This is the first time I have been inspired to post a review. Deborah's photographs are some the most beautiful black and white photos I have ever seen. My first thought when I started looking at her book was that I would love to have her take portraits of my dogs. Her work is inspiring and will break your heart. And, as a dog lover, I loved her subjects and the delightful way she choose to portray them. This -- and her book "Pup" -- is an absolute must for any artist, photographer or dog lover.

Deborah and I were neighbors when this book was released. I remember looking at the gallery proofs and falling in love with it then. The book is so well produced that it is like looking at her originals.

I return to this book often. The photos are extraordinary, and the commentary utterly charming. Deborah knows and understands dogs.

Happily, I had her photograph my golden. Her portrait, stunningly gorgeous, hangs on my wall.

Deborah Samuel has used her camera to capture the beauty and unique attitudes of various purebred dogs. Her black and white photography is sweetly insightful. These dogs aren't dressed up funny--these dogs are just themselves. Her photographs capture the soulful, humorous, sweet personalities of our four legged friends. Right from the first time I laid eyes on this book I was bedazzled with it.

See the grace of a Greyhound, the playful mentality of a Jack Russell, the sleek elegance of a Doberman, and more, as well as Deborah Samuel's own studio notes. I can't wait to get her next book, "Pup." Don't miss this one--if you love dogs, you'll be enchanted with this.

A must for any Siberian or other Northern Dog owner

I just purchased this book after meeting the
author and in real life the famous Col. Taz.
He attended one of our Siberian Husky Club
meetings.

I have an adopted Sibe and have also had
two Malamutes. This book is a primer for
anyone that owns one of these special
breeds, and also is a warning for those who
have not done their research.

Almost every story can be related to real
life and from internet sites that I visit. It
will bring tears of laughter to your eyes and
will bring a smile to your face for any of your
past furry friends and an appreciation of those
that you currently have the privelege to have
in your household.

A Must Have for Every Siberian Owner

I have read this book many, many times, it never gets old. It will make you laugh out loud, cry, and say to yourself "Oh My God, that is totally my dog!!!" For every saint who owns a Siberian Husky, it is a must read. Each of our own dogs' personalities, antics, and senses of humor come alive in every chapter. This is an extremely well written and clever insight into the world of Siberian Husky ownership or rescue. For anyone thinking about adopting or fostering a Siberian Husky, this book tells the truth about life with this wonderful breed of dog.

Awesome Dog Book!

This book is a must for any dog owner. It chronicles the antics of a Husky owner and rescuer. If you have a high maintenance breed dog you will die laughing and if you have a low maintenance dog you will count your blessings and laugh hysterically!

A must read for anyone thinking of buying a Siberian Husky! Scott has seen it all in his years of rescuing this demanding high-maintenance breed. Through the years, he's taken in dogs rejected by owners who had little idea what they were getting into when they selected that intractable house-eating energizer bunny of a pup who, it just turns out, is also adept at climbing or digging under fences. We get to meet Scott's sweet delinquents in this collection of short moving essays which have, for years, been entertaining readers on the internet.

Here is Taz, Colonel Taz, he of the piercing blue eyes and regal disposition. A gentle Tasmanian Devil whose early goal is to invite the feline residents to dinner - as the main course. Beautiful tragic Kismet, who escaped and was lost forever moments after being rescued. Sweet loving Missy, whose mental acuity was left severely impacted from childhood disease. Missy's reaction to everything in life can be summed up as "Oooh, this is fun!" - yet, she'll howl like a banshee if left alone. Actually, a banshee wouldn?t quite live up to the sheer abandon with which a Siberian Husky will let the world know that you are the reincarnation of Vincent Price visiting some horrible medieval torture on this poor helpless creature by leaving it alone for but a moment.

Each of Scott's witty, funny, occasionally heart-rending tale is a complete story in itself. Yet, the cumulative effect of the book is more than the sum of its parts. I would recommend this life-affirming book to all, even if you have already read the individual essays in the past.

buy this book .... really!

as someone who has has siberians around the house for the last twenty years, all i can say is it's all true.

over the past few years of reading these stories on sibernet, i've always smiled when i would see myself or my dogs in these stories. i have a few friends who have gotten sibes based on these stories, and a few who have read them and said 'what was i thinking.'

this book is a crash course in being owned by huskies. it's full of love and laughter and tears. and so is life with sibes.

anyone who shares their lives with dogs should get this book.

Purchased recently to help my work in an Emergency clinic. The book is an excellent collection of conditions commonly encountered in a busy ER clinic set up.Very comprehensive, informative.
Each condition is described very professionally from description of the condition-diagnosis-prognosis-treatment including the description for many procedures used in the treatment.Doses of medications is very informative.

Repetitions are to be avoided; example-the procedure for "gastric lavage" is repeatedly described in detail under all conditions that possibly require a gastric lavage.Instead of this the general procedure for gastric lavage could have been described at one place and reference to that page can be given on all conditions requiring a gastric lavage. This can save a lot of pages of print.

A few demonstrations of how to calculate a CRI would be very helpful.
Inclusion of color pictures illustrations can save a lot of space in describing the procedures.

Inclusion of common toxins and antidote is helpful.

I have worn out the first edition, which is just under 300 pages. This book is about twice the size but has more than 2X the info because the type is smaller. This is the book I often use daily to get me through poisonings, trauma and more. Each problem has the treatment completely listed, you do NOT have to page back and forth to find drugs, procedures, etc. Buy it, I'm glad I did!

We bought this for our daughter who is three and just gets lost in the book. As I have not read it from cover to cover, I cannot comment to well on the thoroughness of the content. However, any questions we have had, like what is the difference between a seal and sea lion, have been answered, which leads me to believe that the content is good. Also, it is organized by species groups, which I find really instructional in terms of seeing relations and connections between seemingly unrelated animals. The illustrations and photos are gorgeous and the book really focuses on the diversity within animal species, which is great for my daughter's comprehension of the diversity of life forms as well as geography. The books also indicates where each animal falls in the continuum of endangered species, bringing another useful and provocative layer of information to the book.

I purchased this book for my 2 1/2 year old for Christmas. She loves looking at the pictures and asks questions about the animals. She will go get the book, which is almost as big as she is, and give it to me saying "Lets look at the pictures mommy". It is a great way to introduce the diversity of animals from around the world to a child. The images are both photos as well as beautifully illustrated artwork. The text portion I hope in the future will also become of interest to her once she becomes old enough. My husband and I have already found ourselves reading and learning as our daughter looks at the pictures.

What a fantastic tome, all five pounds of it. Pages are packed with illustrated information in full color. The kids beg to look over the book, and ask for more information from the highlights. In addition, they're learning geography, as each page shows a world map with the habitat range.

Thirty years ago, a book of this caliber would have cost hundreds of dollars. Thank goodness that the world economy supports lower prices now.

We got this book when my daughter was between 2 and 2.5, and it quickly became one of her favorites. It is loaded with full color photos that kids love (although most pictures are color illustrations), and encourages them to learn their animals. She knows animals my 13 year old sister never even heard of. This isn't even a children's book. It is a real encyclopedia with real facts about the animals. I have a couple of complaints, though: 1) it is not as complete as I would like (I've noticed it's missing quite a few animals) and 2) it does not give all of the same info for all of the animals. Some are much more complete than others, and it doesn't much allow for comparisons. However, this seems to be the best animal encyclopedia out there, and we definitely enjoy it.

If I was a hunter, I'd fly falcons!

I've never hunted before - game or fowl. I grew up in the city, and have never held a shotgun in my 40 years. I had no understanding of hunting - it's potential for beauty and forging a connection with nature - until I read Dan O'Brien's Equinox.

Dan's connection with nature through falconry is moving, and at times tangible throughout Equinox. He reveals hunting as a truly noble sport - if approached with reverence for nature and respect for predator and prey.

Dan's prose is straightforward, without frills or fancy, well-suited to the rustic life he describes, stalking grouse on the South Dakota plains with bird and dog.

I think most people will enjoy Equinox, regardless of background, but I especially recommend it to people who have negative feelings about hunting but are open to thinking about it in a new way.

I liked this book. At times, there may have been too much emphasis on the dogs, or too much on just falcons (red-tailed hawk coverage would have been great, but the author caters to peregrine falcons, so it is obviously his choice). Regardless, the amount of detailed coverage is impressive and written very well. Fortunately, the author eases you into the detail and doesn't toss it in your lap like some books. Whenever a new falconry term is mentioned in the text, there is a small side-bar definition of that term.

Some have said that the author's attitude gets in the way. When I read the few pages from the website, I also got a little of that. However, when I read the rest of the book, I did not get that at all. Often, appearances can be deceiving.

Great Story

I was surprised at how good this book was. I expected it to be a primer for my interest in falconry but found it to be so much more. It is a fantastic account of the training of a raptor and the relationship between man and bird. Obviously passionate about his undertaking the author describes the training process in vivid detail making a compelling story to the end. With an equally interesting personal story that parallels his bird of prey adventure this book makes for a very enjoyable read.

Interesting, but too self-indulgent...

Review Date: 2002-10-24
Having begun working with birds of prey (in a rehabilitation center) in the last couple of years I have searched for books that gave more personal insights into the practice of falconry. Mr.O'Brien certainly knows his subject and does a fine job of describing the sport and the birds themselves. His accounts of hacking (early training) young peregrines in particular are excellent. I found his descriptions of what can go wrong, as well as right, in the caring and training of these birds quite illuminating and engrossing. His use of falconers-speak is well balanced with the story and the annotations quite helpful for those unfamiliar with the sport.
I unfortunately found the overall concept of a man in midlife attempting to convince the reader that he is on a quest for some sort of middle age epiphany a bit trying. His relationship with his wife - an anesthesiologist who spends the majority of her time in a sleep deprived state, taking hospital call, and generally supporting his rather indulgent and self-centered lifestyle- frustrated me and was distracting from an otherwise interesting story about the training of a gifted young peregrine falcon.
I give much credit to Mr. O'Brien for being a man in touch with nature and clearly environmentally sensitive and conservation oriented. But, as my wife said after finishing the book, he comes across as something of a jerk in his personal life. Given that Mr. O'Brien's skills in describing the beauty of the land he lives on and the animals he has the great privilege of interacting with are most enviable, it's a shame that this aspect diminishes an otherwise excellent story.

Jacqueline Susann is known mostly for her "sex" books--"Valley of the Dolls", "The Love Machine" and "Once Is Not Enough". However before she wrote those she released this hilarious book about her poodle Josephine. It tells how she got a pet poodle and how her and her husband Irving grew to love it. It's a short book but very well-written (unlike most of her other novels) and very funny no matter how many times you read it. Susann missed her calling--judging by this book she could have written some great comedies. I've read it at least seven times over the years and laugh at it every time. Purportedly this was Susann's favorite book out of all the ones she wrote. It's easy to see why! Highly recommended.

I think I read it about 5 times in my life. Love it. A funny story that made me want a poodle so badly my parents went nuts. They got a German Shepherd instead and I never forgave them!

Many years ago, I came across "Every Night Josephine" by adult novelist Jacqueline Susann. While I considered myself a "cat person" I couldn't help but get caught up in the lives of this adorable French poodle and her author-owner. The way the author laid out the story and related the experiences of this pampered pet as she hobnobbed with showbiz celebrities was rich in detail and description. I could actually picture the little dog chowing down on Hershey Kisses in a New York City penthouse or upstaging her mistress during a television appearance. THE END.

To two glamour gals from Hollywood, Josephine represents the sophisticated chic that is New York society. Sweet Dreams.

what can you say about this book? jackie escaped from her novels of sex, seconals, and scandal twice, and the results were in my opinion, her best efforts: YARGO and EVERY NIGHT JOSEPHINE! this book was funny, easy to read, and reread, and just plain entertainment. ms susann never aspired to be a shakespeare or hemingway, and her delightful books should be appreciated for what they are. personally, i think its sad that her life was cut short, i would love to have seen my collection of her books growing every year as my stephen king collection currently does.

Every Rescued Dog Has a Tale - you'll laugh, you'll cry, but you won't be able to put this wonderful little book down.

If you've done transports you will find yourself saying "Been there, Done that!!!"

Deborah has captured the essence of pet transport - thru bad weather (try carrying 9 dogs in 2 cars thru torrential rain on I-40 in TN) and good. This book will help you remember nearly every transport vividly (yes, I still remember carrying two labs, who we discovered didn't like water, thru 6 inches of water in a driving rain in a MacDonalds parking lot to their next ride). This book will bring those memories back vividly.

And if you aren't a transporter - follow the directions in the book and join the fun - and the sadness, for there will be times of sadness in a transport. A recent cocker transport I was involved with included a very sick 10 year old senior. But there was a silver lining. Tho she didn't make it, crossing over the bridge 3 days after the transport, she at least was in a loving home when she left us.

This little book will bring all of these memories flooding back. Enjoy - I did.

The book "Funny Bunnies" is a picture-filled delight of nature's cutest animal (okay, some may not agree that they are THE cutest, but I think that they are; and the pictures are delightful, too). The main body of the book offers pictures of pets for most breeds of rabbits, some background to the breed and a little humorous biographical information or story about the pictured pet. At the beginning of the books are ears of various breeds, at the end are the tails of rabbits: i.e., front and back of bunny. The book is well-written and entertaining, and as noted, the pictures are terrific. It is an oversized, short book (slightly less than 100 pages), but it's a fun book, one that you might find yourself paging back through time and again. It's definitely worth treating yourself to this book.

It was good because it did bring up both good and bad things about the breed. Danes are not for everyone. However, I wish it would have had more info on everyday living with a Dane and not so much on breeding. And yes, I did get a Dane.

I loved this book. I learned enough in the care section to save at least one trip to the vet (normal stuff that doesn't seem so - callouses for big dogs). This book was fun to read, in addition to being so informative. Great for better understanding my Great Dane.

This book answered all my questions about temperment, exercise and medical issues. I also really appreciated the balanced view - all the up and down side of owning a Great Dane from puppy to old age and death. Thanks to Jill for providing excellant information - I'm sure our new Dane will apprecitate it when he/she arrives!

BUY THIS BOOK! I had purchased and read over a dozen books in preparation for bringing my puppy home, and this by far is the best.

The section on choosing a breeder is wonderful, and has some very important information you need to know before you buy a Dane from someone.

Bottom line, get it, read it, keep it for reference.

From THE BOXER REVIEW: This is a worthwhile purchase for all but the most knowledgeable breeder because it covers when to call the Vet, and what to do until you can get the dog to the Vet, and how to handle illness and injuries that do not require a Vet office appointment. Even the most knowledgeable breeders could find this useful to reaffirm a judgement concerning a dog's well being. This Doral Publication is highly recommended.

This book has saved me a minimum of 6 trips to the vet. The most recent was last night, when a visiting dog was showing signs of what I feared might be bloat. It wasn't, and I was able to figure that out based on the information in this book.

Every dog owner, not matter how experienced, will benefit from having this book close at hand. I plan to send a copy home with every puppy I breed.
