The book is well written and consist of a wealth of knowledge about the breed. Unfortunately it is to theoretical and not as practical as I hoped it would be. Also the pics are dull and in black and white and doesn't give the book an attractive feel to it. Also some chapters in the book are useless information unless u plan to write a thesis about the first dogs in the line. Overall some useful info. in this book but will not consider it to be the ultimate book to describe Alaskan malamutes

We bought this book shortly after it first came out and from that point forward we have purchased copies for anyone who has gotten one of our puppies. We feel strongly that along with our mentoring new owners, this book provides a resource for them to understand their dog. Bobbie Brooks has done an outstanding service to our breed with this book!

I first saw this book at a resort we were staying at. I had to have it!! I have never seen a more amazing book. This book is something I believe everyone should own. It is a wonderful teaching tool for young children, an interesting study for adults, an artists dream to have each specimen right there in front of you, an interesting and colorful study of thousands of specimens of sea, land and sky. To think that these were drawings that occured way before the camera was even thought of. Once you see this, you won't believe you lived without it. Don't skimp on this one; buy the Jumbo book and enjoy. Don't forget to order a new coffee table to hold it! ( : You won't be disappointed...ever!! ( :

This is a beautiful book, but I've had to factor in the cost of a dictionary stand or console table to display it. It's giant! and it looked silly on my average-sized coffee table.

This book is an outstanding bargain. It is beautiful and breathtaking. I hadn't read the dimensions of the book before ordering and was really surprised when this 16 pound book arrived in its own cardboard case. The pictures are so gorgeous and some poster sized prints are included -- unfortunately, the images selected for the posters are not the most attractive of Seba's work. Before ordering, I had planned to cut out some of the prints for framing, but I can't bring myself to do that now --this book is just so amazing.

You have to see this book in person to really appreciate how beautiful it really is. Every single page is filled with excellent drawings of hundreds of animals, plants, seashells, etc. It is absolutly outstanding. Every book lover, or nature lover should add this book to their collection. The price seems expensive but when you see the book it will be the best 140 dollars you have spent in a long time.

A friend gave me this book a week ago today. My wonderful cat (my companion of nearly 14 years), Trouble, died last week of kidney failure and my friend thought I could use a little comfort. I haven't read the entire book yet, but the last section on how animals say good-bye to us was truly touching to me and helped me to see that I'm not crazy for feeling so blue. Reading sections of this book allowed me to see that Trouble's desire to be held that last night he was with me was his way of saying good-bye and trying to let me know that he knew it was time and that he (and I) would be ok.

In these uncertain and harrowing times, those of us who share life with cats have the advantage of being able to reach out and touch softness, comfort, unconditional love and loyalty whenever we stroke our cats. ANGEL CATS: DIVINE MESSENGERS OF COMFORT by Allen Anderson is a prosaic comforter and provides much-needed balm for the soul by illuminating stories of cats' singular love for their chosen humans, each other, and other living beings. I heartily recommend this book for all cat lovers, most especially those who wish to understand their relationships to their cats on a spiritual level, and for all who look forward to meeting beloved feline family members "at the Rainbow Bridge" and beyond.

June Price does an excellent job of bringing you right there through it all.... if you really want to know what these mushers do, go through, and provide for their dogs, how much a part of the team they are, then read this book. It's a very well done account of the true happenings surrounding this great race. June has spent many years with these very people, researching, learning, and beautifully putting to paper, the extraordinary Iditarod, it's participants, and the dogs... Everyone who loves to gather more information about the inside of the race should put this on their MUST READ list. She takes you there, keeps you there, and gets you to the finish line... without even getting cold! :-) Thanks for a wonderful book, June.

I love Ellen Feld's Morgan Horse books. I love them because they don't ask the reader to believe that teenaged girls can solve crimes, stop the destruction of rural America, or take a half-starved rescue horse on Monday and win the KY Derby on him the following weekend. OK; I'm exaggerating. It usually takes them at least 6 months before they win the Derby.
Ms. Feld's books are realistic in their portrayal of the human and equine characters, and accurate in their descriptions of tack, veterinary care, etc.
As a once-upon-a-time horse-crazy teenager grown into a horse-crazy middle aged person, and both a bookseller and tack store owner in years past, I appreciate the fact that Ms. Feld's books aren't filled with inaccuracy and improbable fantasy. It has always seemed to me that many YA stories that are, presuppose that the readers are not very knowledgeable about horses.
Five stars and a bag of carrots to Ellen Feld's books.

Written and illustrated by Emily Eve Weinstein, Cat Book is both a unique original art collection and a memoir/celebration of beloved feline friends. Weinstein's vividly crafted, full color monographs deftly capture the fur, love, and kinship of a variety of different four-legged hunters, and her words tell the unique life story of each animal, whom she got to know. Cat Book is enthusiastically recommended reading for cat lovers!

Ms. Weinstein is a woman blessed with many gifts. Several of these gifts are skillfully applied in Cat Book. Her monoprints in oils capture the essence of each feline featured, and the accompanying prose clearly reveals this author's passion.

The artwork is pleasing to the eye, and each story pairing cat and human is either humorous, heart warming, or touching. Ms. Weinstein's insights into taming feral felines, cat behavior, and maintaining optimum health are priceless.

If you count a cat lover among your family or friends, or if you are a cat lover yourself, Cat Book would be an ideal gift for any reason or season.

I highly recommend it.

I this small compact volume called simply Cat Book, artist Emily Eve Weinstein has created an enchanting and beautiful compilation of paintings and real life stories of our feline friends. With pictures and heartfelt sentences, she introduces us to over fifty kitties.

Weinstein's creations are awash with colour and life and often make you smile. Some of her pieces look almost avant garde and a few resemble puzzles but the cat hidden away in the bold brush strokes makes his or her presence known eventually. The accompanying narratives and anecdotes only make this slim volume that much more enjoyable.

Ms. Weinstein is a firm supporter of animal shelters, rescue agencies and welfare groups and some of these agencies are using her book as a fund raiser. The last few pages also discuss Neuter/Spaying programs, alternative pet care and other valuable information for pet lovers. Cat Book is a must read, whether you're a cat lover or not...

There are two things wrong with this fine book: it's hardcover and thus, may come across as merely a 'coffee table book' with less text value. Not true! Secondly, the title perhaps suggests a book that is all 'sing song' and full of mushy cat ramblings. Completely false! 'Cats Have No Masters...Just Friends' should be titled something like, 'How to Have an AWESOME Relationship with your Cat.' There is no possible way that one could read this book and not substantially (if not radically) improve life with a cat. So much is covered in this book that is truly original - from Ms. Anderson's section on the (often overlooked) differences between cats and dogs, to dispelling cat myths, to the very detailed, practical, fun chapters on exactly how to treat your cat to bring out the best in feline-human friendship, this well-written book is an absolute MUST HAVE for any person with a cat. First time cat owners should read this book before getting a cat. Long time cat owners will smile and learn from the wisdom and humor on these pages. By the way, there are wonderful color photographs on each page, perfectly illustrating the lively text. This book is a gem. Treat yourself, treat a friend, don't miss this one!!

Having taken a course from Joan Ranquet a few years ago, I bought this book as soon as it came out. I now have a 2nd copy so I can loan one out without letting go of my own, which I review frequently. The book is a refresher course for me and something new sinks in deeper each time I read it. The first chapter helped me with a problem I was having with my horse at the time I first read it. A later chapter explained a puzzling change in one of my livestock guardian dogs' behavior. Yet another helped me open up and see what my llamas were trying to "tell" me. Joan understands animal psychology and knows how to help the rest of us learn it. She does so with wit and compassion. Anyone who has any kind of animal friend needs to read this book.

This is a pleasant book outlining the author's development as an animal communicator. The first half of the book details the author's journey and is filled with summaries of some of her cases. The second half purports to be a training section and contains techniques designed to facilitate animal communication.

The author has an agreeable style and is definitely an animal lover. Her communication skills seem to be as attributable to her practical knowledge of animals, ie., experience training, feeding, etc, as to her intuition or psychic ability. The anecdotes were not terribly detailed and I was left wondering about some of the stories. Just what did happen to Pony Boy, her orphaned and angry colt?

I was more disappointed in the second half which was quite general. While a meditative state is generally conducive to intuitive experience more detail would have been appreciated. Her observations about animals mirroring the physical and mental state of their guardians was fascinating, but again, her story development and description were a bit spare.

All in all, this is fine as a first effort. If you enjoy reading books about people who love animals and work at understanding and appreciating them, this book will provide you with an enjoyable read. If you are serious about developing your animal communication skills try books by Marta Williams and Amelia Kinkade.

I have read and re-read and re-read this book. My husband has bought me a number of "working dog" books but this is the only one that has really "clicked" for me. She manages to tell each story in such an endearing way. You really tangibly feel the love of the dogs and their owners for each other. You also come away awed at what these dogs are capable of.

There are some stories that are more interesting than others but overall it was a great book. I too would give it more than 5 stars if I could -- and I'm usually pretty stingy with stars in my reviews!

of the serious and the joyful. The authors do a commendable job of balancing the sometimes important and grave aspects of dogs' work with the happy silly things dogs do. It is patently impossible to not love dogs *even more* after reading about their courage and unique skills. My favorite part of the book is the beginning, which shows stunning color photographs of these beautiful animals. One cannot miss the dignity and purpose in all of the dogs' expressions. Truly marvelous!

In contrast with the rather austere _The Difficulty of Being a Dog_, this is the book I would get for the dog lover on your gift list. The authors profile dogs around the world who do vital, entertaining, helpful, and sometimes life-saving work.

Although there are some familiar types in this bunch -- a retired racing greyhound, a top sheep-herding champion, a prize-winning show dog, a veteran Iditarod race sled dog, a canine actor (malamute-timberwolf mix), a police dog, and a German shepherd who hunts for injured people in disaster areas -- you will encounter some canines who accomplish tasks you could not have imagined.

Snooper is a female beagle who can out-perform any humans and their machinery in detecting termites in people's Florida dream homes. A Newfoundland named Mas rescues boats and people at sea of the east coast of Italy, even leaping out of a helicopter to get to them. Yanka and King are a pair of German shepherds who perform the dangerous work of sniffing out land mines in Bosnia. A black Lab named Star is an arson investigator in England who can detect 10 different hydrocarbon accelerants in the wreckage of a fire.

A yellow lab named Endal performs about 90 different tasks for his paraplegic Gulf War veteran friend, from opening doors and cupboards and turning on lights to taking a wallet and a note up to the cash register to "make a purchase" at non disabled-accessible businesses. A golden retriever can forecast his owner's epileptic seizures. Tammy, a Border collie, catches smugglers of endangered abalone in South Africa and has her own bodyguard -- a German shepherd who's a veteran police attack dog -- because criminals have made death threats against her.

The book is simply written, as if for high schoolers or middle schoolers. Also, the schematic structure of the chapters -- start in the middle of a dramatic moment, leave the action hanging to sketch in the background, return to the climax -- is a little obvious. But color portraits of every pooch and many more black-and-white shots, and the charm and wonder of the tales, make up for these shortcomings.

"Dogs with Jobs" profiles 21 working dogs: guide dogs for the blind, snake-catchers, termite-finders, lost pet-locators, plus an actor and a retired greyhound. Guaranteed to bring a smile to any dog-lover's face. Brief stories on each dog with lots of photos make this a great book, a light read, and an informative look at dogs who work for a living.

A Dog Walker/Trainer with a lifetime love for photography, this is my favorite kind of book. For sure. I've picked up many, but Sharon Montrose is my favorite. Every photo is so beautiful and I just LOVE how she captures the personality of her furry subjects. That's the true talent in my eyes. Of all of versions of this kind of work I have perused, this is my favorite one. Lightweights (Sharon Montrose) is a close second.

I also am aslo a fan of "If only you knew how much I smell you." (Photos - Valerie Shaff/Text - Roy Blount Jr.)

Quirky and creative pictorial portrayel of man's best friend. Makes the reader feel warm and fuzzy. A great gift book. Arlene Millman, author of BOOMERANG - A MIRACLE TRILOGY (The tale of a remarkable Boston Terrier).

After giving a few copies of Dogtionary as Christmas gifts, I am ordering a few more because the book was such a big hit with my friends. These dog portraits are beautiful and yet so simple. Any dog owner who has struggled to get a good picture of their pet can take inspiration from this book. Sharon Montrose clearly knows and loves her subjects well.

As an amateur photographer and animal lover, I'm on the lookout for dog portraits that are something special - this book has them! The photos are divine and the "meanings" of each subject's name are terrific. You get a real feeling for each dog's personality, something which is missing from so many so-called "great" animal portraits. If you love dogs and want to have a great coffee table book, or give it as a gift, this is the one!

This is the sweetest book I've ever bought. When I picked up this book in the bookstore I sat on the floor in the middle of the aisle and just started glowing as I went through the whole book page by page- It truly captures our sweet canine companions at their best. The photos are amazing and the sayings fit perfectly. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a love for dogs. It will brighten your day and make you laugh out loud. It captures our animals true spirits.
