Mech's book is an excellent resource when radio-tracking critters. I kept the book with me in the truck as I tracked down the endangered kit fox in California. The books gives a good overview of what telemetry is and a nice section on tracking from the air - which I used several times. Any radio-telemetry tracker needs this book in the glove box.

A Long-Overdue Biography of a Magnificent Character Actor
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-06
As a voice artist and character performer myself, I have long been in the habit of studying the "old masters" (Mel Blanc, Paul Frees, Stan Freberg, Daws Butler, and of course Hans Conried). Since most of them are no longer with us, I can only study examples of their work, as well as books and articles about them. Sadly, such books and articles are very few and very far between, and it can be extremely difficult to track down which episodes of which radio series featured which performers.

Suzanne Gargiulo's book is a huge help with this. It's extremely well-researched, and includes quotations from Hans' friends, co-workers and family, as well as numerous photographs and other ephemera from the Hans Conried Special Collection at Boston University. Fortunately for posterity, Hans was a packrat, who saved reams of these items, which were then donated to the University, after his death in 1982. He was so prolific---particularly in radio drama and bit roles in films---that Suzanne's website (www.hansconriedbook.com) includes corrections and additions, as they come up.

However, for all its information, this book is a very easy, comfortable read---not at all dry (except, of course, for the examples of Hans' own wit). I found it impossible to put down, and my copy is now very well lived-in, with dog-eared pages, highlighting, and notes scribbled in the margins. Needless to say, I do NOT intend to part with it!

As this is the only book about the life of Hans Conried, it gave me a wealth of information to discover, about this wonderfully talented and versatile (some would even say TOO talented and TOO versatile) character actor. One particular gem of information: Not only did he voice Captain Hook and Mr. Darling in the Disney version of "Peter Pan", but he also performed in full costume in the live-action reference footage that was shot to assist the animators. Therefore, many of Hook's and Darling's gestures and mannerisms are really Hans' own!

The Filmography and listings of Stage, Television, Voice, and (above all) Radio Work have proved an invaluable resource in my efforts to track down examples of his work, to add to my own reference library, because in the 1930s, '40s and '50s, most radio performers were uncredited.

After reading and re-reading this book, I know what a wonderfully talented actor and delightful person, Hans Conried was. And I feel truly cheated, that I never got to speak with him personally, or to work with him.

This book belongs in the library of anyone who is, aspires to be, or appreciates voice actors, character actors, Shakespearean actors, radio drama, and eccentric characters in general. (And few characters are as eccentric as Hans himself.)

When you purchase the book, I recommend adding the video of "The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T.", so you can see Hans in the role of a lifetime, which should have (had the studio not butchered the film in the editing suite) launched his career into the stratosphere it deserved. The DVD set of the complete series of "Fractured Flickers" (hosted by Hans) is also worth adding!

Barz Does It Again!

I have been doing part-time radio voice over work for years and I remember hearing Alan Barzman voicing national radio commercials way back in the 70's. I admired his work and so when I came across this book, I had to buy it. His sometimes tongue-in-cheek writing was very entertaining and he gives you a behind the scenes look at the history of radio and the way radio commercials are now. I especially liked Chapter 16, which gives you all you need to know if you're considering a career in voicing radio ads. I especially remember the days when Barzman teamed up with Bert Berdis (formerly of the famous radio team, Dick & Bert) and formed their own 'radio ranch.' If you're an afficianato of radio, you'll enjoy going down memory lane with this book.

Hey guys and girls, if you like Carson Daly, well, you're cool! He is soooooo hot, and there is no one like him, at MTV, or in the world! I have met him before (twice) and let me tell you, that boy knows how to dress, and he smells ohhhh so good! And, I also dig the five o'clock shadow that always manages to be on his face! Anyways, Cars rocks, and if you like him, you rock too!

Ian Hickman presents readers with a number of short articles which deal with difficult and important areas of the art of analog and RF electronics. He succeeds in doing this using an elegant illustrative style of writing, with lots of useful diagrams and illustrations of test data. The book has sections dealing with general analog, audio and RF circuits and is well rounded with a section covering basic principles.

A practical treatise that will inspire adventures in the electronics lab for both seasoned expert and novice alike. Excellent for reference also.

I have always found Focus on the Family's Radio Theatre to be well done, and this production was no exception. The voices, direction, sound effects, all were well done. From what I remembered, the story follows the book pretty closely. The one issue I might have is that the voices tend to be soft while the sound effects are somewhat loud, so one minute we are turning up the volume to hear people talking, and the next turning it down so we don't suffer hearing damage. Other than that, our family has a lot of fun listening to this drama in the car. We didn't want to stop listening when we got home! It pulls you in just like the book.

I bought this item as a reference book .It turned out to be a helpful handbook for development of RF-prototype circuits. .Although most applications listed are "single frequency" as "opposed to broadband", it can be used for F-O applications as well. There are alot of valuable examples of circuits/precautions presented in detail.

One of the best books about synthetic aperture radar
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-02
This is one of the best books about synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Its explanation is brief and clear. Its reference list will guide you to find everything that you need. It is a pity that the cover design of the book is misleading. Since the helicopter is the platform and the ship is the target, why does the radar beam come from the ship? It is ridiculous.
