Not for everybody, be forewarned. If you have seen Terry's work before and find yourself craving a high dosage of trashy, sexually explicit and raw photography, this ones for you babe. Suck it in, and puke it up into the air while laying on your back, and let your own metaphorical vomit shower your filthy nude inner workings.

HONEST, ENERGETIC, though totally unappetizing content sometimes, ALMOST PERFECT PHOTO COMPOSITION, winning other 'trend following' artist (Jergen Teller for example) by a mile! Somehow i've got a gut feeling mr richardson is going to be the picasso of this century.....a classic already!

i pretty much knew what the book was like since i'd seen it in bookstores several times. i always concluded that is not for me, but time after time i kept going back to it and kept seeing Terry's photos in magazines and so finally i got it.

the book then...it's huge, with a LOT of photos. i'm still not a fan of Terry but i respect his style and originality and bravery a lot. he uses a snapshot cam, and it shows. that sounds bad...and most people think upon seeing the pics 'these are snapshots! i can do this myself!'. well, think twice, it is not in fact that easy. Terry can handle the medium in a whole different way and as a photographer myself i appreciate this skill. his subject matters are however what usually turns peoples heads...the genitalia shows here and there, and it's not subtle. Terry is a part of the photos himself too sometimes, and he shows he's ready to give just as much as himself as the models. what i like specifically is the humor and brave subjects, daring to show things in a new or different way. or just really bluntly.

more specifically his photos are of people, often naked and daring, posed or dressed funny. some are celebrities, others are not. the snapshot camera gives the photos a blunt 'in your face'-look and i don't think the photos are in any way manipulated, at least they look very raw and like something from a snapshot camera should. his website shoulf give you a better idea of the content.

besides the photos, i think this book is worth having because it's a part of photography history, different and i'm sure he will be remembered as such.

Terror-World!

Terry's world might be, hell, it's MEANT to be a little scary for alot of people! Not in the sense of depicting violence or even real depravity but rather in the near-apocalypitc vulgarity with which it depicts post modern-hedonism, where sexual pleasure is about as idealized as a Tijuana donkey-show.

A man, laying half-passed-out on a bed, is seen puking, Terry (who appears in many of his own photos) pulls a tampon string out of a woman's vagina with his teeth, a guy pisses into his own mouth--you get the picture. It's a garbage-world where all the turn-ons are trashy. It is strangely arousing inspite of the yuck factor, but whether that's because it's sexy or because I'm just so jaded I'm happy for anything that can jolt and shock my deadened nerves, is up for debate!

Jolts and shocks are what Terryworld is all about. Terryworld is to erotica what Hustler was to Playboy. It's flat-out raunch, but with a fashion photographer's sensibility, which is to say that it does have some artistic merit beyond its novelty value, calling to mind the "provacateur" advertising campaigns of recent years, of which Terry himself has often played a part. His situation-heavy portraits are Tarantino-like movie stills from a movie I'm not sure I want to see.

Which brings me to my point; In the end, after all the money's come in, all the heads have turned and all the word-of-mouth has been exhausted, what is the final value of shock?

Remember when you were fourteen and looking at your stolen copy of Hustler, you felt kind of sick at the end of the ride. Your heart rate increased as you turned each page, your curiosity peaked to see the next lurid spectacle, you flipped faster and faster until finally it was over, you'd seen the whole thing--More, in fact, than your mind was capable of processing in one sitting. You were late for dinner, had a pressure headache, and a faint desire to go to church.

Welcome to Terryworld.

Words cannot even begin to describe the beauty of the works of art contained in this book. If you only ever buy one book in your life to just look at the pictures let it be this one. I could sit entranced by this embroidery for hours. I agree with another reviewer who stated that you can't conceive of this art being created by human hands. If you need proof simply look at the cover. That is not a photograph folks, it is embroidered.
The photographs are also quite beatiful. Consider as you look at them that the photo's are trying to capture texture...something very elusive in that medium. In many cases you can barely tell the photo from the embroidery and in others the embroidery is an interpretation of the photo.
I cannot state this enough... this book is truly, truly extraordinary and I don't think that there is anything else like it out there.

This is, by far, the most beautiful embroidery book I've ever seen anywhere, at any time. It seems impossible that such impressive works of art could have been created. Robert Ketchum's photographs are beautiful, but the embroideries are, indeed, so breathtaking that it's hard to believe real human beings could have worked on them. This is the kind of embroidery I would love to be able to do, but it is so amazing that I know I'll never reach such a high level of expertise (at least not in this lifetime). My thanks to all the people involved in this project for sharing their special gifts with me and anyone else fortunate enough to have purchased this book or, better still, to have seen these works in person.

I bought this book, sight unseen purely from the rave reviews listed. To be honest I was a bit disappointed with the book. Firstly, Robert Glenn Ketchum's photographs are very average. In fact any 15 year old with a good camera and decent eye could take photo's of this quality. The thing that redeems them is the skill of the needleworkers. Secondly, I just think the book is overated. There's several western needlework books that cover this type of embroidery and have better images in my opinion so I just don't understand the rave. An interesting read, but..........yeah. I wouldn't have paid this much if I'd been able to flick through it first.

I'm not all that interested in embroidery, but I enjoy visual excitement. One day while gallery hopping, we came upon a small portion of the work depicted in this book. We were both blown away by the work! Absolutely amazing. I would really like some posters of this work.

For those interested in the embroidery details, it is done with fine silk threads, hand dyed, on various fine fabrics, some of which are so fine you can see through them. Much of the interesting texture and effect is from what they call random stitch embroidery, in which the scenes are depicted by various colored stitches .5 cm (1/4 inch) long running in various random directions, yet they all come together to make the image. Other parts of the images are done by carefully controlled stitch direction to give crisp images. They pick up the light and are quite luminous, some are displayed as screens with light coming from behind. Only the enlargements in the book give a sense of the beauty and amazing technique of the actual pieces.

Oh, and the book is good too. Definitely a 5 star quality coverage of the work, with background information, as described in other reviews. But the work itself is beyond 5 stars. (In the gallery they were priced around the $10,000-$150,000 range, some took several years to complete.)

Weinberg's photography is beautiful: gritty and linear and simultaneously glossy and sensual--like the city he has depicted. But what I find most interesting is that his photographs of refelections on buildings have caused me to look for similar images, colors and reflections as I travel about. I'm seeing some of Chicago in a new and exciting way.

Mr. Weinberg has unchained the camera from the rigidity of classic architectual photography. His photographs of high rise buildings and the images that the reflections present has opened my eyes and enabled me to see structures in a new and magical way. The artist has taken steel, concrete and glass and transformed them into abstract art forms. Bravo, Dave Weinberg.

I am not usually a big fan of photo books but when I started flipping through this book at a friend's house, I couldn't put it down! The images are surreal and imaginative, to the point that the photographs seem to be of hand crafted jewelry or nature, not just of concrete, steel and stone. I ended up buying the book myself and even bought a second copy to give as a gift! Definately buy this if you like architecture, photography, or even just looking at something beautiful. I hope Weinberg puts out more books like this!

During my battle with breast cancer, this became the most important book in my struggle with my diagnosis and treatment. It was sitting quietly on a bookshelf at the chemo infusion room. What a beautiful, beautiful, uplifting, empowering book! It was hard to find during that time, but I am pleased to see that Amazon has it available now. Highly recommended to anyone who has been touched by breast cancer, personally or thru someone you love. The photographer captures the spirit of the women perfectly, and their stories are well written. It touched the depths of my soul.

Typography 21 is a original and creative book. The content inside were very inspirational to me, as a graphic designer. It has a variety of designs, so it should satisfy your eyes.

I thought that the page designs by Attik were much better than the works they reviewed. It was a good book, but not the best.

I am thinking of getting NoiseFour by Attik next.

I don't buy many design books because many of them tend to blur together and look the same after a while. What I really like about 'Typography 21' is that it is an 'annual' for design across many mediums. There is a nice introduction about the jurors and it showcases some of their work, to give you a sense of their backgrounds and then gets right into the work. It is a great source of reference for many needs.

The book itself it very beautiful and if you think the book-jacket is pretty, wait until you see what's underneath it.

Is it any surprise that Imaginary Forces practically owns the motion-graphics category???

I really like this book.

Gianni travelled to some of the most remote detestinations in Africa where people are so removed from modenisation they are the closest we can see to truely archaic people. The cultural images expressed in this book is an eye opening exsperience. And the photography IS ABOSULTLY AMAZING.
Mine came with a DVD which was physical footage of the tribes men.

The photographs are everything, showing African villagers much as they have lived for the past century. This is not modern Africa, but its last remaining tribal cultures completely tied to the rhythms and livelihood of stoop farming, animal husbandry, and tribal warfare. The people are often beautiful, their adornments alternately colorful and extreme (those lip disks make me wince).

At the time of this review, the Omo valley, in which these tribes are located, is threatened by flooding; this acts as a commentary on the reality of these peoples' lives. It is not idyllic or problem-free; also noted is the presence of Kalashnikov automatic rifles in at least one tribe. That this should be the only visible presence of modernity in this primitive locale, is a sobering comment upon what "progress" has brought to "backward" people.

Many of the photographs are close-ups of individual faces and of small groups. The book is entirely desirable for this alone. Soon, these scenes will only exist in a book, as the final transition to contemporary life inevitably presses itself upon these tribes.

Photographers perspective of the universe

David Malin is an astronomical photographer. In this book he shows his love for both astronomy and photography. He gives a lot of information about stars, globular nebula, supernovas, galaxies etc. etc. But he also explains how they are photographed! He describes all kinds of techniques that are used to make things visible that would otherwise stay undetected. The writer explains why it is better to make astronomical photos from three separate B/W plates with use of blue, green and red filters, instead of using regular colour film. He explains the reason behind using more than one plate for photographing faint objects. Or techniques like "unsharp masking" and "amplification". His story is illustrated throughout the book with many photos. Regularly the same object is shown with the use of varying techniques.

The book contains 66 B/W-photos and 149 colour photos (20 colour photos full page). Reproduction quality is good, as befits a book by a photographer. Only a side-by-side comparison with the coffee-table sized book "Magnificent Universe" by Ken Crosswell shows that in that book the photos are even better reproduced, although not by too big a margin. The paper quality is good (nice, thick paper). The book is well bound. Compared to "Magnificent Universe" I like the text more. This book is highly recommended.

This easy to read and understand book includes spectacular photographs and explanations of celestial sights and events. I flipped through it at Borders and bought it mainly for the pictures but it makes for good reading also. Malin takes you on a journey around the galaxy and to places further out, places like the galaxy M-83, which can be described in one word: incredible. He doesn't dazzle you with confusing technical terms. You almost feel like you're out on a clear, moonless, very dark night with a buddy who has a great telescope.

The photos here on Amazon, as pretty as they are, simply don't do the book justice. The photographs in the book have a depth and richness that evoke such a mood... A really nice mood. Boy do I like this book! From the front cover with its striking portrait of nodding wild onion (Allium cernuum) to the alien looking bur sedge (Carex grayi var. hispidula) on the back cover and everything in between its luxurious vellum pages. Yes ma’am, yes sir, I like this book. Weeds is a superb collection of some very common weeds cast in an uncommonly flattering light. Sure, it’s apparent that Bjornson occasionally utilizes some special effects magic to enhance their beauty. So what? Even super models need a little touch up treatment from the ole airbrush now and then. These sixty-four outstanding photographs make a clear aesthetic statement: weeds can be beautiful. We all know weeds can be downright ugly. But through the appreciative eye of Bjornson their hidden beauty is revealed. He has made a silk purse out of a sows-thistle, so to speak.

But weeds are not just another pretty face to him. Learning about weeds revealed a cosmic truth to Bjornson. The truth that “one needn’t travel the world to find untamed natural beauty.” These enchanting photographic portraits are gently interspersed with some thought provoking ‘weed’ haiku such as, “Wherever weeds won’t grow let man beware to go” and “Weeds are the strong and persistent creatures who live in weak circumstances”. Bjornson also cheerily refers to these “persistent creatures” as the “free spirits of the natural world”. Free spirits! This is great stuff. Who in their right mind would ever refer to velvet leaf (Abutilon theophrasti), as a free spirit? I dare say not a single Weed Science professor in recent memory.

And speaking of velvet leaf, Bjornson’s picture of this oh so common character is dazzling. One can almost feel the densely hairy stems. The detail is remarkable. This attention to detail is true of each and every picture. I don’t know how Bjornson achieves his effects but the realism of the photos is gently juxtaposed against his artistic interpretation in a way which conveys their beauty without distortion. His technique lovingly captures their color, form, and texture. Truly, these dramatic and beautiful portraits are almost mystical. But as he says in the intro, “It is a matter of perspective”. Do I rave? Yes, because I really like this book and I would suggest you peruse it with a glass of your favorite beverage, some Bach and a big cushy chair.

Those of you looking for an ID challenge won’t be disappointed. None of the pictures in the main portion of the book are labeled. They are identified in the back of the book by a smaller version of the same picture. The scientific name does accompany the picture. Since Bjornson gathered all of his plants within a few miles of his Chicago studio there are a few that may be unfamiliar to those living in Central Ohio.

This is a unique art book of extraordinary caliber. It is marvelously conceived and executed. Production values are high. It is a first class piece of work in every sense of the word. Brjonson demonstrates that he knows his subject thoroughly and personally. A subject of which he says, “One man sees a weed the same weed to another may be a flower.” You can preview this book by logging on to Bjornson’s website .... I know you won’t be disappointed. By the way, did I say how much like this book?

I have lived my whole life in the area where Bjornson collected the ignoble subjects of his book and have walked right over there beauty.

In this book Bjornson has transformed the lowly weed to the hight of zen-like visual beauty. He makes it look so simple...so simple that only hard work and great talent could produce such a work.

Many years ago when I was taking botany in college the professor told us that a weed was only a plant that nobody wanted...Well that may be true but it dose not apply to this beautiful book which I am sure you will want.

I hope the Sedona Chamber of Commerce is ready. "A Window on Sedona" just might spark a huge new influx of would-be Red Rock country residents, not to mention tourists. The photography alone in this book is worth the cover price. The information it contains is a wonderful bonus. A great gift for anyone who has ever visited this beautiful portion of Arizona, or who plans to visit in the future.

The Arizona Republic, Sunday, November 14th. Book Review Section: A Window on Sedona, written by two Sedona transplants with a penchant for the charm of smallish towns, slow living, and great interior design, bills itself as a glimpse into the heart of Sedona through the lives of its residents. This means a melange of Southwestern recipes, essays on light, and a series on impressive Sedona interiors. The photos are fabulous vignettes of unique Sedona scenes that are sometimes coordinated with the text, sometimes included to showcase local beauty. By the time you get to page 50, it will all be decided. You'll know you have to get to Sedona right now. The pictures will make you craxy to leave the city and go traipsing in the Oak Creek country until you've stumbled upon the scenes in the book and taken them in with your own eye.

My wife and I stumbled onto Sedona many years ago and we have had the pleasure of seeing it grow. "A Window on Sedona" allowed us to get a glimpse of Sedona through the people who live in this magical setting. Journeying to Sedona is worth the trip, but very rarely will you get to see this wonderful community from the homes of the people that inhabit this area. Truly a breathtaking look at the homes and landscapes that make up Sedona. If you have not had the opportunity to visit Sedona, then make sure to put it on your list of places to see in the United States. I highly recommend this book.

With the book's exquisite photography of the panoramic views and intimate dwelliing places, coupled with the descriptions of the private lifesytles of locals, I found myself absorbed in both time and place - remembering and longing to return. It is truly a book that will remain on my coffee table.
