Each kitty character sports his letter as a springboard for a journey through literature, history, mythology, and entertainment. This volume is rich with visual and intellectual energy.
Alphabetical Playtime with Felines and FontsReview Date: 2007-11-20
The pages are filled with Gaily gamboling gallant globe-trotters, and Happy, haughty, Intelligent incredible Jumping jocular Kitties, apparently quoting Keats and Kafka.
Literary leitmotif leads to lots of Merry, magical moments, and Naturally Occurring Phenomenon, presumably Quite Regular behavior relating to this Serene, superior species.
Though Tiny, the tome is a treasure trove for people who love cats, and Unsurprisingly, it's a very Visual tribute, Waxing warmly and whimsically as the Xenophobes and Xenophiles Yawn, and then Zealously seek out the best place for some ZZZZZZs.

Okay, that was fun - this is essentially a compact coffee table book for people who love Cats. The concept is to share little stories and snippets about cats, going through the alphabet in order, and using a different font for each letter. Extremely well presented, with gorgeous photographs of our feline friends, this might be a good gift for someone on your list, but maybe not a good choice for your dog, bird or pet rat.

The story of an Englishman who is on a trip through Patagonia to collect animals for his own private zoo, this book manages to bring out the animal lover in any reader. The descriptions of the land, the people, and the animals are beautifully crafted in well done, straight forward prose. I highly recommend it.

Hunting for Wild Times (and Animals) in ArgentinaReview Date: 2006-07-09
I devoured this book as part of a reading program I planned for myself for a trip to Patagonia. The first half of the book is set in two areas in Patagonia that I planned to visit: Puerto Deseado in the south, once visited by Darwin on his circumnavigation of the earth on the Beagle, and the large wildlife preserve at Peninsula Valdez, near Puerto Madryn. There, Durrell visited penguin rookeries; saw the breeding grounds of sea lions and elephant seals; and saw guanacos, Geoffroy's cats, rheas, and tinamous.
From Patagonia, Durrell went to the area around Jujuy in the tropical northwest of Argentina. There, he went into collecting mode as he employed locals to track down wild animals that were being kept as pets by the indigenous population.
Durrell's encounters with the local people are funny and at times heart-wrenching, as when he finds a self-taught naturalist named Coco who must work at a sawmill to make ends meet. But Durrell's encounters with animals are utterly hilarious, as his attempts to tame a captured Geoffroy's cat (gato montes).
One of the best chapters relates to the difficulties that Durrell has in exporting his animals and getting all his bureaucratic ducks in a row. His final departure on a ship bound to Europe is held up until a last minute solution satisfies a particularly mule-headed customs official.
I enjoyed this book so much that I plan to read several more of Durrell's works soon. It is hard to believe that the author is the brother of novelist Lawrence Durrell, author of THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET.
a great book by one of the best zoologist authors everReview Date: 2003-07-11
Durrell was one of the first naturalists to develop the notion of captive breeding to ensure the survival of endangered species. He obviously cares deeply about the animals that he collects and goes to extra ordinary lengths to make them happy and keep them healthy. His descriptions of caring for a sick taper, even sleeping beside her to comfort her, are delightful. His wrangle with custom's officials are amusing, and his description of a plain trip in Argentina is particularly hilarious.
Also, Durrell's tireless work and observations were sometimes the first and best studies into how to care for these animals in captivity. When possible, he takes his specimens from private owners, rather than taking them from the wild. People like Durrell were not responsible for the endangerment of these animals. He worked for the salvation of many species and was probably responsible for the continued survival of some today.

Whole Health for happy dogsReview Date: 2006-06-27
If you love your dog, get this book!Review Date: 2007-12-22
Elliot and Bloomer start by outlining how a healthy dog actually appears and acts, all the way from his outer coat to his innermost attitude and personality, providing a user-friendly checklist. All chapters have beautiful photos, illustrations, and bulleted points that make it easy and fast to grasp the many helpful suggestions. The authors present common canine diseases and their causes, give us detailed information on how to choose the veterinarian that is right for our dog, and explain a variety of holistic health care options (such as acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, massage, and essential oils).
They also discuss the pros and cons of vaccination, the needs of dogs at different ages, and solutions to common mental health issues. Their explanation of food and nutrition is especially enlightening, culminating with the many benefits of a raw food diet. There is an important chapter on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention as well as more detailed information on both natural and conventional remedies to boost our dogs' general health.
The book ends with a much needed discussion of environmental toxins and natural solutions to them. Of the four helpful appendices, my favorite is a detailed table stretching 3 pages listing common ailments together with their suggested natural remedies and appropriate dosages.
If you want your dog to be as healthy and vibrant as he can be, follow the invaluable suggestions in this easy-to-read book. Its excellent information and upbeat tone will steer you in the best possible direction for your canine companions!

A Pet Owner's Dream BookReview Date: 2006-08-09
"Whole Health" is appropriately titled because this book looks at the "whole picture" and brings to light everything in the house, yard, environment and food that effects a dogs health. There are so many things to consider that we do on a day to day basis. Did you ever think of what that floor cleaner is doing to your dog when he licks a crumb off the floor or walks across it with wet paws? Natural pet care is more than what your dog eats. The authors take it a step further by offering additional resources for expanding your knowledge to give your pets the healthiest life that you can.
This is a book that I will enjoy reading again and referring to many times. My two dogs are moving around better and I can tell they are feeling better and happier. Thank you Kim and Jill for your passion and dedication to providing better lives for our furry companions.
At long last! A book that's REALLY about natural pet care!Review Date: 2006-06-30

A Wonderful Book!Review Date: 2008-07-03
Once I finished the winter section I waited until the first day of spring to start sampling the vignettes on spring, and I am viewing this spring with new appreciation.
Since then I have given this book twice as gifts ~ and both were well-received and are currently being read much in the same fashion as I am reading my volume.
If you are a nature lover, or you know one I highly recommend this book!

work in other periodicals such as Fly Rod & Reel, know him to be a tough,
unyielding proponent of sound conservation. Woe to the public official
charged with protecting the environment who finds himself in the sights of
Ted's pointed pen after failing to carry out his job, whether by design,
indifference or incompetence.
Ted's writing grabbed me the first time I read his Audubon column "Incite."
Even though I was an immediate fan of his work however, it wasn't until I
read his first book, The Insightful Sportsman, that I discovered the poetic
quality of his writing. His elegant prose is most evident in "Fairy
Diddling." "Fairy Diddling" (fairy diddles being a nickname for flying
squirrels) is an engaging peek into the lives of these capricious little
characters, who don't emerge from their tree cavities until after the sun
has set. The piece concludes with this evocative sentence: "They are out
there now, wherever the globe has whirled into its own shadow, haunting
woods you thought were spiritless, flying between the cold moon and the
earth, jesting to Oberon - and accomplishing the important work of keeping
the night what it was meant to be."
Now comes Wild Moments, a sampling of Ted's Earth Almanac columns gathered
together for publication. While The Insightful Sportsman is largely a
collection of his hard-hitting investigative columns, this new book reflects
the soft side of a man whose passion for the natural world is second only to
a deep love for his family. In the preface he tells us that these short
essays, packed with fascinating but largely unknown facts about birds, fish,
mammals, insects and plants, celebrate the beauty and magic of nature.
The book is divided into four sections - one for each season of the year.
Winter includes an essay on ruddy turnstones. Ruddy turnstones are
shorebirds that flip over shells and pebbles in pursuit of crustaceans
buried in the sand. Although - as birders - my husband and I have watched
these plump little birds for years, we did not know that one will enlist the
aid of another when encountering difficulty upturning a stone.
Spring doesn't simply arrive for Ted, it comes "as the Northern Hemisphere
leans into the sun..." It is the time when wolf spiders creep from their
burrows in search of food and fairy shrimp hatch in vernal pools. It is
also, of course, the time to witness the elaborate courtship dance of the
male American woodcock.
Ted is big on sharing nature with youngsters, and he recommends taking kids
out to pick berries in summer. While we're out there, we might keep an eye
out for the bright yellow garden spider, whose web is spun with a substance
that is stronger than steel. And if we're in the right place we might see a
flock of nighthawks overhead, foraging on the wing.
"The earth is fat in fall," he writes, "dripping milk and honey into the
mouths of wild creatures and into the souls of humans who will soon be
entering their own form of hibernation in front of flickering fires and
flickering screens."
Ted Williams learned about nature in the same way Henry Thoreau did; he
spent as much time as possible immersed in it. His family owns a "camp" (a
New England term for what we in some other parts of the country would call a
summer cottage) in New Hampshire. He spent much of his childhood at this
camp, one of only fourteen on a 280 acre island. Except for the fact that
his grandfather and uncle took him fishing from the time he was four, there
were no naturalist mentors. His connection with wildlife grew out of
singular explorations of the island. From the time he was six years old, he
rose early and set out alone in a rowboat to travel up into the swamps where
he spent long days attending to the lessons of his outdoor classroom.
Even those who subscribe to Audubon magazine and read Earth Almanac
religiously will appreciate this fine collection, and not only because
previously unpublished material is included. Everyone who cares about
conservation will come away, as I did, with a renewed hope that we are
actually winning the battle. That news, as Ted says, "is remarkable and
uplifting."
Brief poetic vignettes into the natural worldReview Date: 2008-01-26
These wild moments are organized by season. Starting with winter, Williams introduces us the sometimes hidden treasures of this time when we humans spend far too much time indoors; from watching ducks to studying how sap freezes on the bark of hardwoods, the reader's eyes are opened to the how life continues in the darkest end of the year. With spring, Williams marvels at the flight of the bumblebee and the birth of fairy shrimp in shallow pools of water, and he observes the birth of flowers and the courtship of terns. Come summer, he seeks out freshwater jellyfish and the nighttime antics of goatsuckers and nighthawks. As fall approaches and the leaves turn from green, Williams watches the rutting of deer and elk and the hoarding of woodpeckers and jays.
The best approach to reading this collection of stories about the nature that surrounds us all, is with these seasons, maybe a couple pages at time while you eat your lunch and become inspired to seek out the wild moments that all around you.

2 stars = Don't bother, clean your bathroom instead.
3 stars = Wasn't a waste of time, but it was time wasted.
4 stars = Good book, but not life altering.
5 stars = This book changed my world in at least some small way.
Wild MomentsReview Date: 2007-07-15
Wild Moments: Reveling in Nature's Signs, Songs, Cycles, and Curious Creatures is an extremely informative book. However, as this work is divided into dozens of short individual description type essays this book reads more like a poetry book. Thus, the reader feels at ease while learning about nature and not overwhelmed by clinical scientific descriptions. Furthermore, as this book covers so many different nature topics, most any reader will easily find his or her favourite topics. Moreover, this book focuses on both animal and plant species that are common worldwide and those that are only found in very specific areas of North America. This unique aspect of the book challenges the reader to look for the species common to his or her area as well as to learn about rarer animals or plants that may be completely new to him or her.

I had picked up a few tips from other riders, but when I purchased the Linda's book, things seemed to click, from breathing to helping me ease the tension in my back. I would try a few exercises before I mounted and while I was mounted. My mare was more relaxed. I think that this book (and video) helped.
I recommend getting the book and the video. The book is great with photos and more in-depth instruction of technique and postures. It is recommended that if you are new to yoga, like myself, that you read the first few chapters before attempting the postures. The video is helpful for those who wish to work with voice instruction and movement instead of flipping through pages and trying to execute what they've just read.
