This book is a hilarious reflection of Samuel Marchbank's everyday life and travels in Canada.. Every entry has something interesting to say even if it is forced out by his admitted lack of dramatic excitement.. Some of my favourite quotes have come from this book and others in the Marchbanks series.

A wonderful version if you cannot watch this on the telly. I enjoy listening to Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, and all these wonderful "daft bats" on the cd player!!!! If you are familiar with this show, you will certainly enjoy these cds! Buying the scripts are also well worth it! I truly wish Victoria Wood made more....but they ended the second series with a very happy ending!!!! Enjoy!!

New Doctor...Old Enemies...Classic Who

Imagine the following for a moment would you?

It is November 5th, 1966 and you have just tuned into the BBC's successful series Doctor Who. William Hartnell, who has played the role of the mysterious time traveling alien known as the Doctor since November 1963, has just vanished in a glow of light and Patrick Troughton appears as the second actor to play the Doctor. Over the next few weeks this new Doctor and his companions (Ben and Polly played by Michael Craze and Anneke Wills) find themselves on the Earth colony Vulcan facing off against the Doctor's oldest enemy the Daleks in the midst of political intrigue. Sounds like a great story to watch right? Well because of BBC policy in the 1970's Power of the Daleks no longer exists in its visual form. Thanks to fans with tape recorders however, Power of the Daleks survives is audio form and is presented here with linking narration by Anneke Wills. The result is a new Doctor, old enemies, and classic Who.

Power of the Daleks is easily one of the strongest Doctor Who stories of the 1960's. On the distant Earth colony Vulcan where a scientist named Lesterson (played expertly by Robert James) finds a space craft. Upon opening it he discovers three Daleks inside and, against the Doctor's advice, brings back to life with hopes for them becoming servants for the colony. The Daleks promise to be servants, but soon begin using materials and power to begin creating an army. Meanwhile the political intrigue heats up and the Daleks go from benevolent to malevolent as first they fight for the rebels and then against everyone. Only the Doctor can hope to defeat the Daleks before the complete destruction of the colony. The story is at its heart a political thriller with two factions vying for control of the colony with the Doctor and the Daleks landing in the middle and making matters worse.

Due to the story being in audio it's hard to judge this story on its visuals, though surviving clips make it look impressive. Therefore the story can only be judged from an audio standpoint. From that stand point (with just voices, sound effects, and narration) this story is first rate. The story is a well-performed and well produced piece of science fiction drama with terrific performances from the cast. The Dalek voices have the same unsettling quality as they always have had and to hear an apparent army screaming "Annihilate! Exterminate! Destroy!" and "Daleks conquer and destroy!" makes for a truly incredible sound. Anneke Willis narration is not intrusive by any means. Instead it gives visuals to a story that otherwise would have none (keep in mind this was produced for TV originally not for audio). Power of the Daleks is a TV story that works very well in an audio format.

Despite having no visual images, Power of the Daleks is classic Who. From its political thriller heart to classic moments with the new Doctor facing his oldest enemy, this story is one of the strongest stories of the Troughton era even if it is his first story. This is a must for Doctor Who fans.

Come for the Doctor, stay for the writing!

These are some of the most innovative Who writings in years. You may not like each one, but you will walk away saying atleast someone in Whodom is trying new things.
The first story is a fifth doctor story about the origins of the Cybermen. The Doctor is a minor charecter and the main focus is a normal family on the cybermen home world as it is falling apart. Wonderful writing, and very sad.
The second story features the sixth Doctor in a typical Who story originally written for Tom Baker. It is the first meeting of the Sixth Doctor and the Brigadier. Quick, witty writing makes this a fun page turner that I was sorry to see end.
The third story is the 7th doctor and Ace called "The Rapture" and is the most bizarre Who story I have ever read. The Doctor and religion is something authors tend to avoid, and I find that sad. I would love to see more stories like this one.
The fourth story is with the 8th doctor and charley. It takes place in just three rooms and is another well written masterpiece.
All the stories were fun and fast reading. I really like the author's candid comments before each story. They enhance the enjoyment of the story and make me want to read the rest of the series. If Who is getting a little old for you, read these scripts and be reminded of the endless possibilities Who offers.

The second volume of Robert Gate's DR. WHO: THE AUDIO SCRIPTS is a recommended specialty pick for fans of the TV show and dramatists interested in science fiction. Big Finish Productions has produced ongoing audio adventures based on Dr. Who since 1999: THE AUDIO SCRIPTS provides the original scripts for four of the publisher's most popular stories, accompanied by an essay by actress India Fisher.

This is so much more than a mere behind the scenes book. Contains a great wealth of info on Big Finish and their work on Doctor Who. There are many interviews with cast members, and the people who write/create the Big Finish stories. Each audio 'adventure' gets good coverage, with my favorites being the trivia and the deleted scenes sections.

Russell T.Davies provides a foreword, and Paul McGann the afterword. The book is oversized, and is about 280 pages. About the only drawback I can think of is the fact that ALL the photographs are in black and white only. Otherwise, a fun and informative guide to Big Finish's Doctor Who audios. :D

Yeti Attack charms, disarms.

Yeti Attack features full-length soundtracks of The Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear, two endearing Doctor Who stories from the Patrick Troughton era. Both stories have all the ingredients of perennial favorites: Patrick Troughton's Doctor, accompanied by Jamie and Victoria, battling large, roaring Yeti, with the assistance of strong supporting characters.

The Abominable Snowmen is the first introduction of the Yeti, and is set in their native Himalayas. The Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria attempt to visit a Tibetan monastery, and instead confront an irate English scientist, dangerous warrior-monks, a mysterious abbot, and several sinister abominable snowmen. The Web of Fear first introduces us to Brigadier (then-Colonel) Lethbridge-Stewart, and is one of the earliest stories to use the Earth-bound soldier vs. monster model that would form the basis of the Pertwee era. When the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria perform an emergency landing, they are drawn off-course into the London Underground and become entangled in the web of fear.

While the Intelligence that guides the Yeti is a dangerous foe, both stories are set on Earth, and have a lighter, less menacing tone than some of the classic monster stories (such as Tomb of the Cybermen). Morale is high, the banter is charming, every character is memorable, and the Doctor is in top form, playing the role of detective, scientist, mediator, hero, and musician with flare. And unlike some lost episodes, these stories hold up well in an audio-only rendering. The fine quality of the scripts and the supporting cast makes both soundtracks reward multiple listenings. (Jack Watling, the father of Debbie Watling [Victoria], plays Professor Travers in both stories.) I suspect that the popularity of the Yeti wasn't all due to their fuzzy, platypus-like appearance. It must have gained something from the high quality of these stories, which remain among my favorites of the Troughton era.

(from the back-of-the-box text):

DRAGNET: Starring Jack Webb as Sergeant Joe Friday of the Los Angeles Police Department. Dragnet came to NBC radio in July of 1948 and ran until 1956. From the first DUM-DE-DUM-DUM of Walter Schumann's immortal theme, Dragnet reached a new high in police dramas. Webb and company were assisted by W.H. Parker, Los Angeles chief of police, who provided up to three officers as technical advisors on each show. It enjoyed a lengthy radio run, a full-length movie in 1954, and was also televised with great success.
