Jan Tweedie has a very practical approach to training the trailing dog in language and examples that are easy to understand and put to use. One of the best books I own (in my ever expanding library about scent and scent dogs) regarding training a trailing dog and general information about search dogs. A real gem!

Inspiring and Educational Book

This book is well-written and inspiring. As a member of animal rescue, it is hard to find quality information surrounding the process of adoption, and considerations one needs to think about before acquiring a pet. This is a tool which will help so much in the education of the general public that attends animal adoption events in search of a pet.

Janice is clearly a heartfelt animal lover who brings a new perspective to pet ownership and the beauty pets bring to our lives and hearts. Each of my animal fosters has left their pawprints with me, and I've learned so much with each one. I can't wait to read more of Janice's books.

I love this book! Janice offers an insightful analysis of pet ownership
and responsibilities. I particularly enjoyed the stories from other pet owners. Especially when they describe how they acquired their pets or how their pets have enriched their lives.

A great fun read for all animal lovers but most especially for those who wonder what all the fuss is about. They'll understand the joys and benefits of pet ownership after reading this book. (And hopefully, they'll open their hearts to pets in the process)

"This book reaffirms what those of us in rescue already know, caring for an animal will increase the quality of your life and add enjoyment to everyday situations. It encourages our volunteers and it also educates potential animal adopters in the important decision they are making when adopting a new companion. Saving a life will change your life."

This is a lovely book, a "must-read" for animal lovers or pet owners. The stories are sweet and amazing! Many brought tears to my eyes, especially the one about Brandy! As a fellow-Ohioan, it was especially dear but knowing how Kathy needed to find her dog and never gave up is a life lesson for us all.

I grew up on Peachtree Creek in the fifties and sixties, on Woodward Way. So of course I was interested in this book. And the interest turned out to be much more than just the chapters about my own neighborhood. I affirm that the other reviews say the right good things about about it, I just want to add something. The author is a good writer, plain and simple. I don't know how to describe it, if I could I would be a good writer myself, I guess. The best I can say is that I found myself thinking, "This guy is not only taking me to interesting places, showing me interesting things, I'm enjoying a pleasant and comfortable ride." That aspect adds a lot to any book. Enjoy it for yourself.

An enthusiastically recommended read

Published by the University of Georgia Press in cooperation with the Atlanta History Center, "Peachtree Creek: A Natural And Unnatural History Of Atlanta's Watershed" by David R. Kaufman is a photographically enhanced exploration and survey of Peachtree Creek from its headwaters to its confluence with the Chattoochee River. The result of thirteen years of research, study, and exploration, "Peachtree Creek" artfully combines the informational content of scholarly research with the readability of talented storytelling to present a compelling mix of urban travelog, local history, and a clarion call for conservation. Combining historical images with his own superb examples of color photography, this study of a specific and finite watershed is a seminal example of an original work that would be as at home on the shelves of an academic library's Environmental Studies reference collection as it is on the front room coffee table of a non-specialist general reader with an interest in this history of the Peachtree Creek and its five tributaries (North Fork, South Fork, Clear Creek, Nancy Creek, and Tanyard Creek). An enthusiastically recommended read that is as informed as it is informative, "Peachtree Creek" would also serve as an excellent template for similar histories and studies of other American waterways.

Everyone in Georgia is familure with the Chattohoochee River, but few of us are aware of the history of Atlanta's Peachtree and Nancy Creek. Nancy
Creek flows through my back yard on its way to the Chattahoochee and onto
the Gulf of Mexico. I have always wondered where it started and what happens to it after it leaves my neighborhood. This wonderful book tells in great detail the paths that these creeks take, their colorful history and suggest things to do to keep them cleaner, more useful and better
preserved. It is loaded with many stunning photos of the area and its history. This is a great book for one who is interested in Atlanta and
knowing more about the waterways we cross and casually take for granted everyday.

The only thing that I am sorry about it that I did not get to meet the author as he canoed past my veranda.

A Decent Follow-Up...

When I learned a new PSOH series was being made, I was a little bit weary. The first series was excellent, and I was worried the new one would taint my love for the old. But still, I gave it a chance, and I'm very glad I did. The new series possesses the same dark fairytale charm of the old, only with improved art! There is one issue I had, and that is with the second story, where some guy is running D's shop while D's away in America. It never explains who this guy is, or why he doesn't question the fact that this woman is trying to "return" a child; it merely says he the "caretaker". Perhaps it'll explain in a later book.
In addition, I really enjoyed the side-story at the end where it takes a peek in on our dear friend Leon as he continues to hunt D.
All in all, this is an excellent series to pick up if you enjoyed the original. If you're new to the series, I'd recommend reading the original before moving to this one, as PSOH: Tokyo doesn't give much introduction to the characters, and it gives almost no backstory.

Even though I not finish the 1st series, but when I see this book published, I go and buy it right away. For a person has very limited to gender of book, this is the 1st manga that I enjoy to read and re-read after that without any bored. Each story teaches a different lesson of life and mixes with humor and action. This manga has contained everything that a person like me need. Like other says, try this manga and you will love it at the first sign, and never feel bored to re-read it again and again.

For those who have no clue, this is the sequel to PET SHOP OF HORRORS -- a ten volume anthology horror series often described as a cross between THE TWILIGHT ZONE and GREMLINS. It was Matsuri Akino's first manga out of her now eleven written, and it is still her most popular.

The original PET SHOP is my favorite manga series, and I strongly recommend reading it before this sequel. However, the new series seems designed so that a new reader can follow quite well, with the relevant back-story being revealed gradually in the manner of clues to a mystery. One can even read the three Tokyo stories ("Domestic", "Double-Booking", and "Dust") without entirely spoiling the first series, if one then wants to try it. Warning: This does not apply to the side story set in Berlin ("Door"), a previously unpublished story written shortly after the conclusion of the original PET SHOP and never published. It assumes knowledge of the first series and is spoilery.

So what is it actually about? Our protagonist "Count D" once ran a pet shop in LA Chinatown which claimed to sell "love and dreams". Of course, the first series was not called PET SHOP OF LOVE AND DREAMS for good reason, and the Pet Shop soon drew the attention of a suspicious LAPD detective, and eventually the FBI. To make a long story short, D eventually departed LA abruptly and under dramatic circumstances.

Now -- several years later -- this same Count D has just opened a new pet shop in "Neo-Chinatown", a Chinese-themed mall in the Tokyo red light district of Shinjuku. As in the first series, each individual story tells us of one of D's customers and his/her new pet. Meanwhile, D acquires a new ongoing nemesis/foil in building manager Woo-Fei Rau, the son and heir of the owner, a Shanghai business tycoon. The elegant Woo-Fei is the polar opposite of the Count's last antagonist, and in fact seems to have a lot in common with Count D himself . . . such as being wicked. Not that this helps them get along.

Compared to the first series, there are many differences, including more polished artwork. The look is less Gothic and more urban. The tales seem (so far) less gory and more sad. The most striking difference is that in the early volumes of the first series, the individual stories were the stars, the ongoing story developed gradually, and Akino didn't even make up her mind what city it was set in till late in the series. Here in PSOH:TOKYO the Shinjuku setting is being carefully established from the start, and while the individual stories are okay, the real fun is in the ongoing story arc, which starts being developed from the first page.

A friend informed me that there was a new series for Pet Shop out and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I loved the first series and anyone who buys the second series will love it too. If you haven't read the first series it's one you should buy. There are four stories Domestic,Double Booking,Dust and the side story Door. I was wondering if the Detective would catch up with Count D and it looks like he will/did. I say this because he's the caretaker in the story Double Booking! I wonder if the story of that encounter will make it into one of the upcoming books. Now if they'd only make another dvd series, I've always though that the stories on the dvd where only just a small glimpse into the world of Count D!

I have already seen the manga in Japanese. A friend of mine had it. It is on the Shonen-Ai side. But the story is different from any other you have seen and it is beautifully drawn. I hope amazon could sell the art book of these series. A have seen de DVD also it have the 4 stories of the manga that are more on the horror side, but the manga have many more stories, some are romantic ,some are funny some are sweet , some are sad, you won't get bored. Now I'm buying it in English because I want to read the stories.

This book was given to me by my vet after my dog (Nikki) was diagnosed with lymphoma. I read this book in one sitting!! This book was a great resource for me in a time of great sadness. WEAK IN NUTRITIONAL INFO - BUT AN IMPORTANT BOOK TO OWN

I read this little book the first night I got it, and learned a great deal. I only wish I had this info before I lost my beautiful cat friend Taura to cancer almost 5 yrs ago. Even though I thought I was well informed at the time Taura was sick, I've since learned that I really was not, and a book like this could have made a real difference. Veternarians do not always have the skills or knowledge to give thorough information and this book has an abundance of real life info and leaves one with a great deal to think about.

HOWEVER, I was very disappointed in the section on nutrition, which seemed to lack a full view of nutritional options. Even though there was info given on the importance of protein, carbohydrates, etc. the main recommendation for a cancer fighting food was Hills Diet, which felt bias. Some info was given on supplements, but none on other options for foods, such as the possiblity of homemade diets, either cooked or raw, which under the guidance of a good vet could be the answer to good health, depending on the individual needs of each animal. Also, no other quality foods were listed, of which there are many, which with proper guidance may also be appropriate. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OTHER NUTRITIONAL OPTIONS WITH A VET WHO KNOWS NUTRITION, AS MANY DO NOT.

THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK TO HAVE - I will keep it near and hope I will not need it.

After my dog was diagnosed with cancer, I searched the internet for answers, and found this book on Amazon. It is a little book, worth it's weight in gold. It is written by a knowledgeable vet who translates clinical information into a factual, yet compassionate conversation with the reader. By using the website links in the back of the book, I was able to find a world class animal hospital in my area that correctly diagnosed the rare form of cancer my dog has. Seven months later, we are on the road to remission. I still refer to Dr. Downing's book, and am more than thanful to have found it.

Pets Living with Cancer - A Must Read!

This is an excellent book, and if you have ever had, or currently have, a pet with cancer, you deserve a copy of this book.

It takes you by the hand, and explains in easy to understand layman terms, just what the diagnosis of cancer means to you and your pet, in terms of options, cures and hope. It phrases the questions you should ask your vet about any anticipated therapies and operations for the cancer-stricken pet.

The book is positive in outlook, giving pet owners hope, when there seems to be none. Cure types, therapies, and chemotherapy types and kinds are explained. It even discusses nutrition as it relates to saving the pet and `starving' cancer. And research shows diet can play an important role in starving cancer!

The book gives lots of detail; it answers all the questions that the pet owner, in a state of shock after the diagnosis, forgot to ask the vet. It gives helpful hints on how to organize yourself for future vet visits with the cancer-striken pet, and suggests questions you should then ask the vet.

In sum, for anyone with a pet that has cancer - this little book will become your `guide book.'

I'd buy the book `before the event' however, so you have it when you need it.

I have visited the Big Bend more than two dozen times over more than that many years and have never found a book that captured the land and the people as well as this one by Bill Wright. I remember years ago searching for something like this. I could only find a photo book of the canyons back then but this is a book with much greater depth and it did not stop at just the geological. Wright does a top notch job of introducing the wild characters who inhabit the spaces between mountain and desert; the ones who live on the sand road that goes back behind the mesa. You won't regreat adding this book to your home library.

West Texas as it really is

Review Date: 2004-01-05
Photographer and writer Bill Wright comes from the West Texas town of Abilene: roughly eight hours drive at a steady seventy from his beloved Big Bend National Park. In Texas that, along with the fact that he's been visiting the park since childhood, pretty much makes him a local.

Texas has a considerable modern history, quite apart from it's more ancient nomadic inhabitants, and Wright maintains a consciousness of this in his travels through these southern borderlands of the USA. Passport controls do indeed exist at the border bridges into Mexico, along with stern warnings that it is illegal for Texans to carry guns into the neighbouring country, but the border patrols continue for nearly sixty miles across the desert into the USA with major checkpoints ocurring at the towns of Marfa and Marathon. The area South of these checkpoints, where Wright's portraits were made, are known as The Badlands and have been for the past 150 years.

Put simply Wright has an abundance of curiosity, the essential requirement of the documentary photographer; and a considerable degree of patience in the fact that he only really began making this book after a lifetime of visits. Be he visiting with the photographer Etta Koch, writing about "Crazy" Angie, who apparently isn't and operates the theatre at Terlingua Ghost Town, or photographing the rancher Buck Newsome, the white hat line on whose forehead clearly explaining how his life has been spent, Wright, while mentioning the people he was with and the details of the trip, never puts himself over the people or places he introduces to his readers. The border in West Texas might be described as permeable, with several unguarded but regularly used fords exisiting along the river. One such ford exists at a place called Lajitas, today a resort town bought lock stock and barrel by a billionaire and now boasting "the world's only international golf course", but Bill Wright digs deeper under the surface harking back to the time when the ford was an important crossing on the trail from Mexico city to the Spanish province of Nueva Viscaya. He remarks upon the "politically constructed" nature of the border between the States and their Southern neighbour, and the fact that locals continue to move freely across the Rio Grande even to this day. In an aside his thoughts wander to the realisation that where in the past Texas Rangers patrolled these areas, to keep international cattle rustling to a minimum, today the trade is reversed and the border patrols and enforcement agencies are more concerned with preventing the importation of illegal drugs. But for the local populace life continues much the same and Spanish remains the predominant language.

In many ways the story as a whole is about Wright and his experiences, but more about the manner in which the place molded him over the years than any form of personal recollection. For Texas is very much about the land. He has been absolutely true to his subjects and in this book he presents that very rare sort of travelogue that will be enjoyed by visitors, people who only ever visit far flung lands from the comfort of their own living rooms, and especially the residents of the Big Bend itself; who will understand.

The Power of Horses is a wonderful, unique collection of memories of Country Music legends love affairs with horses. Each star has a different take on the influence their horses have had in their lives - both as youngsters & in later years. These stories are inspirational to many aspects of life.
This is a book that any horse person or country and western music fan needs to own. It is a difficult book to put down once you start reading. It is easy to read, well thought out and flows well.

This book is a must for anyone who has or is interested in horses. All the top country music artists tell about the good things horses bring to their lives. There are some great photos in the book including Brad Paisley, Kix Brooks, Lynn Anderson, Toby Keith, Charlie Daniels, Clay Walker, and Tommy Shane Steiner. You will also find that the author has done an outstanding job of putting together the history of each of the country music legends.

The book is a great gift for kids or adults, is easy to read, the stories flow nicely and are very well written. I found it very informative as well as entertaining. Anyone who likes horses and or country music would REALLY like this book! Be sure to get extra copies to give as gifts!
I loved the authors use of words and the selection of photos that were used. The stories will make you laugh, cry and wonder.

Since history was first recorded there has always been a bond between humans and the incredible animal; which has meant so much to our survival and very existence through out the years. I don't think Lisa could have found a better way of bringing horses the recognition they truly deserve than by sharing some unforgettable stories from country music's finest stars. In her book, "The Power of Horses," Lisa proves that even in this modern age of mechanical genius, as we surpass our wildest dreams. This is a book that any horse person or Country and Western music fan needs to own. I started reading it and read it from cover to cover in 1 day. It is fun to read, and contains many very inspirational stories.

I stayed up all night reading this book and I liked it so much I have ordered several more for my friends. All the top country music artists tell about the good things horses bring to their lives, and there are some great photos in the book, too! Brad Paisley, Kix Brooks, Lynn Anderson, Toby Keith, Charlie Daniels, Clay Walker, and Tommy Shane Steiner are all in The Power of Horses, 18 stars in all. The book is a great gift for kids or adults, is easy to read, the stories flow nicely and are very well written. Very informative and entertaining at the same time. Anyone who likes horses and/or country music would REALLY like this book! Do yourself a favor and consider this book! Would I buy it again? I already did!

The combination of breath-taking photography, and insightful and inspiring prose create an awesome yet humbling book. Its appeal is universal--everyone can learn, if we listen to its message.

This book is one of the simplest, yet one of the most inspiring and enjoyable books I have ever read. The photography in it is amazing and Greive deffinately has a way with his words. In addition to this intriging visiual presentation, there is much to learn in this book as well. Learn about endangered and threatened animals thoughout the world while looking at unique images of them. This is a must read for everyone and it should be a required book for schools throughout the world to read instead of many other required books that have no appeal to students.

In addition, on the inside cover it reads, "BTG (author) is donating all his author royalties from the worldwide sales of Priceless to his principal wildlife conservation charity, the Taronga Foundation." Thats gotta say something about the book in itself!!!

This book made me realize, when Mom made us say "grace" before meals as kids, it wasn't for that God guy, it was for us. I recommend this reading for our brains owners manual. Enjoy

This book was recommended to me by a friend who had a near death experience. I can't thank him enough for turning me on to it.

Anyone with a background in Eastern philosophies would have thought these experiments would be "no-brainers". But the Western world demands scientific proof. And even when they get it, if it doesn't conform to their paradigm, they shoot the messenger. Yep. Nice legacy.

How refreshing to find someone who wasn't worried about their reputation, but was seeking knowledge. It can't be coincidence that someone with Clive's background would undertake these fascinating experiments and ultimately come up with the information he did.

After I finished this book, I always apologize every time I turn on the hot water in the sink.

I have heard of the work of Cleve Backster in many different places over the years, heard a few radio interviews with him (Art Bell, Jeff Rense, Whitley Streiber, George Noory) and finally, he's written a book explaining it all.

His work does seem to confirm the work of others (who are, to be sure, "newbies" compared to Mr. Backster), such as Lynn McTaggart, as well as some of the late night assertions of Whitley Streiber's strange visitor discussed in his book, "The Key," as well as the Chinese and Japanese concepts of chi and ki, respectively -- or "The Force" to those of us in the Star Wars generation, which apparently borrows liberally from the concepts of chi/ki (see Glen St. John Barclay's excellent book, "Mind Over Matter: Beyond the Bounds of Nature" for a most interesting read as well).

Lots of interesting data in Mr. Backster's book ... quite an ideal method to interest a young mind in the field of science, I'd bet.

This book is a must-have.

Review is to see again.

I've read the book and the information is amazing. Backster never claims "proof" - but does use controls. Here is an excerpt from a fact sheet available on his website:
See Primary Perception Chapter Four pages 64-70
Failures to Replicate
CB: The AAAS symposium presentations by John Kmetz and Arthur Gasteiger revealed problems in their approach. They made it obvious that they were not following proper automation procedures. The plants were in a holding room seven days in advance of their intended use. They then bathed the leaves with distilled water. Any kind of experimenter contact with the plants prior to the actual experiment usage can compromise the experiment by allowing prior attunement between the plant and the researcher rather than the more subtle stimulus provided by the death of the brine shrimp.
John Kmetz had visited my New York City lab in October, 1973, and had ample opportunity to personally observe spontaneous events of biocommunication. Upon his return to San Antonio, rather than to work out the problems involved in total automation and to eliminate human consciousness from his attempted replication of the plant-brine shrimp experiment, it appears that he found information concerning his then current failure in demand. He was invited as a participant at the 1975 AAAS symposium mentioned earlier. Rather than constructively pursuing biocommunication research, which I believe was the original function of the Science Unlimited Research Foundation, Kmetz apparently chose to capitalize on his failure to replicate.

Skepdic: "Backster clearly does not understand why scientists use controls in causal studies."

Anyone who has read either of Backster's published reports knows the opposite is true. Biocommunication observations do not fit into the Scientific Method because they demand spontaneity in order to be authentic. He has always taken a great deal of time and trouble to demonstrate that these recorded responses are not caused by "spurious electric signals within Backster's electronic equipment, amplified and recorded by a system not shielded for such spurious signals."

As Cleve says, You should not be down on what you are not up on.
I say you should read a book before you try to review it! In this case, pass the information of Primary Perception on to the next generation.

It all starts when James and the not so very Sarah, get black lab puppies that look exactly the same, from the same litter. On Pet Day, both James and Sarah bring their Black Labs. They both get loose. This is when it turns into a real puzzle. Finding the puppies leads Mandy Hope (who loves animals) and James (the owner of one Black Lab puppy)to some great adventures. It's a very exciting book. It's one of the very few books I actually enjoyed. I couldn't put it down! I recommend this book for kids 7-11. I suggest you read Puppy Puzzle now and read all the - packed adventures that happen in this awesome book!

Puppy Puzzle is a fun book about a nine-year-old girl named Mandy, and two little puppies, Licorice and Blackie. Mandy is an animal lover, and though she doesn't know everybody in her town, she certainly knows every animal. Both her parents are veterinarians, and they have enough responsibilities with other people's pets. When a litter of puppies arrives in the Hope's animal hospital, Animal Ark, Mandy does not get to keep a single one, but she does keep in touch when two of the puppies end up staying in Welford. Mandy's new friend, James, chooses the runt of the litter, Blackie, and Licorice, the largest puppy, is bought by the snot-nosed Sarah Drummond. As the puppies grow, the three children begin to realize that training puppies is a lot harder than it looks, and, after a catastrophic `Pet Day' at their school, both puppies escape! It is up to Mandy and James to find the puppies, and, of course, tell them apart.

--I have to read 100 childrens books for a class project; this is definitely one of my favorites!

Mandy and James are always bringing animals into Animal Ark, Mandy's parents veterinary office. In this story, James and a girl from school, named Sarah, get matching black lab puppies. Guess what? They get away on "Pet Day" at school! They find one puppy, but which one is it? It is a race against time to find the other puppy before he gets hurt.

I liked this book!

Welford Elementary School is having a pet show, and James and Sara are both bringing in their new puppies. The only problem is, is that they look exactly the same. Will James and Sara figure out which dog is who's before it's too late?
