I cannot recommend this book enough. It is highly readable and full of useful advice on how to perform techniques properly. The illustrations are simple, but they do a more than adequate job of getting the point across to the reader. I find myself referring back to this book constantly as a supplement to my Capoeria training. The insight the author provides into the unique culture and history surrounding Capoeira make for interesting reading as well. I can't wait to order and read the second book in this series. Nestor Capoeira has done a great service to the Capoeira community via this book.

great read for people new to capoeira that want to have a more comprehensive review of the history, music, and game. also has an interesting review of a conference that discusses capoeira in US and Europe, which is very useful to read to learn about the different trends and mestres around. definitely recommend it!

I found this book to be an entertaining and informative read which discusses the game of capoeira on many levels from the philosophy through to movements and drills. It's a well rounded book and I reccomend that you give it a read if you are interested in capoeira (and even in philosophy).

Very nice book.

I'll be perfectly honest. With my short attention span I have at times, I havn't done much in the way of practicing through the use of this book. But what I have practiced using it, I was able to figure out easily thanks to the diagrams and explanations in it. This book was also able to make me hold the interest I first had in Capoeria before finding it with the additional sections that talk about the styles history and the philosiphies behind the art.

If you want a book on Capoeria that will hold your attention for a good long time, than you'll deffiantley want this one! Just don't assume that you'll be able to catch on to the style immediatley though, this book also proves that Capoeria isn't something you can pick up right away. ;D

Love it

I grant I'm starting out but this book has amazing insight on the philosophy and moves. Reminding that creativity is as important as learning the moves that have come from those before us. He also gives exersies that can be done when a person can't get to the roda of his instructor/mestre. After this book I'm gonna have to read more books about capoeira as well as from Nestor cause he was able to explain more than I thought could be put in a book.

I felt like I was sitting in Ronda Rich's living room and she was talking only to me as I read this book. It's so personal, warm, inviting and irresistible. There are no startling revelations in this book, except perhaps Dale Earnhardt's reaction to a race track incident with Bill Elliott, and I, for one, am thankful for that. I'm happy to see people who are heroes portrayed that way and not torn apart. This book is written in a way that I got the impression that if the author had crossed paths with bad people, she just didn't write that. Instead, she wrote of the good in people. Bless her for that. My 13-year-old son is a race fan and I have given him this book to read. I think he needs to know of the good that still lies in many people.

My wife bought this book, read it and kept bragging on it. I was reluctant to read because I'm not a big reader and I just didn't think I'd enjoy it that much. One day, I picked up the book and read the chapter about the late champion Alan Kulwicki. That did it. I then had to read the entire book. I enjoyed it very much. It shows the human side of a sport that is becoming so slick and so polished that it's easy to forget that the drivers are often regular guys with problems and struggles just like the rest of us. This book reflects on many of the heroes and legends who made the sport like Darrell Waltrip, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and others. There are places, like where she talks about her friendship with and the death of Tim Richmond, that really put a lump in my throat. As in the case of Kulwicki, who is displayed here to be a serious loner who saw too much death in his young life, his mother included, that shaped his life and personality, you are shown an inside to the sport that is seldom seen. The men in this book are true heroes and the author is to be commended for writing it in a way that we feel we are being treated to VIP look at these guys.

I was pleasantly surprised by the spell binding content of this book. I read everything I can on NASCAR and just added this book to my collection as a matter of course. I ordered four books at the same time but read this one last. I should have read it first. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. The author has a way of pulling you into the story in such an interesting way. I stayed up until 4 a.m. in the morning until I had finished every word. This is the first book about NASCAR that I ever read that shows such an emotional intimate inside look. Be ready -- you'll laugh, cry, laugh, cry. It's an emotional rollcoaster but very, very fulfilling. Without a doubt, it's the best NASCAR book in the world and I think I'm qualified to say that since I have read them all.

I couldn't really get into this book. While I chuckled at some of the stories (like the muffler bearings story), other times I thought the book delved into the sugary-sweet. As an example the two and a half pages taken up to spin the tale of her date with a present day driver. Another time she writes how dressing femininely works for you in business dealings. Huh? This book seems to be an extension of What Southern Women Know with Nascar thrown in. I don't think we're getting a good picture of life in the pits. There is Ms. Rich's side of pit life, and there is the grease under your fingernails and a motor roaring in your ears side. I would've liked a view from both sides. Perhaps it is because I've read Dale Jr's and Tony Stewart's books that Ms. Rich's book is a bit of a disappointment.

I got this book for Christmas and could not stop reading it. Just as someone else has already said, when you are done reading it, you will wish there was more. I am an aspiring motorsports public relations lady, and Ronda's book is hands-down the most insightful book about the "inside" of this sport that I have read. Her point of view is different from most writers, in a very refreshing way! If you are new to the sport, or a fan for life, this book will turn you on to the sport, or let you in on a special side of the lifestyle you already know and love. I want to thank Ronda for being so helpful to me, and sending some much needed advice my way. I would recommend this book to anyone that has ever wanted to experience "life in the pits."

The foundational principles taught by coach Wooden are one's that we can all admire. "Make each day your masterpiece." Buy this book, then give it to a friend.

Review Date: 2005-10-05
Few people, even non-golfers, can escape ever having heard of Ben Hogan. Maybe you don't know exactly who he was, but the name is oddly familiar.

To golfers, Ben Hogan is as close to legend as anything. Other players, even Bobby Jones and Tiger Woods, lack the mystique which has encompassed Hogan, even many years after his death.

What few of us know is just who he was. This information may not be so pertinant to people who play the game, since they are mostly interested in his swing. However, anyone who has touched even in a small way on part of his career realizes the great mysteries that lie in his life and being.

"Hogan" may not answer everything satisfactorily, but it comes as close as any are likely to get. This covers his life in as much informative detail as could be needed, and presents Hogan not so much in a less-than-glamorous light, as is common to biographies, but rather in a "judge for yourself" presentation of evidence for what made the man what he became.

Anyone curious about this modern legend will get more than he bargains for. Where perhaps the book does not go into his game to the extent golfers may want, the story of Hogan's life is engaging enough without it.

Carole, a horse whisperer??????????????????????????

Review Date: 2009-01-23
I found this book to be incredibly unrealistic,it was like Bonnie Bryant was just trying to fill a gap between books #73 and #75(which I have not read).Carole being a horse whisperer??????? Come on. How come it wasn't mentioned in any earlier or later books? It makes no sense in my opinion. What ever happened to Starlight, why is every horse that resembles Cobalt more important than Starlight- her own horse?! I think she shouldn't have even gotten Starlight if she is going to abandon and sell him like I know she will in the Pine Hollow series. All because of Samson, Cobalt's son. I did think the kitchen scenes with Lisa and Stevie were very funny, classic Bonnie Bryant humor, which I like. Other than that this book was a waste of my time. Just being honest, don't mean to offend anyone. Ms. Bryant is a good writer, especially in the Pine Hollow series. I would also like to point out the flaw of Ms. Bryant's math. In the beginning of the series, Lisa is 13, and Carole and Stevie are 12, and there is a two year gap between the end of SC, and the beginning of PH (in which Lisa is 17, and Carole and Stevie are 16). How could 111 SC books take place in only 2 years????? Just thought I'd point it out. I enjoy reading Ms. Bryant's books, I just didn't like this one.

This is such a beautiful SC book. Carole bonds with the mare and it is really thrilling! Then Carole rides the wild mare to set her free. Others may use the epithet, but few live it. Classy Freddie Blassie was one who did. In a country where the self-made man can still rise to the top, Blassie was one who went his own way, forging a path for others to follow. Whether as a wrestler or a manager, he entertained millions throughout his career, a special cog in the World Werestling Federation machine.

Entertaining collection of wrestling anecdotes!

This book is like watching a documentary on the life of Freddie Blassie, it doesn't read like a book, you feel like Blassie is talking to you.

It's amazing that a man that went out of his way to make people hate him somehow managed to endear himself to the public the way Freddie Blassie did. He's the man that you love to hate.

The stories in this book are often told from the point of view of Blassie and then features a quote from another aquaintance so you get an outside opinion on the situation.

Overall it's just exciting and often hilarious stories from a truly outrageous performer and athlete who was there at the birth of television and had some great runs with Regis Philbin and Andy Kaufman.

It should be noted that this is not a kid-friendly book, it has a lot of "colorful" language and stories.

Buy and enjoy, I know I did!

All you really need to know about me is the names of my five idols: Stan Lee, Stan Laurel, Gomez Adams, Steve McGarrett and Freddie Blassie (hmmm, they are all to some degree fictional--that's something I'll have to bring up in therapy).

Anyway, this is a thoroughly enjoyable and quick read that recounts the well-known events of Freddie's life and spills some beans about him and other wrestling superstars, too. I suspect that it's very heavily ghost-written but what the heck...and if it's cliche to call someone an original, then what the heck again--if anyone deserves it, it's Freddie Blassie.

He did it all: wrestle for real, for "real"; act on the Dick Van Dyke Show and an Andy Kaufman movie; make popular recordings; advise Muhammad Ali. And not too long ago he worked on this important book, which belongs in any Sports library, or bookstore department.
Following in the timeline, in Georgeous George's footsteps, or better put, on his (pause) heels, he overshadowed the original icon of TV Wrestling, with his decidedly unorthodox approach. He used more "dirty tricks" than Nixon in '72.
When he retired from competition, he became one of the most villanous Managers, whose candor was never appreciated: he would openly admit on Interviews, and in the presence of his proteges, that he remains in the game for the watches and rings. He'd then counter this admission, by showing his self-deprecating side, by pummeling himself with a folding chair. (Just as he filed down his own teeth in his prime of his career).
Blassie takes you back to a period in Wrestling when the stars were believable; when they drove themselves to matches.

Bart Yasso's story is inspirational because of all he has gone through as a runner and notably his battle with lyme disease that has severely limited his running today. He tells some great tales in this book from running from a rhino to running in a nude race to running in the extremes of Death Valley to the Antarctic. It seems there has never been a race that Yasso wasn't willing to tackle. I'm a runner and I couldn't put it down. Whether you're a runner or just like bizarre adventures or both, you'll love this book.

Review Date: 2009-05-25
This book is a lot of fun as Burt Yasso combines his love of running and just plain exercise as he documents his most off beat athletic experiences. Not a world beater but a steady age group runner that many can identify with. After reading this book, I get the impression that Burt at Runner's World was the Mikey of the old Life Cereal commercials. As in, let's get Burt to do it. Essentially fun reading fare about some amazing adventures; running a marathon in Antarctica (the boat trip there was challenging enough), a funny chapter on running a 5k race in a nudist camp and being the guest speaker the night before without a podium, to running in Death valley on a brutal 135 mile trek finishing on top of a mountain to traveling across the USA alone on his bike. The book provides a nice break from reality reading these interesting and fun stories of a daring, self effacing fellow with an obviously high pain threshold. Very enjoyable short chapter stories and I enjoyed the biking across America chapter immensely, that could have been a lot longer with more detail. Yasso helps coordinates races for race directors for Runner's World and he lists his top favorite races across the country and world. Not atechnical read but more arelaxcing read. Includes the infamous Yasso 880 yard marthon training that predicts your time by science or mere co-incidence but for many it worked. And he is right about the Monument Ave. 10K in Richmond, it is one of the best, I have run it 5 years in a row, and Burt is always there. This is a great book to take on a plane ride and just enjoy the time in between.

I've read a few books by runners such as Karnazes, Pam Reed, and collections of runner's stories such as Running Through the Wall, and Then The Vulture Eats You, and Ultrarunning: My Story. I've come to one conclusion: every lifetime runner has stories but unless it's something cpmpletely amazing I'm not that interested in listening. maybe I've just read too much but nothing in this book really excited me. I'm sure it has been incredible to be a participant in all of these runs but I would have liked a little more depth instead of a survey of a lifetime of running.

Worth reading, just could have been better.

As a running mag editor for many years I've been obligated to read/scan far too many running articles and books. My official retirement freed me of that sometimes tedious duty; however, when I found My Life on the Run, I couldn't resist. I have to say, with no ulterior motive, Bart Yasso's book is the most philosophically insightful since George Sheehan and the most engaging book on running I've read (forced or by choice). Just my opinion--but of course if I hadn't liked it, I wouldn't comment at all (my job as editor being past tense).

First, I hate the Steinbrenner era Yankees, so my review might be biased. However, there are few baseball fans who take the game as seriously as I do, having played, coached, and umpired for the past 40 years. As a coach, I was a stat freak, tracking every facet of the game in an effort to find ways to win. But seriously, guys, how many wild pitches, sac flies, double plays, etc. that an individual player threw/hit in a given season is BORING.

By The Numbers - give us relevant stats instead of fluff for the numbers that really have no meaning. Uniform numbers - a piece of history, especially for the Yanks. Give us more back stories that provide insight into the players and coaches who made up the teams - I had tears in my eyes as I read the Thurmon Munson story. But don't throw out irrelevant stats for the purpose of covering every number from 1 to 1000. Numbers don't lie - but they can be deceiving.

The book is a great concept if you scan and skip the fluff. Stories are very insightful, and this book is a great read for Yankees fans. If you are a Red Sox fan, it makes good kindling (read the short stories that begin each set of numbers first though - there is great insight there!).

Outstanding! A great gift for any baseball fan.

I loved this book. I could not put it down at night. This book is the perfect bedside or coffee table reading material. New York Yankees: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports has a huge collection of interesting data about the entire New york Yankees history. But not only does it include numbers (as in Sports by the Numbers -the authors trade marked series of books) but it also has photos, stories and trivia that will bring you back to this tome, time and time again after reading it the first time. Some of the information will surprise you, some will delight you and some will enlighten you. The authors also have a website devoted to adding to the books experience. This "Interactive World of Sports" expands on some of the authors favorite topics and gives you, the reader, even more bang for your buck. What a great idea!

In my opinion, the index alone is worth the price of the book when you see all the players' statistics it encompasses. New York Yankees reminds me of the perfect scrapbook with poignant pictures, history and the legends who made that history.
A must read for Yankees fans and in fact, all baseball fans will enjoy this outstanding book. What a great gift!

Die Hard Sports Fans can take their knowledge of their favorite teams to an unprecedented level with the purchase of a SPORTS BY THE NUMBERS book. If you think you have facts, stats, and figures on all your teams' most prolific players now, just wait until you experience one of these SPORTS BY THE NUMBERS books. Until you get your hands on one of these books, you ain't seen nothin' yet! After reading one of these books, you will feel like you've collected an array of facts from complete volumes of encyclopedias devoted to your team.

I recently, picked up NEW YORK YANKEES: AN INTERACTIVE GUIDE TO THE WORLD OF SPORTS, and I was mesmerized. SBTN Guys Daniel J. Bush, David Horne, and Marc CB Maxwell compiled an extensive collection of tidbits accounting for every number from 1 to 1000. For example, "24. The number of times Don Baylor was hit by a pitch in 1985" and "923. The fielding percentage at third base for Don Mattingly." The writers elaborate on each tidbit explaining the records that Baylor set with his HBP's and the odd choice the management made by moving Mattingly from first to third.

I found this book is perfect for readers who are looking for quick five-minute reads in the bathroom, at the doctor's office, before falling asleep, or over a cup of coffee. The five minutes of reading will feel like an hour's worth of satisfying mental stimulation.

Check out their interactive website and discover other SBTN books like: NASCAR: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports (Sports by the Numbers)UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports (Sports By the Numbers)UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports (Sports By the Numbers)

I hear The Boston Red Sox and San Franciso Giants are on deck for these guys. Count me in. Meanwhile, I will be hoping they take on my favorite team the MILWAUKEE BREWERS.

It helps if you are a fan of the Yankees when you read this book, but I was quite surprised that you truly can be a fan of the game and loathe the Yankees and still enjoy this book very much.

Let me point out three things that I think separate this book from others on the market about the Yankees at the moment:

1. It has a complete index that references players and teams and significant moments that are a part of Yankees history -- and this allows fans of other teams and players to easily sort through the book and read the parts more to their liking -- this is a strong plus for the book.

2. The chapters begin in a traditional book format -- you get a biographical sketch of nine legends who wore pinstripes, but they are written in a respectful, at times somber, and at other times uplifting and inspiring way -- and they are short. They get you going again right into the numbers that tell the stories that make up the Bronx Bombers.

3. This is the kind of book that you can pick it up and read from any page it opens to -- and you'll enjoy it. You don't have to read it from page 1 through page 200 -- just pick it up, find a number, start reading, learning something fascinating about baseball, the Yankees, and perhaps even that favorite player you had as a kid.

I suspect this book will do quite well if it can gain traction and get a buzz around it -- a great, great holiday gift, which is what I'm doing. I ordered five copies to give all as gifts. You can order them signed from the author's website, but they are cheaper on Amazon -- give it a look though if you are interested: www.sportsbythenumbers.com

This book purports to be interactive, meaning the authors are on the web running blogs and chatting with fans and that sort of thing -- and sure enough they are. I shot one of them an email off their website, and the next thing I knew I got a free signed copy of the book in the mail. Gives these guys credit though -- they knew I'd write a good review on the book for them in exchange for the freebie, but what's cool is I get to tell the truth while I'm doing it. I enjoyed this book -- it is a great, fun, quick read that will benefit any fan of baseball, and especially fans of the New York Yankees.

The history of the Evil Empire

I love it when fans of other franchises refer to the Yankees as the Evil Empire -- I think it says something about the mindset of baseball fans everywhere, that the Yankees are truly the measuring stick for every other franchise out there. In this new book, New York Yankees: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports, the authors do a great job of telling the stories that illustrate exactly why the Yankees really are that measuring stick. Any book about the history of the Yankees is actually a book about the history of baseball -- because as the authors point out, you can't tell the history of baseball without the Yankees -- and for that reason this is a book that true baseball fans will really enjoy. The book is a quick, fun read -- one word of caution to Red Sox fans though, there are a few good stories here that come at your expense. I imagine since this is a series that a Red Sox book is in the works and the tables will probably be turned -- but in the meantime, enjoy a thousand stories about the greatest franchise in baseball history with this new book.

I just met the author and videotaped her on Saturday. She shares her love of San Francisco neighborhoods and the 600+ stairways in our fair city. I've been going on walks from Adah's book for 10 years and they're all fun, good exercise, and a new way to see San Francisco. I highly recommend this book, if you want to see the real San Francisco.[...]

I have used earlier editions of this book. The walks are great and good exercise and I like the fact that it is easy to combine walks. The addition of photographs is really good.

Stairway Walks in San Francisco I have lived in San Francisco all my life and this book has introduced me to all kinds of nooks and crannies that I've never seen before. Instructions are generally good and maps are excellent. There are a few typos, so you have to keep your wits about you.

My husband and I have made this a Sunday tradition for the past 3 weeks and have enjoyed each walk immensely. We are disappointed that it is cold and rainy and we will not get our "fix" today. I agree with all the wonderful things said in other reviews, with a few caveats. Before venturing out for your walk, read through and make sure you understand where the starting point is. We've had the experience of following the instructions to start at the intersection of X & Y. The next instruction is to "walk toward Z", and we had no idea where that was relative to where we were! I admit that my husband and I both have a rather poor sense of direction, so this may affect us more than others. Also, each walk has a condensed, bulleted list of point-to-point directions, and a separate section of descriptive paragraphs about the walk. Neither is adequate alone, and neither references the other. So I prepare ahead of each walk, by going through the fully texted paragraphs and jotting in the number of the instruction from the bulleted list next to the corresponding text. That makes it easy to flip back and forth between the brief list and the wordier descriptions. There is no indication of the distance between each item in the directions. For example, in Walk #8, "Left on Bay to Broderick" is one block, and "Right on Broderick to Vallejo" is 8 blocks! There is a map that is mercifully numbered corresponding to the bulleted instructions, unlike the textual descriptions. So you can flip between descriptive text, bulleted directions, and a map, while you are trying to walk, enjoy the view, and perhaps even chat with your companion. It can be overwhelming. Advance preparation, getting familiar with the map, and making sure the instructions make sense to you, can help things go more smoothly on execution. Additionally, each walk is not described in length or anticipated completion time. At some point, the book says each walk is about 2 1/2 hours, with time to view the architecture, parks, views, etc. that are described along the way. However, walk #16, Forest Knolls took us less than an hour last week, and we were definitely not rushing. It would be nice to be able to choose a longer walk when you have more time, and a shorter walk when you don't. I am taking notes in my book indicating the date we take each walk and how long it takes. I plan to start wearing my running Garmin during the walks and making notes on distances as well. In spite of the minor shortcomings of this book, I am taking the time to make these notes because I plan to use it frequently for a long time to come, and to recommend it to friends as well. There is nothing else like it, and I have seen beautiful, charming, breathtaking, quirky, and enchanted sights in San Francisco that I never would have seen without the help of this inspired book.

I found this book (rather thick - 251 pages) on the shelves of my local Santa Cruz library shelves. At first I thought it was rather boring - the cover is dizzying to look at. Then as I opened and perused thru more pages, I realized that this was a work of love - Adah Bakalinsky's love (a San Francisco local, and an emigrant to the US).

Adah Bakalinsky has expended previous editions and the January 2007 is the 6th edition.

What I liked about this book:
* informs the reader on some cool areas to walk in San Francisco, with cool architecture, and routes that will have your blood pumping.
* the 27 walks are all detailed with a map layout, interesting points of interest, photographs, and many factoids.
* Appendix 1 contains "An Informal Bibliography" (one pager with more info on the San Francisco)
* Appendix 2 lists all the staircases (across 36 pages) for each neighborhood in San Francisco and rates each one according to a 1 to 5 scale of combined: steepness, length, location, elevation, and beauty.
* and ... it was FREE.

Whether you are from out of town visiting San Francisco, a local denizen, or a Bay Area suburbian, you are sure to enjoy this book, even if not completing a walk from start to finish. The details are worth reading before each walk, as one is sure to add more mental details and moments of enjoyment as one walks across the beautiful city of San Francisco.
