As an instructor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts I find "Voice and Vision" and excellent reference in all areas of physical production. I give my most talented students a copy as a reward for their outstanding accomplishments. "Voice and Vision" covers more subjects and areas than is normally found in other books. The information is accurate and timely.

Voice and Vision's text is accessible, concise, and crystal clear, whether explaining technical procedures or aesthetic concepts. It's the most comprehensive and useful film production textbook I've come across in over ten years of teaching filmmaking.

To many, crystal radio construction means purchasing electronic components to assemble into radios. The best tinkerers build their own! In The Voice Of The Crystal, author Friedrichs takes a step back in time to reveal the secrets of constructing all the necessary components "from scratch".

Inside this volume you'll find 185 pages of practical information on the fabrication of electronic components suitable for use in building crystal radio sets. Basic theory and simple analysis are combined with dozens of examples of historical practice, work by contemporary experimenters, and construction details for many instruments fabricated by the author himself.

Inside are discussions and plans for three different homemade headphones, (including one fabricated from cigarette lighter parts,) detectors, fixed capacitors, a rotary variable condenser, single layer, spider web and basket coils, and a precision double-slider coil. Throughout, the author shares his thinking and practical experience in the construction of these devices. The Voice Of The Crystal is profusely illustrated, containing well over 120 photos and hand-prepared illustrations.

When the hustle and bustle of modern life has you totally frazzled reach for any of Jeanine McMullen's books and slow down. Her descriptions of life on a small farm in Wales are not only delightful but a real hoot. Who would have thought a horse named Doli could create such pandominium? And her little whippet, Merlin; you will never forget some of the stunts he pulls. The goat Little Nana (rebel that she is) is also always causing one sort of trouble after another. I just wish Jeanine had written more than three books about her life in Wales.

The marvelous sequel to "A Small Country Living", this book continues with the amusing and touching experiences of a BBC radio broadcaster's life on a tiny farm in the mountains of Wales. Her writing is wonderfully evocative, and her observations are most often funny or ironic. Think of "Under the Tuscan Sun" with looney livestock in place of the luscious food and lots more clouds and damp. Years later, Jeanine McMullen remains one of my all-time favorite writers. And if you love dogs, you'll especially enjoy her books--they're all keepers!!

Students loved doing these plays

A year ago I was looking to do some technology projects with my students and started looking for some scripts online. I came across this book and got it at the library. I split into 4 groups and had them practice, then had them record their parts and their sound effects on Garage Band. Since these were second graders, I did all the editing myself, but the end product was mesmerizing. I used their advice on music and found all of the direction most helpful. I was able to post it to the web for the listening enjoyment of parents and kids alike. The kids' favorite one was the funny sci fi, but Night on Bear Mountain they also enjoyed.

I would love them to do another book of similiar scripts for younger students and also another one at this higher level. As an old time radio fan there was nothing like hearing these radio shows that we had performed ourselves.

Classroom teachers who cringe at the thought of costumes and make-up and memorizing lines for elementary students will love practicing and performing these radio dramas. The stories are fun and suited for intermediate elementary students from 4th to 8th grade. The book gives valuable information on sound effects and how to tape the production for the best results. My classroom had a blast and the parents loved getting a copy of the tape.

1940

1940 is Kafka an aquired taste to be sure. The the main chracters are Elisabeth Rofman age early 40's, Jewish, and a medical illistrator, Dr. Eduard Bloch an Austrian Jew, Doctor, age mid 60's and Daniel, Elisabeth Rofman's, child age almost 18.

Dr. Bloch had treated the family of Adolf Hitler during Hitlers youth and tended to Hitlers mother during her last illness breast cancer as well as the young Adolf. His reward from Hitler was safe passage out of Europe in 1940 to the United States. There are many sub plots that revolve around this fact.

Elisabeth is the mother of Daniel who has spent most of his life in a mental institution in Baltimore where the Doctors wanted to perform an opeation on his, we are not told what procedure was to be done but that it would result in his castration. Daniel escapes from the institution and ends up staying with Dr. Bloch in the Bronx where the doctor ended up after escaping from the Nazis.

The main minor characters include Eliasbeths ex-husband, her father, two NYRD dectectives, an employee of the home, a female friend and an instructor at Johns Hopkins.

Since this is Kafka thats about all I can give you. One quote from the story that describes the authors view of the Bronx,"... cement buildings set in from of a concrete sky." The text like many novels about Jewish culture is full of Bibical references and plays on names and like Kafka most of the plots and sub plots are not resolved.

I very much enjoyed this novel.

A complex and captivating story about loss, power, honor and hope
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-03
1940, first and foremost, is a beautifully crafted book. It captures a time-period and portrays a cast of characters with eloquence and realism. With varying tempos and scenes, it often feels fugue-like as its several parallel stories intertwine and play off each other, building to a crescendo at the end. Despite an aversion to the book's premise, or perhaps because of its taboo nature - does one really dare to humanize Hitler in a portrayal of his youth? - readers will be drawn in and challenged to travel along with its narrator (Dr. Bloch) and, ultimately, his creator, Jay Neugeboren, as they courageously face this topic and others without flinching. Can we say the same for ourselves?

Neugeboren has written a complex, deeply analytic book about memory, attachment and loss, about mental health and mental illness, about power and impotency, about honor and responsibility, and, ultimately, about hope. Most poignantly and not least of all, this is also a love story, written from the heart, between two separate souls, an older man and a younger woman, who discover a comfort, a connection, and a caring that will make them cherished soul-mates.

THE 1940'S RADIO HOUR begins with a behind the scenes look at a small time radio variety show prior to going on the air. About a third of the way into the play, the cast get together to actually perform their one hour radio show. At this point in the play, the audience "becomes" the studio audience for WOV and what follows is an example of the radio shows that were so popular in the late 1930s and throughout the 1940s. This play is kind of unique and provides a great experience for actors, techies, and directors. The cast is truly an ensemble and there isn't a small role. So sit back and relax and enjoy a trip back through time to the good old days of yesteryear.

The 1940's Radio Hour is a wonderful oppurtunity for any theatre organization to showcase a wonderful ensemble of talent. The set requirements are as flexible as your budget. The music sells itself. If by some misfortune, people are not familiar with the title of the show, then list all of the songs which are in the show on your poster and you are bound to have a string of sell out standing room only performances. This show does not have one bad role in it. Each character one stage has one if not several moments to shine. The orchestra is a vital part of the show as they and the cast are onstage for this live radio broadcast on Dec. 24, 1942. If you love big band music, if you love torch songs, if you like beautiful harmonies THIS IS THE SHOW FOR YOU! I am in the process of of getting ready to direct it for the third time and can safely say that it is probably my favorite musical to direct. I will also tell you that this musical is full of magic and audience will love it, not only because of the moments created onstage, but because they get to participate by being the audience at this live radio broadcast. Do yourself and your community and your cast and crew a favor: direct this show now!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

Ed Heaberlin

I create full web marketing plans for my clients who want to break into the Internet via the web with a focus on search marketing and call-to-action oriented content. This little book takes note of several emerging Internet-based marketing trends.

With insights and latest data on the full range of media, including TV, radio, internet (incl. rich media), outdoor and much more, plus Top 100 Markets, at-a-glance section organization, and a helpful glossary, this pocket-sized reference is a quick, lightweight companion on the way to the office, cab or flight. Take it to the hotel and review before the big client meeting. There are tons of ways to make the most of this handy tool. I've seen how it can make the difference when quick numbers and insights are what's needed to sketch out a media buying plan.

I just completed reading Randall Davidson's fine book on the history of what is now Wisconsin Public Radio. As a former WPR reporter, I found it both entertaining and fascinating. One of the best unexpected aspects of the book are the wonderful pictures, detailing the roots of radio. There's one in particular that stays with me: a shot of the first car equipped with a "radio." Hey, watch the wires! 9XM Talking would be a perfect text for a radio history course or for anybody who's into radio in a big way.

I really enjoyed this history of 9XM/WHA Radio. The author managed to combine an enjoyable, readable narrative with solid, well-documented historiography. Plus he demonstrates his full understanding of the terminology of broadcasting - no annoying mistakes in "radio-speak" in this volume! A good book - recommended highly.
