My 3 year old is crazy about firefighters and this is one of our favorite books! Very creative, and although a little long it holds his attention until the end (then he always laughs and gives me a hug). Very good book!

We ordered this for our son who was graduating from the fire fighting academy - Cute paperback book. Only issue at all was with the delivery. It was left outside of the house and in the rain -- could have ruin the book but fortunately it was only damp by the time we got it.
Very interesting book to read

I'LL GIVE THIS BOOK TO A KINDERGARTEN BOY, BUT I THINK HE WILL LIKE IT FOR A LONG TIME. THE VOCABULARY WILL BE A CHALLENGE, BUT HE WILL GROW INTO IT. I KNOW HE WILL LOVE RO HAVE HIS MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER READ THIS TO HIM FOR YEARS TO COME. FIREFIGHTERS ARE NOT THE ONLY OCCUPATION INCLUDED. THE JOBS RUN THE GAMUT. THE COLORFUL ILLUSTRATIONS BEAUTIFULLY PORTRAY IMAGINITIVE PLAY AT WORK. 'LITTLE SISTER' IS INVOLVED IN EACH WORK EPISODE, TOO. IT IS A LOT OF FUN TO SEE EVERY DAY OBJECTS USED IN SUCH CREATIVE WAYS!!

I really enjoyed reading A Season of Hope. I could not put the book down. Lauren Brooke is the very best author for horse books. If you like horses YOU MUST READ THEESE BOOKS or you will miss out on something so wonderful that there is no word to describe it. I really wish that there were more than twenty books in the series. A Season of Hope is about a girl named Amy and how she is faced with the horrors of animal cruelty to horses, although she could be dealing with the law Amy tries everything she can to help the horses. Amy is greatly helped by her sister Lou, her boyfriend Ty who is also a stable hand, Amy and Lou's grandpa, Lou's fiancé also the vet Scott, Joni a stable hand, and somehow Ty's father who hated horses but changed his mind after he spent time with them and then he finally understood that Ty belonged to work at Heartland. The phrase healing horses healing hearts means that in every book horses are healed and a person or people learn valuable life lessons. I love the Heartland books so much that for every book in the series I would give them all five stars, even more than that if I could. The Heartland books make me feel that I am inside the book watching it all. It seems as if I am watching television but different. My favorite part in the book would definitely be the ending but... you won't find out the ending unless you read it!

This book is one of the best heartland books and i should know. I've read them all. As a surprising twist that takes place the whole book(if you didnt read the back)Ty's dad brings a truckload of horses that were to be sold in an auction house. All the horses were in very bad condition. Three of which died. You'll have to read the book to find out the rest. And you should. This is a really great book!

This book tells a lot about society. It is about horses that either have problems or are being abused. What does that say about people in general? It tells us some people can be cruel. Society does not help horses that have been hurt or abandoned. People should not be allowed to have pets if they dont take care of them. That is where society comes in. People should prove that they are mature or responsible to take care of a pet before they purchase it. People should be able to have pets, as long as they take care of them properly and treat them kindly.
The characters in this story are very similar to the people I know. The main character and I both like animals, expecialy horses. Amy is the main character. She helps abused horses with their problems and fears. She and I both believe that no animal should be tormented. Other characters like Ty and Nacy are like my mom and dad. Ty is like my dad becuase Ty helps around the stables and my dad is like that too. Nancy is like my mom she is kind and supports peoples ideas. My mom is very nice and she will support almost everyone's opinion. So all the characters do resemble friends and family even though they are different people.
There are a couple different themes in this book. One is that you should always treat your pets with respect, no matter how mean they are. Two, is to always support your friends. If they have an idea you should be bringing them up, not pushing them down. Last, but not least is to always help others. This is a very important one because people who need your help may need a friend as well. If you are able to help them out, you should also be able to be their friend and help them later on if they need it. So always help and be a friend to everyone!!

Heartland Series #16
I ride horses and i love them i also have horses and abunch of heartland books that i love. This series is about a stable called Heartland and horses that come here are usually afraid of something or they have been abused, so they cure them by using herbal remedies and patience. Amy, who is the main character, does the healing and is also heeling her grief of her mother who died in a car crash when saving an abandoned horse on a stormy night.
In book 16 of the series, Ben, one of the stable hands is leaving so he can concentrate on showing his horse Red more. So Heartland finds a new stable hand named Joni who already knows a lot of the herbal remedies they use and how to use them. Also in this Heartland book right now they are curing a police horse named Venture who was injured in a tornado by falling tires while his rider Sergeant Garcia was trying to rescue kids in a trapped car. Venture is all healed, but starts rearing and bucking at the sight of the saddle, saddle pad, and bridle so any thing to do with tack. Amy gets concerned when he makes no progress at all. So if you want to find out what happens to Venture and all the rest at Heartland you will have to read the book. There are a total of 20 numbered books and a special edition book in the Heartland series.

My daughter (2 1/2) loves this book. She has me read it to her every night before bed along with 2 other books. This book has remained constant along with Charlie and Lola's I am not sleepy and I will not go to bed. There is always something you missed the first or fifteenth time around when reading this book to your little one. Very well written and a lot of fun. Also just came across the Charlie and Lola website. www.charlieandlola.com (excellent)

I just cant say how much I love Charlie & Lola...I think this is my fourth purchase of this very same book! I can't stop giving them to all the little ones in our lives. My daughter adores the characters. She isnt quite two but has been reading C&L with me for about 6 months. We also love the videos. Very sweet.
This particular book was fun to read as we got our daughter ready for her first daycare experience.
My goal is to have every Charlie & Lola book and DVD made. I love the innocence and imagination I see with every turn of the page.

This is the most amazing, heartfelt piece of literature I have ever read in my fourteen years. I have read and re-read thousands of books, but never has one left me as speechless nor as breathless as Johnny Voodoo. I reccomend this novel to anyone who is in dire need of a good cry, or just wants to read something out of the ordinary, and something so incredibly written that it stops your heart, if only for a second with the many words forming such an experiance, such an indescribable tale. It is one of the best, if not the best novel you will ever let your eyes wander on.

'Johnny Voodoo' might be the best book i've ever read. The author does a good job of.. 1. drawing you in to the book, so you fee like you're actually right along there with Dedrie 2. Incorperates romance w/o makng it mushy 3. There's both depression and hapiness. it's an awesome book that I think everyone should read.

Johnny VooDoo was by far one of the best books I have read. Not many books will get me reading to the point where I don't want to stop until it's finished. Dierdre is an outcast in her town. She just moved there and she has no friends. She feels all alone between her home and school worlds and her mother had died years before. Then she meets Johnny and everyhting changes for Dierdre and she learns a valuable lesson. True love always lasts. But is the love between her and Johnny true love or is it just a game. Will their love last?

American medical system needs more emphasis on quality of life for patients, less on money for doctors

This book is excellent for elderly persons and for those with serious illnesses. Kiernan's main point is that death in America is increasingly gradual rather than sudden, and is typically preceded by a long period of illness. Yet most doctors have almost no training at all in the care of terminal patients. The result is that patients frequently suffer unnecessarily. Be warned that some of the stories Kiernan tells of patients' last days in ICUs are nothing short of horrifying. I was stunned to find out that it is common practice for patients who are clearly already dead to have their clothes cut open and their hearts defibrillated and injected with adrenaline.
The American medical system is presently in a state of ever-diminishing returns. Costs keep rising, but health is not substantially improved; in fact, in many cases health is worsened by the aggressive medical interventions so common today. My husband and I spend a substantial chunk of our incomes on insurance for ourselves and our son. Are we getting our money's worth? I don't think so. Kiernan's book makes clear that a large part of the reason is that doctors are too cowardly to face a patient and admit that there isn't much more they can do. The fact is, though, that everyone dies sooner or later. I certainly hope that when my own time comes, I will die pain-free in peaceful surroundings, with music playing and someone there to hold my hand.
As a lawyer myself, I felt that Kiernan had too little to say on the contribution of lawyers to the problem of terminal illness and quality of care at the end of life. I think that one important change that needs to be made is a simple state or federal law that forbids suing a doctor for malpractice if he chooses not to implement certain treatments. I would propose that this list include: all forms of open-heart surgery, including cardiac bypass; heart defibrillation after cardiac arrest; CT and MRI scans; chemotherapy for persons who are over age 70 or who have other serious illnesses; and ICU treatment for persons over age 70 or who are terminally ill. Doctors would still be free to order these treatments if they felt that they were clinically necessary or desirable, but they would no longer have to live in fear of being sued if they don't take every step imaginable.
If you are considering surgery or other high-tech medical treatment, I would suggest pairing this book with The Last Well Person: How to Stay Well Despite the Health-Care System.

This book was just what was needed to reassure our family that our decision for Hospice care was the right course for our elderly parent's end of life. It contained so many good suggestions that we were able to act upon. It helped us all cope with our loss, both before and after the actual death.
I recommend this book HIGHLY if you are facing a similar situation. The constant focus is on Quality of life and comfort during one's last days, just what my father wanted! Very reassuring!

This is a "Must Read" for everyone! As an R.N with 32 years experience (12 yrs critical care & 7 yrs In-Patient Hospice) it is my privilege to endorse this book. Mr. Kiernan has clearly and accurately documented what is a reality that will ultimately affect every single one of us. In both scope and depth Mr. Kiernan has spoken the truth. He has not embellished, exaggerated or dramatized any detail of his book. Every human being deserves to die in peace (spiritual and emotional) and free from pain. This is a goal which is attainable but I can assure you that your chances of experiencing this are not good in any of today's modern acute care hospitals or nursing homes. (There are always exceptions). Hospice care is the only option and that is primarily because hospice is not a place but a philosophy of care. All physicians can manage the care of an acutely ill person but only a few physicians are qualified to manage your care if you are dying because the vast majority of physicians do not recognize or they refuse to accept that there is a difference. Please read this book. It could be one of the most important things you ever do both for yourself and for those whom you love.

Written about nurses by nurses themselves, this book speaks to all of us. In a format blending story telling we know as nurses with the plain, sometimes harsh truth about barriers, 11 nurses described how they worked their way into the nursing profession, or fought to remain after health issues threatened their career. "Leave No Nurse Behind" is a positive outlook on the strength of determination and "Abilities" of nurses representing our profession proudly. Each chapter's 'Workable Wisdom' highlight practical tips flowing from the reading. And lucky Chapter 13 is excellent "Future Planning" encouraging us to look at our own vulnerability (Yes we are all "TABs": Temporarily Able Bodied..never know when we may be the one to be left behind). Time to begin exploring, highlighting, and applying the lessons learned and guidelines to develop similar resources and links in Canada! P.S. I've purchased a copy to donate to my alma mater.

I am an RN with a significant hearing loss and am unable to lift over 20 lbs for the rest of my life. The hospital I worked for for the past 13 years told me they could not accommodate me and I had to go. I felt like a failure as a nurse! I looked at other options, but after being a nurse for 23 years I could not think of anything I would rather be. I went back to school to obtain my BSN, and after reading Donna MaHeady's book Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working With Disabilities, I found new hope and a stronger determination. The life stories in this book are nothing but inspiring and motivating. IT is a well written book and I am so very glad that I have purchased it for my own. The nurses in this book are nothing but phenomenal!! Donna has provided hope and inspiration for all disabled nurses by her wonderful book.

In the world of nursing, we tend to think of YAVIS (young, attractive, verbal, intelligent and successful). That means persons with disabilities are often shut out due to appearances. Dr. Maheady suggests that we are hurting ourselves in the nursing world by discarding what does not appear to be perfect, instead of encorporating what people with disabilities can bring to the bedside.
This is also true for the rest of society. There is a place for everyone, and just as we do not discriminate based on race and religion, we should not discriminate based on disability.

I had the wonderful opportunity to read & review "Leave No Nurse Behind" and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. This book explores the personal life stories of 11 corageous nurses as each "fought" their way to satisfy their life dream of becoming a nurse. Each of the 11 never allowed other people's ideas/beliefs prevent them from achieving their ultimate goal. Each nurse found their own niche in nursing and found a way to significantly contribute to the profession & ultimately to society. I strongly recommend that this book be required reading to all student nurses. In reading the stories of nurses with disabilities other future nurses may begin to understand the challenges experienced by persons with physical & emotional disabilities. In addition to the stories shared, each nurse offers workable words of wisdom to help deal with challenges & inspire sucess.

I was inspired by the nurses in this book who described their struggles to realize their dreams despite their challenges. I especially liked the "workable" sections at the end of each chapter. They took the lessons learned and applied them in a general way for others to adapt to their own situations.

This book is a great reference text for anyone who treats low back injuries and works to create lumbar core stabilization. Following the work of Janda and others, McGill has taken core stabilization to the next level. His research based approach is 100% applicable and easy to follow. He presents the science of how the body works and this is great. McGill, also being a Ph.D., does not have a medical, chiropractic, or other bias...he presents things as he finds them through studies. This is a great book and well worth every penny...
For those in the fitness field, I recommend the Ultimate Back Fitness book...very applicable and easier to follow...

Some other reviewers have (directly or indirectly) made it clear that this book is primarily for researchers, doctors, and other health-care professionals, but I would like to re-state this as clearly and emphatically as possible, as some buyers may be seriously misled by claims (not made by the author!) that it is "a book that can be read by almost everyone" or one that "every patient suffering from low back pain should read". Only Part 3 (about specific exercises to do and not do) fits that description. Parts 1 and 2 are highly technical and addressed almost entirely to physicians and academic researchers. For someone without a good working knowledge of anatomy (that's me, in case you think I'm being condescending to the ignorant masses), these parts of the book are impossible to follow. My advice to the sufferer from low-back pain (again, that's me) would be to get the book from a library and concentrate entirely on part 3.

This book not only tells you what to do to heal your back, it tells you why with exceptionally thorough evidence using test results, photos, measurements, and statistics. It's pretty intense for the lay reader. Hopefully Dr. McGill will come out with a book for the lay reader and dispel a lot of myths about back health and unhealthy ab exercises that are advertised every day on TV.

Clinicians who wish to competently evaluate, manage, and rehabilitate low back disorders will find this book indispensable due to its unique content. While other texts cover topics related to examination, differential diagnosis, or specific therapeutics, this text focuses on a thorough, component-by-component research-based review of each part of the human lumbopelvic region for the purpose of providing a comprehensive understanding of how the low back truly functions, how to credibly evaluate its function, and how to properly restore as much normal function as possible. Sufficiently detailed for scholars, yet understandable by virtually anyone, Dr. McGill uses a practical, evidence-based dialogue with the reader to address issues which I have rarely seen adequately addressed by anyone. Just what is the true function of the iliopsoas muscle in relation to the low back? And is there really such a thing as an iliopsoas muscle? And how would one properly rehabilitate a weakened rectus abdomonis muscle, without potentially aggravating a low back disorder? And why is this necessary? And is it possible that many of the exercises currently prescribed for chronic low back pain are actually detrimental to the spine, and why? These are but a few of the many important and practical topics that are covered within this book. Frankly, I don't believe anyone can competently care for low back conditions of any kind without this valuable information. I consider this book a valued and essential part of my professional library.

This book is fantastic. I wish I could thank Dr. McGill personally for this well-researched, well-founded book on rehabilitating the lower back. This book should be required reading for low back pain patients and their care givers. After reading the book, I was able to relieve a tremendous amount of back pain through very careful application of the ideas. It also helped me understand why my symptoms seemed to be aggravated by physical therapy. If you suffer from lower back pain, this is a great way to take better control of your therapy. The "evidence-based" nature of the book makes it invaluable.

The book I read was Mammoth Magic. I liked several things about this book. One thing I liked about the book is it's illustrations. The reason I said this is because the illustrations really bring things out. Another thing I liked is the words. She really uses variety. My favorite part is when Toby faced up to being scared of the dark.
The reason I gave Shelley Gill 5 stars is because she makes her books so interesting and she makes you want to read more of her books. From reading that one book she makes me want to read many others.

I like this book and illustrations, because it is very interesting about the mammoths. It was cool how tall and big mammoths are. They had very shaggy hair. Andy was scared of the dark until his grandpa Tobuck took him to check traps and had to spend the night out in the dark. Andy was afriad to sleep in the dark. So when he was sleeping he remembered about the story Tobuck told him. When he fell asleep he dreamed about trees chasing him and bumped into a mammoth. Then his grandpa woke up, and conquered being afraid of the dark.

I like this book because it is exciting and tells you about amazing things that happened in the past.I also love the illustrations. It is about a little boy named Andy. He is scared of the dark. His grandfather, Tobuk, invited him to go camping out at night and the next day.Tobuk told Andy about mammoths. So, Tobuk and Andy took their sleeping bags, and Andy was scared. He had a dream about a mammoth. I love this book.

(ASIN:"The Mask of Sanity, 5th edition, Hard Cover")
This 5th edition is an absolute masterpiece of a pychiatrist's life work that began when he first encountered the psychopath in a closed institutional hospital setting, which could not even begin to do anything for him. Attempting to understand, to have empathy for, and to treat this kind of person became Dr. Cleckley's lifetime work. His incredible insight into the psychopath is detailed with longitudinal case examples that are poetically descriptive. If Dr. Cleckley were alive today, he would be so proud to be reading the current scientific literature that substantiates his initial hunch that the psychopath has a biological impairment of emotional learning that cannot be fixed by any means yet available to humankind. The history and science of the psychopath begin with Dr. Hervey Cleckley's final edition.

I liked topic 60 in an edition I found in the library, about people who are failures because they do not stick to one career path. I was reading it at about the time when I was in a large room full of people getting the preliminary instructions on how to be successful day traders in stocks and options, because the market is always going to go up, the market is going to go down, or the market is going to go sideways. With a net worth of $75,000, a set of rules, and twenty minutes a day when the market is open to apply all the rules, many people have become millionaires, but one of the rules is {don't get greedy} because people who get greedy are likely to break some of the rules and get too many eggs in one basket. No matter what you are interested in, THE MASK OF SANITY provides enough material for you to come to the conclusion that modern society caters to psychopathic personalities, but in ways that will keep most of us from becoming the millionaires who just follow rules.

An early study on what is now known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). When the original book was written in 1938, the etiology of FAS was not known. And drinking/drug use(in private) by upper class women was considered to be "unladylike" and therefore "not done" and not recognized. Other books, written in 1998 by Dr. Ann Streissguth, more clearly explain the symptomology of FAS. Dr. Robert Ackerman's "Perfect Daughters: Grown Children of Alcoholics" more clearly explains patterns of female drinking which tends to be more privately done than male drinking.

I really recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject. His case histories are a book in themselves and capture the soul of a psychopath so well. A very thorough book that examines every aspect of the condition, I am impressed by his attempt to even explore historical and literary references. Ahead of it's time because his conclusions cannot be shaken even now. A much better book than Hare's "Without Conscience". Hare even lifts phrases directly out of the book eg."trivial, impersonal affairs".
Astonishingly accurate portrayal of psychopaths without sensationalizing the subject. I like how he gives different types of psychopaths; these are men and women in the street, 'ordinary' individuals but so disturbed (hence the very apt title).
His analysis is spot-on: he really knows his subject. More thorough than Hare's. He doesn't fudge any details. Really all you need to know about the topic. Still the best book about psychopaths.

I heard of this book through the Cassiopeia web-project, a website dedicated to psychopathy. They've scanned Cleckly's book, and offer it as a PDF. Just google for Cassiopeia and Cleckly.
I read a large part of the book, and as a (Dutch, please pardon my spelling in places) psychologist I am in awe of this book. Much has been said in the other reviews.
Cleckley doesn't choose the easy way; he painstakingly and consciently tries to distinguish between sociopathy (as psychopathy is currently called) and a number of other human and mental conditions. Such as schizophrenia, narcissm, ordinary human variation, your runn-of-the-mill neuroticism. And, very importantly, and perhaps the hardest distiction to make, Checly puts in perspective how sociopathy can be distinguished from rebelling against the moral standards of a particular era. The book was first written in 1948, and sexuel promiscuïty meant something different then then it does now. Such distinctions are where a dated book most clearly shows it flaws, and Checkly comes out as timeless and fresh as when it first came out.
His book is a very well written (his style reminded me of Oliver Sacks in places) essay into the meaning of a certain, everyday kind of human evil. The book answers the frustrated question of everyone who has dealt with a such a psychopath: "How could he DO that?" Cleckley estimates that 5 % of the population will have some psychopathic tendencies, although many of those psychopaths lead succesful lives with careers and marriages. So the odds are, you will meet one. If you want to understand him or her, and have enough background knowledge to tackle this book, read it.

But we don't read it very often, and I think I know why.
Firstly, this is a *very* long, *very* wordy book. It's definitely better suited for children closer to 8 than to 4, and even then - it's a long book. You have to really make time for it, you can't just fit it in there. This isn't in and of itself a problem, plenty of the books we *do* read a lot are long, but it definitely doesn't make me more likely to want to read it.
Secondly, the mom in the book is... well... just a little needy. By the middle of the book her desperation for a hug starts to weird me out. I understand that kids go through that no-hugging stage, and you do start to really miss them - but I can't help thinking that she'd get more cuddles if she'd just SHUT UP about it already! I know if I want a hug, all I have to do is ostensibly refuse them and the next thing I know I'm being smothered! (And I'm not that needy for them, either.)
It's just not my thing. I know a lot of people sympathize with the mom, and I feel for her, but... it goes a little overboard, and not in the funny way that I like.
It might just be me.
