I have had the privilege of meeting Carole through a neighbor. Just in meeting her I feel blessed. Her book speaks honestly of her accident. Naturally, I wish that it never happened, but she is so positive and continually reaching for new goals. Her attitude throughout the book illustrates how she appreciated the people and animals around her. The relationships in her own family were exposed and then nurtured. Her blessings are many and suddenly, I could see how she not only turned her life into a survival story but a platform to help others. Anyone that reads this book will understand how Carole found the strength to go on and love deeper. This book truly is the way Carole is everyday. Read and enjoy how horses can be so much more than an animal to ride. I know that I will see horses differently now and think of how they kept Carole being a person who lives from "within" her heart and soul, instead of one who lives "without".

As a fan and student of Carole Fletcher's Trick Training techniques, I was familiar with the bio behind this book before reading it. So it was with a literary mindset that I opened the cover, expecting to view the entire book with a critical eye; curious, mostly, to learn just what did Larry Scanlan do to bring the ashes of Carole's past back to life.

My resolve to be largely unmoved lasted maybe two pages. I was totally captivated. Through Larry Scanlan's ability to weave pertinent and insightful personal details through the charred remains of Carole's past, Carole emerges as she truly is: human, rather than a string of incredible facts. People everywhere can relate some situation in their life to what Carole has endured and draw courage from her story. Her hospital ordeal was gut-wrenching; the stories about her horses have the same effect on your heart. There were plenty of details to whet the appetites of horse people, but there is message and metaphor for every one, everywhere; lessons for all of us on overcoming obstacles, achieving goals, healing relationships, feeling real compassion, looking for the true beauty in every one and everything around you, finding meaning in life.

Through 'Healed by Horses', Fletcher and Scanlan have made a tremendous contribution to society.

Healed by Horses is a wonderful book that gives hope and encouragement to anyone who reads it! It reaffirms the fact that life is a gift, and, if you allow it, struggle can make you better. As Carole states on page 230: "It's working with horses that heals, by developing discipline, courage, patience, and perseverance. You may come to horses -- as I did -- unable to walk, unable to cope, disfigured and in despair, but what I learned is that horses do not judge by looks or class or reputation. Still, you must earn their trust and cooperation, and out of that comes self-esteem."

Healed by Horses is a must-read; a fantastic book that leaves readers entertained, educated and... changed.

Page by page, this memoir delicately, and sometimes dramatically, shows the true story of Carole Fletcher. Its inspiring message touches readers of all interests, ages and spectrums.

The book, on the surface, is about a burn victim whose life is turned upside down after a near-death experience in a gasoline explosion.

Underneath, the storyline is even stronger and deeper, as Carole Fletcher delves into the meanings of inner and outer beauty, self-worth, "a never give up mentality," inspiration and other life lessons.

Carole shows us how horses, who never judge our outer appearances, dragged her out of a near suicidal state and, ultimately, launched her career as an internationally respected trick horse trainer and author.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Carole Fletcher at her Reddick, Florida, home. She is a true gem; a delightful, strong woman who sees each day as a gift. Her book -- and her story -- are a gift to us.

Healed by Horses gets TWO THUMBS UP!

A beautifully written book that is easy to read and understand. The stories are moving, and the directions for beginning healing yourself on your own horse, are clear and concise with wonderful diagrams and pictures to further explain how to go about it. I have tried some of the techniques with my elderly horse who recently lost his best horse buddy, and have seen definite results. It is a book worth reading.

I've read many books on hedgies in preparation for buying one, and this is the best. We got our little guy from Dawn who has never given us any bad information about raising a happy and healthy hedgehog. She spent a lot of time with us, so we'd have the right hedgie for our family and really knows her stuff. So many books have bad informtion in them. If you're thinking about adding one of these little characters to your family, this is the book to read before doing so.

Dawn's book was one that i happened upon while looking for information on having a hedgehog as a pet. As I did more research I found so many books available that have potentially deadly information in them.

I found several breederes in the USA that will not sell a hedgehog to a new person before they have read this book. It is an easy read, with good information. It also has very cute pictures. If you think you want a hedgehog, READ THIS BOOK FIRST!!

The best book available on the market.

Hedgehogs are still considered "fad" pets by many, and several of the books available on the market today reflect that by providing information that treats these charming, intelligent animals as disposable pets. Dawn's book systematically goes through most aspects of hedgehog care, speaking with expert knowledge and true affection for these animals. A novice hedgehog owner, or someone considering bringing one home for the first time, will get a lot of valuable information from this book.

I highly recommend.

A lovely book, with stylish illustrations. While it reflects a bias toward certain warm-blooded, furry pets, statistics show that that higher mammals are more likely to make bad decisions than reptiles or fish, and, moreover, are far more likely to regret those decisions.

One of the funniest books that I ever read.

In Henry and Mudge in Puddle Trouble you'll see how kids sometimes don't listen to their parents even when they want to. When Henry doesn't listen to his mother's advice about the Morning Glory will he able to fix the problems it causes? Find out why listening to your parents is important when you read this book. If you are the kind of kid who doesn't listen to your mom then this is the book for you. Check out other books in the Henry and Mudge series like Henry and Mudge and the Best Test.

I eagerly awaited the publication of Melanie's second book after devouring "The Horses of Proud Spirit" - it was worth the wait. Melanie continues her saga with stories of Proud Spirit rescues, and documents her emotional move from Florida to Arkansas. "Hoof Prints" has both comic and heart-wrenching moments, is similar in style and content to her first book, and will not disappoint! Her personable writing style pulls at your heart and will not let go; its as if you're listening to a good friend describe the details of her latest rescue. This is a book to savor over a good cup of tea, tissues nearby. The horses will become part of you - you'll never forget them or their stores. A remarkable second effort, "Hoof Prints" firmly establishes Melanie Sue Bowles as an important non-fiction writer of our time.

If you love all animals, this is a book you MUST READ! It will make you cry, laugh, and at times angry, but most importantly, it will make you stop and think about what happens when humans, money, and animals are triangulated...the animal most usually ends up on the losing side. "Hoof Prints", as well as, Ms. Bowles first book, "The Horses of Proud Spirit", are not only thought provoking, but an education for the mind and heart. And speaking of hearts, Melanie Sue Bowles, and her husband, Jim, must have some of the biggest hearts in this whole wide world! Ms. Bowles is so much more than a rescuer and author...she lives for all the magnificent animals in her care, and because she does, they live, too. I promise, the word, Biscuit, will never have the same meaning for you again! Her books are the kind that you read, and re-read, and re-read for the rest of your life. I suggest buying them both, with a big box of tissues...you'll be so glad you did! After reading "Hoof Prints", and "The Horses of Proud Spirit", I consider myself, HORSE BLESSED.

I very seldom read a book anymore except a magazine article once in a while but for some unexplained reason I felt compelled to order Melanie Sue Bowles "Hoof Prints...". I am so glad I did. I found that this author's words brought out about every feeling and emotion one can have by those who deal with our equine companions. She truly touched my heart with each chapter (even broke it a couple times). It is a book of tears and smiles and a few laughs if you have any sense of hunor. I had barely finished this book when I ordered her first novel "The Horses of Proud Spirit". I would recommend this book to anyone who loves animals, not just horses.

How Would It Feel? is a fantastical adventure in nature. The readers are transported on the breeze, fall with the rain, shake hands with lightening, swing with the stars, and play tag with the sun. It's such whimsical fun.

I really like the feel of this book. The text flows like poetry and creates a different feeling for page of adventure. The illustrations are bright and playful, further adding to the experience.

Review Date: 2006-02-10
Reading this book was a very enjoyable experience for me, and I'm an adult! I can only imagine what it must be like for a kid to read it, or have it read to them. But the book helps with that. It really made me remember what it was like to be a child, and it elicited memories of how much I enjoyed other wonderful books, which were read to me when I was a youngster (and which I later read to myself). And not just vague memories; it brought back sights, and sounds, and smells, and sensations I might otherwise have never again recollected. Mmmmm... I would have loved this book then, and I love it today.

One of the best things about this book is how it stimulates the imagination. The author, and the illustrator are obviously very imaginative, and through this book, they help readers to exercise their own mind`s eye. The questions posed throughout the poem are ones which would seem absurd, and meaningless to an unimaginative person. Yet if you suspend disbelief, and allow your imagination to take you wherever it might, you will enjoy yourself greatly; I guarantee it. Even the most unimaginative "mature grownup" will remember what it was like to daydream in their youth, and to be wowed by things which they did not yet understand; to imaging what things are like, instead of knowing.

This book is remarkable, and I highly recommend it for children of any age (including the grownups ;-).

I always am surprised when I receive something from a publisher, in this case Bear & Company as Bear Cub Books, and at first glance it may be "off topic" but it turns out to be a sparkling gem that fits perfectly.

In this case the book appeared to be a children's fantasy book. I was curious, however, because of the illustrations on the front cover. They appeared almost "magical" and, of course, I was hooked.

The book is a journey, an adventure. And the theme of the book - very magical and very natural. From the first page that introduces the reader to the first steps of the journey, there are exciting aspects of the artwork for the child and adult to explore together. From the boat flying on a breeze, to dancing on raindrops, or traveling on rainbows, each verse suggests an adventure, each illustration offers exploration for a young mind's eye, and each concept explores an aspect of nature that is only limited by the boundaries of the parent and child's imagination.

The verses question the child, challenging them to fill the story with their own ideas. While the book seems short, the possible conversations between parent and child can make this an entire afternoon's activity, encouraging conversation and quality time between parent and child. This would be a perfect book for a rainy afternoon spent in a comfy chair, where the parent and child share a seat, a book and many stories.

The book maintains a steady theme of exploration in a positive manner. The images are friendly, even when they are exploring something that might be considered scary. There is always a friendly face that could be associated with a parental figure, the child is always represented as having a good time and being kept safe and protected, yet the child is allowed to explore beyond the limits of his own living room. It is freedom yet it is secure.

The themes are from nature. It explores seasonal changes, goes from the depths of the ocean to the furthest reaches of the sky. It explores the natural world, yet it pictures everyday life such as buildings and neighborhoods, reminds the child of home, yet it also explores their home is part of an even larger place called the world.

Run out and get this book for your little ones. Run out and get this book for yourself! Treat yourself to some quality time with your child, or with yourself, as you explore the never ending limits of your own imagination. See if you don't agree with me this is a wonderful concept in children's reading material that will delight again and again. boudica

This darling puppy is sure to appeal to my first graders. The bright colors and easy reading will entice my beginning readers to dive right in to reading! Grocery shopping is an activity children are familiar with and can relate to. I imagine they will enjoy reading about a puppy getting into trouble in the store instead of themselves. I love the way the author shows the children how to forgive in each of her books.

The Howie books are a delightful series for young readers. Howie brings a charming message of God's love and brings humor and adventure as well.

My 10-year old daughter enjoyed the character of Howie and the repetition used in the book.
