"Tough Guy" Grows Up

Review Date: 2002-01-28
This is a heartfelt account of one man's struggle to overcome the archetpe of the "tough guy" and to soften into a realization of the power of love. R. Glendon Brunk, who could be one of the men in Pam Houston's "Cowboys are my Weakness" , shares his life with us in an engaging way -- sometimes sad, often funny, always keeping my attention. I wish that every man I know, from my brother and my father, to my cousins, to all my male friends would read it, too. Our world needs to find a new way, a way that isn't hung up onto the patriarchal ways of domination, the raw male energy that , undirected, may turn so quickly to violence and destruction. And here's a guy who was one of the toughest (he admits that that was the way he thought he should be) who openly shares his journey to become open and loving - therefore ultimately stronger. This is a great book about gender issues. Men and women alike should read it, discuss it, let it inspire new paths, and greater connected-ness with eachother and the world around us.

Glendon's down-to-earth writing style and his epic adventure story make this book an addictive page turner. Included is everything from running world class dog teams across the icy tundra, to sipping Kava in the South Pacific. Read it for yourself and find out what draws a man to Alaska.

Yearning Wild: Exploring The Last Frontier and the Landscape
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-06
What an honest and brave guy to write this book. Glendon Brunk, one of those ultra-manly men, writes so honestly about what it means to be a man in a world dominated by men, and how, through the amalgamating forces of pain and growing self-awareness, came to see a different way. It's a book set in Alaska, with all the raw power of conquering the wilderness and living wild, with facing grizzly bears and extreme cold, but it's really not about Alaska. It's about growth and coming into consciousness. It's about driving sled dogs competively and coming to realize that winning the world championship of sled dog racing - a feat akin to any great athletic endeavor - was empty. It was because of a single-minded obsession to win, to conquer, to be the best, to control, all the manly perceptions that have the world in so much trouble today. Yearning Wild is about one man coming to see his responsibility for wounding, not only himself, but women and children and the land. It's about awakening. This book is a brave beginning, and it needs to be out there. I - a man - would encourage every man, every woman to buy it and to pass it on. Because it's one of those books that's desparately needed for the times we live in. Do it, please.

Davy Crockett Meets H. D. Thoreau
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-28
Here's a book with the romanticism of Davy Crockett, weather the likes of A Perfect Storm, herds of caribou familiar through Never Cry Wolf, and a cast of sled dogs paling Lassie, Old Yeller, Sounder, and Where the Red Fern Grows.
It's a book for children because of the raw adventure: watch our protagonist shoot a bear that's about to knock down his cabin door and eat his baby daughter (and then watch him leave, tossing his wife butchering instructions). Hear him call "Trail" as he and his sixteen world champions pass the favored dog team and head into Fairbanks and the crowd's cheers.
It's a book for women because its central figure is the stuff of endless heartbreak: a doer, a pacifist, a romantic, a man with a guitar and songs and dreams as big as all outdoors, a man whose restlessness is the stuff (in women's eyes) of pathology. This man from Mars retreats not just to his cave; he moves to Fiji, to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Guatemala, Mexico, and Africa.
It's a book for men because this writer lived most men's dreams. Brunk's woods were not Thoreau-sized; his peace required the presence of Alaskan wildlife which had never before seen a human.
He yearned really wild, and, as Mary Renault says, "Longing performs all things." R. Glendon Brunk performed.
It almost killed him. The real gifts in this amazing book are Brunk's courageous candor in addressing the essential emptiness he found once he realized his dreams. He does not flinch in the face of his paradoxes: he admits, for example - acknowledging a tension that must exist among almost all men -- that having a child was not in his dream. But this is a healing book. The adventure stories are only preliminary to Brunk's more central journey here: the one inward and the one backwards: back to the courage it takes to stay.
Read this book. Give it to your husband, your son, your son's teacher, your ex-husband, your boss, your mailperson. This is a great book.

This book is what I was hoping for. It explains how to work on Mobile Homes, including older models such as my 1965 Flamingo. It explains, for example, the difference between how a mobile home door hinges are installed, versus those in a normal home. I'm having doors replaced and was wondering why the exterior doors are so oddly attached. It also goes into great detail about methods of insulation, which I have to do, and tells which parts of the trailer (floor vs walls vs ceiling) receive the most benefit from insulation. Also, doing construction on a mobile home, such as changing out old windows, is something I have to face. Most carpenters I've spoken to have had doubts about how to go about this, and this book details out what they can expect.

There are plenty of illustrations too. I'm really glad I bought the book. It will be an often-used resource.

Excellent book covering all aspects of mobile home ownership. I purchased an old mobile home for storage use. The book lists by chapter the materials needed by name, description, with complete detailed description with photos on how to complete repairs. I plan to do repairs on the roof, floor, walls, and insulation myself. I am woman 68 years old with basic cut and hammer skills and on a limited budget. The directions, tips, and step-by-step instructions are very informative. I now know what to fix first, how to do it, and what I need to complete the repairs. The tips are very useful, and I will use them. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!! Barbara J Brown, Stilwell,OK

This book is great!

These are hard times, and the one place I could afford, call home sweet home, and save money with was a mobile home. My place is great, but it's 20 years old and needs major and minor remodeling. It also needs a tie-down and this book/author gave such a simple and thorough description and illustrations of what that involves. Thanks!!!! Now I know how to talk to contractors and make sense.

By the way, I am a middle aged female and this book answers so many of my questions. Get this if you want to repair, buy, whatever, a mobile home! Thanks : )

I am very impressed with this volume. I am needing skills to inspect older mobile homes and get beyond the knee-jerk reaction that they are old and ugly. Mr. Krigger's expertise with this kind of housing and respect for it is extremely useful as a place to start. Then he takes the reader through all the component portions of the housing--how it was build, what its common weaknesses are and how to look for problems--before going through how to address the issues and make the repairs. I am finding this approach very useful in acquiring the new skills I need in moving from stick built to this type of housing.

Jim Burns and Mike DeVries team together to write The Youth Builder, detailing the logistics and heart behind creating an effective and fulfilling youth ministry. One statement in particular touched my heart: "True ministry comes from the overflow of our passion and love relationship with Jesus, not from the overflow of our knowledge of youth ministry." With this philosophy on youth ministry running throughout the book, Burns and DeVries draw on their own experiences as well as knowledge of youth and programming to outline the various tasks that await successful youth ministers.
Dividing their book in four sections-foundation, framework, programming and personal relationships-Burns and DeVries reminds the youth worker of the import of a clear vision, and underlying this, the heart and attitude essential for a vibrant ministry. Still, they also acknowledge the need for good budgeting, preparation, attention to logistical details, a support staff and raising new leadership.
This book was an amazing read for me because it pinned all the essentials for a dynamic youth ministry. The sermon ideas were creative, the grounding of youth ministry in good organization was pragmatic and realistic and yet Burns and DeVries' emphasize the key need for passionate and genuine heart and spirit behind any ministry. While the reader learns essential tips to build a successful youth ministry, authenticity and genuine care and concern to bring youth to God is never forgotten and is constantly brought to the fore. It is no wonder the book is in its 4th printing. Though first written in 1973 the book is indeed timeless.

Not too many books hold my attention the way "The Youth Builders" does, which I couldn't help but finish it in a matter of days. It is definitely a Youth Ministry "textbook" that can be referred to time and again! Not that all the points mentioned will work for all youth ministries, but many are basic starting points in which each ministry can start upon - definitely a must read for foundation building.

Zeus: The Avenger by Reginald Beal is an intriguing story about Rick Champion and his plight to find out who killed Martin Luther King Jr. Rick is an employee of IBM and along with two of his best friends, Rick, they set out to start their own company and avenge the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Rick is a well-versed black man who will stop at nothing to prove that he is right, has special powers and believes in astrology. Stumbling across Angela Bourne, an astrologer, who taps into his psychic, Rick, is ready to take the bull by the horns. Angela opens Rick to the possibilities that he can turn his life around, and be able to foresee the future.

With guided stealth, Rick and his fellow partners embark on a ride of their lives that they will never forget. While a start-up company is always hard to keep above ground, these guys are faced with being black-balled, sued for millions, reputations tarnished and fighting for the freedom to belong. Heart-felt and emotional, the characters are realistically portrayed and believable even in this day and age. Can Rick hide behind his astrological profile of Zeus: The Avenger, or will he become the powerful Victor he commands to be? After thirty years of seeking justice for Dr. King's murder, will Rick forgo vengeance?

This book is filled with social and economic issues, as well as daily prejudices and belonging. Mr. Beal approached a touchy subject with this book, and left me wanting to know more. This book has a little bit for everyone, science-fiction, astrology, history, and mystery. I recommend this book to readers of all genres. And I look forward to Mr. Beals' next book.

This book is the only one I came across that explains major internet job sites and what type of information they can provide. If one is a high school student, college student, or career changer, there is a list of the sites that offer free personality tests that can determine the best jobs out there for the individual. For people who know what jobs they are seeking there is a comprehensive list of web sites offering job openings as well as networking organizations and headhunters. Once you find the job you are interested in there ia a list of web site that will help you determine reputation of the company you are applying to and how well financially they are doing. In addition, you will find tips on interview techniques and writing cover letters as well as references on salary negotiation. Quick read, well worth anyone's time.

Every business leader or human resource executive can learn more about how the top companies reward their CEOs and other top executives. If they don't, they clearly should. And Pay toWin can help accelerate this learning process. James Reda and James McMahon, as expert analysts of how people are paid, provide us with an in-depth analysis of how the executives in the top-performing companies in America are paid.

This book slices and dices the total compensation of executives in such brand name companies as GE, Oracle, Sun, Wal-Mart, and Enron, to provide you with guidance and solid benchmarking information you can immediately apply to the situation in your company.

Reda and McMahon study everything from the written executive compensation strategies of these companies, to how they pay in terms of base pay, incentives, and equity compensation, and provide actual proxy analysis about what is going on in American's elite companies. They provide a computer disk that you can use to do your own analysis of the information-this is an important tool you can put to work with your executive team. But this book is more than just a compilation of practice information-the authors provide analysis and commentary about what typifies the top-performers and suggest how you might add value to your business from taking their expert advice.

Each company in the study is summarized in terms of the elements of compensation, the composition of their board compensation committee, how they target total compensation and the market, and how they measures executive performance at the organizational and individual executive level. so, ben franklin once said "motivation is when your dreams put on work clothes" and for any musician trying to DIT ("do it themselves") the atlas is a fantastic resource (and those work clothes). it's super up-to-date and easy to navigate. i also saw an ad in it for the updated atlasonline, signed up for an account, and now i'm hooked. it's like google for the industry.

I've tried other directories in the past, nothing comes close! The Atlas is by far the most comprehensive directory out there. The breakdown of categories and regions makes listings easy to find. Last year, we lost a gig in Chicago and I was able to make a couple quick calls and rebook at another club locally. It was amazing! No wasted time, money or effort!
Every musician needs the Atlas...I just started using the AtlasOnline this year too! Blast emails to press, tracking radio airplay, you name it they've got it in there.

I would recommend this resource to anyone in this ever changing industry!

The Absolute Best Music Contact Reference!!!

I've set up an entire 5 month tour across the US using this book. With how fast the music industry is changing nowadays, I make sure to get the latest edition each year to stay on the ball. Unlike other contact directories, the Atlas gives you all the important info (and then some) and is highly accurate. I used to waste so much time searching around the internet only to run into closed clubs and businesses or wrong numbers. They also have contacts for radio stations, labels (if you're into that), promotional companies, record stores,... basically, you name it! Love the new cover, too! This is a must if you're in the industry.

This book is a must have for anyone working in the music business, whether you're "in the band" or working with or for the band, etc.
I have successfully found the people who are now working to make my dreams a reality. I've found my manager, label, etc. Awesome information and worth every penny.
