All true NYY fans will love this book. This "coffee table" book has great insight into the history of Yankee Stadium. The photography alone is worth the price of the book - it makes you realize what a tremendous part of baseball, and history, this stadium has been. The interviews and memories of many great Hall Of Famers and future Hall Of Famers are a joy to read. I highly recommend this retrospective on an American treasure. What a loss!!!

My husband who has been a Yankee fan ever since he was a little boy loved this book I bought it as a gift for him. I originally saw it on QVC in a box for about $76 with shipping and since I don't buy any books without consulting Amazon first I checked it out. Who needs a box for an extra $40. My husband said it brought back lots of memories and the pictures are fantastic .He was thrilled I thought of this for him.

Best Pet Bull Book EVER!!

I own quiet a few books about Pit Bulls, from coffee table books to hard reading and this book is by far my favorite. This book is urban, well designed, well written and truly a great representation of Pit Bulls & Pit Bull culture. This book covers all the bases -acknowledging the Pit Bull condition in 21st century North America but working to redraw the breeds bad rap all at the same time. This is a must own for ALL Pit Bull parents and admirers. I bought this book as gifts for all of my neighbors who own Pitty Bulls and they were all amazed at how cool this book is!

As the owner of 3 awesome pit bulls I was thrilled to buy a book that captures the spirit of these great dogs. The pictures are really good and really capture the dogs spirit. They interview lots of people who tell their own "bully" story. I would highly recommend this book for any bully lover, or anyone intersted in this noble breed.

This is a good book for pitbull lovers and haters. The book is really put together well, pictures and art are great. I wasn't expecting to learn much about the breed with this book, but surprisingly it does teach you a bit. But all in all this is more of a visual book. Good stuff.

Use your head, punish the deed not the breed!!

Paul 107 presents the bulldog breeds fantastically. He does so with intelligence and facts without glossing over the breeds history. There are plenty of full color photographs and illustrations to accompany the entertaining commentary. I love the "coffe table book" style of this book.....I also love that it covers ALL of the bull breeds and focuses on them as pets in RESPONSIBLE homes. Yes, some of the images are "street" with logging chains around the dog's necks, but the context of the book is such that you learn to respect this noble breed and appreciate the interviews with various bulldog people. I highly reccommend this book for the bully collector. It's not your typical "table of contents", "housebreaking", "how to train your dog" book, rather it is a compilation of many different types and styles of writing, including poems, art, interviews, etc, as well as information on where to get quality bulldog items. A great read!

'Closeup Shooting: A Guide to Closeup, Tabletop and Macro Photography' is a wonderful book that will help you get the most of out your closeup shots that you want to look better and jump off the page at you! Shooting closeup is one of the hardest things a photographer can do. Just simply setting the camera to macro mode and pressing the 'shoot' button is rarely enough. Subjects like what is being shot, lighting, how fast the subject is moving, etc. etc. need to always be kept in mind and this book will tackle these issues and so much more! With over 100+ pages of material, this book is beautifully designed in a hardcover casing that yells out to the reader: LOOK AT ME!! If you are a serious or hobbyist photographer that is interested in taking closeup pictures or you simply want to get better at this facet of picture taking you owe it to yourself to pick up this book. I absolutely love this design and feel that this will make nearly any photographer become a BETTER photographer. Easy to recommend and a joy to peruse.

After reading through this book twice I know this will be one of my favorites on the subject. There are many things to like about it. The examples are inspiring and informative. The content is varied but not shallow. And the layout and organization make it easy to follow.

Most of all I like this book because the author exhibits many of the traits I associate with great photographers. I can tell that he has wonderful vision, and that he spends many hours diligently pursuing it. I'm also impressed by the way he applies creativity, and uses low-cost items, rather than just instructing us to buy one of everything from the camera shop to make boring "me too" images. I recommend this book 100% to anyone seriously wanting to grow into macrophotography.

Excellent Book for the Budget-Constrained

Review Date: 2008-01-14
Closeup Shooting is filled with excellent advice for beginning photographers wanting to do close-up photography. Harnischmacher clearly explains the various types of close-up photography, ranging from 1:2 to about 6:1 image magnification. Unlike many photography writers, he seems to be aware that most of his readers are amateurs and do not have unlimited equipment budgets, so he takes care to show what can be done with limited or inexpensive equipment.

The text and illustrating photos are consistently on the same page or on facing pages. The graphic layout of the book is quite appealing. Each chapter opens with a full-page 3x3 grid on which there are about 9 close-up photos, typically of camera equipment. Each facing page within the chapter typically has a couple photos to accompany the descriptive text, and a larger photo whose technical aspects are clearly explained.

The section I found most useful was near the end. In it, Harnischmacher describes and diagrams the lighting used on a series of subjects. Each diagram shows the placement of the camera, the subject, each of the lights and their coverage, and any screens or reflectors that were used. Most books, even those whose main topic is lighting, don't use this simple but highly effective way of visualizing the lighting setup.

Don't just write a press release, have a comprehensive plan

As PR has become more of a necessity for more companies, the world of public relations has become just as cluttered as the world of advertising, yet it remains a completely distinct animal. Gone are the days when writing a decent press release was enough to get you exposure. Today you need to take a strategic approach and have a complete plan. This book helps you develop that plan (and also helps you with how to write a good press release if you've not done that before).

As the host of a radio show called The Publicity Show, I have spoken with a lot of publicists and PR professionals. This book gives an insiders view on what it takes to break through the clutter that reporters are bombarded with and create real momentum that will snowball. If you are looking for how to get consistent exposure instead of just a quick hit, this is the book.

I classify business books as follows: read and forget, take notes and dump, keep for reference. This book is definitely in the latter category. For small businesses, typically characterized by a tight budget, PR is often a mystery. How do so many businesses get into the media - sometimes repeatedly? This book demystifies PR in plain language. It also has formats, elements and numerous examples of the varius types of press releases. The book also makes the valid point that money is better spent on PR than advertising. Buy this book, save thousands of dollars for a consultant, and increase the probability to make thousands for your business.

Wassilly Kadinsky was a 20th century painter and his CONCERNING THE SPIRITUAL IN ART provides a blend of philosophical, spiritual and artistic reflection as it examines the premises and presence of spirituality in art. This new edition is a recommended pick not just for art students of modernism, but for readers of spiritual works: it includes letters between Kadinsky and Sadler, unpublished prose poems, and a fine attention to artistic reflection and analysis.

Kandinsky throws his ideas out in a slightly esoteric manner. It make take a few rereads to really grasp the quality of discourse he presents. But, in the end, his commentary shines brightly through his comparisons of music to painting. The spiritual triangle is comparable to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. It is important to remember that Kandinsky is not using the term "spiritual" in a religious sense.
This book is a very good read for anyone feeling slumped in their art making. And for anyone who wants to expose themselves to ways of thinking about art. By the third time I had read the material I had underlined and highlighted almost every line and filled all the margins with notes. The book is fantastic. It is especially good when paired with Hans Hofmann's essay "In Search for the Real." Although the ideas in the two books do not parallel. In fact the lines aren't even on the same page. Kandinksky's critiques of other familiar artists are very interesting too. Names like picasso and Cezanne pop up quite a bit.
I'll stop rambling now. Read the book, it is very good.

"to break the bonds which bind". . . "to an impoverishment of possibility"

Review Date: 2007-06-26
Kandinsky had risen to positions of influence in other disciplines (political science/economics and law) before directing his considerable intellect to painting. His insights extended into the historic 'meta' trends of the arts and sciences, including the physical sciences, and had his interests been directed more to the history and philosophy of science instead of the history and philosophy of art, he might have written Kuhn's observations regarding paradigm change a half century before Kuhn did: "Here and there are people with eyes which can see, minds which can correlate. They say to themselves: 'If the science of the day before yesterday is rejected by the people of yesterday, and that of yesterday by us of today, is it not possible that what we call science now will be rejected by the men of tomorrow?' And the bravest of them answer, 'It is possible.'"

Instead, Kandinsky extended the frontiers of painting and authored philosophic writings on the future of art that are among the most important of such works. M.T.H. Sadler, who translated this work into English, was a friend of Kandinsky's and was among his early admirers. The notes he has written in the front of the book (Translator's Introduction) are therefore more helpful than could be the opinions of many other critics, including myself:

"Anyone who has studied Gauguin will be aware of the intense spiritual value of his work. The man is a preacher and a psychologist, universal by his very unorthodoxy, fundamental because he goes deeper than civilization. In his disciples this great element is wanting.

"Kandinsky has supplied the need. He is not only on the track of an art more purely spiritual than was conceived even by Gauguin, but he has achieved the final abandonment of all representative intention. In this way he combines in himself the spiritual and technical tendencies of one great branch of Post-Impressionism.

"The question most generally asked about Kandinsky's art is: 'What is he trying to do?' It is to be hoped that this book will do something towards answering the question. But it will not do everything. This--partly because it is impossible to put into words the whole of Kandinsky's ideal, partly because in his anxiety to state his case, to court criticism, the author has been tempted to formulate more than is wise. His analysis of colours and their effects on the spectator is not the real basis of his art, because, if it were, one could, with the help of a scientific manual, describe one's emotions before his pictures with perfect accuracy. And this is impossible.

"Kandinsky is painting music. That is to say, he has broken down the barrier between music and painting, and has isolated the pure emotion which, for want of a better name, we call the artistic emotion. Anyone who has listened to good music with any enjoyment will admit to an unmistakable but quite indefinable thrill. He will not be able, with sincerity, to say that such a passage gave him such visual impressions, or such a harmony roused in him such emotions. The effect of music is too subtle for words. And the same with this painting of Kandinsky's. Speaking for myself, to stand in front of some of his drawings or pictures gives a keener and more spiritual pleasure than any other kind of painting. But I could not express in the least what gives the pleasure. Presumably the lines and colours have the same effect as harmony and rhythm in music have on the truly musical. That psychology comes in no one can deny."

Some aspects of Kandinsky's color theory are dubious, at best they cannot be universalized, and Kandinsky sees this. But other of his ideas and arguments are widely accepted among artists, even as being self-evident. Stating that "there is no 'must' in art, because art is free," that is, free to address external representations OR "the inner need," to merely chase after material 'objects' OR to wrestle with the mysteriously spiritual, to somehow meld the two visions OR to stay purely to exploration of the spiritual high ground, Kandinsky absolutely rejects the materialistic expectation of an art "explanation" that has been articulated by EO Wilson in his unfortunate daydream 'Consilience' (Wilson knows ants better than he knows humans, and is given to understanding humans to be essentially ant equivalents).

Anyone interested in art history, painting of the past century, or the relationships/correlations/divergences of the various arts (visual, musical, literary), as well as anyone interested in the meaning and purpose of art, or in the philosophy of aesthetics, should read this important book, perhaps more than once.

Once I started reading this book I had difficulty putting it down until I had finished it. It was so interesting to read how it would be possible to transform sometimes hopeless looking photos into beautiful photographs. It explains a lot about masking & curves adjustments & I feel that this book will be my restoration bible. Since I've had a computer less than a year & Photoshop for a few months, I didn't understand a lot of what I was reading, so I don't know if this should be a beginners first restoration book. It provides a sophisticated approach to digital photo restoration from scan to print.

I cataloged this donated book into the academic library's collection where I work. I selected it from the books that had been donated for our annual book sale because I knew parents with little children would enjoy having something to occupy the attention of their kids while they were studying/researching. What a remarkable imagination this book testifies to! I photocopied the "Working like a Dog" page to testify to my meager efforts, it adorns my cubical. Everyone with children will want a copy of this book.

This book took my breath away. Every single page of it has something that makes you remember being a child again, and yet it touches the adult heart as well... The captions and additions of Lisa Jane's own thoughts relating to childhood and childlike wonder are equally inspiring and beautiful. Whether you tend to be a dreamer or not, you will have no choice. The dreams will start before you know it, and will continue long after the book is closed.

I consider this book to be the one treasure I have found that gives me many fond memories of being a child, and also gives me a glimpse into my own children's hearts.

Wow, what a treat! I purchased this book for my wife (oh, okay, for the two of us) for Valentine's Day. It was perfect!!!

Very sensuous and enjoyable. Some full frontal nudity, but absolutely nothing offensive. All beautiful and erotic.

This is a high-quality, coffee-table type book celebrating heterosexual love and sex. I wish we could find similar movies--people just making wholesome, beautiful love. (We're not all that interested in the XXX variety of pornography that also passes as instructional books/videos for plumbers learning how to "lay pipe," know what I mean?)

Eros is pure class for adults. Buy it and enjoy it with someone special.

I wrote this review in 1998. I will rewrite it here and say, that i have given this book as a gift many times and all the recpients have loved it. In 1998 I wrote the following and when I looked at it today.......I felt the same but even more so.Here it is............."This shimmering collection of nudes, male and female, can be debated to be a perfect gift for your love. Inscribed with your own words and pointing to a page of succulent text and a most erotic body you will surely send the arrow home like Cupid.A woman's breast cast upon with a vine's shadow is not far from the lower torso of what's surely a male dancer, toe pointing on a small wooden ball.A jug of wine , a loaf of bread and this.Review this beautiful book of nudes together by a roaring fire"

What a gorgeous collection! For me, the attraction is in the images. There's generally one B&W photo per two-page spread, beautifully printed at a large size. A lot of the pictures show a single figure, male or female. My favorites, though, show couples embracing. Although wonderfully sensual, all these photos meet the highest standards of good taste. Still, people shy about seeing the whole body might think twice.

Most two-page spreads also include extract from the literature of love. That includes everything from the classical periods of Egypt and China up to Walt Whitman, e e cummings, and Erica Jong. Like the photos, all of the chosen texts avoid vulgarity. Also like the photos, some of the passages evoked more for me than others did.

I can easily imagine a couple enjoying this together, on some night warmed by a fire, a blanket, and each other.

The black and white Photos are truly art, and the poetry is well suited to the photos. This is an adult book that stays where I can share it with my friends who enjoy beautiful art and poetry. This erotica is tastefully done and I am sorry that this book is no longer available it makes a great gift for special friends.

Absolutely Gorgeous Nude Photography

These are the most wonderful nude photographs imaginable. They are not as shocking as the Mapplethorpe photographs but they are as artistic and as sensuous as his are. Unfortunately, you have to buy your copy used. That's the way I had to buy mine. I have bought many other nude photography books new but, except for Mapplethorpe's work, none of them are as good as this book. I spent a small fortune on photographer David Hamilton's book new, for example, and I look in Hamilton's book one tenth of the time I look inside this book. This book contains both nude men and women plus couples. You can't go wrong buying this book. Get it while you can as my experience with great out of print books is that the price skyrockets before long.

This book is a must-have for new fathers.

It highlights the social, mental and emotional evolution of what it is like becoming a father which most anyone can relate to. The black and white pictures are incredibly tasteful and expressive.

A Joyous New Look at Fatherhood

I was transported to a higher level of consciousness as I viewed the exquisite photographs of fathers and their children, and read the tender, hopeful and caring words that accompany them. This book will not only lift your heart, it will inspire and encourage fathers to express their love and tenderness for their children in ways that fathers of past generations were often unable to do. I hope that many fathers (and mothers too!) of the current generation of children will enjoy this book and identify with the wonderful fathers who participated in its creation. We all need to celebrate and encourage good, loving parenting whenever we see it, and this book presents us with a perfect opportunity to do that.

This book deserves all of its rave reviews. In addition, it's a terrific teacher of portrait photography. I know that I have tried for years to take pictures of loved ones that could show even half of what I was feeling toward my subjects.

So how does he do it? Smith's portraits of beautiful dads and their delicious babies succeed magnificently for a variety of reasons. He uses light and shadow to make a point: for balance and harmony. If a dad's face is partially obscured in darkness, the beaning grim on his baby's face assures the viewer of the dad's (unseen-by-us) big smile.

Where a muscled fatherly arm is in view, there is the pudgy softness of the baby's arm. One feels the strength of dad, the vulnerability of baby, and is thrilled with the photo. Torsos, either trim or pudgy, are nearly always balanced and complemented by one another. A dad holds a baby in one hand, and the solidity of the dad's legs - and the calm face of the baby - assure us that the child is safe.

Another thing I loved about this book is that it reveals mature bodies - not for their conventional "perfectness," but as vessels of love and (in the dads' cases) protection. It's about bodies, but is never voyeuristic.

But it is the faces which are so arresting. Study this book, not only for its message of love, hope, and caring - but for the great advice it offers on how to begin to take much better, if not downright successful, pictures!

I found the photographs of fathers with their babies touched my heart. As a mother, I know how DEEPLY I feel for my two children. This book allowed me to see that men, too, are profoundly touched and forever changed when their child is born. I enjoyed reading each father's short narrative about how they cried, felt joy, enriched their relationships with the child's mother, and that they'd rather stay at home with their family than go out with "the guys". A GREAT Father's Day gift or Father-to-be gift!

wish i'd known what kind of pictures were in the book

when i saw the book cover, i immediately thought the book would be a great father's day gift for my daughter to give my husband. when the book arrived, i was surprised to see that on each page, there was a naked dad with a naked baby. i found it to be a little distasteful, and i was frustrated that nowhere in the amazon book description was it mentioned that the book contained nude dad/baby pictures. while some might find the book fascinating and sweet, i wish i'd had more information on the book before purchasing it. if i had, i wouldn't have bought it.
