Cherri's book is well organized and provides all the basics needed to start researching your ancestors online. I spent a couple of hours with her book and my computer and was quite happy with the positive results I received in such a short amount of time. I was able to successfully research my great-grandmother's ancestors all the way back to the 1600's! It's a great book, easy to use and full of helpful tips.

Genealogy Basics Online is an essential, core, "how to" reference title for personal and professional genealogy reference collections and training course reading lists.

I have always been interested in knowing where my ancestors came from. Before she died, my best source for family information was my grandmother. I bought Cherri Flinn's book and was able to trace my family back to 1589 in about 20 minutes! Her book has so many neat sources of information. I would highly recommend this as a reference book for anyone interested in genealogy research.

When I opened Cherri Flinn's book Genealogy Basics Online, I expected to find a well written, "how-to" book for the beginner or intermediate family historian. What I found instead, was a marvelous written book that should prove helpful to any family historian from beginner to seasoned veteran.

By her own admission, what sets this book apart is its simplicity. Genealogy Basics Online does gently guide the reader through the Internet and provides all the tools necessary for helping anyone succeed in finding family history information on the Internet.

I have been doing family history for twenty years and have used the Internet for the better part of the last ten years, yet I found something I could use the very first time I opened the book.

Cherri suggests "Keep this book by your computerand and refer to it often." How true. What she could have said was, "This may be the only "how-to" book you will ever need while working on Genealogy Online.

A wonderful book.

Read "The Retirement Nightmare" by Dr. Diane Armstrong. Get the real truth about the fraud and abuse of the elderly and not so elderly. To avoid a guardianship in the State of Florida, and other states, should be of paramount importance. Reports of guardians stealing from their wards' bank accounts and other wise abusing guardianship powers are surfacing with disturbing regularity. 'This problem is going to get bigger and bigger,' says E. Bentley Lipscomb, AARP's Florida state director and a former state secretary of elder affairs. - GUARDIANS DRAWING INCREASED SCRUTINY, AARP Bulletin.

some good ideas

Review Date: 2008-06-14
I purchased this book for my wife and I in order to get some ideas about anniversary celebrations. There are some good ideas (though I really think many of the party ideas are way too 'hokey').

The gift ideas for the various anniversaries are good (and easier for me to find than sifting through a bunch of internet sites trying to sell items when you perform an 'anniversary gift' search). I also like the book as a quick reference for 'what anniversary gift options go with what anniversary'...wood, iron, rock, paper, scissors, etc). The book does a nice job of describing the 'traditional' vs. 'modern' gift selections with some nice suggestions. I reference the book a few times a year for various reasons...overall pleased with the purchase.

Not only is this book interesting with the history behind each symbolic anniversary gift, but it's like reading a self-help book to rekindle romance between couples. The book actually flows like a novel and lights a little spark to help make thoughts move to excitement and fun instead of just staying in a comfort mode with one's day to day routine. My husband and I went on a cruise 2 years ago and reading the menu for "The Titanic" theme brought back wonderful memories of that very special experience. It's a "must read" for planning special anniversary fun or for interesting and informative pleasure reading.

I was recently faced with the challenge of finding a special way to celebrate my grandparents' fiftieth wedding anniversary, while still honoring their request of no gifts. So, I set out to the Internet and happily discovered Ms.Kring's Happy Anniversary!

I was immediately taken with the effortless and engaging writing and found the book a joy to read. A particularly interesting aspect of the book was the explanations of anniversary traditions and etiquette. Ms. Kring offers the reader numerous creative and charming ideas for planning clever theme parties that are bound to be the backdrop to cherished memories.

Thanks to Happy Anniversary! I was able to give my grandparents a token of my love without cluttering their closets. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thoughtful, imaginative, and memorable way to celebrate any momentous occasion.

The definitive guide to alternative healing centers.

Review Date: 1998-11-21
It's been a long time coming but my search is finally over. I have been waiting for a book of this type to come along since I was first diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Finding contemporary medicine unable to treat the pains I suffer, I soon began seeking "alternative" medicine. I was shocked to find so little information available and it soon became a struggle to combine work and healing on my very frequent business travels. Now with Ms. Miller's book always tucked away at my desk I am sure to find a center to fill my needs. I find her guide to be accurate, concise and interesting. Her descriptive style entices me to try new places and new treatments. I wish this book had been written five years ago, it sure would have saved me a lot of time, trouble and headaches. I seriously recommend this book as a must for travel agencies with clientele looking for "alternative" vacations. They and their clients will not be disappointed.

Sensational! Very informative.

Review Date: 2003-04-15
This book is charged-- a direct transmission of heart and soul, light and life from Pir Vilayat Khan. Pir Vilayat is the son of the great Sufi Master Hazrat Inayat Khan and pioneer of liberated spirituality within the US and Europe since the 1960's offers his magnum opus. The work, beautifully illustrated with inspired drawings by Mary Inayat Khan along many sacred paintings and images of the East, is a vibrant dialogue among ancient and modern Sufi masters, inquirers and students. It filled my being and will fill yours with the antidote to the delusion of our modern existence and of conventionally defined models of Reality.

A masterpiece

Review Date: 2006-11-14
This book is a creative dialogue between Sufi masters throughout the ages, taking place in the sacred atmosphere of the divine unity of the spiritual hierarchy. As other reviewers have noted, it is beautifully illustrated, and the feeling running through it is one of both crystalline intelligence and unbounded joy.
You cannot help but catch the spark by reading these pages. I recommend it to all whose hearts long for the indescribable bliss of union with the One Being.

The one qualm I have with the book is the first sentence of the dust jacket's inner flap, which reads: "Sufism is the mystical dimension of Islam, and represents both a vision and a spiritual path that exists on the periphery of the main religion, yet at the same time embodies its deepest truth." This statement is strikingly at odds with the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan's father and teacher, who described Sufism as the essence of all religions, yet belonging to none. Khan argues Sufism is to Islam as green is to Ireland -- the color has become associated with the country, yet it would be silly to suggest that there was no green before there was Ireland.

What masterpiece could exist that does not contain one exquisite flaw?

I suggest reading this book as a form of contemplation. Any student of spirituality will find benefit in its pages.

This book is very helpful when giving information about Clinical Psych Doctoral Programs. It lists every school and their stats. There are also the websites for each school so you can go there and find more information on your own. I liked having all the programs in one place so that I could organize myself and choose a school for myself. There are also very helpful tips on how to to apply and what to do regarding the application process. There is also a helpful timeline which tells you what part of the application process you should be on.

As a university lecturer at three universities, I get plenty of questions about these things. I hear plenty of horror stories from students about faulty or non-existent mentoring in these areas. There is plenty of advice out there to be had from ignorant, indifferent, or hostile sources. A big problem is that many professors and staff in psychology departments at major universities don't have knowledge or interest in clinical and counseling psychology. They may be openly hostile to the entire field, or toward areas and programs they perceive as being too unscientific. Even among supportive mentors, there isn't enough time to mentor students on all these issues. For many professors, finding quality time with students sucks time from writing papers and chasing grants. Your best bet is to use this book to master the basics. Find a great mentor and use that person's time to fine tune your thinking and turbo-charge your applications.

My advice is to start here if you are serious about getting into grad school. Or, take a look at the APA's book, "Getting In", which is on the same topic. I don't care for the APA books as much as the insider's guide, but your mileage may vary. Also, you can probably get a copy of the 2006/07 guide for almost nothing. The earlier version contains good general information and *almost* up to date info.

And if you want your life as a grad student to go well at at the Big U, then make sure to consult the following classics: (Do this even if you aren't considering an academic career)

David Sternberg's "How to Complete and Survive a Dissertation."
Robert Sternberg's "Psychology 101 1/2: The Unspoken Rules for Success in Academia"

Another must read, for future academics:
Darley et al's "The Compleat Academic: A Career Guide"

And for future clinical and counseling psychologists:
Yalom's "The Gift of Therapy: An Open Letter to a New Generation of Therapists and Their Patients"

Get these other books. Do it. This stuff is worth its weight in gold.

Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology: 2008/2009 Edition is an updated edition of the practical guide for those who are considering pursuing graduate level degrees in clinical or counseling psychology. The book has current data on more than 300 accredited programs in the United States and Canada. At 387 pages, it is rather short as compared to the Graduate Study in Psychology by the American Psychological Association. I found the book to be informative, and the worksheets and timeline in the appendixes are helpful.

If you're choosing between Insider's Guide and Graduate Study in Psychology, the Graduate Study in Psychology is the better book. Both books are handy and having both at hand is a plus.
