Inspiring and Educational BookReview Date: 2008-05-28
Janice is clearly a heartfelt animal lover who brings a new perspective to pet ownership and the beauty pets bring to our lives and hearts. Each of my animal fosters has left their pawprints with me, and I've learned so much with each one. I can't wait to read more of Janice's books.

and responsibilities. I particularly enjoyed the stories from other pet owners. Especially when they describe how they acquired their pets or how their pets have enriched their lives.
A great fun read for all animal lovers but most especially for those who wonder what all the fuss is about. They'll understand the joys and benefits of pet ownership after reading this book. (And hopefully, they'll open their hearts to pets in the process)

Creek flows through my back yard on its way to the Chattahoochee and onto
the Gulf of Mexico. I have always wondered where it started and what happens to it after it leaves my neighborhood. This wonderful book tells in great detail the paths that these creeks take, their colorful history and suggest things to do to keep them cleaner, more useful and better
preserved. It is loaded with many stunning photos of the area and its history. This is a great book for one who is interested in Atlanta and
knowing more about the waterways we cross and casually take for granted everyday.
The only thing that I am sorry about it that I did not get to meet the author as he canoed past my veranda.

A Decent Follow-Up...Review Date: 2008-05-18
In addition, I really enjoyed the side-story at the end where it takes a peek in on our dear friend Leon as he continues to hunt D.
All in all, this is an excellent series to pick up if you enjoyed the original. If you're new to the series, I'd recommend reading the original before moving to this one, as PSOH: Tokyo doesn't give much introduction to the characters, and it gives almost no backstory.
best manga ever!Review Date: 2008-05-10
Another Moth to the FlameReview Date: 2008-05-05
The original PET SHOP is my favorite manga series, and I strongly recommend reading it before this sequel. However, the new series seems designed so that a new reader can follow quite well, with the relevant back-story being revealed gradually in the manner of clues to a mystery. One can even read the three Tokyo stories ("Domestic", "Double-Booking", and "Dust") without entirely spoiling the first series, if one then wants to try it. Warning: This does not apply to the side story set in Berlin ("Door"), a previously unpublished story written shortly after the conclusion of the original PET SHOP and never published. It assumes knowledge of the first series and is spoilery.
So what is it actually about? Our protagonist "Count D" once ran a pet shop in LA Chinatown which claimed to sell "love and dreams". Of course, the first series was not called PET SHOP OF LOVE AND DREAMS for good reason, and the Pet Shop soon drew the attention of a suspicious LAPD detective, and eventually the FBI. To make a long story short, D eventually departed LA abruptly and under dramatic circumstances.
Now -- several years later -- this same Count D has just opened a new pet shop in "Neo-Chinatown", a Chinese-themed mall in the Tokyo red light district of Shinjuku. As in the first series, each individual story tells us of one of D's customers and his/her new pet. Meanwhile, D acquires a new ongoing nemesis/foil in building manager Woo-Fei Rau, the son and heir of the owner, a Shanghai business tycoon. The elegant Woo-Fei is the polar opposite of the Count's last antagonist, and in fact seems to have a lot in common with Count D himself . . . such as being wicked. Not that this helps them get along.
Compared to the first series, there are many differences, including more polished artwork. The look is less Gothic and more urban. The tales seem (so far) less gory and more sad. The most striking difference is that in the early volumes of the first series, the individual stories were the stars, the ongoing story developed gradually, and Akino didn't even make up her mind what city it was set in till late in the series. Here in PSOH:TOKYO the Shinjuku setting is being carefully established from the start, and while the individual stories are okay, the real fun is in the ongoing story arc, which starts being developed from the first page.

I have already seen the manga in Japanese. A friend of mine had it. It is on the Shonen-Ai side. But the story is different from any other you have seen and it is beautifully drawn. I hope amazon could sell the art book of these series. A have seen de DVD also it have the 4 stories of the manga that are more on the horror side, but the manga have many more stories, some are romantic ,some are funny some are sweet , some are sad, you won't get bored. Now I'm buying it in English because I want to read the stories.

Cancer is NOT a killer....Review Date: 2000-08-12
WEAK IN NUTRITIONAL INFO - BUT AN IMPORTANT BOOK TO OWNReview Date: 2003-01-01
HOWEVER, I was very disappointed in the section on nutrition, which seemed to lack a full view of nutritional options. Even though there was info given on the importance of protein, carbohydrates, etc. the main recommendation for a cancer fighting food was Hills Diet, which felt bias. Some info was given on supplements, but none on other options for foods, such as the possiblity of homemade diets, either cooked or raw, which under the guidance of a good vet could be the answer to good health, depending on the individual needs of each animal. Also, no other quality foods were listed, of which there are many, which with proper guidance may also be appropriate. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OTHER NUTRITIONAL OPTIONS WITH A VET WHO KNOWS NUTRITION, AS MANY DO NOT.
THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK TO HAVE - I will keep it near and hope I will not need it.

Pets Living with Cancer - A Must Read!Review Date: 2004-12-06
It takes you by the hand, and explains in easy to understand layman terms, just what the diagnosis of cancer means to you and your pet, in terms of options, cures and hope. It phrases the questions you should ask your vet about any anticipated therapies and operations for the cancer-stricken pet.
The book is positive in outlook, giving pet owners hope, when there seems to be none. Cure types, therapies, and chemotherapy types and kinds are explained. It even discusses nutrition as it relates to saving the pet and `starving' cancer. And research shows diet can play an important role in starving cancer!
The book gives lots of detail; it answers all the questions that the pet owner, in a state of shock after the diagnosis, forgot to ask the vet. It gives helpful hints on how to organize yourself for future vet visits with the cancer-striken pet, and suggests questions you should then ask the vet.
In sum, for anyone with a pet that has cancer - this little book will become your `guide book.'
I'd buy the book `before the event' however, so you have it when you need it.

Perfect portrait of the Big BendReview Date: 2007-08-28
I have visited the Big Bend more than two dozen times over more than that many years and have never found a book that captured the land and the people as well as this one by Bill Wright. I remember years ago searching for something like this. I could only find a photo book of the canyons back then but this is a book with much greater depth and it did not stop at just the geological. Wright does a top notch job of introducing the wild characters who inhabit the spaces between mountain and desert; the ones who live on the sand road that goes back behind the mesa. You won't regreat adding this book to your home library.

West Texas as it really isReview Date: 2004-01-05
Texas has a considerable modern history, quite apart from it's more ancient nomadic inhabitants, and Wright maintains a consciousness of this in his travels through these southern borderlands of the USA. Passport controls do indeed exist at the border bridges into Mexico, along with stern warnings that it is illegal for Texans to carry guns into the neighbouring country, but the border patrols continue for nearly sixty miles across the desert into the USA with major checkpoints ocurring at the towns of Marfa and Marathon. The area South of these checkpoints, where Wright's portraits were made, are known as The Badlands and have been for the past 150 years.
Put simply Wright has an abundance of curiosity, the essential requirement of the documentary photographer; and a considerable degree of patience in the fact that he only really began making this book after a lifetime of visits. Be he visiting with the photographer Etta Koch, writing about "Crazy" Angie, who apparently isn't and operates the theatre at Terlingua Ghost Town, or photographing the rancher Buck Newsome, the white hat line on whose forehead clearly explaining how his life has been spent, Wright, while mentioning the people he was with and the details of the trip, never puts himself over the people or places he introduces to his readers. The border in West Texas might be described as permeable, with several unguarded but regularly used fords exisiting along the river. One such ford exists at a place called Lajitas, today a resort town bought lock stock and barrel by a billionaire and now boasting "the world's only international golf course", but Bill Wright digs deeper under the surface harking back to the time when the ford was an important crossing on the trail from Mexico city to the Spanish province of Nueva Viscaya. He remarks upon the "politically constructed" nature of the border between the States and their Southern neighbour, and the fact that locals continue to move freely across the Rio Grande even to this day. In an aside his thoughts wander to the realisation that where in the past Texas Rangers patrolled these areas, to keep international cattle rustling to a minimum, today the trade is reversed and the border patrols and enforcement agencies are more concerned with preventing the importation of illegal drugs. But for the local populace life continues much the same and Spanish remains the predominant language.
In many ways the story as a whole is about Wright and his experiences, but more about the manner in which the place molded him over the years than any form of personal recollection. For Texas is very much about the land. He has been absolutely true to his subjects and in this book he presents that very rare sort of travelogue that will be enjoyed by visitors, people who only ever visit far flung lands from the comfort of their own living rooms, and especially the residents of the Big Bend itself; who will understand.

Tracker-Outdoors.com Review of The Power of HorsesReview Date: 2004-10-14
This is a book that any horse person or country and western music fan needs to own. It is a difficult book to put down once you start reading. It is easy to read, well thought out and flows well.
This book is a must for anyone who has or is interested in horses. All the top country music artists tell about the good things horses bring to their lives. There are some great photos in the book including Brad Paisley, Kix Brooks, Lynn Anderson, Toby Keith, Charlie Daniels, Clay Walker, and Tommy Shane Steiner. You will also find that the author has done an outstanding job of putting together the history of each of the country music legends.
The book is a great gift for kids or adults, is easy to read, the stories flow nicely and are very well written. I found it very informative as well as entertaining. Anyone who likes horses and or country music would REALLY like this book! Be sure to get extra copies to give as gifts!
I loved the authors use of words and the selection of photos that were used. The stories will make you laugh, cry and wonder.

David Selman

Anyone with a background in Eastern philosophies would have thought these experiments would be "no-brainers". But the Western world demands scientific proof. And even when they get it, if it doesn't conform to their paradigm, they shoot the messenger. Yep. Nice legacy.
How refreshing to find someone who wasn't worried about their reputation, but was seeking knowledge. It can't be coincidence that someone with Clive's background would undertake these fascinating experiments and ultimately come up with the information he did.
After I finished this book, I always apologize every time I turn on the hot water in the sink.

We're All Connected ...Review Date: 2005-08-15
His work does seem to confirm the work of others (who are, to be sure, "newbies" compared to Mr. Backster), such as Lynn McTaggart, as well as some of the late night assertions of Whitley Streiber's strange visitor discussed in his book, "The Key," as well as the Chinese and Japanese concepts of chi and ki, respectively -- or "The Force" to those of us in the Star Wars generation, which apparently borrows liberally from the concepts of chi/ki (see Glen St. John Barclay's excellent book, "Mind Over Matter: Beyond the Bounds of Nature" for a most interesting read as well).
Lots of interesting data in Mr. Backster's book ... quite an ideal method to interest a young mind in the field of science, I'd bet.
This book is a must-have.

Failures to Replicate
CB: The AAAS symposium presentations by John Kmetz and Arthur Gasteiger revealed problems in their approach. They made it obvious that they were not following proper automation procedures. The plants were in a holding room seven days in advance of their intended use. They then bathed the leaves with distilled water. Any kind of experimenter contact with the plants prior to the actual experiment usage can compromise the experiment by allowing prior attunement between the plant and the researcher rather than the more subtle stimulus provided by the death of the brine shrimp.
John Kmetz had visited my New York City lab in October, 1973, and had ample opportunity to personally observe spontaneous events of biocommunication. Upon his return to San Antonio, rather than to work out the problems involved in total automation and to eliminate human consciousness from his attempted replication of the plant-brine shrimp experiment, it appears that he found information concerning his then current failure in demand. He was invited as a participant at the 1975 AAAS symposium mentioned earlier. Rather than constructively pursuing biocommunication research, which I believe was the original function of the Science Unlimited Research Foundation, Kmetz apparently chose to capitalize on his failure to replicate.
Skepdic: "Backster clearly does not understand why scientists use controls in causal studies."
Anyone who has read either of Backster's published reports knows the opposite is true. Biocommunication observations do not fit into the Scientific Method because they demand spontaneity in order to be authentic. He has always taken a great deal of time and trouble to demonstrate that these recorded responses are not caused by "spurious electric signals within Backster's electronic equipment, amplified and recorded by a system not shielded for such spurious signals."
As Cleve says, You should not be down on what you are not up on.
I say you should read a book before you try to review it! In this case, pass the information of Primary Perception on to the next generation.
