells of the exciting adventure of a son and father taking a roller coaster ride together. It's lots of fun! Young children will enjoy the great rhymes, the descriptive verbs, and the colorful pictures. My son loves to have it read to him and requests it again and again and again. We've given it as a gift to a few of his friends and they enjoy it as much as he does. We hope that Diane Adams will write many more books!

This book is sooooo cute! I can relate to being afraid of rollercoasters as an adult and a child. The ending has a fun twist. This is an amusement park experience all kids and adults can identify with. You can tell that this story came from the authors very own experience.
