These "9 Mysterious Tales" are great fun on a trip or just to make housework less of a chore. I have 2 sets of Act One Audio CDs and have ordered 2 more. If you like short stories, this is a good choice.

What a great deal!!!!!! These are truly great mysteries that keep your interest. After listening to the first one on a road trip, we went out and purchased the rest of the series. The entire family truly enjoyed these one-act thrillers. They left you in suspense until the end and begging for more.

Best of the series

Listen carefully to the first episode - Sam makes love to a nurse to get medicine without her knowing. In "The Bail Bond Caper," Effie is on vacation and this was the first of three consecutive episodes in which Sandra Gould played the role of Bernadine, a temporary secretary, for Sam. Think this kind of trivia is fun? Then I recommend you get the book, "The Radio Adventures of Sam Spade" which is also available on Amazon.com. It gives you fascinating background for the series, and behind-the-scenes trivia. This CD box set, incidentally, is an excellent introduction to one of the best radio detectiev programs ever broadcast.

The Best Private Eye Radio Show
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-07
Sam Spade was the creation of Dashiell Hammett and is widely remembered from Humphrey Bogart's portrayal in the 1941 film The Maltese Falcon. William Spier (often referred to as the Hitchcock of radio) was the creative force behind both Suspense (widely regarded as the greatest radio show of the era) and The Adventures of Sam Spade, Detective. Dunning in his On the Air, the Encyclopedia of Old Time Radio says "The show was loved in its time and still is. The plots were often run-of-the-mill fare, obviously hacked out in the heat of the deadline. No one cared if holes were patched in an obvious and sometimes careless way-this show had a style and class that the others all envied. Duff made the writing part of his own unique character. The wit and charm of the show has weathered four decades, and The Adventures of Sam Spade remains today the pinnacle of radio private eye broadcasts."

One of the most important books on the history of radio

Review Date: 2001-01-09
There are probably a dozen or so books that I've read and re-read cover to cover in one siting. I am adding Kanze and Sulek's to that pile, making it a super baker's dozen. It's a solid, well written text, highlighted with great pictures and memorabilia about radio's AM history in metro #1. My only regret for the radio historian is that there isn't one for all the other major metro areas like Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas. I look forward to their FM version. Gotta have it. Bob Donnelly

New York AM radio is alive once again in this nice pictorial
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-27
Growing up in New York City, I lived the New York AM radio experience. My era was 1010 WINS with "Murray the K" and Jack Lacy. Occasionally I would dial up to Peter Tripp on WMGM-1050 or down to the "sweatshirt station", WMCA (Yeah-yeah). As I moved through adolescence music began to disappear from New York AM. Soon all we had left was WABC-Musicradio 77. That too would eventually go to radio heaven.

Bill Jaker's fantastic compilation takes us behind the New York radio scene. It puts faces to the voices of the disk jockeys who woke us up each day. Those who sat next to us on the beach blanket at Coney Island on a warm summer afternoon, and to the ones who rocked us to sleep each night. They all come back to life once again thanks to Bill Jaker and his friends.

But that's not all. You'll learn all about the storied history of the #1 radio market in the world. All the great radio stations of the 50's and 60's, and about stations you never even heard of. If you ever turned on a radio in New York, waited patiently for the tubes to glow and wondered who are these guys who keep playing the music I love, this book is for you. Despite what others say, you can go back in time, and this book will take you there. Enjoy! I did.

Hour episodes better than half-hours ones
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-15
The ever-growing catalogue of Radio Spirits boxed sets is now richer by one more: on 4 audio cassettes or 6 CDs. Each tape holds a one-hour dramatization and a half-hour one; each CD a single one-hour show or 2 half-hour ones.

The first of the one-hour shows is The Screen Director's Playhouse version of "Lifeboat" (11/16/50) with Tallulah Bankhead recreating her original role. "Spellbound" (1/25/51) on the same series offers Joseph Cotten and Mercedes McCambridge in the Peck and Bergman roles; while Studio One's "The Thirty Nine Steps" (3-23-48) stars Glenn Ford and Kathleen Cordell in the leads. Academy Award's "Strangers on a Train" (12/2/51) gives us Ray Milland and Frank Lovejoy in the roles created by Farley Granger and Robert Walker. All of these are extremely well done, forced (of course) by time considerations to leave out certain events shown in the film (such as the actual murder of the wife by psychopath Bruno in "Strangers").

The half-hour shows are not nearly as satisfying, being forced to rush the plots almost to the point of mere outlines of the originals. There is the very first airing of a Suspense show, "The Lodger" (7/22/40) with Herbert Marshall, Academy Award's "Foreign Correspondent" (7/24/46) with Joseph Cotten, The Screen Guild Players "Rebecca" (11/18/48) with John Lund and Loretta Young in the Olivier and Fontaine roles, and Academy Award's "Shadow of a Doubt" with Cotten in his original role.

The acting is mostly very good in all eight of these broadcasts; but as I said, you will find the longer versions more satisfactory. Still they are all part of the best of old-time radio's golden history.

APHC Final Performance - a masterpiece and maybe the best

This was intended to be Keillor's last show in 1991. It was not, to a lot of people's great relief. First there is the music - if ever there was a recording to match the guitar work of Chet Atkins and Leo Kotke in 'Sleepwalk' I've yet to hear it. The songs Keillor sings, sad songs, beautiful songs of endings and parting will break you heart. The last episode of the 'News from Lake Wobegon' is just astounding. You cannot miss the tone of a man saying goodby to a lifetime. The humor is what it always was, just plain wonderful. If you've got to leave, didn't want to, hoped you would come back you will hear it all here. Parhaps the finest show he's ever done.

SO beautiful, it'll make you cry.

As Magical as Santa Himself

Who wouldn't want to be the kid to help Santa and save Christmas? When Robert, listening on his radio in the Midwest, learns from an Airship Captain that the Polar Ice Pack has cracked in several places, he knew that could spell trouble for Santa, and Christmas. This is a holiday story with lessons for all year 'round. The story goes well beyond Christmas, and mixes ecology, geography, airships, and hobbies in an engaging way. Both budding hobbyists/scientists and experienced ones will enjoy this story.

An exciting parable that reminds young readers that it's important to never give up

Arctic Airlift is impressively illustrated and entertainingly written by the nationally recognized artist Richard Ross (an Associate Professor of Design, Buffalo State University) whose work has been exhibited at the Society of Illustrators and feature in a number of professional and popular publications. This is a 40-page picturebook Christmas adventure story for children grades 2 through 5 about a young boy with a two-way radio in the Midwest and an airship captain in the arctic north who must team up to rescue Santa and his workshop. Unusually warm sea currents have caused the Polar Ice Pack to crack and flood! An exciting parable that reminds young readers that it's important to never give up, and sometimes one needs a little help from friends. The uniquely styled, heavily shaded color illustrations give this charming Christmas rescue story a distinctly unique feel.

The Radio and Electronics Reference Manual

Review Date: 2001-01-18
The 2001 edition of The ARRL Handbook is the latest and most up-to-date version of an excellent reference book for both the Amateur Radio operator or anyone interested in RF engineering. The Handbook contains information on the basics of radio operation and practices and detailed information for the RF engineer needing to know technical component details. The ARRL has again designed a wonderful book that will provide information for all levels of hams. Information on the new HF digital modes is provided, as well as the old standards of voice and CW. For those wanting to know the theory behind the radios, the ARRL focuses on the technical details - the how and why - of the radios and the modes, so that when you walk away from this book you will know the answer to your question (and a lot more if you keep reading!) The only real negative comment on this book is that there is a LOT of very technical information. This can make finding exactly what you want to know a challange, as it takes a little digging and knowing exactly what you are looking for. A very complete index does make this much easier. However, for the beginniner this book would do well to whet your appetite for venturing deeper into Amateur Radio, and for the master RF engineer this book serves well as a very detailed technical reference that can aid in every day engineering questions.

I was dumb struck at the production values in this awesome radio production. It does not get any better than this. Dirk Maggs was simply brilliant in pulling together a great cast and bring this audio masterpiece to life. Close your eyes forget what Warner Bros did to stuff up the movie and become part of Gothams landscape.

Tim Burton should listen and learn.
