I love this book!
It is a favorite for me.
first because I love cavia porcellus. My children learned those words from the book.
second the art work is beautiful, inspiring, and acurate to the experiences of having guinea pigs. I did my own artful representations of my guinea pigs after getting this book.
third each time i look at this book my heart warms over thinking of my dear guinea pigs. one lived 10 years, what a great gal she was.
fourth the content is accurate, and helpful.
I would suggest leaving a copy near your guinea pig home, cage, whatever you call your cavy space, for reference that is visually engaging, basic in content, and motivating, for self and especially children, in caring for your bouncy cavy companion.

I'm not sure if you don't have a guinea pig or your child doesn't have one at school but my son was very excited because it talks about types of guinea pigs and we enjoy it as we can compare it to ours behavior. The author clearly likes and has owned many and it gives advice about care without it just being a manual.

Our daughter begins every day saying "I'm not going to chase the cat today!" Jessica Harper's books --- and every single one of her CDs -- just couldn't be more popular around our house. This story is delightful, the rhymes clever, the whole cast ebullient and full of spirit. Jessica H. has created a universe where tolerance, good will and great fun reign-- what more could you ask? Linsday Harper Dupont's illustrations are lively, marvelously quirky, gorgeously colored. Couldn't recommend this book more highly.

I'm Not Going To Chase The Cat Today is a fabulous choice for those who pride themselves in discovering new & different choices for kids! Not only is the chasing theme adorable, but the illustrations of the animals in their "people" garb are hilarious and imaginative and just great, silly fun! I also wholeheartedly suggest that you check out Ms. Harper's CDs for children---she is a terrific songwriter with a GLORIOUS voice. Her lyrics range from funny to funky to sweet & cosy. Her style is classy, smart, stylish and diverse--truly different than any other artist out there. I promise you'll find yourself slipping her CDs into your player--even when the kids are outside chasing each other!

Once more, Jessica Harper hits a home run with my two young boys. As devoted fans of her music and previous book, I Forgot My Shoes, my sons giggled with delight while reading her latest work aloud together. The words are lyrical, the illustrations vibrant and the joyful spontaneity of the content is infectious. Our entire family wholeheartedly recommends I'm Not Going to Chase the Cat Today, and urges newcomers to Ms. Harper's work to jump right in and enjoy!

After reading and thoroughly enjoying the high-spirited book, I'm Not Going to Chase the Cat Today,I began using it as part of my book list to teach English as a second language to 4 to 7 year-old children with whom I work. The book, along with its delightful and humorous illustrations, is a wonderful tool for introducing children to the joys and engery of the American language. The book has many common expressions in it, which are repeated so they can be learned not to mention reinforced by the colorful pages filled with animal and human antics. Word and phrase repetition helps children become comfortable with language - strong illustrations give language life and clarity. My young pupils clearly enjoy the book each time I use it, and ask for it over and over. It provides a story whose actions and attitudes they can understand, with a meaningful and gratifying ending. I'm sure other teachers and parents will find the strengths and delights of this book to their liking, and certainly in line with their children's tastes and emotions.

I bought this book along with Handbook of Nature Study to help me start guiding nature studies with my son. I was not disappointed with either book, but I am especially happy with this one. It goes over all the basics of keeping a nature journal clearly and distinctly. There are a lot of examples of the author's own journal pages to help you get an idea of what is possible. There are sections for nature journaling in each season, as well as a chapter dedicated to drawing tips. This section is in addition to all of the drawing examples throughout the book. The section on teaching others about nature study could be a bit thicker, but it does give you the basic theories and suggestions you need to start. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to start nature journaling, it has certainly gotten me to start.

I had to buy this book, Keeping a Nature Journal, for an Ornithology course. Clare Leslie does an amazing job of sketching and just the book is awesome! She writes clearly and concisely and it is sooo easy to understand. It also is written so just your average Joe can feel like he can sketch beautiful pictures and such. Well, when I'm reading and skimming the pictures, I feel like I can be an artist too. Wonderful book.

This book has been very helpful in teaching me how to journal. My preconceived notions on journaling have been changed. The tips and techiniques given in this book have improved my journaling and helped me to teach my children that is is not an art project, but an activity to record what you have seen, heard and experienced. Not written from a Christian world view.

This book is so not what I thought it was going to be. I thought it was a journal to write in with some tips and things to get you started. But it is an entire, huge book telling you how to keep a scientific nature journal. I'd send it back except I don't want to have to pay shipping costs. HOWEVER, if you are looking for a very detailed book on how to keep a scientific nature journal, then this would be great for you. It is a lovely book to look at, and I might find some nice suggestions, but it wasn't at all what I had in mind.

This is THE book on miniature horses. My library would not be complete without it. If you can buy only one book, get this one. I've just acquired 2 minis and one more is on the way as soon as he is weaned. I've had full sized horses before, but this breed is somewhat different, with unique problems and advantages. Ms. Naviaux covers every related subject very well. History of the breed, coat colors, dwarfism, correct physical characteristics, miniature horse association registration, veterinary concerns, showing, etc. I've since bought additional books specific to coat color and veterinary care but I didn't really need them. I am thrilled to have found this book and it is a treasure.

This is the best book I've found pertaining to Miniature horses. It's well written and has lots of good advice. The second half has a lot of info on the genetics of color. While I thought I wouldn't find this very interesting, it's turned out that I spend lots of time reading this section and looking at the facinating pictures. I highly recommend this book for anyone seriously interested in minis.

One of the best of a great series
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-09
The Mr. Putter and Tabby series is a delightful and whimsical set of tales about an older man and his pet cat. These are simple tales, no complex Russian novel-like characters with conflicted psyches (although his neighbor Mrs. Teaberry is a little strange). Arthur Howard's illustrations are a perfect match for the story - just the right mix of whimsy, expression and humor. The last illustration of Zeke looking out the window at the incoming pears still makes me laugh.

Pick the Pears is one of best in the series (along with "Walk the Dog" and "Feed the Fish"). Our kids range from five to eight and each loves the book which has put the book on heavy rotation in the bedtime story schedule.

Funniest Book, so far, in the Series!

I agree with all the reviews. The Mr. Putter books are all wonderful beginning-readers, but this one is especially enjoyable. My Kindergardener read it to me over the last few days, and he was laughing out loud! He really enjoyed reading this book. He thought that Mr. Putter shooting apples through the air with a sling shot was increadibly funny (as were his pink poodle underwear!) He loves the characters, Mr. Putter and Tabby. I'd recommend any book in this series for children learning to read, but I highly recommend this one because it is so much fun!

I use the Mr. Putter & Tabby books for my ESL students. Mr. Putter & Tabby Pick the Pears is their favorite. The language is perfect for either children to build vocabulary or for older language learners for translation and acquisition. The stories are cute and charming. The illustrations are delightful. They look deceptively simple, but really are extremely well done with watercolor. The artist truly brings the characters' personalities to life.

What is particularly nice is the gentle humor used and the continuing themes. Mr. Putter is constantly referred to as "old" or not receptive to silly jokes (i.e. the poodle boxers) during the books but there are flashes of his playfulness throughout the series. while he is set in his ways with his garden, his tea and his love of opera, he still loves toys, trains, car rides and planes. Mr. Putter & Tabby are perfect companions who also have a very close relationship with Mrs. Teaberry, the next-door neighbor and her good dog Zeke. Tabby and Zeke have no dialog but their personalities shines through as well.

This series of books cherishes the differences between people and respect for the elderly. It has been my honor to present seven of these books to my students. They love them. Mr. Putter & Tabby Pick the Pears is the best of the series although they are all gems.

Awesome book!

Mr. Putter and Tabby are just a delightful reading experience. Pick the pears invokes the fun and creativity sometimes forgotten in today's much more fast paced world. We have this entire series and read from it at least weekly, but Pick the Pears is easily in the top three.

Some books have magic in them. You know the ones. They stay with you long after you've closed the cover. The rhythm of Ryland's words along with Howard's whimsical illustrations will have you "zinging pears" right along with Mr. Putter.

The Mr. Putter series is just about as good as children's writing gets. You can't go wrong with any one of them. But this one is our favorite.

Be careful what you wish for

Review Date: 2008-01-07
Have your children or students ever told you what they want for Christmas and after hearing it you internally cringe at the thought of them actually receiving it? Well, in `My Penguin Osbert' one little boy's Christmas wish becomes reality and its funny to see who ends up cringing...

Elizabeth Cody Kimmel tells the story of Joe, a classic case of Christmas-gifts-ignored-syndrome, who decides that he is going to help Santa get his gift absolutely correct this Christmas season. You see, Joe wants a penguin, a REAL penguin; he has to be exactly 10 inches tall, with a black and white coat, a yellow beak, a beating heart, and a name tag that reads "Osbert". And when Christmas rolls around he actually gets one.

H. B. Lewis' colorful illustrations will have you and your kids roaring with laughter as Joe's elated face gets more worried and worried by the pages. Very soon Joe begins to realize that taking care of a real penguin is quite a mission, especially if you would rather open the rests of you presents on Christmas morning than play in the very cold snow outside, or would prefer eating chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and not creamed herring, or think that ice cream makes a great dessert but is not a good substitute for Play-Dough. In the end, Joe and Osbert's friendship will continue but in separate houses, after Joe takes Osbert to the penguin section of the city Zoo and Osbert falls in love with the idea of living there. The only question remains... has Joe learned his lesson about being careful what you wish for?

Maybe not, but who does...

Despite the fact that this book has a young child writting lettrs to Santa, it is now February and we are still reading it! My son has hundreds of books and this is his favorite of all of them!

We read and discuss the lessons that are learned. My little one (he is 2) now knows that he has to take care of the people and animals he loves and not always do what HE wants.

We can not wait for more books by this wonderful author!

This picture book has a lot going for it: the story is about a penguin, if your child likes penguins then Osbert's story is a place for them to start reading. The story line is simple enough to glue a [...] to the page, yet magical enough to keep an [...] interested.

Osbert is a classic penguin, full of mischief and naive energy. He is a lovable character.

Elizabeth Cody Kimmel writes with a consistent style. It is a great little book that's sure to please parents and pre-reader age children.

The illustrations and art direction by H.B. Lewis are very nice indeed, in some instances truly wonderful. This is a book that will stay in your child's library for a long, long time.

Steven Kellogg is an excellent artist and storyteller. This is my favorite of his works. I often wished, when I was young, that my uncle in Scotland would send me a huge tadpole, but my uncle only lived 10 miles away in the desert. Not much chance of that!

This book has a great story and is fun! Children will love the vivid pictures as well as the exciting turn of events! I give it two thumbs up! There are two editions out there, the original, and the second edition which has several different illustrations and a few story differences. I like both, but for different reasons and whichever you get, you'll love it!

Sure, the plot is silly. What do you expect when the premise is that a tadpole caught in Loch Ness turns out to be more than Uncle McAllister bargained for? The Mysterious Tadpole is a rollicking romp, rich in absurdity (Only after Alphonse grows four legs and reaches the size of a Volkswagen does the teacher conclude that he's not an ordinary tadpole.), and chock full of Steven Kellog's usual hilarious illustrations. Grab the nearest child, curl up in a big chair, and enjoy The Mysterious Tadpole.

I loved this book as a child and have loved reading it to my son. He received the 25th Anniversary edition for Christmas and while it's very, very good, it has been rewritten and simply lacks the charm of the original (which I would rate an enthusiastic 5 stars). The story is still wonderful and if this is the only copy you have access to, you won't be disappointed. The original, though, is the best and that's why I have to give this edition 4-stars.

As a rider and trainer in the French Classical Method, along with publishing a magazine devoted to the French Arts -- [thecavalieronline*com] -- I enthusiastically endorse this book. I have used her methods with my own horses, both young and old to amazing success. My young horse has matured to a dazzling and delighful mount, having originally come to me with a "much too big for his britches" attitude. My older horse, a rescue and very shut down from his past experiences, is now a warm and vibrant horse thanks to listening to him through liberty techniques. Thank you Carol for your brilliant book.

I haven't even finished this book yet but I've been so impressed wtih it that I was compelled to write a review. Carolyn writes in a simple but deeply profound way that easily manages to transport you into the desert with her. In that sense, her writing style reminds me of Paulo Coelho. It is easy to feel what she is feeling, see what she is seeing amd enjoy every minute of her delicious experiences.

Her understanding of herd dynamics goes beyond anything I've learnt so far and I've studied natural horsemanship and animal communication for some years. Her clear distinctions between horses that are 'leaders' or 'dominant' are just brilliant. Whether you're already knowledgeable or not in this type of horsemanship/animal communicaiton, this is a highly refreshing, deeply moving and very beautiful book that will leave a lasting imprint on your soul. I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone that loves nature, animals and horses and will be ordering some copies for Christmas presents this year. Bravo Carolyn!

In my view, you truly owe it to yourself and your horses to at least give this book a good read and really consider the Carolyn Resnick Method of training. I truly feel you will be glad you did and will learn things that will give you a better bonding and understanding of your horse(s).

This is one of the best books of portraits that it has been my pleasure to view.

Before going further, let me observe that the book contains much female nudity that would earn an "R" rating if this were a motion picture.

Glenn O'Brien in the book's introduction captures the essence of the book well, "The beauty standard is being raised once again."

Whether the subjects are beautiful (and many are) or not, the result is the same -- a deep look into the personality and character of the model done in large, vivid detail in wonderfully contrasting duotone. One of the best tests for this book is to compare the celebrity images you see here with others you have seen of these same people. These images are more warm, more revealing, and more fun to see. Mr. Demarchelier has a light touch that gets out the happiest version of a person. You'll find yourself laughing and smiling your way through this collection, for sure.

The portraits displayed here are uniformly of very high quality, and provide nice contrasts of subjects (nose rings, boulders, children, and elephants among the beautiful people).

I have had dogs all my life, and though I thought I knew dogs pretty well and how to train them, I learned a lot from this book. I recognized that some of my methods were out of date. I tried these new and improved methods on a new dog I just got who is 1.5 years old. It has been amazing how quickly our bond grew from these both sensible and respectful methods of teaching. I learned not to be quite so forceful with my new friend. I learned that being Alpha in the pack did not mean having to intimidate my dogs. I highly recommend it for those who are not getting the behaviors they want and need from their dog companions, and also, for those who are considering getting or just have added a new dog of any age to the family. Knowledge like this can really save many if not most of these beautiful and loving animals from being dumped at our shelters or elsewhere.

A good beginner's dog-training guide.

This book goes over the basics of puppy and dog training using positive methods. It's a great introduction to positive training methods and describes how to teach your dog a number of important behaviors. It has definitely helped me train my new puppy. My only complaint is that there are a few training descriptions that don't really tell you how to finish the exercise with your dog. For example, the book goes over the difference between "wait" and "stay" and describes how to do both, but focuses on "stay." It didn't really tell how you tell your dog he can stop the "wait." I'm going to be looking for more information to help me continue training my puppy, but I still would definitely recommend it for anyone new to dog ownership.
