How Would It Feel? is a fantastical adventure in nature. The readers are transported on the breeze, fall with the rain, shake hands with lightening, swing with the stars, and play tag with the sun. It's such whimsical fun.

I really like the feel of this book. The text flows like poetry and creates a different feeling for page of adventure. The illustrations are bright and playful, further adding to the experience.

Wonderful Book!

Reading this book was a very enjoyable experience for me, and I'm an adult! I can only imagine what it must be like for a kid to read it, or have it read to them. But the book helps with that. It really made me remember what it was like to be a child, and it elicited memories of how much I enjoyed other wonderful books, which were read to me when I was a youngster (and which I later read to myself). And not just vague memories; it brought back sights, and sounds, and smells, and sensations I might otherwise have never again recollected. Mmmmm... I would have loved this book then, and I love it today.

One of the best things about this book is how it stimulates the imagination. The author, and the illustrator are obviously very imaginative, and through this book, they help readers to exercise their own mind`s eye. The questions posed throughout the poem are ones which would seem absurd, and meaningless to an unimaginative person. Yet if you suspend disbelief, and allow your imagination to take you wherever it might, you will enjoy yourself greatly; I guarantee it. Even the most unimaginative "mature grownup" will remember what it was like to daydream in their youth, and to be wowed by things which they did not yet understand; to imaging what things are like, instead of knowing.

This book is remarkable, and I highly recommend it for children of any age (including the grownups ;-).

A wonderful experience for parent and child

I always am surprised when I receive something from a publisher, in this case Bear & Company as Bear Cub Books, and at first glance it may be "off topic" but it turns out to be a sparkling gem that fits perfectly.

In this case the book appeared to be a children's fantasy book. I was curious, however, because of the illustrations on the front cover. They appeared almost "magical" and, of course, I was hooked.

The book is a journey, an adventure. And the theme of the book - very magical and very natural. From the first page that introduces the reader to the first steps of the journey, there are exciting aspects of the artwork for the child and adult to explore together. From the boat flying on a breeze, to dancing on raindrops, or traveling on rainbows, each verse suggests an adventure, each illustration offers exploration for a young mind's eye, and each concept explores an aspect of nature that is only limited by the boundaries of the parent and child's imagination.

The verses question the child, challenging them to fill the story with their own ideas. While the book seems short, the possible conversations between parent and child can make this an entire afternoon's activity, encouraging conversation and quality time between parent and child. This would be a perfect book for a rainy afternoon spent in a comfy chair, where the parent and child share a seat, a book and many stories.

The book maintains a steady theme of exploration in a positive manner. The images are friendly, even when they are exploring something that might be considered scary. There is always a friendly face that could be associated with a parental figure, the child is always represented as having a good time and being kept safe and protected, yet the child is allowed to explore beyond the limits of his own living room. It is freedom yet it is secure.

The themes are from nature. It explores seasonal changes, goes from the depths of the ocean to the furthest reaches of the sky. It explores the natural world, yet it pictures everyday life such as buildings and neighborhoods, reminds the child of home, yet it also explores their home is part of an even larger place called the world.

Run out and get this book for your little ones. Run out and get this book for yourself! Treat yourself to some quality time with your child, or with yourself, as you explore the never ending limits of your own imagination. See if you don't agree with me this is a wonderful concept in children's reading material that will delight again and again. boudica

This darling puppy is sure to appeal to my first graders. The bright colors and easy reading will entice my beginning readers to dive right in to reading! Grocery shopping is an activity children are familiar with and can relate to. I imagine they will enjoy reading about a puppy getting into trouble in the store instead of themselves. I love the way the author shows the children how to forgive in each of her books.

Most likely the best book on horses I own. It is not a horsemanship guide on the "how to's" of owning a horse, but an insirational, moving, motivating book with exceptional photo's and beautiful written words describing why women have the dream of owning a horse and that it is ok do dream this dream especially as an adult.

Thoughtul, spiritual and beautifully photographed...

Quote from the book:
"One of the earliest religious disappointments in a young girl's life devolves upon her unanswered prayer for a horse" (Phyllis Theroux)

Indeed.

The author doesn't quite capture the essence of life long yearning to be with horses; to always dream of owning your own horse and to have that dream just out of your grasp. The above quote from the book comes close to those feelings - and overall the book comes close, but doesn't quite hit the mark.

The title is a bit misleading, or perhaps my expectations got the better of me; the author already lives with horses, has horses of her own, and is in daily contact with horses. Thus, I couldn't quite make the bridge between "If I had a horse" and "how different life would be" within the pages of this book. The text and quotes are more zen like in approach and philosophy, rather than describing life-altering changes.

Nevertheless, this is a BEAUTIFUL book. The text is honest, thoughtful, spiritual and philosophical. The photographs in this book are equally beautiful, and truly compliment the text superbly. The photographer has done a wonderful job capturing the essence, heart and soul of equus.

This is a slim book, less than 1/2" thick, and only 128 pages, but printed in hardcover, and bound on heavy semi-gloss paper. Every single page features full-colour photographs of horses, with the author's insightful text and selection of quotes from various sources.

My only complaint (and it perhaps is a minor one) is that the stars and inspirati of this book - the horses themselves - go unmentioned. The author goes to the trouble to name her sources for the various quotations used, in a bibliography at the back of the book, but there is no mention of who the horses are, their names, what breed, where they're from, etc.

This book also came with a DVD titled "The Beauty of Horses", featuring a generous 21- minutes of live film footage of various horse breeds, from Arabians to Gypsy Vanners, Friesians, Appaloosa's and other horses. The music is a little annoying - but not overly so. How much better it would have been to let the horses speak for themselves in this DVD: the galloping of hooves, nostrils flaring and blowing, the clip-clop of hooves along a beach, horses neighing and snorting, tails swishing, etc. Instead the filmmaker opted to overdub with music and voiceover. This is perhaps a minor complaint, as the DVD production values are really well done, and the horses captured are beautiful to look at and inspiring.

All in all, this is a wonderful addition to add to anyone's equine library, and I am sure horselover's young and old will enjoy looking at this book.

If you know a horse crazy kid, buy them this book and they'll cherish it forever. The cover image is absolutely stunning, and just a taste of what is inside. Beautiful photography, moving writing and inspiring quotes. It's not for little kids, but a horse crazy girl about 9 or 10 will devour it just as much as that horse crazy 40 something. Even if you horses aren't a big part of your life, animal lovers will enjoy it just the same. The included DVD is just icing on the cake. When I was a horse obsessed 10 year old, I would cut pictures of horses out of magazines, newspapers, or anything I could get my hands on. This is the book I wish I had back then.

Perfect Photo and Story Book For Labrador People!
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-22
For someone like me who has spent countless hours, days and weeks in the company of four or more Labrador Retrievers, this book is a hoot. It takes light-hearted look at Labradors, sharing a bounty of beautiful photographs of man's best friends with us, and looking at the personality traits and character qualities that make them the single most popular breed in America today. Labs are among the most social of canines, yet they are remarkably calm and pacific once they know you. Which isn't to deny the fact that they are very active and energetic, and that anyone who lives with one needs to ensure the dog and he or she spend sopme time outside in vigorous play every day. But as the author tells us, we love labradors because they seem to represent the best and most admirable qualities we happen to admire.

Labradors are amazingly loyal, and are quite keyed into your emotional state and sense of well-being. As a person who sometimes suffers from migraines, I can attest that the dogs seem to reconize my symptoms and key their own behavior from this perception of the way I am feeling, being much more willing to simply take a nap with me than usual, since they seem to understand from past experience that the migraine will dirve me back to bed. They show many endearing and remarkable traits, and we find ourselves amazed by just how intelligent, perceptive, and attractive they are as a species.

Labradors also live almost exclusively in the moment, and are ethusiastic and energetic in their pursuit of fun and frolic. Anyone living in their company can attest to the fact that you are never at a loss for entertainment when your Labrador friend is around, and he or she are happy to just be with you, and are almost oo willing and too anxious to show you just how excited they are to have you around. Coming home after a long day's work means a kidn of instant celebration, with four Labradors jumping, barking, and wall-banging, so glad are they to have me back home with them. Find a human who is that glad to see you, and you have found true love, my friend. Yet it is all here in spades with the Labradors, and this entertaining little book will seerve to amuse you, educate you, and sometimes surprise you with its nuggets of information, parcels of knowledge, and bits of wisdom about just why it is that Labradors rule the roost around my house! Enjoy!

Just Labs is a book of few words an magnificent photography. This is not a book that will tell you how to raise your dog, or what kind of food to feed it, or what dog won best of show 10 years ago. It will amuse you and is guaranteed to sit on your desk at work, your coffee table, or your nightstand as a book that will make you smile. It is very easy to read and quite humorous. One section reads:

"Someone once said that it's possible to train a Lab by treating him like a three-year old child; if so then it's no wonder Labs and kids are so inseparable. Imagine a guardian who never sleeps, one with the eyes and ears to rival the best security system ever devised, one that knows roads are bad things and will steer your youngster away from them. At the same time, they realize that a short little kid with an ice-cream cone is like a gift from God."

If you want a fun book to just make you smile, this book is for you.

I was very much taken by the cover shot when I first saw this book on Amazon, the reviews too, seemed rather encouraging ... when the book arrived, I was expecting the rest of the photographs to be of similar or better quality ... am a little disappointed.

If this is an instructional book on how to raise or train Labradors, quality of photographs would not be so critical ... but its a pictorial book, and for some reason, quite a few of the photographs are missing that little extra ingredient which makes for really good photography ... perhaps if the photos had been more tightly edited, it might have made a difference ... At US$35 the book is not inexpensive, and there are better alternatives around ... just do a quick search, under photography and Labradors.

collection. The book is full of great photos paying equal homage to the "field" vs. "English" labs, and does not disciminate over color. His photography skills capture the personalities of the breed, and the depth of the relationships between dog and handler. The captions are perfect, and some will bring a tear to the eye of even the most stoic of us all.

The book is slanted toward field work, domestic life and hunting activities, rather than conformance or obedience work. My husband loved this as a gift, and he is nearly impossible to buy for. All in all, though, it is a beautiful tribute to this remarkable breed.

Ask any photography instructor, and he will say, "I don't want to see any puppy and kitty pictures!" How wrong they are. Dale does a great job of presenting the working Lab in everyday situations, from the field trial to the duck blind and the upland field, and he does it with a great sense of humor.

This book, however, is not a training manual. If you're wondering how to train Labs to do what Dale shows them doing, check out Mike Gould's "The Labrador Shooting Dog". Another great look at working Labs is Paul and Julie Knutsons' "The Pointing Labrador." Both books have great photographs of Labs in action, by the way, and the training techniques to back them up.

Such a great read, I almost forgot I was researching a mundane topic: how to care for a milk cow. Having raised beefers for years, I thought I had the maintenance part down - not. But even more interesting than the psyche, physiology, and common sense of nurturing and milking a cow, the book gave an entirely digestible account of how our nation's dairy products have regressed for years from creamy, delicious body builders into waxy white dead cells ciphoned off listless animals and spewed from factories in cartons with impressive expiration dates - AND WHY! Don't miss this one.

I always wondered how in the world did they train a dolphin to jump, flip and do all those fancy moves and now I have some idea. I mean afterall, the dolphin is in the water and you are on land? With dogs, at least, you can say commands with your voice and reward it by petting it. Well, this book answers all those questions you wondered about how they trained dolphins but were to afraid to ask or afraid to look stupid by asking. It is written in a very friendly, easy to read language and I was very pleasantly surprised with the book. I would highly recommended to to anybody and who knows, you might pick up a pointer or two on how to train other animals!

As someone who has loved dolphins her entire life (when I was little I wanted to be a dolphin trainer), this book intrigued me just because it was about dolphins and written by a dolphin trainer. I was pleasantly surprised on how much I was actually able to learn by reading it. Not only is it a great wealth of information about cetaceans (dolphins), it is also a very interesting read on training. It is full of anecdotes, making the book entertaining, and scientific data and fact, helping to lend a bit of seriousness. The unique training ideas that Karen Pryor discovered by trial and error can be, and are, used on every animal from a dolphin to a cat to a human. I highly recommend this book.

I first read this book almost 20 years ago, when I was a kid and in love with dolphins. I have re-read it two dozen times since then and enjoyed it just as much every single time. It will help the reader understand behavior in general...of your pets, your kids, your co-workers, your spouse...and how you can affect that behavior with timely and positive reinforcement of desirable responses. A delightful book! Hugely entertaining throughout.

The knowledge presented is accessible to the average horse person, and very extensive, covering just about every possible cause of equine lameness in the legs, hooves, and other parts of a horse's anatomy.

The book also covers methods of identifying different types of lameness, recognizing gait abnormalities, managing diseases, treating wounds, hoof care, shoeing, and available therapies, medications, and veterinary care. Veterinary therapies and surgical procedures are discussed, such as joint lavage, arthroscopic surgery, and the application of casts.

Trace the ancestry of your horse

This book provided the ancestry of the horses that started the American Quarterhorse breed. It was fun to take my horses' lineage and be able to trace it all the way back to the original King Ranch horses. I found out why my horse has such hard feet, why she likes to run so much, and found that she is the spitting image of one of her ancestors. I could hear the stories of her great grandsires and great granddams, the lives that they led, the places they lived, their temperaments, their quirks of behavior. I feel that I know my own horse better after seeing where she came from. I highly recommend this and the other volumnes of this series.

Artful and well-written, The Canine Commandments uncovers the true wisdom behind a dog's life. The lessons that W.R. Pursche delivers via our canine friends translate perfectly into our daily relationships with other humans, most notably friends and family. At the heart of it all is loyalty and unconditional love.

Although it will resonate especially strongly for pet lovers, Lessons to Live By: The Canine Commandments is a self-help book intended for readers of all backgrounds, regardless of pet ownership, that draws upon what humans can learn from their canine companions. Timeless wisdom, from the importance of living for the moment to loyalty to the treasure that is friendship and the power of everlasting faith and more - all these are virtues embodied within man's best friend, of which man (and woman) should take heed. "The next time you are with a group of people, count how often their 'conversation' is really nothing more than telling other people how they should behave. 'Don't do that!' 'Put on a sweater, it's cold.' 'Change the station.' Sometimes what passes for conversation is nothing more than a subtle - or not so subtle - series of comments trying to get each other to change - to do what they want, to be like them... Dogs just accept others for what they are, and love them as they are." 100% of the net proceeds of Lessons to Live By: The Canine Commandments will be used for the saving and care of dogs and other animals through the efforts of humane organizations. Highly recommended as an inspirational gift, especially for dog owners but sure to add a ray of cheer for anyone with fond memories of a beloved four-footed friend.

I just loved the Canine Commandments!

I just loved this book! It is really well-written book and the lessons are very inspiring. There is also a great story at the end where a dog 'tells' his story about being adopted and living with his people.

I can't wait to see if the author writes another book!

Now I get it....

While I really love dogs, Pursche's book is really about life and living.

Real simple, fast to read, not too many big words or complicated concepts to digest!

Take an hour or two to read and gain a new perspective on daily living.
