Best Science Book In A Long TimeReview Date: 2002-07-12
It is rare to find books on science written in such readable and understandable prose. It was quite a pleasure to read this book!
It is also my opinion that most authors of science related publications could learn something (and probably sell more books!) by observing Mr. Rubin's writing style.
A wonderful history of the Earth and the Solar SystemReview Date: 2002-08-24
Excellent First Book from Meteoriticist Dr. RubinReview Date: 2002-08-09
For me, I'd never made the connection that domesticatable animals might be a requirement for a technologically advanced civilization. And while I'd read a number of books (both fiction and non-fiction) suggesting that life might not have evolved if it weren't for our planet's large moon, I had not previously read that the Moon stabilizes the tilt of the earth's axis. I knew about the Moon's role in nutation of the earth's axis, but was not aware that French astronomers had recently performed a computer simulation of what would happen to the earth's axis over time if the Moon were absent. (Gravitational interaction between the planets and earth's equatorial bulge would cause the obliquity of the ecliptic to vary chaotically over relatively small time periods -- millions of years. Such unstable seasons would lead to extreme global climatic fluctuations, making it much more difficult for life to establish itself.)
As you might expect, there are many dozens of photographs, diagrams, graphs and illustrations scattered throughout. Indeed, this is the first book I've ever seen that contained pictures of the plaque aboard the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft, the pictogram sent out by the Arecibo dish back in 1974 toward M13, photographs of crater chains on Callisto and the Moon, and a table of all the magnetic pole reversals -- all in one place. It will make a nice reference book whenever I need to find something fast.
There is a fairly extensive 18-page glossary covering most of the technical terms in the book, and there are also 10 pages of chapter by chapter references for additional reading. Rubin obviously spent a lot of time putting all of this together.
Of course, in any technical book there are bound to be typos and errors, though I found very few. Page 94, for instance, has a confusing phrase "...gravitational resonance between the Moon and the debris disk..." I believe he meant ~earth~ and the debris disk. The most glaring mistake I found is that Figure 11.2 on pg. 164 is misidentified as being a partial eclipse of the earth when it is merely a crescent earth. There are a couple of minor errors in the glossary -- see if you can spot the problems with the definitions of arcsecond and parsec.
Overall, the book is well-written in plain English that you don't need a PhD is astrodynamics to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to expand their appreciation of just how fortunate we are to be alive on this little blue ball.

at a fraction of the cost. In Romancing on the Bay Of Fundy, Donnas' writing captures the bay area as an all inclusive retreat awaiting your traveling soul.
"Why does this ocean chill my hand
and escape through my fingers wide,
yet, still warm deep within my core
with each wave of its flowing tide?"
Take a walk on the beach with Donna as she shares her experience
with the ocean's tranquility.
"The aroma of the warm sultry air
drifts through her lengthy hair,
mingled with the sea's moist spray
such a lovingly gentle bouquet."
When your sense of adventure comes to play. Go on a treasure hunt in the bay. Is the treasure heart or fortune? It's up to you to decide while searching for the meaning
of
"X marks the spot on secret maps
where treasure is hidden in a chest,
buried deeply for no eyes to see,
thus, is the reason for our quest."
After a day at the beach and treasures unfold. Listen to the music the bay
sings to you in many verse such as
"The music of Nova Scotia
fills your heart and soul,
Scottish, Celtic, Irish dance,
ballads of a traditional whole.
Songs of lovers lost at sea
as lyrics are sang to meter,
with the beat of the drum
we dance, drink and teeter."
Tempt your palette with a treat from the forests all around, and
learn how nature quells our sweet tooth.
"Springtime turns to a sweet time
as the maples are soon on tap
this natural golden nectar grown
produces goodies from its sap.
This sap must be prepared just so
to create a treasured butter,
try some on your favorite bread
it will begin your senses aflutter."
When the music is over and sweets are gone, settle around the fire for tales of old
As Told like these
"Their affection for one another
lasted throughout her days,
till their souls ultimate greet
toward their eternal phase.
Tales like these are often heard
of the ghost and his lady love,
both bound to last eternally
and what true love is capable of."
``````````
"Now that you have been warned, there'll be no need to be scorned,
or even worry about mourned, unless it is she you must obsess.
Just keep in mind if you dare, of this forewarning and beware,
should you walk in the forest do prepare, and see her, send a signal of distress.
But if caught by her attention and you happen to be reckless,
you will surely be in an unholy mess."
Let the ocean inspire your day, take on a treasure quest, live life through tales and music while sweetening your heart. And at the end of your travels share your soul with the one you love, let them know they are your world- in poems like this
"You fulfill my days with love so true
and my nights with passion for just us two.
You touch my very soul deep within me
bring out the purest emotions; can't you see?"
Donna shares her world with us in Romancing on The Bay of Fundy. A must read on a quiet night when you can allow yourself to hear the seagulls and the waves crash the shore, to feel the mist upon your face and share it all with the one you love.
Wonderful Book of PoetryReview Date: 2006-06-02
Romacing on the Bay of Fundy is just what it says it is. It is romantic thoughts and illusions of her favorite places, things and people. There are great poems here that
describe so vividly the nature around the bay, the seasons, the animals, the points of interest and the folklore of the area.
The poetry reminds me of poetry written by a nineteenth century poet and really does put you in those places she poetically describes. I loved the four seasons poems, one for each season that is colorful and so explanatory. I loved Sweet Maple Sugar. There were so many that I loved.
She has her own artwork which only adds to the talented demensions to this lady. She moved to Parrsboro a few years ago and undoubtedly fell in love with the area completely. Every Parrsboro resident should own a copy of Donna's book for she captures the town and it's essence.
A beautiful read and I highly recommend it to everyone.
Think and Grow Rich is Perfect TitleReview Date: 2008-07-08
The single way of life in a capitalist societyReview Date: 2008-02-09
Many people came to a conclusion that the wealth, in some extent, depends on a level of education, motivation, self-esteem, and so on. The problem is that not all the people in equal extend incline to the education, to their self-improvement. This is because of the differences of their needs, habits, abilities, capabilities, and so on. Leo Tolstoy in his novel "Resurrection" arose a question of how to improve the level of education within a society: from inside of each individual or from outside? Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Should first the level of education of each and every individual be risen which yields a revolution (dialectic transition of quantity into quality) or the revolution should make the environment to foster the education of every individual?
The traits advocated by Napoleon Hill correspond to the first Leo Tolstoy's way of improving society. If each and every individual will improve, the society will automatically improve. The second way of Leo Tolstoy (create the environment which will foster the education of every individual) is contrary to Napoleon Hill's ideas: "if something is got for free or without big effort, it won't be appreciated, won't be handled with care or you won't trust it". Free education and medical care won't be respected properly by people, regardless how good this education and medical care are. That's why the socialist society will develop slower than capitalist. Marxists knew this and have built the concept of World revolution (to overthrow of capitalism in all countries), and a further idea by Trotsky that it was impossible to build socialism in a single country. Trotsky wrote that the socialist economy is not as efficient as capitalist and without the World revolution the USSR won't be able to overcome its economic underperformance.
Napoleon Hill praises the freedom and opportunities of the capitalist society of the U.S. in particular, which gives, according to Napoleon Hill, boundless opportunities for an individual who is able to think and grow rich.
I also recommend "The Road to Serfdom" by F. A. Hayek in addition to this book. Although "Think and Grow Rich" is a classical self-help book for a general reader while "The Road to Serfdom" is mostly academic, I think that both of them should be read.
The Matrix....Review Date: 2007-12-27
Words are energy and energy effects matter. Your words you speak every day is shaping and forming and effecting the matter around you. By the end of this book, you will affect the matter around you just as intense as a microwave effects water; energy affecting matter.
There is so much more going on in the realm of the invisible than there is in the visible realm. There are more "things" in the antimatter world than in this physical world of matter than we can perceive. God has given us the ability to operate in this realm or kingdom.
There are things in God and in this world that we know not of. There are limitations set by humanity that must be unveiled in order to progress in all aspects of your life. Everything that is created in this physical kingdom was first existing or made in the spiritual realm.
The Matrix. Have you seen it?
Your life and the world you live in is much more like the matrix than you imagine (no pun intended!) What if this earth, the people on it, the events that we perceive to be real, and even our feelings were nothing more than an immense hologram? If everything that is, was, and is to be; and if God knew you before the foundations of time itself, could that indicate that you were created before you were here?
"Everything is in the mind. That's where it all starts. Knowing what you want is the first step toward getting it." (Mae West)
What we perceive as reality is only a canvas waiting for us to draw upon it any picture we want. Anything is possible!
"People with goals succeed because they know where they're going...it's as simple as that." (Earl Nightingale)
In order for you to get what you want in life, you must have a clear vision of what you want, where you want to go, what or who you want to be
In the book, Unleash Your Vision, You will learn how to uncover a plan and goal for your life that was designed especially for you even before you were born! Learn how to take that plan, which is already a deep desire inside you and manifest it into reality!
A lot of theory is covered in the book, but more importantly, practical solutions and techniques are also given, as well as some step-by-step solutions, for those that need them.
I really think this book is destined to become a self help classic.
