I bought this book on the strength of the authors name. It's a shame that his writing is not as strong as his music. Even for the period in which it was written, it is hard to read and much concentration required to ingest the information. That said, the information is there and goes from the basic intervals to complex chord structures, but most experienced composers/musicians would start reading at about two third into the book.

This is an interesting book, more interesting for giving an insight into the great Mr Tchaikovsky than studying harmony and for that I would buy it again. In my opinion, there are far better books on the subject.

I pulled this book out when things were degrading during our 3000+ mile road trip this summer. I chose a game, everyone played and had fun. The games are simple to learn, also indexed according to age group - which helped find an appropriate game quickly. When spending so much time in the car, you need many different "tools" to make it through. This is a great one!

Lots of activities

I've seen those ads for minivans with little monitors for passengers in the back seats to watch movies. Frankly, the idea of appals me! Don't our children also need a vacation from TV & movies? How much real life are they missing? How dull will our children's brains become, being force-fed with endless artificial stories?

"Are we there yet?" is a question rarely asked when you bring MILES OF SMILES along on your journeys. It is a good book for travellers, chock-a-block with things to do with eyes & brains. Thinking on the move, exercising the brain cells, learning to wrap the tongue around strange words, thinking inside the head, rather than passively, staring into space as someone else's ideas reel into the mind.

In my childhood, the only way we went on vacations was by family car. My mother was the driver, with my father navigating. To retain his sanity, he invented all sorts of brain teasing games. So, I was thrilled when I came upon Carole Terwilliger Meyers' handy little book MILES OF SMILES. It's perfect for a glove compartment or a seat pocket. I have, however, played many of these games with my kids on busses, trains, even 'planes.

MILES OF SMILES is a book that will let you think, use your brain, get to know your family. It has a whole slew of new games to play, which can be adapted to any age passengers. In the Introduction, Carole Terwilliger Meyers even gives parents a clue as to how to entice teenagers into the games.

Pick up a couple of copies of MILES OF SMILES - just in case you lose the first!

Better than the first two books in the series, Tom is once again the capable inventor
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-09
This book is a continuation of the first two in the series, "The City in the Stars" and "Terror On the Moons of Jupiter." In "Terror" Tom and his friends Anita Thorwald and Benjamin Walking Eagle and the intelligent robot Aristotle encountered an interstellar probe from the race called the Skree. The probe is called Aracta and it brings news of the existence of a drive mechanism which makes travel between the stars possible and a request for help in the Skree's battle with another race called the Chutans.
In this story, Aracta is stolen by the villain of the previous story and flown to the asteroid belt, where the evil David Luna takes control. Luna is a rich, powerful and ruthless tycoon who is the Swift Company's main rival. With the help of the quick-thinking Aristotle, Tom and his group are able to escape with Aracta. The story closes with a discussion of the structure of the star drive and the possibilities for aiding the Skree against the Chutans.
I found this book to be better than the first two; Tom is once more the capable inventor, which is the whole point of the series. Another improvement was that Tom's father only has an incidental role at the beginning; in the first two books he was too much of an imposing father figure, which tended to diminish Tom.

Great Series to Introduce Young Boys to Science Fiction
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-18
This particular incarnation of the Tom Swift series is a great place for young boys to discover science fiction. The stories are entertaining and do a good job of holding one's attention, plus the author attempts (with varied success) to weave in actual science here and there. I say the books are good for young boys because the protagonist is of course Tom Swift, and the format the adventure-story favored by many young boys, but the character Anita does offer a strong (but almost tomboyish) female role as well.

In the third story of the series, Tom must protect an alien space probe recovered from Io, one of Jupiter's moons, from theft while seeking to communicate with the artificial intelligence within. The story sets up the later works in the series as the probe helps Tom develop a hyperdrive and thus launch space exploration well beyond the moons of Jupiter.

A very real life gentle soft erotic book set in 1920's ....

Hilary Blair living in Paris discovers her husband, Walter, enjoying the sweetness of one of the many maids in their house. Although shocked at first her emotions go from disgust, to anger, to hate and then revenge. Although she never really goes through that agonizing introspection that many authors seem to beat to death, the readers sees the gentle transformation in Hilary's mind as we are seduced into acompaniying our heronie on her quest for revenge that unexpectedly turns into self discovery. Hilary really never jumps on that recriminatory roller coaster of emotion as she describes perfectly, with stunning clarity and simplicity, her sexual awakening with an ever increasing circle of friends and aquaintances. One can easily identify with the thoughts in Hilary's mind as she describes her hesitation, and nervousness while experiencing erotic and sexual trysts. For those that may have read my other reviews, this book does not have the hard hitting erotica that I generally enjoy, but, it's a wonderfull book equisitely written by a master and certainly should be calssified as a Blue Moon classic.

Compelled to become a voyeur, Hilary learns the extent of her husband's promiscuity and the private deviations of heterosexuals. Striving to exact revenge through infidelity, Hilary soon discovers seceret longings within. Through a series of sexualy submissive encounters, Hilary tries to assuage her guilt and satisfy her deepest desires. This well written erotic novel is my favorite by Daniel Vian.

Liked it as a kid

Review Date: 2007-01-20
I read this at the library when I was quite young-- had no idea it was out of print. I'm sure it's the same one from the brief description given here, though I thought the title was "THE Carousel Horse," not just "Carousel Horse." The story is told by Fran, a young girl who isn't very well off, as she meets and befriends Andrea, who is so rich she actually has a real, full-sized, painted wooden carousel horse in her perfect princess pink bedroom. Fran is envious of Andrea's wealth, but as you might expect, Andrea turns out to (I hope I'm not spoiling things for you here) envy Fran's loving though harried mother and her emotionally fulfilling home life, as contrasted with Andrea's material splendor and cold, stylish mother. Pretty standard stuff, but I really liked it as a kid. Too bad this is out of print, I'd like to read it again!

I started a co op using this book

Review Date: 2007-02-08
This book gave great advice on starting a co op and I decided to create one at my church. We currently have about 7 moms involved and there are lots of people who ask me about it. We are still in the beginning stages, and there are quite a few people who want to join once it has been in operation for a while. (I think they are waiting to see if it really "works" before trying it out) Though this book is outdated (written in the 70's) as far as prices for childcare, it has everything you would need to set up a co op. It's even easier these days with the internet. I was concerned about the idea of leaving my child with people I don't know really well, but if you follow the guidelines in the book, there are many ways to foster relationships with anyone in the co op and there is a set of rules and guidelines that really make everything safe. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to start a co op as it lays everything out for you.

Or that is the premises of this anthology edited by Waugh, Greenberg, and Asimov. This contains 12 stories, including:

** Hail and Farewell by Ray Bradbury
A sad little tale about someone who can't progress chronologically past 12 years old, and makes his living by making lonely people happy.
** Keep Out by Fredric Brown
Is a very nice story about the first Martians that has a fun, twist ending.
** What Friends are For by John Brunner
A timely tale about learning what it is to have a friend, even if that isn't always pleasant. Over all one of the best reads of the entire book
** The Wonder Horse by George Byram
When a wonder horse sweeps the racing world no one is prepared for what that could entail, even the horse's owners.
** He That Hath Wings by Edmond Hamilton
A young man born with wings must decide where his destiny truly lies.
** Second Sight by Alan E. Nourse
A sad story about a girl who has no control over her own life, yet has amazing psychic powers.
** I Can't Help Saying Goodbye by Ann Mackenzie
Sadness abounds when a girl who can see that it's time for people to die.
** The Listening Child by Idris Seabright
A deaf boy and a crippled man form a close bond that defies logic.
** The Children's Room by Raymond F Jones
When a father learns what his son's true destiny is, he must decide whether to help his son, or hold on to his boy at all costs.
** The Lost Language by David H. Keller, M.D.
A boy who speaks a language no one else can understand might be a last link to a past civilization.
** Prone by Mack Reynolds
A funny story about making due with what you have, and playing to your strengths.
** Come on, Wagon! by Zenna Henderson
Children have unlimited potential, which can have interesting results.

This is just a quick run down of the stories contained inside. Overall, a good, solid anthology that is well worth the money.

This short collection of 'mutant' stories is a book I did not expect to have a fond memory of, but it happened nonetheless.

Within its pages is a short story ©1938 by Edmond Hamilton, entitled "He That Hath Wings." It remains to this day one of my favorite short stories.

In it, a boy named David Rand is born with wings. He is raised on a private island owned by doctor Harriman, also his legal guardian. The years of growth are eloquently described in a few pages and you learn from David's perspective what it must be like to grow up with wings, and wonder why nobody else does.

As the story evolves, he escapes to the mainland and falls in love with a woman. He makes a huge sacrifice in order to keep his life normal, but the story ends with a twist; you shall have to read.

It's short and wonderful, highly emotional. If you can find a copy of this book and you're like me, you will love it for this one story alone.

Some information about the book: * Paperback ISBN 0-06-020156-8 or ISBN 0-694-05629-4 * ©1984 by Nightfall, Inc., Martin Greenberg, and Charles Waugh

A list of the short stories: * Introduction - Isaac Asimov * Hail and Farewell - Ray Bradbury * Keep Out - Fredric Brown * What Friends Are For - John Brunner * The Wonder Horse - George Byram * He That Hath Wings - Edmond Hamilton * Second Sight - Alan E. Nourse * I Can't Help Saying Goodbye - Ann Mackenzie * The Listening Child - Idris Seabright * The Children's Room - Raymond F. Jones * The Lost Language - David H. Keller, M.D. * Prone - Mack Reynolds * Come On, Wagon! - Zenna Henderson

And finally, a list of the themes of some of the stories, to pique your interest: * What would it be like if childhood lasted forever? * A horse that can fly - without leaving the ground. * A young girl with overwhelming psychic powers. * Predicting the future. * Telekinesis * Evolution sped up through science.

This book is quite charming. As reported in a previous review, the little package one receives is approximately 4" by 5". A pocket on one side contains six punch-out characters, a few punch-out items (incl. vases of flowers, pictures and a pitcher) to be placed in the rooms, and a 32-page booklet about Van Gogh and his paintings. The other side contains the pop-up book, which one opens completely so that the covers touch each other, thus making a carousel of a four-room house -- kitchen, bedroom, study and living room. You can change the pictures that are hanging or place a new work on the easel, etc.

This is a lovely item, obviously assembled by and for those who share an affection for this complex painter.

A fun way to learn!

This book is published in association with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands and the National Gallery in London. It is accompanied by a small booklet that tells the story of his life and features some of his many pictures. This is not your typical pop-up book since "Van Gogh's House" opens up into a circular four-room house. The furniture from his pictures have been transformed into 3-D pop-ups ("Van Gogh's Chair" for example). In order to bring his house to life one can play with punch-out figures that depict Van Gogh and his friends ("Joseph Roulin" for example). It is also up to you to decorate the house with Van Gogh's flowers ("Vase of Irises" for example) and his pictures. The book is approx. 4"x5" and folded out it becomes twice the size. For older children it is a unique and playful introduction to this great painter. I like it because it brings together my love for pop-up books and Van Gogh.

The flavor of the original, edited for little ones

When I went to introduce my preschooler to Winnie-the-Pooh, I bought the big book with the complete stories and poems. It didn't take long for me to figure out that it wasn't quite right for my 3-year-old. Reading a story out of the original works takes a good 15-20 minutes, which is more than one can really expect from a preschooler or toddler. Also, the original Pooh is a bit like Sesame Street, in that there are phrases and indeed entire sections of the stories that adults will find amusing but which will just go over a child's head.

And yet, I didn't want to break down and go the route of the Disney-fied Pooh books, with their cartoonish illustrations and watered-down plots and characters.

That's why I was so pleased to find the Easy-to-Read series. There are six easy-to-read titles from two publishers. They are:

Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees
Pooh Goes Visiting
Eeyore Has a Birthday
Tigger Comes to the Forest
Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition
Pooh Invents a New Game

Each book is based on one chapter from the complete works. These little books are divided into four chapters, although it should be no problem to read one from start to finish in one sitting.

The print is large and well spaced, and there are ample illustrations (the original drawings by E.H. Shepard) on every page spread to keep little eyes engaged in the story. Most important, the editor has removed most of the passages that aren't so kid friendly and has simplified the stories without giving them a Disney style candy coating. One could read the original story and then the easy-to-read version and get the same basic plot; when going from the Milne works to the Disney versions, the same is certainly not true.

I didn't give these books five stars because the editor retained some language and dialogue that may be a bit confusing for children in the intended age range. Nevertheless, these books are a wonderful introduction to a classic cast of characters for the preschool set.

Small book for younger readers/listeners

Beautifully bound and illustrated, this little book is part of a series of 10 such Pooh books published by Dutton. Don't confuse these "storybooks" with the even smaller and abridged board-books; also, don't confuse these books with many other Pooh books, such as read-alongs or cassete tapes or Disney versions.

This little book is a near-exact reproduction of a Chapter One in the original book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, with the original illustrations by Shephard enhanced by judicious watercoloring. All the charm of the original, in a perfect size for reading to littler kids, who can feel satisfied at having been read "the whole story." Also good for children just starting to read all by themselves.
