This is one of the best collections of short stories i've ever read. It contains all kinds of stories. Funny, sad, historical, etc. One thing applies to them all. They are all very good. I've been to Bolivia, talked to a lot of people there, but nobody told me about their terrific writers. Strange! Buy this book. Especialy if you like South American litrature. Thank you Rosario Santos for collecting!

Don't Fear a Thing, This Sensational Series Keeps Getting Better!

Review Date: 2005-08-16
Jessica Jones is back and her latest adventure reaches new heights. Be warned though A Fearful Thing gives away key plots of previous books in the series especially The Voyage and The Pursuit where key parts of the plot are referred to on numerous occasions. Read this series in order if you can but even if you haven't read any of the other Jessica Jones series and just want to read this as a stand alone novel you won't be disappointed.

In A Fearful Thing rich kid Jeremy Lenghurst follows in the footsteps of his father and sleeps with a fifteen year old girl and makes her his fiancé. She also happens to be the daughter of a powerful Columbian drug barron who immediately sends a letter to Jeremy's mother Rowena telling her to hand back the girl and give her son to him so Jeremy can be castrated. Being a rich socialite and the wife of a convicted paedophile Rowena can see no reason to go along with this and has her powerful father put pressure on the British police to protect her son. Jessica Jones is given the job along with a new partner named Felicity Hewitt. Rowena and Jeremy don't really take Jessica seriously until they narrowly escape death in their London high-rise. Jessica convinces them to move back to their Winter home, an island in the Bahamas where she where she has to not only protect them from human villains but a Hurricane named Brigett as well.

I loved this book, the pictures, and the recipes. The text and pictures really helped me to understand how Christmas is celebrated in a culture which is different from mine, and presented a wonderful alternative to the "white christmas" prototype which is so prevalent in the United States today. The Christmas holiday time is a time that can be filled with wonder, and reading Sra. Presilla's soothing description of the holiday's of her childhood allowed me to travel to that world and to get in touch with a holiday time filled with warmth, good food, and family. I made the Seville Oranges marinade for out turkey, and everyone loved the way my kitchen smelled and the taste of the turkey. My children, ages 11 and 14, are learning Spanish in school so this was a very nice book for us to read as a family over the holiday and promoted some good discussion about the history of Cuba. We also learned some spanish vocabulary. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in exploring new traditions for celebrating winter holidays.

The author not only argues for feminism, but she does so in a unique manner, and innovative approach by arguing for feminism across borders. She compares and defines literary and national borders. This book is extremely thorough on all aspects of Chicana feminist writing available, by engaging historical theories as well as contemporary notions. To really grasp the experience, the author has certainly covered her basis in terms of depth, substance, truth and validity.

This book is very interesting! It shows how the Americans supported Flugencio Batista and his government! It also shows how Castro was not trusted by the American Businesses because they didn't feel he wouldn't be good to their profit scheming ways! This is a good book for anyone who is wanting to learn more about Fidel Castro and learn the truth about Flugencio Batista

Very well-written with a lot of color pictures. This is a must-have book for those who love Argentina poetry. I strongly believe that this essay affords an excellent opportunity to open a new door to read about the traditions of the studies on exile in the context of Latin American Studies.

Tale of a woman fighting for family, nation, and redemption.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1998-10-10
In the interest of full disclosure, the author is my mother. But my five stars aside, I feel that her latest book deserves a review, so that amazon.com customers might get an idea of what "Festival" is about.

My mother writes about her home, Belize (formerly British Honduras), a land of many cultures and ethnicities, and the only English-speaking nation on the mainland of Central America.

"Festival" is her latest novel. It tells the story of a woman tried and convicted for the murder of her husband. It's written in first-person , with a touch of magical-realism, and flashback sequences that make the book hard to put down.

Luz Marina is trying to put her life back together after her release from jail. This involves clashing with her dead husband's family over custody of her children, and a land deal the family is attempting to make that would be disastrous for the nation.

Zee Edgell writes the story of Belize, the story of women, the story of people.

Should not be missed by any studying Cuban history and culture.

FIDEL CASTRO recounts the life of a charismatic leader and dictator who has led Cuba since 1959. While much has been written about his regime, FIDEL CASTRO goes beyond politics to survey his life as well, following his rise, struggles, and international politics alike. His history is one of Cuba as a whole, and should not be missed by any studying Cuban history and culture.
