I was especially interested to learn this story took place in the state where I live. It grabbed my interest and I couldn't put it down. The writing was so well done, I felt I was living in the story. I wanted my friends to read it, so I bought several as a gifts and one to loan out (I didn't want to take a chance of loosing my own copy). Thank you for such a wonderful insight into Oklahoma's past.

I couldn't put it down! But, being as I only read it at the dinner table, I probably gained a few pounds just to read it! The recipes are good, and the secret youth face cream is something my whole family will try!
I cried, I laughed, I remembered the way it was--

This book brought tears and smiles to my face at the same time. It brought back memories of the stories my Grandma and Mom told me. You feeling like you are living it along with family members.
When you read this you want to settle down all comfy and cozy, maybe with the fire going and let it take you back in time.
The receipe's included are wonderful and "down home cooking".
Famished Heart is a wonderful, heart warming story of real people.

This is a wonderful book and I recommend it for anyone who has an older pet or a terminally ill pet or has just lost a pet. I read it while preparing for the loss of my cat, and best friend, a 20 year old gray tabby boy. A year after I read it, he was diagnosed with lymphoma and this book helped me so much during that time. I now buy it for friends who are going through the same. It's so nice to be able to help a friend with a book like this.
Great book...

We found out about this book through a link on when we knew the death of our beloved Muffin was soon. It really and truly helped us to prepare ahead of time for what we wanted for him--so we wouldn't be making decisions after the fact. It also reaffirms that fact that the grief one feels for the loss of a much-loved pet is real and not something "silly". While it's not fun to think about, those who have a pet (re. of breed or type) they love dearly may want to have this. There's also a chapter about post-death grief and how to help young children deal with the death as well. Recommended highly!

At 54 cents for each CR, these are worth it! They fit in a pocket or purse & don't get trashed since they are made on cardstock. You get more space to write than you do on the ones that come in each study. A worthy investment to keep yourself on track.

Finally a fitness book that supplies ALL the tools you need to succeed in getting fit. Exercises with pictorial descriptions makes it easy for the novice weight trainer to get started with the program. I enjoyed the inspirational real stories of people finally "doing it" whether it be in diet/nutrition, emotional recovery, or strength training. I found the charts to be crucial in my own success, especially the action/result goals and resistance training program. This is a must have fitness book!

I have read many fitness books and this one is the most comprehensive out there. The tone is warm and helpful, the suggestions are realistic and the results are amazing. I especially like the workbook format and the focus on the psychological and emotional aspects of fitness as well as the physical.
I would recommend The First Steps to Fitness to anyone trying to get or stay in shape, especially women who have poor body image and/or feel like whatever they've been doing to get into shape hasn't been working. The answers are in this book.

I am related to the author, so this was a very personal book. I can still remember the only time that I have ever met Caroline like it was yesterday because she was somebody that really stood out from most people. This is a very inspirational read, and it really teaches you to make the most of your life, because you can never be sure how much time you have left in your life, there are no guarantees. It is a very useful book for someone who has lost a love one, to help them cope with their loss. And I would recommend it to anyone even if they haven't lost a loved one, because it is truly an amazing book, that will give you inspiration, and hope when you need it most.
Betsy, if you're reading this it's Zac....

I hardly know what to say- I just finished reading this book. I lost my son just 2 weeks ago due to a birth injury. Davis's experience very closely matches my own. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who has lost a baby or who wants to understand what it's like.
I hope that someday hospitals will provide this book to grieving families. As Davis says, the books given by the hospital are about how we "should" be grieving. This book is wonderful because it shares what Davis went through- no shoulds.
I wish I could write a more precise review. As one who has been there, this is exactly the sort of book I recommend.

This is one of the most powerful books I've ever read. As a mother, one of my greatest fears is loosing my child and I thank God every day for his safety.
This book brought a face to the tragedy and sorrow of the loss of a child. I am grateful for that insight. I am also grateful for the advice given to friends of those who have lost children. One of the hardest things to do is to find the right words to tell a friend that you are sorry and grieving with them. This book helped me with to find ways to do that.
Thank you Kellie for sharing such personal grief with us. You are a very special person. Your book is fantastic!

(...) I was completely unprepared for the wrenching and profound experience of reading of this woman and her husband's travails. My never having been a parent in no way lessened the sense of tragedy and clutching grief that gripped me as I read this book. The fact that Kellie was able to share with others how she approached each stage of her attempts to deal with her loss and to return to some semblance of a normal life, as well as to suggest how the trauma might be alleviated some by using her journal prompts, was a brilliant way for Kellie to share this experience and help give closure not only to herself, but to others who may have similar experiences. Her book fills a void the awareness of which is known only by those who have been through the horrible loss of a child by whatever means and it would surely be a beacon for coping for any who have lost a loved one through senseless and abrupt death.

I was very happy with this book from the start. Though there are some parts that are difficult, in general the book is informative and, at times, funny. There is just enough so you understand the points Dr. Burlay is trying to get across. Negatives: I do wish there were more recipes as I love most of those that are included and would like more. Also, as far as the exercises in the book (and I mean the kind you write not the kind that make you sweat)it would be nice if there were more of them and more space to write your thoughs. Positives: The book is very motivating, and if you like to cook you will love it. If you don't there is a section that helps you choose foods when you eat out. The last chapter addresses many situations that I needed help with, including eating with my kids and eating on vacation. I have gone back and read that part many times. Highly recommended.
A scientific-conscious dietary guideline

The Foundation Diet is a diet book that emphasizes tips, tricks, and techniques that promote one to lose weight in a manner that puts the body's and brain's natural mechanisms to use for one. Author and psychiatrist Anthony J. Burlay, M.D. draws upon some of the core philosophy behind the Atkins diet to show the reader the importance of how and when to remove carbohydrates from the diet in order to nudge the body into burning its stores of fat for energy. At the same time, carbohydrates cannot be completely eliminated - vegetable carbs and plenty of fiber are particularly important to healthy nutrition and digestion, although The Foundation Diet does guide the reader toward eating meats and proteins much as the Atkins diet does. Above all, a critical key is not to simply skip meals or deprive oneself too much; such an action merely triggers the body to shift into fasting mode and conserve energy, rather than lose weight. A scientific-conscious dietary guideline and a welcome supplement to non-vegetarian diet and weight loss shelves.
'Foundation Diet' Beckons Humans To Get Back To Their Low-Carb Roots

I discovered a book called The Foundation Diet by a psychiatrist named Dr. Anthony J. Burlay the other day and was fascinated by his creative approach to weight management.
Dr. Burlay, who lost 50 pounds on his weight loss plan and has kept it off, said some diet programs fail for certain people because they unnecessarily eliminate certain foods that your body was "designed to eat." Some may say that's what happens on a low-carb diet, but Dr. Burlay is actually referring to the foods that our ancestors long ago had to survive on -- vegetation, fruits, nuts and what could be "captured or found." The other foods that we consume these days were never meant to enter our bodies.
The Foundation Diet explains this in great detail and provides the reader with compelling reasons to get back to the low-carb roots of the early humans.
Interestingly, Dr. Burlay explained that our tastes can and will change over time. In other words, foods that we used to find extremely desirable suddenly become less desirable to us after the "initial discomfort" of denying ourselves the pleasure of indulging in such foods.
"It is as though your taste buds evolve to a new plateau of satisfaction," Dr. Burlay stated. "Those foods that previously had such a grip over your decision making may actually cause an adverse response. You will go by the donut or pizza shop with a new found freedom and not give in to the primitive part of your brain linked to emotions and food aroma."
As a 180+ pound weight loss success, I have found this exact phenomena to be right on the money. I never would have thought it would be true, but you can actually lose your desire for your favorite foods. Think about that food you think you could never live without. Got it? Okay, now just imagine there being a day when you become so repulsed by even the thought of that food that you could never put it to your lips again. THAT HAPPENED TO ME!
I started my low-carb lifestyle and stopped eating one specific food item that I ate gobs and gobs of without any hesitation. This food was, needless to say, my most favorite food in the world prior to the time I started livin' la vida low-carb (you'll have to read my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" book to find out what it is!).
But, it didn't jive with my low-carb eating plan, so it had to go. It was hard for a few months, but then something amazing happened. POOF! My desire disappeared. Into THIN AIR! Gone forever! Hey, how'd that happen?! I don't know, but it did and I am better off because of it. It really is a miracle and Dr. Burlay recognizes that in his book.
"Once you are eating a diet which is evolutionarily correct, you can and should pay attention to your body's signals to eat, says Dr. Burlay. "At that point your body will be telling you what it needs and you will find that your 'needs' and 'wants' are the same thing."
The Foundation Diet is a great book for low-carbers who want to read about little more of the historical precedence that low-carb had on humans long before anybody ever heard of Dr. Robert C. Atkins!
In doing some research on Dr. Burlay's views, I couldn't help but be attracted to an article he wrote called "'Low Fat' is Killing America." Oh, I'm lovin' this guy even more already!
He notes in that article that the USDA-recommended Food Pyramid "has not been effective as demonstrated by the increases in rates of overweight and obese Americans" and that a low-fat diet is not a "natural" thing for the body to endure.
Here's what Dr. Burlay writes about eating too many carbohydrates (you're gonna LOVE it!):
"After eating a meal rich in carbohydrates, your body secretes hormones that cause storage of the extra blood glucose in the liver as a storage material called glycogen. When this reserve gets filled up, the rest starts getting stored as fat. By changing your approach to eating, this process can reverse and cause fat burning."
In other words, by eating less fat you make it more likely for your body to store fat. But when you eat more fat, your body becomes a "fat burning" machine! That's the science behind livin' la vida low-carb and what helped this former 410-pounder go from flabby fat to sensationally skinny in one year.
One criticism of The Foundation Diet, though. That has got to be the UGLIEST book cover in the history of publishing. While I understand the motif that is trying to be presented, the cover design does nothing to attract attention to the reader. And that is such a shame considering the excellent content therein.
Nevertheless, The Foundation Diet is worth picking up.

While I understand the motif that is trying to be presented, the cover design does nothing to attract attention to the reader. And that is such a shame considering the excellent content therein.
Nevertheless, The Foundation Diet is worth picking up.

The release of Deadly Freedom comes at a time when Americans are finally awakening to the national threat we face due to our dependency on oil - foreign or otherwise. I love it when a book can both entertain and educate me regarding important issues of the day. David Spicer's first novel is a must read for anyone interested in solving this solvable energy problem.

In his new book Deadly Freedom, David Spicer makes a compelling case for the U.S. to become an electric economy. With the use of already existing technology, electricity generated through solar energy would heat our homes and fuel our cars. Fossil fuels would be replaced with low cost, environmentally clean renewable energy and we would no longer be at the mercy of OPEC or need a military presence in the Middle East.
Of course making the electric economy a reality will require overcoming very powerful special interests including big oil, politicians and foreign governments. Deadly Freedom is a very enjoyable read as it weaves its' way through a myriad of highly motivated opposing forces to offer a very plausible solution to the major issue of our times. Don't miss reading this book !!!

Our dependency on foreign oil is no longer acceptable. David Spicer has written a novel that addresses this issue as well as a solution to the albatross around our necks. Deadly Freedom is the most relevant and timely novel to be written in the first decade of the 21st century. For an enlightening and engaging page-turner novel, read Deadly Freedom. You won't be disappointed in the meld of fact and fiction that David has so cleverly entwined. Jason "Doc" Davidson will take you through a myriad of sources that are trying to prevent an Electric Economy; among them are the government, oil companies, and foreign governments. Doc presents a convincing argument that the Electric Economy can be a reality within the next decade. After reading Deadly Freedom, you can decide for yourself.

Another opportuity for anyone dealing with grief to come to a safe place and explore their own emotions. This is a well-crafted, thoughtful treasure that allows people of all ages to confront their varied responses to difficult losses. Of particular interest are the activities and suggestions for continued thought included at the end of the book. The images allow one to dream while the text keeps a person grounded in difficult realities - a tricky balance to achieve that is done with grace and skill. Overall, this book is a gentle approach to confronting one's loss, and it allows the reader to begin a spiritual and healing journey in a creative and non-threatening way.

Loosing my father tragically to suicide, feeling my life spiral out of control and seeing my 7 year old son and two teenage daughters deal with this loss, we were searching to make sense, find peace and help. This story allowed us to feel the pain, express our feelings, connect to our faith and begin the pathway to healing. Through Chris's journey we identified feelings and heart issues hidden deeply. Although written for a child, the child inside all of us cried out for healing. We were able to identify hurts, express feelings, experience unconditional love/acceptance and healing. This story is leading us to a renewed exciting faith journey.

This book was written about a close friend of mine, Chris Morrison, who lost his dad to cancer then only a few short months later was diangnosed with cancer on his 16th birthday and lost his battle with cancer January 13,2005 at the age of 16. I think the book is a great way for other people going through a similar situations to realize that they're not alone in the way they are feeling and that it's ok to feel this way. Ben did an excellent job. He used a poetry because Chris was such a big fan of Dr. Suess. You should definitely check this book out. =) There is also a new book in the series called, My Friend Matilda which talks about pet companionship. So look out for that one also. God Bless.

After reading and trying numerous "get fit" plans, I came across Mr. Laabs' book and finally found something that works! The analogy of a fitness program being like a chair is logical and easy to comprehend. Whether you're a newbie or a veteran to exercise, you'll find a plan that works for you within this book. By weaving in humor and lightheartedness, Mr. Laabs also proves that fitness can be fun! Three cheers for The Middle Age Doesn't Suck Guide To Getting Fit & Staying Fit In Your 40s, 50s and Beyond!

Combining humor and sound advice, author Jim Laabs hits a home run with this book. His fitness and eating programs are well-researched, yet not at all hard to follow. Unlike other fitness plans for baby boomers, the author allows for increased training and intensity. The book continues to be a guide as you get stronger! Mr. Laabs also provides helpful pictures and checkpoints as a guide to help with proper form during exercise. This book makes the perfect gift for the baby boomer in your life.
