History of the Biggest Astronomical Advances of the Century

The history of optical astronomy goes back virtually forever. From at least the time of Stonehenge, perhaps 5,000 years ago, people were observing the heavenly bodies. With the invention of the telescope, great progress began from the time when Galileo observered the moons of Jupiter and continues with the most recent pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope.
In 1933, Karl Jansky, doing research for Bell Laboratories on why radio signals had noise found a strange 'hiss type static' that he traced to its origin to the center Milky Way Galaxy. From this began the whole idea of looking at the stars in every possible frequency both above and below visible light.
This book, written in 1983 was written in celebration of fifty years of radio astronomy, after the discovery of radio galaxies, quasars, pulsars, cosmic background radiation and complex interstellar molecules. The writers are the people making the basic discoveries or people at least close to the action.
Radio astronomy was the biggest advance in astronomy during the twentieth century. Here's how it came about.

The calm tones emanating from the BBC in World War II were, for many, the voice of Britain herself; brave, determined, and unflappable. The medium, as unprepared for war as other British institutions, evolved under the unprecedented demands, rising magnificently to the occasion and becoming an indespensible part of the Allied war effort.
The history of this heretofore neglected aspect of the war effort is well told here, with photos, bibliography, and index.

A Man For All Shows!

This is a well-researched and well-written book about one of America's early actors... Edward J. Pawley. It provides the reader with an insight to the man who essayed the role of Elmer Gantry on Broadway and was a leading man in many other Broadway plays before going to Hollywood where he played a multitude of bad-guy roles with the likes of James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Mickey Rooney, John Garfield, et cetera. He played so many gangster roles (in movies) that policemen would eye him with suspicion when he walked down the street! His greatest fame came later in his career when he took over (from Edward G. Robinson) the role of "Steve Wilson" on radio's popular drama series titled Big Town.
The book reveals heretofore little-known facts about his family, his two wives, his two actor brothers, his progeny, and his genealogical history. Also, his reasons for leaving Broadway, Hollywood, and Big Town. All-in-all, a very interesting read, and a fine tribute to a wonderful man who made an impact in three different entertainment mediums and who also wrote poetry.

The contents had been well indicated by the book title, and covered by Amazon product description.
This book is recommended for experienced antenna guys, both engineers and professors, especially those who are looking for magic small form-factor antennas for wireless applications. You do not need much mathematic background to read this book. As stated in the preface of the book, the author explored issues relate to three seemingly different fields of antenna design, yet extracted something in common that limit performance: low radiation resistance, high reactance, low efficiency, narrow bandwidth, and increased loss in matching networks.
I recommend this book to all antenna design engineers.

This book traces the development of electronics, especially radio, from semiphore signals through television. It presents the human side of technical developments, like Edison and de Forrest puzzling over the black spot that forms on light bulbs as they near burning out. Their curiosity over that black spot led to vacuum tubes and modern electronics. The book also gets into the very technical and explains in detail how superheterodyne receivers work and why they are far superior to tuned radio frequency circuits. Anyone interested in electronics needs to read this book at some point.
