The Chimney Tree is an engrossing book that I read in just one day. I had to keep reminding myself that it was fiction rather than fact.

The character, Breindel, illustrates the magnificent strength of the human spirit. One just marvels at her will to go on and prays for her survival.

Breindel Rutner, the heroine of "The Chimney Tree," is a beautiful young woman who seems destined for happiness. She is the daughter of Reb Mordche Rutner, the respected head of the Hasidim in the town of Krovnitz, Poland, during the 1930's. Breindel is a member of a warm and loving family and she has everything that she desires. Unfortunately, her life takes a wrong turn early on. Breindel falls in love with a gentile, and when the relationship becomes public, she is hastily married off to a man she does not love. Unfortunately, her new husband suffers from Messianic delusions, and she must flee from him to keep her own sanity. Breindel's problems escalate throughout the book. Besides having to flee from place to place to escape bad relationships, Breindel suffers horribly during WWII. The Nazis bring death and destruction to Polish Jewry. Many members of Breindel's family die, and she must use her ingenuity to keep herself and her child alive from day to day. The author of this novel, Helaine Helmreich, has created a strong and spirited heroine who evoked my sympathy and interest. "The Chimney Tree" is a sad story of a woman whose life turns out to be far less idyllic than she could ever have imagined.

Curling Up with a Good Read

This book is what people mean when they talk about "curling up with a good read". A generational novel that follows a Jewish girl(Breindal) from an innocent affair with a boy who turns out to be far more than he seems, through the horrors of Nazi and Communist terror. Breindal is a great character who combines an emotional response to her fascinating life coupled with a wisdom and insight that keeps you reading chapter after chapter. When you next need a terrific book for the beach on a sunny day or for staying in on a chilly autumn night, there's no better or more addictive read.

What a wonderful read this is. I'd call it a great page-turner--which it is--but that would leave unmentioned it's lovely style. The book offers a spellbinding story elegantly told.

You'll feel you'll know Breindal as she encounters a world that is going through massive changes and her own journey from innocence to a wisdom forged from young love and the threat of extermination.

But, above all, it is the fascinating story that explains why I, and three of my friends, each read this entire book in one sitting. You just can't put it down and are sorry that I has to end.

Just what I needed

I recently lost my best buddy Smook, a little boy Sheltie, unexpectedly. I needed some truth as to his possible after life according to the Bible. Since I read my Bible daily I was at a loss as to where to look in the Bible for the answer to my question(s). Since Mr. Kurz wrote the first book with such heart and was able to quote the Bible in depth on the after life of animals and their importance to God, I thought I would see what "Part II" offered. In this book (Part II)(bare in mind I have not finished the entire book yet...almost...but not yet), he offers some wonderful insight and seems very concerned in the reader's salvation and putting to bed some of the myths floating around out there. I find this and Mr. Kurz' writing style just as touching as the first book and a must read, as the first book, for folks that have lost a dear pet and wants some answers.

I know naysayers "scoff" at this as naive, but Gary provides ample Chapter and verse information confirming my belief that they are special to GOD, they do have souls, and they are in Heaven. Man and only man fell from Grace, not the animals.I had the pleasure to exchange Emails with Gary Kurz @hi AOL address, and welcomed me to dialog with him, if I needed support. His comments were and are still very comforting to me. Indeed, when I leave this earth I will be met by Christ and my Dogs, for the Grand REUNION!AMEN

This book helped me immensely during the loss and grieving of my beloved 11 year old yellow lab, Rascal. The author has a love for animals that I can recognize as genuine being a huge animal lover myself. It was comforting to read the supportive scripture and I am convinced that Rascal and ALL other animals that have ever inhabitied this earth are in heaven.

I have now read both books by Gary Kurz under the "Cold Noses" title. I gave the first book 5 stars because I felt that it was such a valuable book for anyone grieving over the loss of an animal. I feel this book was even better because it was meatier. It had more to say scripturally and Gary's voice was stronger in this book. It was so good that I read it in one sitting. I believe that his scriptural evidence was sound although as a Catholic I dismiss his one quick reference to the rapture. This book should go a long way to dispelling many misconceptions that both believers and non-believers have regarding the topic of animals and eternal life. All I can say is that this is really a good book and I highly recommend it.

The Colors of Grief: Understanding a Child's Journey Through Loss from Birth to Adulthood This book is the best! My husband and I have adopted 3 children. Parenting for everyone is challenging. For parents who have adopted children, there are many factors that go beyond the "normal" parenting responsibilities. Dr. DiCiacco's book is a great source of knowledge for me in trying to understand the "why is my child behaving like that?" What happens during a child's developmental years is so important. For an adopted child, grieving is already a part of their makeup. So to have a readable book full of knowledge that makes sense to my many questions is exciting. Our children have struggled in making good decisions and have difficulty in "connecting dots". I recommend all adoptive parents and professionals working with children to have a copy of this book to read and use as a resource. I guarantee you will be enlightened. DRM - Denver, Colorado

A good text for introductory CJ

My intro CJ class was assigned this textbook and about half of our test came out of assigned readings, so I spent a good deal of time with this book. I found the book to be professionally written yet easy to digest, even for a college freshman. It gets updated every year, but I compared my 1yr old text with the newer version a classmate had and almost nothing had changed besides these little real-world story blurbs that are spread throughout the book, so you could save some money that way.

I found this book, while currently enrolled at a local 2 year college in Criminal Justice,to be very helpful in explaining how the Criminal Justice system works, from early initiaion of law enforcement practices to modern day. There are many fascinating aspects to explore, and learn from within this text. It also helps to have an instructor that is knowledgeable with the text, so the teaching can be understood.

This book is very educational for those who are majoring or minoring in Criminal Justice. The book itself explains how the Criminal Justice works. In addition to this, the book helps you understand the laws. It also allows you to understand each and every law that the government of the United States has set. The author of this book seems to be very detailed and specific about every law and details of these. Another thing that makes this such a great book to any college student who has great interest in learning Criminal Justice is that it has great illustrations to explain the rights and wrongs of the law.

Mine is 44yrs old and 25lbs overweight. I have been trying to get him into a gym since his last "alarming" physical. I read the Cuts Fitness Book first, so I was prepared for all of the excuses I was about to hear. I also read some of the book to him, the 30minute circuit training concept seemed to strike his interest. I left it on the table and walked away. Well, he read the entire book and said "even I can do this" he then agreed to contact the Cuts gym in our area to use the free 15day trial membership coupon in the back of the book, he loves it.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Got it on Sat May 5, 2007. Was done by bedtime of the 6th. Has surprising information about how the human body (especially us 40+ guys) can be re-conditioned in a short span of time and for only 30 minutes each day. I really appreciated how the writer came down to our level. Let's face it guys, we can be like cave-men when it comes to taking care of ourselves. I think it's a book we all need. If you have a CUTS gym nearby, I recommend working out there. It's 30 minutes and out! If you don't have one nearby, do the home workout. And take to heart the nutritional info. Good Stuff! Thanks Mr. Genarro!

I enjoyed the book. It was an easy quick read. It has plenty of pictures, testimonials and good common sense tips and information. In the book you will learn about foods you should eat and foods you should "Cut Out" as well as exercises for the road and home. Best of all, you can follow the "Body Cuts Program" on a shoe string budget. You will get your body into shape, build your muscles and strengthen your heart and lungs. I plan on following the program. I have already started and you should too.

Just a wonderful book, on many levels

Review Date: 2004-05-09
How difficult it is to write honestly about one's own family, yet on this level--and several others--Sheila Weller triumphs. Her neurosurgeon father, her show-biz-journalist mother, and her uncle Herman, owner of a once-famous nightclub all had careers that had a profound influence on Sheila and her sister Liz.

The author's careful, meticulous documentation of those three livelihoods, plus a "you are there" look at her childhood in Beverly Hills (a decade before my childhood fifteen miles away) paint a many-faceted portrait of her family and the times, with joy and pain and glamour. The untimely deaths, the splits in the family bonds, all are described unflinchingly. Weller even gives a less-than-flattering description of her own girlhood, and how hard she tried to please a reserved father who reluctantly gave her a pet name, Brooksie. She was delighted until he added, "Because you babble."

An admirable effort from Sheila Weller. And bless her and her sister, for coming out whole!

this book was so interesting because it took you back in time to a whole different era, very glamorous, even if superficial. her gossip on the stars was really nothing compared to the drama her family played out. she's a strong person and rather than feeling disgusted and sorry for her you really cheer her on for her good sense and survival instinct.

When I ordered this book I thought I was buying an exposé about life at Ciro's in it's heyday, with emphasis on celebrities. Light summer reading, you know.. But this book is not about that and I could not have been more surprised or pleased. Sheila Weller's experiences as an adolescent trying to fit in with the Popular Girls rings so true that I felt like I was in Junior High again, only with her. The painful stories she relates about her family, especially about her father, made me think she must be a wonderfully strong woman to be able to write with such honesty. And with a wry sense of humor threaded throughout, even in the painful parts of her story. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more from this author.

Sheila Weller has told the story of her family lovingly and without self-pity. Although she describes many supremely painful moments - her rejection by her father is foremost - I never had the feeling she was wallowing in the past. She did her homework and the history of her parents and grandparents was more interesting than descriptions of the celebrities who visited Ciro's. We hear enough about celebrities these days. Weller maintains good tension throughout the book. Once I began reading I didn't want to put it down.

Every time I read another one of Dr. Barbara Roses' books, I truly feel the same response; beautiful, brilliant, healing, loving, and simplistic; "Dear God, How Do I Get Over a Former Lover I Still Love" is just that!!
"Gratitude is motivated by love, pain is motivated by fear". There are many more profound statements as this one written between the pages of this incredibly informative book. IN ADDITION, still loving a former lover, does not have to apply to you, in order to receive this brilliant, nurturing loving advice. The advice that lies between these pages will touch your very soul, and also teach you all there is to know, to love yourself first and foremost and release all fears as well as getting past the pains of what you may perceive as loosing a lover you once had in you life. These are some powerful words of wise, loving knowledge, which is why I truly love this book!

The book was well written and the solutions were very clear and appropriate.

The format of this book is "just right" for grievers. Short sections allow the reader to read as little or as much as they can handle at one sitting. This is an excellent gift for the seasons of Fall and Winter when society inundates us with holiday celebrations and togetherness. Since September 11, 2001, this book ought to become a best-seller. I've given out at least a dozen copies to family and friends.

This book is one of the best on the market for grieving. It covers how to handle the process, gives tips on how to handle Holiday celebrations, birthdays, when people say stupid things.

It is written in 3-4 page chapters---easy to read and very effective. I have given this for about 5 years to people ---especially in the case of a sudden death, and or the death of a young person.

Think it is one of the best available.

This is a good book to read for following your first detox. But I did find that my body needed some protein on the second day. So I added beans to the evening meal of miso the second night and it worked like a charm. This book contains some New Age mumbo-jumbo, but if you follow the dietary plans, you will see some amazing benefits. As the book recommends, I highly recommend you stick with a strict vegi diet the week before your detox to get the most benefits. I started on a Tuesday. By the following Tuesday I had lost 9 pounds and felt so great I hated going off the detox plan. Once you try a couple of different plans in this book, you figure out what works best for you. I invested in a Green Power juicer ..., the kind that juices wheatgrass, and I'm using it like crazy. You can also pick up a book of juicing recipes that will help you find ways to make the juices more delicious. Enjoy!

Diet by Design will change your life!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-04
Do not misinterpret the contents of this book when you read the title "Diet by Design;" because Diet by Design is not just another "diet book;" but rather, a one-of-a-kind, comprehensive health resource that teaches you about diet and nutrition, food and water safety, food combining, healthy eating tips; lifestyle factors, how to shop for, store, and prepare produce, and much, much more! Most other "diet books" present diets that do not work because you cannot wait to get off the diet and eat and eat and eat and eat [with the result of gaining the weight back and more]; however, Diet by Design is not like this because the pleasure of eating surpasses any junk food and fast food available and you can eat till you are satisfied and still lose weight, maintain your weight, or even gain weight if you need to.

Diet by Design has three main parts. Part 1 covers an enormous amount of subject matter. Part 2 is an extensive fruit guide [with nuts and seeds too] that provides you with buying, storing, and preparation tips that you would never have even considered. The guide is fully illustrated and has helped me to buy the best-tasting produce and has saved me a lot of money. Part 3 is a fantastic recipe guide that teaches you how to easily and quickly make all kinds of wonderful treats that are free from refined sugars, oils and fats [unless you use nuts or seeds], salt, and other harmful substances. The recipes are raw food recipes [although a few options are provided for those who want to eat bread and granola]. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will be delighted and the recipes belong in every kitchen! I like the fact that there are recipes which take the place of store-bought ice creams, chocolate, and other candy and junk foods. There are all-natural recipes for smoothies, ice creams, fudge, toppings, sauces, salad dressings, guacamoles, soups, and more.

At the conclusion of the book are Scriptures relating to health and I found these extremely interesting even though I do not profess to be a Christian. The author also makes a statement in the book about Jesus and this did not bother me in the least, especially after seeing the Mel Gibson movie about Christ.

I cannot argue with anything presented in the book; and, I am a little embarrassed to say that I actually learned thousands of things that I never knew!

One final note: the author promotes protection of animals and the environment. The facts and positions that he presents have made me more conscious of animal husbandry and the need to preserve the environment.

Outstanding - no other book in the world like it!

These fabulous recipes belong in every kitchen [whether you are a vegetarian or non-vegetarian]. I like the fact that there are recipes that take the place of store-bought ice creams, chocolate, and other candy and junk foods. There are all-natural recipes for smoothies, ice creams, fudge, toppings, sauces, salad dressings, guacamoles, soups, and more.

At the conclusion of the book are Scriptures relating to health and I found these extremely interesting even though I do not profess to be a Christian.

Outstanding!

Diet by Design has it all: Diet, Nutrition, Lifestyle, Health, Shopping, and Recipes! An enormous amount of wonderful, important, and edifying information is presented which is easy to put into practice. In Part 1, some of my favorite sections are Healthy Eating Tips, Avoiding Chemicals and Genetically Modified foods, Food Combining, and the information regarding animal foods and factory farming. Part 2 of Diet by Design is an essential resource which teaches you all that you need to know about fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetable-fruits! It is illustrated and each item is thoroughly described - even exotics that you may across while traveling to other countries. Also, in Part 2, nutrients within each food are provided and there are hundreds of buying, storing, and serving suggestions which you have never even considered! Additionally, warnings about what to avoid are given. By following the advice you are not only able to obtain the highest quality produce; but, you also save much money and prevent waste - and this makes you feel efficient and productive. The tips and suggestions outlined in Part 2 have paid for my book hundreds of times over within a few years.

Part 3, The Recipe Guide, shows you how to make delicious, healthful alternatives for many otherwise un-healthful treats such as shakes, candy, puddings, ice cream, dressings, etc, etc.
No refined sugar, "free-fats", animal foods, preservatives, or additives. Great for children, teens, and adults!

Diet by Design is truly unique and there is not another book quite like it. This book is for people of every age and has plenty to offer to new health seekers and also health experts.

An excellent book!!! Finally I can shop for fresh produce with confidence. Using tips from this book I now have the knowledge to determine if produce is fresh, ripe, and safe to eat. I am no longer having to dispose of fruits and vegetables as I am able to shop wisely and store them properly. We have saved alot of money as result. I am also very pleased to see healthy, natural recipes for treats that my kids love. I would recommend this book highly!
