This book has everything about dogs. EVERYTHING. Breeds, how to raise a puppy, how to treat a sick dog and such as that. It even has little info boxes throughuot the whole book. It even has 101 activities you can do with your dog. It even has over 200 breeds of dog in the breed section. It even has EVERYTHING. A VERY good resource!

I am a new dog owner, never had any experience with any dog ever. So naturally I was a tad uninformed about the subject. This book changed all that. This book is an incredible resource. It covers every conceivable thing about dogs. From A to Z. Plenty of color pictures and charts. This is a great resource. So good it's worth it's weight in gold, to me at least. I learned so much. I took the time to read the whole dang thing--iyt took a while--and I know I will return back to it in the future as I need to. This is a great reference if you know nothing about dogs. You won't be disappointed.

This is the worst dog book I have ever owned. I've been breeding and showing dogs for 20 years. I picked this book up and thought it might make a good general reference book. I was so disappointed when I got home. I felt like half of the material in it came directly from the Humane Society's web site. Much of the information in the book, which should be factual, is half-researched opinion. I can find better information than this on the Internet. The book hasn't been particularly well proofed or edited, either. Very disappointed.

I was not going to write a review of our own book, kinda silly to do that and certainly not helpful to others. However, Dr. Jan's review is deeply troubling. It's not clear to me if she actually read the book. To say The Soul of a Horse is shallow, ego driven, religious zealotry cannot be farther from the mark. Joe describes his first humbling experience in the round pen with Cash as if the reader is actually there, watching the spider crawl across his new boot barn boot (this from a reader email), and the tears streaming down Joe's face when Cash makes the decision to "Join-Up" with him have been shared by many a reader.
When I called her to offer her a refund of the purchase price of the book, she said that was not necessary. I was clear, I thought, in my discussion with her that we were very sorry that she was so disappointed with the book and merely wanted to offer to reimburse her for what was obviously a waste of money to her.
The resources section contains volumes that show we do not espouse that only one way, one clinician, is to be followed, but rather the book is replete with examples of our culling through the vast amount of information, and mis-information to provide the reader with a framework to boldly embark on their OWN journey. Your own journey may be with horses, with teenagers, with employees, students, or any other type of relationship that you want to go to the next level. A level that deepens when you look at the relationship from the other side of the lead rope.
So, for people pondering whether to embark on the journey of The Soul of a Horse, I hope you will read the other 33 glowing reviews :).

Years on the ground or under saddle do not a horseman make. It is the depth of understanding through passion that translates to feel and feel to knowledge. Joe Camp's passion for both horse and human pours from his heart and through his pen.
Regardless of your experience with horses ~ love `em, own `em, would love to own `em ~ Soul of a Horse speaks to the heart of those who always wanted a relationship with a horse but did not know it was possible. It speaks to the heart of others who believed there must be a better way, a natural way to care for horses but lacked the knowledge or courage to buck the set of assumptions that go unchallenged. (Accepted practices that harm horses and endanger humans.) Still others are taken by how the lessons from the herd easily translate to better human relationships.
Joe Camp's ability to weave a captivatingly beautiful fictional story, together with his self-effacing personal experience is refreshing and delightful.

[...] I thought,"Great someone has written a book about the soul of a horse, finally!!!The book is biographical of Camp's experience with his horses.
I was deeply disappointed. Unfortunately this book is much more about the ego of Joe Camp than the soul of the horse. He preaches Natural Horsemanship ala Monty Roberts videos, horses are to be out on pasture n a herd, with no shoes, and that is the only way to care for horses. Not only that but, he has the hubris to tells everyone he meets that that is the case.
When people think they have all the answers. They never do. Joe Camp has the fervor and lack of experience, knowledge and discernment of a newly converted religious zealot. This is often not the best attitude whether with horses or people.
Nonetheless this book does offer some advice that many seasoned "I've always done it this way" horsemen could do well to consider. It discusses having a relationship and understanding the conditions a horse is under that may cause them to do what they do. It is important not to accept advice from "experts" just because they have a title or a reputation. He makes important points about tolerating a certain amount of fear and discomfort in our relationships with horses (as we should with people) to learn and grow.
I become concerned because people take this as religion and decide to practice it. They go out in their back yard with a lot of hubris and no sensitivity and humility. Horses have horse power and people can be badly hurt.
I have raised and trained horses for over 20 years and some have competed and won on the "A" jumping circuit and in dressage. I strongly believe my horses are my partners. I have used "natural hosemanship techniques" and have found some to be useful very much depending on the horse and the situation. All horses are different. I have used the join up which I had seen demonstrated many times by qualified experts and looked at DVD's, with most of my horses. It works about 80% of the time. There are other ways to do the same thing. I had one 3 yr old decide he would rather jump out of the 6'high round pen than join up. He won't join up in the round pen but will do anything for a horse cube and constantly follows me around to the point that he is a total pest.(I only use cubes for training and don't carry them with me.) All it takes is a finger to make him do all kinds of maneuvers, but join up..in the round pen..no way. Another mare I had joins one minute and not the next. She is just not the country club type. She has won in the >er 4' jumpers on the A circuit and is a well acknowledged "challenge with enormous talent".
Each horse must be looked at as an individual which is not brought out well in this book. I keep my horses in a herd most of the time. There are major disadvantages to this as well. They become herd bound and don't want to leave the herd, and one has to be very alert when out amongst them. If a horse is facing being kicked or bitten by another horse, alternative to being bittten is to run you down, guess who loses.
There is no perfect way and no free lunch. Joe contends that all horses want to be outside on a mountain side. Mine have their choice. They have 6 acres of mountains and trees, but often they hang out at the barn. They want in the barn at night even if I decided they should stay out. The Spanish Riding School in Vienna keeps their stallions in standing stalls. Clearly these horses perform at very high levels, love performing and they have not had problems with stress ulcers.Painting with a broad brush doesn't do a good job with houses or horses.
Inserted in the book is a contrived story of a horse and an Indian boy who follows Lewis and Clark.
My horses have been my very best teachers;they have amazing souls and are profoundly intuitive. This book didn't help me better commune with them.
I believe Joe's heart is in the right place and his motivation in sharing his adventures is to help horses and people. Hopefully, after he has more experience with his horses, he too will become less zealous and be able to lead us more deeply into both ours and our horses' souls. This is a good book for beginners who may feel they are alone in their horse woes. The most important thing with horses and life is to keep one's mind and heart open.
The reader and Joe would do well to expand their horizons by reading works of classical trainers and riders such as Alois Podhajsky of the Spanish Riding School, Linda Tellington Jones, Reiner Klimke among others even if they will never be doing dresssage or English ridingThe New Basic Training of the Young Horse: From the Education of the Young Foal to the First Competition. The Ultimate Horse Behavior and Training Book: Enlightened and Revolutionary Solutions for the 21st CenturyMy Horses, My TeachersComplete Training of Horse and Rider

As my husband and I are only now, in our baby boomer retirement, getting to know our two recently adopted horses, Joe and Charlie, the enthusiasm and wonder with which Joe writes reflects our own experience. Every day is a new lesson learned, joint and muscle pain earned, tears shed and laughter every day. We have found, and continue to find, that our new friends can be as difficult, loving, trying, understanding, forgiving and intelligent as any human one can be, if not more. We thought that we could only bond with our dogs, but these two have shown us that this bond comes from a different place, a place which Joe has put into the words we didn't think we could express.

It is disappointing to me to see Dr. Jan B. Newman, who is supposedly an educated person, so totally miss what Mr. Camp's book, "The Soul of a Horse," has to offer. Every reader will get out of a book only what he or she wants to. That Dr. Newman chose to get so little out of an otherwise excellent and meaningful book is not the fault of the author, or the book. The sad thing here is that such a negative review, actually more of an attack, could cause others who might benefit greatly from this excellent volume to miss concepts, ideas, and resources, that could be at least helpful, and possibly life altering for them and their horses.
Dr. Newman using the example that some of his horses want into the barn instead of preferring the open pasture, is totally meaningless. Those horses may have been barn sour for many years, and so conditioned to the barn that they are uncomfortable any other place. We have all seen horses like that. I can say that all of my horses greatly prefer the open pasture, but that sure doesn't imply all horses do. As Dr. Newman stated, horses are individuals, and there are all kinds of dispositions. Certainly few techniques will work the same way for every horse out there, nor will they work in the same time frame for all horses, but I don't think this book says that either. What it does do is provide a window into a very special relationship that Mr. Camp was able to establish with his horse, Cash, and how that relationship developed. Any statements Mr. Camp makes regarding barefoot horses and natural horse care are all verifiable in the literature. He has simply brought it all together in a beautifully written volume that was a great pleasure for me to read, and will be for most horse owners. That he also provides a listing of excellent resources is just icing on the cake.

Chicken soup for the cat and dog lovers soul is a wonderful book that warms my heart and gives me a happy feeling reading thru the stories and the love people feel for there pets. When I recently lost my beloved siamese cat it helped me to feel better about my "furry baby" passing over the rainbow bridge because I knew he had a wonderful life and he knew he was cherished. All the books in the chicken soup series are very uplifting and spirtual and make people smile, I highly recommend them.

I really enjoyed this book. The main reason I liked it is because it is all about cats and dogs, and I am a hardcore animal lover. Another reason I liked it is because the stories are not made up in someone's mind. These stories are real stories that real people lived through. The last reason I liked this book so much is because you don't have to read it like an ordinary book. You can read it like I did and just jump around to stories that sound good to you, instead of reading the book cover to cover.

In this volume, Mr. Canfield and crew have compiled a smorgasboard selection of short stories about pets who fortify us and make life bearable. Especially poignant to me was "the medicine cat" as I, too, had one named Tosca. She gave up the ghost a few months ago at the age of eighteen years, as I had no way to get to her when she needed support of the kind she gave to me several years ago. They recognize the special love and devotion of animals to bless our hearts and homes.
"Cat lovers will tell you that felines are 'poetry in motion,' living sculptures at rest, and that the warm weight of a purring cat...is a surefire cure for all that ails you."
It is the physical acts of love to bring the gift of life as expressed in "The Healing Touch." I cried as I read "The Language of the Heart" about an unusual rabbit and his healing the hurt of a little girl who'd turned inward and no longer could talk. Something had died in that child which this loving rabbit cured. His innocence and trust had rekindled the same qualities in the child. The loving presence of an animal can heal where words have no effect. Alas, Roger Rabbit bit the tip off my little finger one day, which led me to the ER for a Saran-wrap bandage (to stop the bleeding -- a bandaid wouldn't work) and a tetanus shot. Needless to say, I found him another home.
"A small gesture -- the insistent tap of a cat's paw" about Jack, an adopted stray kitten (like Dante in Troy, Alabama), who grew into Ellen's savior. He woke her from a daydream of tragedy; Star woke me up with that same gesture over and over so that I would not strangle from Acid Reflux. Pets do love and care for their owners. This volume is one I will treasure for years to come. It is full of memories about pet owners' animals, not just cats and dogs.
"Cat lovers will tell you that felines are 'poetry in motion,' living sculptures at rest, and that the warm weight of a purring cat...is a surefire cure for all that ails you."

The D.I. Y. moonlight manual is a money saving customized way to add moonlights to your aquarium. The manual is very easy to follow and the results are fantastic even if you do not consider yourself handy. The end product you create using LEBOS D.I.Y. manual is a very pleasing nightlight effect costing much less than purchasing one or two moonlights from any major dealer or pet supplier. I highly reccomend all of Lebos manuals!

This is a step by step manual that is very easy to follow. After getting the parts together, it only took a couple hours to have a working moonlight, and I'm no electrician. And check out the prices on a "professional" moonlight. Well worth the price.
Very nice and well thought out guide.

This guide for building a moonlight was very easy to follow and was very detailed oriented. There are many pictures and step by step precedures to show exactly what I was supposed to do, and after reading the manuel I was able to build the moonlight in about 30 minutes. It fits great over my tank, and the fish absolutely love it. No skill is needed at all to start this because it is all tought in the manuel. Just a little work, a dab of epoxy here and there and the light is done. Very easy.

Gincy Self Bucklin is the trainer I wish I had had all these years I've spent riding! I have been training with qualified instructors for 18 years, and I have still learned SO much from this book. I cannot say enough about this book and its sequel. This book is wonderful and it FAR exeeded my expectations. I only wish I had these books when I first began riding - I could have saved so much time, trouble and bad habits!

I reccommend this book to everyone who rides and loves horses, whatever level, whatever style. I first bought it because, in my youth having ridden wonderfully kind horses that pretended like I knew how to ride, I wanted to get back into riding when I was in my late fifties. After a year of lessons with a well-qualified instructor, the school horse I was riding got fed up with my mistakes and sent me sailing. Two operations and two years of physiotherapy later, I went back, just to make a point. It took me a year to get back to about where I was before the accident. Then I hit a block. I didn't seem to be making any progress, in spite of two or three lessons a week. That is when i read this book and a lot of lights came on. Gincy's "active hand" transformed an irritated,head-tossing horse to a calm, attentive partner. Once I grasped her explanation of lateral centering, the horses I rode stopped cutting corners. My instructor and the people I ride with started paying me compliments on my position and my progress. I continue to read and reread her books, and the lights are still coming on. Some people may complain about the detail, but if that's the particular problem you're working on, you want all that detail. Someone commented that Gincy writes for instructors, to help them be better teachers, but if you don't have an instructor, or if he knows it all and doesn't think he has to read books, students can learn directly from the book. As Gincy mentions, many instructors know what you should be doing, but don't know how to explain to a student how to do what is an automatic reflex for an advanced rider. It's certainly helped me to understand why my instructor was always saying "shoulders back, heels down!" etc. I reccommend it to my friends, but as someone else mentioned, it's not a book you can lend, because it doesn't come back. And perhaps the best thing about the book is Gincy's wonderful attitude towards horses and understanding their behavior. I found that Gincy accomplishes everything she set out to do in her introduction.

How Your Horse Wants You to Ride: Starting Out, Starting Over
If our horses could have a verbal conversation with us, it would be about how they want us to ride on their backs. So, if that is the information you are looking for, this book will do that for you. Coming to horses late in life, with only weekend trail riding and no ownership in my background, learning to train my horse and ride her has, at times, been overwhelming. All bad habits that horses have are from bad training, not from stubbornness or naturally occurring mean spiritedness. Every interaction we have with our horses teaches them something, good or bad. Gincy is a patient person, I know from interacting with her on her Riding with Confidence list group on Yahoo. She has great insights into muscle memory, fear, breathing, etc. and the way those things cause horses to react in one way or another. How Your Horse wants you to ride is not a quick fix answer. It is deep and thoughtful requiring work on the part of the owner/rider. The reward is as great and worth striving for. After all, if you have a horse, you want to have fun with it, not be fearful of it.

This book has inspired me to work on bareback exercises this summer to retrain my balance. I'm sure my horse will thank me. Having ridden with the author when I was a teenager (40 years ago), I remember the value of the bareback riding after this book reminded me. I have tried to read Sally Swift's "Centered Riding" but just didn't engage me. This book has and I will be applying the lessons to myself.

I started riding quite late in my life and this book has been a great help to me. Whenever I encounter a problem I consult it again and it always gives me new ideas which work. I like especially the mixture of at home, on the ground and on the horse exercises. You can try basics safely first before you mount your horse. I am a Western rider and although its focus is English riding I was able to use it.

The cats in them are diverse and usually don't look like they have been posed. The cats are shown outdoors, lounging, playing, sleeping, or a variety of other natural activities. A great desk calendar to brighten up your every day!

I purchased a different type of cat calendar (which shall remain nameless) and was so disappointed, I threw it in the garbage and ordered this online since I was too late to find it in a store. Reading this book is like having an aquarium-expert friend to take shopping with you. The author tells you which fish are best for beginners, what fish shouldn't even be sold, what qualities a dealer should have, what equipment you should buy, what equipment is a waste of your money, what products are dangerous, what plants are no good but are sold for aquariums anyway, etc. I finally found answers to a lot of questions that other books didn't cover. The book discusses cleaning schedules, necessary floor strength, and moving concerns. It explains water chemistry as simply as possible. There is list of the author's favorite aquarium books and other info sources. He even tells you how you can reach him.
The reasons why I didn't give this book 5 stars are trivial: Hard to make out black + white photos and substandard proofreading. Still, everyone who has or wants an aquarium needs this book.

This is an informative, clear, funny, and brilliant book.
If you are just starting an aquarium, this is the book to get.
The beginning is all about the tanks, lights, and everything before the fish.
There is a section about fish but the photos are black & white so if you want to know more about the actual fish you probably want another book too.
Overall, a great book for beginners!

Are you starting an aquarium? Well, I've been running one for a while, and my dad used to keep one, and I can definitely tell you that it is absolutely critical to have at least one fish book on hand in order to set up your fish tank properly.
To the book. So why is this so hyped and high rated? First of all, it doesn't lie. You will learn why water changes are important, what pH is, and why you don't keep oscars with neon tetras. You will learn how to position and set up your tank, and you will learn the difference between a canister and undergravel filter. And most importantly, you will learn how to keep fish. Like some others have said, this book does mainly focus on the care and setting up on the aquarium, so for the fish and plants it would help a lot to get a separate book that specializes in those, because his descriptions are not that detailed. However, I can nearly guarantee you that you will not fail in your aquatic endeavor with this guide at hand. Good luck, and may your filter never crash when you are on vacation.

WOW! This book was ESSENTIAL to our successful (and fun) entry into the world of fish and aquariums. Great tips, easy to follow directions and explanations of "what, why, when and why NOT", written in a funny (if somewhat corny) manner, this book is easy and fun to read. I actually found myself taking it on a trip - and trust me, I have NEVER taken a reference book on vacation unless I was expecting to work on vacation. So, this book gets five stars. Buy it used if you have to do so (we did). We bought five different aquarium books, and this one was the best, and we refer back to it often.

This is probably not the best showing how to book out there but it certainally teaches you a lot without encouraging you to be a snob that cares about nothing but winning at any cost. It covers a lot of material and though it doesn't teach you EVERYTHING you need to know this book combined to going with some other people to a show made me feel confident enough to start showing my own dogs. I have never forgotten some of the things she said in this book. As I go through the dog showing life events can cause her words to ring in my head and bring me peace such as when I meet the occasional meanie "...but keep in mind the meanest people are often the ones with the least going for them." Ain't that the truth!
D. Caroline Coile is a good author. She writes good breeding articles for Dog World all the time and her book Pit Bulls for Dumies, I think, is the most breed-informative of all the "for Dummies" books on dog breeds. I have or have had Labrador Retrievers for Dummies, Golden Retrievers for Dummies, Rottweilers for Dummies, Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies, and Boxers for Dummies, all by other authors, and, blah, I felt like I was reading a general dog care book with just a tiny amount of breed-specific information you could find ANYWHERE in ANY BOOK. I feel like Coile gets more into explaining the essence of the breed in her book.

I've been a sheltie owner, both of pets, show, and obedience dogs. This book is the best book of any breed book on the market. It covers everything you need to know, and though most sheltie owners aren't going to breed(nor should they), I believe that every sheltie owner should read about the breeding portions, because I've met so many people who think their sheltie should be bred. This book at the very least gives information on that aspect, as some colours shouldn't be bred together due to genetic abnormalities.

The books is very detailed and has a lot of information. I was a little disappointed with it though, as it seems to be geared more towards breeders and people who show their dog.
Now one may argue that the average pet owner does not need THAT much information.. but I would beg to differ. Some parts of the book relating to ownership could have been bigger, while other parts of the book are unnecessary to the average pet owner.
For me, there was far too much information about the breed's standards.. and then the information about mating and whelping... All totally unecessary to me. I could have used more information about training, what to expect as the dog grows, and dog/people socialization techniques. Now, there is *some* information on these areas, but you could probably write entire books on these topics alone; this book could have used more material on these topics.
Still, it is not a bad book by any means. I give it 3 stars as a pet owner, and probably 5 stars if you are a breeder or are into competitive dog shows. I'll average that out to 4 stars overall.

This book has more information than most people will ever need about the breed, and it's very accessible even to the novice owner. Give this one 'paws up'!

This is an EXCELLENT book for the new sheltie owner. Very in depth information, and very easy to read. Contains info for everything from bringing the new puppy home, to basics in obedience and agility training. Only reason she didn't get five ***** stars, is because she got a bit "windy" with long explanations, and it is so easy to read, they aren't necessary. You must have this book!:)
